More for the terrific road trip (it's closer to my home than Ann Arbor is), plus they rarely sell out so the stadium would have lots of maize and blue. And we should be recruiting western PA pretty hard.
The ideal game is a well-known school that may not be all that great at football. Think the inverse of App State. And they have to have a big enough stadium that they come close to filling to make an away game worth it. Examples, at least based on recent years: Tennessee, Miami, Syracuse, Texas (I know they're on the schedule already, for when my 4yo is in high school), South Carolina, Stanford, Cal.
If we can get one of the "big boys" to agree to a home-and-home, then let's do it: USC, Alabama, Texas A&M, Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Florida State.

it's that pro sports leagues do everything they can to ensure Cleveland teams are championship contenders.

I belonged to a co-ed student group all four years I was at UM. We had a pretty decent flag football team, and took full advantage of the co-rec rules. During playoff action we scored a late TD but failed on the PAT and time ran out with the other team ahead by two. We hung around, dejected, talking about basketball season while our opponents celebrated. Thinking about the co-rec scoring rules for basketball made me think of the rules for football. Our final touchdown had been scored by a female player. The refs had scored it as six points instead of the nine (I think) that the rules specified. My roommate and I raced to the Mitchell Field office and barked out our case for the win. The ref for our game blinked and said "shit, you're right." We ran back and celebrated with our team while the other team wondered what the heck was going on. Then I did this: *
* not really

for MSU 2004. Or were you not sitting in those seats for the Braylon game?
Except for when I was a student (1992-95) I have sat on the side opposite the press box, so my perspective is reversed. When watching games on TV I forget that left is north, so my brain places the student section in the wrong corner. So what do I know.

As you may recall it was hot and windy at kickoff and the temperature dropped fast after dark. Shifts in the weather sometimes give me migraines, and my head was starting to hurt. Plus we were down what, 28-10 after that long TD. I had argued with an MSU fan at halftime when he came to talk trash to the curmudgeonly elderly couple sitting in front of me, who I was surprised to learn were his grandparents (nice family!) and I didn't relish seeing him again after the game was over. I worried that I would end up punching him. So I left.
I heard the crowd noise and some of the announcer comments walking back to my friends' house near Packard and Stadium. I watched the rest of the game with them and their toddler daughter. So at least I got to celebrate with good friends.

for Catholic young adults in Cleveland. I heard the news from an OSU fan, who seemed a bit unhappy to relay it. That made the news even better, plus I didn't have to deal with the strain of that game in real time.

Because they can. In fact, they would be dumb not to. Any tuition increase results in an increase in the government's willingness to loan money to students to pay that tuition. That's a broken system.
What gets me is the schools' constant fundraising drumbeats. Why do colleges need their alumni to donate more and more money? What are they going to do with it? Will they lower tuition if they get enough donations?
The LSA dean spoke to our local alumni club about ten years ago. A parent of a then-current student asked what the school was doing to keep a lid on tuition increases. The dean did his best not to smirk and failed. I was impressed that he did not laugh hysterically and pound the lectern with tears streaming out of his eyes. That's not their mission - their mission (aside from education, of course!) is to keep tuition marching upwards and justify the expense by doing more and more peripheral things.
In 10 years my daughter will be graduating from high school, followed four years later by my son. My wife and I make far more than my parents ever did, but our ability to pay for their college education will be less than half of my parents'. That's fucked up.
