There is really no other

There is really no other place than a wife day thread to post a wife day comment. Doesn't exactly fit under basketball recruiting...

You do you, mate.

Are we still really doing "Wifeday"?

Can we not call it wifeday? It implies that we only prioritise our spouse when M isn't playing (not true for many of us of course) and plays into the casual sexism that has been discussed on and off. I get that it's a joke... It just isn't a good one. It's kinda lame. Like, funny in 1982, I get it, low hanging fruit and all, henpecked husband cliche/incompatible couple hilarity, but it's overplayed. A boring joke that ignores the female fans.

Neg away, I know it's not a popular view.

Maybe just murder

From what I've seen of college sports, I'm not sure being a rapist is an issue for a lot of places.

Weather on 18 July at Purdue

It was a high of 84 degrees on July 18 in Lafayette, IN... slightly cooler than game day and that time they didn't have over 70 large men in pads crowding the place. A walkthrough wouldn't have called attention to the glaring problem.

Take some responsibility for your terrible accommodations rather than leaving it up to the visitors to ask. Have some self respect.

Hey are you connected with

Hey are you connected with the UM Alumni Club for Australia and New Zealand? Folks may have some advice on the fb page (https://m.facebook.com/groups/2345572612?ref=bookmarks) and the email to contact to get on the update list for events and news is [email protected]. One of the main organisers is in Queenstown, I'm in Brisbane.

Not a bad idea

I could actually do that during these threads. Every time I see this thread it's already Sunday morning here in Australia. It might give people perspective to hear from someone with a hangover while they're drinking. Then again this would require me to intentionally get a hangover so... probably not.

Time zones are fun.

I know right?! /s

I mean who would admit they're from Sydney?!

Melbourne, I could see that- very artsy and Ann Arbor-y in parts. Brisbane, that I would respect (I'm Brisbane-based). Adelaide, I love their wine. Perth, wonderfully underrated. Hobart... good alcohol of all kinds so that's worth advertising. Darwin, just for having survived it would be worth bragging about.

[But seriously I imagine he really is from Sydney. Sydneysiders never pass up an opportunity to say where they're from... but it's a lovely city.]

Source?

Are the player postgame comments up? Not questioning it I'd just like to read them.

THIS

I'll be honest I was pretty disappointed at first, but it's not reasonable to expect this- or any- team to perform at their highest level every quarter. As you point out, peer teams have their lulls... and they lost. We are fortunate to have the complaints we do. If they have a terrible game against Maryland but squeak it out then I'll be truly concerned.

Just Like My Opinion, Man.

So it's not good to respect the ownership others? I would imagine that's exactly what someone should do if we don't own the property.

Yes but if one of us were to do a UFR it would almost invariably come out differently due to the subjective nature of Brian's analysis, rendering it far less useful than anything he would come up with. A weakness of the system for sure, but it's the one we've got.

Yes, this site doesn't exist without the viewers, posters, and contributors. However, I fail to see how that is relevant in this case. I was just saying not to put the cart before the horse and that the idea of doing pre-emptive UFRs and previews from the peanut gallery was less than useful... for me, as a viewer, poster, and MGoBoard contributor. :)

By the way, why do you have to be so rude about it?

I've got a few notes

1) This is Brian's site, not ours. He'll preview as he sees fit. I am pretty sure there's a plan in place to prepare previews ahead of time as the case may be. They've got a month between the Big Ten Championship and the playoff, if it even comes to that.

2) I do not trust any of us to UFR accurately relative to his system, I'd rather let the expert take care of that.

3) While I hate to be the myopic "don't look ahead", don't look that far ahead. OSU wasn't supposed to lose to PSU either. Let's enjoy the ride, guys.

Millennial Bashing? Really?

At least that stupid millennial spelled each word in his post correctly. I'll now get off your lawn.

Sincerely,

A better educated generation than yours

That commercial...

I never skip commercials on podcasts... except that one. For one, I can't stand small children, but that's on me. More importantly, it is all so painfully awkward. I love the work Matt does but it's nails on chalkboard to hear that. Yes, please re-record something a bit more professional. That feels so cruel to type but it's coming from a good place.

So...

it makes the protesters feel accomplished but ultimately accomplishes nothing except trying to shame the athletes about their university? Coming from another fanbase it again will not achieve its intended result. Call me crazy but I care about whether the message communicates to the receiver what it's intended to.

Double post

Click once, post twice, as I always say.

He's dead

And the only people this will send a message to are some innocent students. This will do nothing about the university's administration, only be interpreted as disrespect for the athletes.

This is coming from a good place and I understand the message it wants to send, but it won't hit home the way it's intended.

MGoVideo

MGoVideo posts it usually a day after the game, commercials removed. It's kind of amazing.

Hello

Just wait for the Hello post or not, no sense in the rest mate.

Seems light-hearted

No problem with that. Some light-hearted ribbing, harkening back to a big win that they had over Michigan. He's gotta play to his base. Besides, he was the clear #2 if Harbaugh didn't come to U-M, so I have no bitterness towards him. He could be a lot worse, and there he is actually spending time with and working with Coach Harbaugh. Good on him for supporting his team and fans with some fun.

A fantastic first step

Even if it could only be used for cargo, that's a tremendous relief. Right now passenger trains share the rails with freight, which is the primary obstacle to high-speed rail- brand new lines would have to be laid, not just upgrading current lines. If freight were to be replaced along certain lines then the passenger trains could become proper high-speed rail.

I hope the engineering challenges are overcome, they may be numerous but great things always have huge scientific obstacles.

You may be thinking of Rugby League

I don't see AFL guys as being potential linemen or big TE or LB types- that's more the rugby folks popular in NSW or QLD. Aussie Rules is more wide open, faster, and not quite as crunching tackles (but man they fly up to get a mark). I think the range of athlete in Australian sport makes it a great potential recruiting ground. You nailed the appeal for them, provided they don't think they have a good path to the pro game in AFL or NRL, where they could be in the top level by 19.

What a waste

How many kids could we send to college on that? That could set up an endowment fund that paid out $3M per year for eternity (more if the corpus is invested well)... lives could be changed, the whole school's academics could be put on solid footing with amazing opportunities for students. I love football but this is just depressing.

It's AFL and Rugby

The skill sets are very translatable in different ways... AFL is fast and involves a lot of catching on the run, punting (a sort of drop kick motion on the run is the way to move the ball quickly down field to your teammate), high pointing the ball, tackling, etc. Rugby is slower but with bigger hits. I wouldn't be surprised to see athletes aside from punters make the transition.

Not just rugby

They're going to Melbourne, which is more AFL country than rugby. Those guys could translate well as wide receivers, defensive backs, or even returners/scatbacks depending on the frame. AFL is a much more wide open, faster game and is far more popular in Victoria than rugby.

AFL Transferrable to "Gridiron"

A lot of folks in the states are unfamiliar with AFL, Australian Football League, which is very different from rugby. In the few years since I moved here I have absolutely fallen in love with the sport (specifically the Adelaide Crows), which is exciting, high scoring, fast-paced, and with some rather crunching hits.

He's wise to go to Victoria (the state where Melbourne is), which is the hotbed of AFL (Sydney and Brisbane are big rugby centres, whereas Melbourne and Adelaide are mostly AFL). When you hear about an Aussie punter they are usually AFLers (which is why Blake O'Neill came from Melbourne.

However, they are more than that. The way these guys need to streak down the field and high-point a ball, I wouldn't be surprised for them to make a good transition to defensive back or wide receiver as the case may be. An example of some highlights can be found at the link -> here

P.S. It's called "gridiron" here to distinguish it from AFL ("footy"), rugby union, rugby league, (yes there are two rugbys, that sometimes go by "football'), and soccer (which is actually called soccer just as often as it's called football, believe it or not).

I ask this because I bug

I ask this because I bug everyone about it... are you in Australia (or is your gf also a Michigan grad)? If so we're trying to grow our alumni network out here, currently we have a FB page and are working on a website, had our first event in Melbourne last year. It's an exciting time to be a Wolverine in Australia!

If you have to ask...

Then it's probably too much.

Nothing to do with sabermetrics

Pitch counts have nothing to do with sabermetrics. Sabermetrics is about using data to predict or make better decisions about the game... pitch counts are basically based on gut feelings. The data is mixed on the issue. Might be blaming the wrong source here.

In Australia

Never forget that Wolverines are everywhere- when the East Coast is asleep others are awake!

Don't you mean

Go Bleu?

Adelaide, Australia

I live out here (roughly 10,000 miles away) and see M gear every few weeks somewhere. Most bizarre was seeing the Block M and word Michigan across it (old logo style) on clothing in the window this women's fashon store called Supre in Rundle Mall... I'm not sure people realised that was a real place/university those models were advertising.

correction

It's gonna be on Foxtel, 6AM local. Enjoy!

I'm in the same boat on this

I know there won't be any places showing it... it's just a matter of having the correct live stream. So far this season I've been waiting for the full game to be uploaded on MGoVideo before watching or checking the score, which is painful and too much for this game. So... I have no idea unfortunately.

Totally random note...

So I noticed UM Fan... that you're in Sydney. I'm in Adelaide! We're having a UM Alumni event in Melbourne on the 28th... any chance you could make it down? Did you see the email we sent out through the Alumni Association? They don't have great contact info for our alumni here so I wanted to ask.

Also, if you know any other UM fans in the area we are really trying to build our network here- this is actually the first event of its kind. I am sure we can find some way to exchange contact info.

Thanks and Go Blue!

P.S. I am not sure if this post was a joke or not...

International...

So the earlier update said that y'all would be reaching out to international backers separately... is that still coming or did I miss it? I look forward to showing off my HTTV on my desk in Adelaide and eliciting all the confused looks I can.

Thanks!

Aussie?

Aussie kicker? Who is the staff looking at? Is that just a general sentiment that they want an Aussie?

Given that I'm living out here, I'm curious...

Adelaide

I will also note that my city of Adelaide, Australia made the list. This is entirely unrelated to Bolivia but in fairness the post is entirely unrelated to Michigan (except in the MGoBlog inside joke context).

Adelaide is amazing and incredibly underrated, especially when the only cities most Americans seem to know in Australia are Sydney and Melbourne (with a few knowing Perth and Brisbane). Beaches, wineries, a decent night life (1.2 million people in the city), and gorgeous weather, and nothing is more than a half hour's drive from anything else.

Well I've only lived here

Well I've only lived here four months but in 2015 the race will finish in Adelaide so you're damn right ill be cheering them on in full M gear. I'll probably get my friends to do the same, I'm converting them one Aussie at a time.

Or Australia

Or Adelaide, Australia. Never forget that someone is reading... it's like Christmas morning every day to wake up to a deluge of content. When I visit at night to find the board active... such a bonus.

From an O's Fan

You're absolutely right. As an Orioles fan (Tigers are my second-favorite team but I'm from Baltimore) Lombardozzi for Gonzalez was considered a real coup, he is a great addition for this team so far. Honestly I am not sure what the Tigers were thinking at the time- Lombardozzi is still a young player with defensive versatility. Gonzalez was never considered a long-term part of the O's future, but fans are excited about Lombardozzi as a role player for them.

34-17

Because they will scare us that much.

I would agree, but...

I kind of thought the same thing about Brad Stevens- I thought only Duke could drag him from Butler.  I wouldn't bat an eye at any move at this point.

Oberon

I am in DC and so grateful they have it here. Plan to continue on Oberon for the rest of the night!

It's all about perspective

I try to remember back to the beginning of the season and think about what my expectations were.  Was Michigan the best team in the country?  Honestly Louisville was pretty dominant and yea, they probably really were the better team.  That doesn't diminish how far this team went.  This season was a coming out party for Michigan, a basketball juggernaut resurrected for the long haul.  So they didn't win the title- only one team ever can.  I try not to think about the game itself, that is just one data point on a whole spectrum that show the upward trajectory of this team. Big picture, this has been an amazing time for Michigan basketball. One game can't spoil that.

THIS

I don't know who you are and of course no University fundraisers would ever go on the record, but... THIS. YES. THIS.

The football program was long a way to funnel donors into the academic mission of the university. They would start by making gifts to the athletic programs and would subsequently get better acquainted with the academic side and start to fund scholarships, professorships, etc. Now those donors are being sequestered, with no one else from the university allowed to talk with them. This eliminates most of the residual benefits to the actual university (we are a university, not an NFL team) from having an athletics program.

Money for money's sake is just paper

Money in and of itself makes nothing better or worse.  Dave Brandon is successful at making money.  I hope he does not alienate the older donors who will provide some of the endowed long-term funds for the athletic department.

Regardless of that, being profitable (just as having money in life) is only valuable in how it is used.  Building new monuments to vanity that do not advance the basic academic mission of the university are not as important as maintaining our integrity and identity as an institution.

Dave Brandon is very good at what he sets out to do. He is a very talented man.  I question what he is setting out to do.  The AD is more than a CEO, he is a representative of the University.  I didn't come to the University of Michigan for the football, I came here for the finest education I could obtain at an institution that had integrity, identity, and class.  I want our representatives to care about more than making money.

Health System

The health system is one of the most inefficient medical systems in the country in terms of fundraising, which is why those folks need those kinds of cuts.  The University kind of lets them operate on their own turf, which has its downsides.  Those folks need to clean house and learn how to raise money properly.  They have the facilties, they have the experts- now they need to learn how to pay for them.

I hate the need to buy up all the property in Ann Arbor- when I was a student and a few years after I could see the need, but at this point it is feeling a bit sprawling.  The best thing about Ann Arbor is the city/university interplay.  If it becomes all university it takes away what made my experience unique, and what I think makes Ann Arbor such a wonderful place to live.

The story on Maryland

I think the post sells Maryland short.  First of all, a Terrapin is a specific kind of snapping turtle, not just an ordinary turtle (not that it makes a big difference).  Second of all, yes their uniforms are garish but that is better than them coming out in drab red and white garb like about 40% of the rest of college football.  They are trying to build a fanbase by puffing out their chests and being a bit garish- not every school has the strong automatic affinity we do at Michigan.  There is an effort there.

There has been a ton of mismanagement but the reason they wound up in this financial situation is largely the result of investing millions over the last couple decades in Olympic sports at the expense of football and basketball- they have some of the best soccer and lacrosse facilities but of course have let their football facilities languish until recently and even then, it's rough.

Maryland basketball has fallen on hard times due to Gary Williams being a bit of a Lloyd Carr in letting the program slip as he neared retirement and Mark Turgeon is really turning things around.  Football is a mess because of firing Ralph Friedgen (who wasn't great but was a solid 8-win coach) and hiring Edsall, but now that they can compete on more even footing with Penn State (which has made a career out of poaching the best Maryland talent) by being in the same conference they have a shot.

Finally, don't rip Maryland baseball too badly.  After all, they were good enough for Michigan to hire away their coach earlier this year.

Divided loyalty here

My twin brother went to Maryland so while I would love to go to Michigan games in College Park we are both cringing at the thought of having to root against each others teams (we both grew up Michigan fans).  I live in DC (he lives in Baltimore) so it would be nice, but terribly awkward.  So personally I have to lean on the side of not being in the same division for selfish reasons.

Oh, and New Yorkers won't go to Rugters for a game the way DC folks would show up in College Park anyway.
