New dining hall and central air (!). Maybe global warming requires it...I can only remember a few days in four semesters when it was actually hot outside between Labor Day and April 30. The dorms mirror the arms race in athletic facilities, but it's uncapped student loans form the government fueling the inferno instead of TV rights.

I was a third-generation UM student, but I may have been part of the last generation where UM was affordable via personal savings in a single income family. My dad (BS '65 MBA '67)had a good job with an income that allowed us to be middle class. My mom (BSN '66) worked as a nurse for a year after graduation but was a full-time homemaker and mother after they got married. My parents saved enough to pay for out-of-state UM tuition for me and my older brother. I am eternally grateful.
A generation later, my wife and I both work and there's no way we'll be able to afford UM tuition for our kids when that day comes. It currently sits at 229% of what my parents paid for me.
So the university's student population consists of:
Those whose families can afford to pay tuition outright.
Those who borrow $80k ($200k out-of-state) or more in non-dischargable debt for a bachelor's degree.
Those who receive academic or need-based scholarships.
We heard a lot last year from disillusioned African-American students who felt isolated on campus because they were even more outnumbered than in years past. This is a milder form of the same lament, but the emotions are the same. Not sure what the solution is, but building palatial dorms, classrooms, and administrative space while jacking up tuition while government loans moving in lockstep enable it...how long can that trend continue?

It's escaping me right now. Maybe it will come to me.
BTW, I don't follow UM hockey very closely but when I read "dirty MSU hockey player" I thought "I be this is about Conboy or Tropp." Sometimes people stand out from the crowd.

I lived at MoJo for two years. I am a year younger than those guys; this was my freshman year, their sophomore year. My roommate was a sophomore from Inkster. I decided to roam the halls a bit and see if I could spot the celebrities.
I reached the first floor by the staircase and Jalen, Ray, and Jimmy were there. One was sitting on the stairs, and two were sitting on a table facing the stairs. This was a big deal to a wide-eyed freshman.
Runner up: my solo karaoke of U2's "Desire" at the end of year party; I am not a great singer but I was the first person to get up there who could carry a tune at all, so I got a lot of applause. People who had seen me in the hallways all year without recognition were suddenly saying hi to me.

So my favorites (so far) for the 2016 class are:
K'Lin Epps (not to be confused with K'Len Morris)
I miss you, Butler By'not'e.

Plus he has a boo-boo on his face. Maybe the refs kicked one of the opposing players out of the game, that usually makes me mad.

Also, in my professional life I wish that short-term disability coverage had different initials.

Like Dane Crist. Frankly I hope that ND hires Paul Chryst the next time their job is open. It would be so perfect.

With some college-level strength and conditioning he could do really well. He and Teske would be an interesting contrast.

Sweet relief. Or whistling past the graveyard.

The lemons-into-lemonade reverse at 3:50 was spectacular. I believe I was at that game but don't remember anything about it other than my friend's reaction to seeing the Stadium for the first time.
I remember Woodson making a tremendous (!) tackle against Texas A&M in the bowl game his freshman year. He overran the play, stopped on a dime, lunged backwards, and tripped up the A&M ballcarrier with one hand. He also left that game with a knee injury and I remember thinking "no no no no no no!" If that happened today we'd hear all about it, but back then the internet was plain text email and confer groups. It must have turned out to be minor because I never heard another thing about it and he was back to being himself by the following season.

A few of them in excruciating fashion for the PSU faithful. That was good.
The loudest PSU fans have been horrible in the wake of the Sandusky scandal. There are plenty of nice PSU fans and I feel for them. But they are drowned out by the nutcases.
I think they're in for a tough few years. They'll be lucky to finish third in the B1G East anytime soon. Franklin is okay but he's a puntasaur in a division with three aggressive game day coaches who will have better talent than he has.

You share a set of grandparents with your first cousins.
You share a set of great-grandparents with your second cousins.
You share a set of great-great-grandparents with your third cousins.
And so on.
Second cousin once removed is either the child of your second cousin or the second cousin of your parent.

Last year's UM team would be favored to sweep them.
Our team was playing poorly before Levert's injury but we should be well motivated for the games against MSU. We have three game s to get used to playing without Levert before traveling to East Lansing. The schedule sets up nicely, with four days' rest for UM before each meeting. Please please please.

I heard from some friends who attended that it was a good time. I wish I could have been there; alas it was a weekday evening with lousy weather and some parental obligations. JUB told the Cannavino story when he was here a few years ago promoting Bo's Lasting Lessons.
I got to chat with John Kolesar at that event. Kolesar is about seven years older than I am, so he was torching the Buckeyes during my most impressionable fan years. Plus he was a skinny kid from the Cleveland area who attended Michigan, and even though our similarities ended there, he was my hero. I think I did okay keeping it cool. He told a great story about how Woody Hayes was indirectly responsible for his attending Michigan, with an assist from a surprise source. John's dad, William Kolesar, was in high school when Woody got the job at OSU. Woody's zeal for juco players rankled the Ohio high school coaches, including William's coach at Mentor High, Lee Tressel. Tressel encouraged Kolesar to attend Michigan instead, which naturally led to John growing up a Michigan fan.
