For me, I'm not purchasing HTTV this year because I think the blog has cannibalized the content that HTTV would normally contain.
With each year, the amount of new content on this blog has increased (as has my year round viewership of it) and by the time HTTV rolls around, I feel like it's predominately a printed (and repurposed) export of the blog with just a sprinkling of brand new ideas / pieces.
I should clarify that last year was the first time I had this feeling and this year will be the first time I'm not purchasing HTTV (won't stop me from dropping some coins into beveled guilt).
My father, who does not read MGOblog (or the internet in general) would be thrilled with HTTV as it truly does destory all other "preview" publications and he has no access to the content otherwise.
Just my thoughts. Niether team performance nor alleged bullying from Brian (or whatever the claims) play into my decision at all.

|21 weeks 6 days ago||My take||
I think the greater point being communicated by Colter and his specific movement is that, these kids are being recruited to attend an institution of higher learning and then are locked into strict contracts of their coaches exacting standards, which leaves them no choice but to compromise the very education they came for, lest they get their scholarship pulled. And they have absolutely no seat at the table or member representation with the NCAA or the schools themselves.
They seek to be represented.
Even above and beyond that is the millions of dollars everyone in charge of "looking out for the kids" is making in this rigged game. The kids should be able to organize and represent themselves.
Where do I draw the line? Today? Men's Football and Men's Basketball. Women's Basbetball might not be there yet and honestly, I don't know enough about other sports

I agree that saying "don't rock the boat" is condoning bigotry but that was not the point of my post at all and if your Rosa Parks joke is at my expense then you missed my entire point.
There is a difference between making commentary on the current state of affairs and endorsing the status quo. My post makes no reference to reinforcing the current culture of bigotry in the NFL.
What my post is saying, is that because there is a culture of bigotry it would make sense that when gay players do start coming out, team chemistry may take a hit as the lockerrom could be split.
Personally, I welcome the day where people don't have to put up a front because a portion of our population can't identify or understand their experience and has to resort to fear and hatred.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||BiSB you are correct but so is ijohnb||
BiSB, your points are absolutely correct but I think you are misinterpreting ijohnb's point.
I think the statement is "I am not conding bigotry, I am merely acknowledging its existence and the reality that it would impact the dynamic of the team. It would likely cause a rift amongst the homophobics and the non-homophobics (which is exactly what happened with racist whites and non-racist whites during integration in baseball and the movie Remember the Titans starring Denzel Washington). This statement should not be interpreted as my opinion on whether gays should be in the NFL or out while in the NFL or anything of the like."
ijohnb even mentions that he is talking about reality, not necessarily the way things are:
"I am not talking what should be. I am talking what is."
Just to put it out there, no, I have no dog in this fight (zing, but that's because niether one of you are making negative statements, unless I totally invented my own interpretation of ijohnb).

There is a steroids problem in high school sports (not just football) so I only imagine by the time you get to major D1 and then professional level, the usage rate is in the 80% or higher range.
I might be naive but I sort of assumed that anyone who watches major sports expects nearly every athlete to be using some form of steroids / growth hormone to compete at the level society desires.
If steroid use was rampant in baseball, a sport where the performance increase isn't going to be as extreme as football, then how can you honestly watch the NFL and not expect the same?
Maybe most folks are just operating under willful ignorance?

|1 year 51 weeks ago||Internship veteran here||
I went to RIT and for my program (Computer Engineering) we had to essentially have 1 year of work experience before I could graduate.
My first internship was writing software for Office of Naval Research in Panama City, FL and it was pretty much one of those "set you in the corner and we'll see you when you're done" kind of things. I didn't have any mentor, nobody really interacted with me and I just flailed around making tons of mistakes but did finish my assignment before all was said and done. Learned a lot about how to help myself and got to see what government work was like.
My second internship was for 6 months writing software for a "design shop" in Rochester, NY and it was a little more structured. I actually had someone who would review my code and let me know what was wrong with it or why I should do something a different way. It gave me an idea of what the environment is like when your software is the product you sell.
My third internship was for 6 months writing software at Intel out in Hillsboro, OR and it was the best of all my internships. I had a phenomenal manager who really helped paint a picture of how things in IT work and while I didn't really have anyone giving me tips on my code, I got a lot of value out of understanding organizationally how things fit together.
So, between all three of those experiences, I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking for in a full time gig and what type of company I really fit in with. Ultimately, I think my internships were the most valuable parts of my education and put me above a lot of smarter but less experienced people when it came time to landing a full time job (not to mention all the interviewing I had to do along the way).

Anyone who doesn't have Robert Griffin #1 on their list right now is not paying attention.
Griffin's statline has been completely unreal thus far (2 games), 41 of 49 passing with 8 TDs, 0 INTs and 624 yards. You can also tack on 107 rushing yards and the guy even caught a pass this year.
I hope Denard can keep improving every week so his name is still being mentioned for the Heisman in January (or December, whenever they award it) but right now, RG III should be getting most of the love.
We know what Denard is capable of and we haven't seen most of it yet.

It also failed to show an increased risk of arm injury due to breaking pitches, such as curve balls."

|3 years 9 weeks ago||I'm on the fence||
I'm on the fence about interleague play.
I hate the idea of it from a pure baseball perspective but the selfish part of me likes it because I live in Portland and I get to see the Pirates play in Seattle every 5 years or so.
Without that, I'd have to go to San Fran to see them play which is a much bigger deal and if I am going to necessitate airfare, then I might as well just fly to Pittsburgh.
So, it's much like smoking bans, politically I couldn't disagree more but selfishly don't mind reaping the benefits (although in this case it is very infrequent but better than never).
|3 years 9 weeks ago||I hate the DH but....||
I hate the DH and am a National League kind of guy but I can't help but think that the current system really favors the American League in both inter-league play and the World Series.
When an American League pitchr has to hit, I'd say the NL has a marginal advantage because theirs hit all the time. BUT, we are talking pitchers here, what's the real difference between your average NL pitcher hitting and an AL pitcher's average when they have to hit? With no data, I'm inclined to say not so much.
When a NL team has to field a DH, they pull their best bench guy into the starting lineup. If you compare the stats of that guy against the average DH hitter, I am going to guess that you will find a much bigger and more significant difference.
So, I'm one of those people who say both leagues should have a DH or niether should.
Also, Go Bucs!

|3 years 10 weeks ago||Teams don't draft on talent alone.....||
Teams don't draft on talent alone, they also take into consideration how well a player "fits" the team.
Millen was actually on the money with the pick because Rogers fit that team quite well. It was Johnson, the all-pro, who wouldn't have been a good fit on that historic 2008 Lions team.
|3 years 11 weeks ago||Points are useful-ish||
Points are used to keep the boards somewhat self policing and introduces the ability to have "trusted users.
The trust is mainly two fold, one so trolls and other wastes of time have to at least pretend to be real posters until they can create board posts and rate others' posts.
The other use is that when people try to break "omg Denard is transferring to Miami to be with Tate!" rumors, before everyone flies into a panic they can check the poster's points total and if they are very high one migh think that poster is actually trustworthy.
The second is where I see the biggest flaw in the system because some users with high point totals are consistent non-value add posters and really have just integrated their life into MgoBlog as if it were Facebook. Also, some folks never post until they actually have something "insider" and then they get lampooned for being untrustworthy.
Overall, i think points are useful-ish but I could probably live without all the posts that simply say "you getting poz banged bra" or things of that like. They have probably filled a void in some people's lives though.

|3 years 19 weeks ago||I don't have the data but a thought.....||
I don't have any data but just a thought, is there any difference in the default or forclosure rates on FHA loans vs Conventional?
My gut feeling would be that someone who can only put 3.5% down would be a riskier investment than someone who puts 20% down.
If that were true, you might be limiting who can buy your condo by not being FHA certified but you'd be helping to mitigate the risk of a buyer defaulting or forclosing which could cripple your property value.
If FHA loans don't default at a higher rate than Conventional loans, my entire post is worthless.

|3 years 32 weeks ago||Stop being delusional||
Why do we act like his statements aren't true though?
A lesser passer (Denard, Persa, Cam, Tebow, etc.) can succeed in run spread offenses compared to a pro style attack. Pryor throws "well enough" and can run with the best of them when OSU calls for it.
He chose to play in a pro style offense to hopefully oneday become an NFL quarterback. By making this decision, he sacrificed (knowingly or not) the big time COLLEGE success we are seeing from Denard and Cam. With that said, Pryor has not developed into an NFL quarterback and with one year remaining in college has his work cut out for him if he wants to realize his dream (in any capacity greater than Pat White did with Miami).
If you don't think Pryor could complete the passes that Denard does, you are delusional and simply fooling yourself.
His humility and humbleness however could never compete with Denard, Cam, or most people outside David Boston.
|3 years 40 weeks ago||We've played one good opponent......||
We've played one good opponent thus far and Denard has one bad game. Is that merely a coincedence? As UM fans, we all say "total coincedence" but to the outside, they don't care.

I think that Brown is the better athlete (and may have the higher NFL upside) but there is no doubt in my mind that Minor is the better running back.
How many times have you seen Brown just run 100 mph directly into the line before a play has any chance to develop?
Minor seems to do such a better job of recognizing the holes and even creating his own.
So, I definitely favor Minor getting most carries with a few Brown runs tossed in to change the pace.

Attempted drug deals across state lines are a fairly sizable offense as is assault but what are you even complaining about?
Nobody (outside of East Lansing for the most part) cares about what is going on at MSU. How many SEC fans do you hear say "I hate Michigan State!" Probably zero, because Michigan is a much bigger deal. People care about Michigan all over the country (love us or hate us) and right now the trend is to pile it on.

|4 years 51 weeks ago||Never had much of a chance||
The Nats didn't have much of a chance as Omar Minaya traded away the likes of Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore, and Orlando Cabrera at the end of the Expos existence.
I still remember the year they were in the hunt for the wildcard and wanted to bring up Terrmel Sledge (who was dominating AAA) but since that would increase payroll the other MLB teams (that owned the Expos) blocked the move.
|4 years 51 weeks ago||The Nats are in trouble||
The Nats are the worse team in baseball and have a much worse farm system than the Pirates. I think they have a much longer road back to respectability and it is funny that Sean Burnett is the one talking. That guy only gets to pitch during mop up time.
|4 years 51 weeks ago||Pitt......really?||
Why is everyone so high on Pitt? The longer that Wannstedt is there, the lower the program is going to fall. They lost their D-coordinator who helped them beat WVU and they are now with their only flash on offense, McCoy.
I think we are best off shooting for Oregon State as they finish respectably every year (and are slow starters which would bode well for us).
I don't know anything about VA to justify playing them but if Duke is able to turn the corner, I would be all for that game.
I just want to play someone that we have to show up and execute to beat. I want us favored, but I want their to be a realistic chance that we could lose.
|5 years 1 day ago||What are you doing?||
What are you doing bringing stats and being educated on the Pirates?
I think you are supposed to just say "rabble rabble Pirates suck".
It's tough when you are one of the worst major leagues while simultaneously having one of the worst farm systems. I think most people ignore the farm system part.
Neal has delivered lots of young talent that is as good or better than those who they are replacing. The only move he's done so far that hasn't proved to be a winner was the Jason Bay trade. Laroche is finally starting to realize his potential but I think Moss needs to pick it up in order for this trade to be viewed as a success. The pitchers we score in that are just a train wreck.
The Nady deal on the other hand has been a total steal.
