|5 weeks 18 hours ago||Single biggest complaint||
My single biggest complaint is that every piece of footage crammed into that piece was selected to fit HBO's narrative: "Jim Harbaugh is (too) competitive and wears out his welcome everywhere."
Competitive, yes, but as Gumbel pointed out in the post-story conversation, so is every other coach. Wants to win too much? Yep, like every other coach.
They mentioned that at each of his last three stops, he "wore out his welcome." Really? That certainly could be argued for the Niners job, but it is a ridiculous statement for San Diego and Stanford jobs in which case he simply left for better opportunies. That's called career advancement, not wearing out your welcome.
Even the Alex Boone footage seemed edited carefully to be provocative. I suspect there was a lot more stuff that we will never see because it didn't neatly fit into the selected and tidy narrative.
Irresponsible journalism? Maybe, but I think it's more just lazy.
1 out of 5 stars with the 1 being for the "huddle the fuck up" clip. Honestly I enjoyed the other video that came out yesterday showing Jim interviewing Jameis Winston much more.

Classic cognitive dissonance. I think he probably did like Harbaugh in spite of being a Buckeye. But now he's still stuck on a sinking ship while Harbaugh is off to glory at Michigan. So Boone feels a little better rationalizing this as Harbaugh's fault while he and the rest of the team are about to be immolated in the tire fire that is the 49ers organization.

I'm curious about your statement "this blog's more conservative bias." Are you talking about Brian and co. or the posters on the site? In either case, it seems like a real reach to characterize either in a place where the rules specifically forbid overtly political discussions.
IMO, it's best to avoid political discussions as it almost never ends well, and worse, you often end up learning something about someone's beliefs that negatively influence your opinion of them.

Hopslam deserves its place in history, but since its introduction there have been many significant improvements made overall in brewing and a lot of exciting, new players have entered the game.
As others have also mentioned it is essential, especially for IPAs to drink it fresh. So I would encourage you all to drink local whenever possible. Look around, there is probably more out there than you can image. If you happen to be lucky and live close to great brewers, even better.
For me I'd take most Vermont IPAs, anything by Toppling Goliath, Pipeworks, Trillium, Alpine, NEBCO, Boneyard, Societe, Russian River, Three Floyds, Surly, Maine Beer Co, and many others over Hopslam. The problem is that most of those beers don't see much distribution, so again, unless you are trading for out of market beers, find out what's locally available as a fresher beer will always be better.

I have very vivid memories of watching Ty's highlights the first time. At some point I stopped counting how many times he ran for 50+ yds TDs. It was incredible, bordering on comical. That was when I dreamed of seeing him play in a winged helmet. The whole USC thing from the "accidentally" bumping into Arnold Schwarzenegger during a recruiting trip to the eventual commitment really stung.
I always felt we were the perfect fit for Ty. And now it all happens, even if a year or two later.
Welcome aboard young man! And Go Blue!
|51 weeks 12 hours ago||Nice work||
This has been done on the Interwebs before where I've seen B10 programs mapped to GoT families. In that case Michigan was equated with the Lannisters.
As far as the OP's take, I agree on most with one huge exception, the Ohio State as Tywin. Any time you say superior intellect and Ohio State, you have completely lost me. If you were doing B10 coaches, I might buy Urban as Tywin, but as another poster already suggested, Little Finger is a much better fit. I had recently gone through this with a friend and fellow M grad. The Hoke = HODOR! was unavoidable. And yes, I've learned to have a much healthier sense of humor about our program lately.

Brian, as someone whose work revolves around watching and writing about Michigan sports, I've often wondered if you'd ever lose your passion as a fan. I've heard many members of the media talk about how it just doesn't feel the same anymore to watch games or when they are not working they have to consciously flip the switch to enjoy the experience as a fan.
However, reading this piece reminds me of what you are and why so many of us come here. You are first and foremost a fan, but you have a way at articulating what many of us are feeling even when we cannot find the words ourselves.
When I search for information about other college teams, I am reminded that most schools don't have anything remotely close to MGoBlog. Thoughtful, intelligent, often humorous (and free!!) content that so often resonates deeply on the things that matter to us most as Michigan fans.
Bravo Sir to you and the MGoBlog staff.

|1 year 9 weeks ago||Trading Beer with other MGoBloggers?||
Pretty sure Brian is on the record that he hates drinking threads, but I've always thought there is a great opportunity for MGoBloggers to connect with each other to trade beers. I know there are quite a few people on here who know their beer, have reliable access to fresh locals, and would be interested in getting out of market brews.
Obviously these arrangements would need to be managed outside the blog, but wondering if enough others are interested. We could always set up a shared Google spreadsheet to track interested folks (e-mail address where you can be reached), what market you live in and any specific beers you can get, and specific beers and/or varieties they are interested in trading for, e.g.
If you're interested, reply here and speak up if you have a better idea for how to connect outside MGB.

|1 year 14 weeks ago||Another vote for True Detective||
True Detective is easily the best new show I've seen this year. First couple of episodes may feel slow, but that's because they use investigative interviews with McConaughey and Harrelson as a plot device to relate details of a prior murder investigation.The acting in those scenes, particularly McConaughey, is riveting. As others have said, things do start to pick up. The closing sequence in Episode 4, six minutes filmed in a single, unbroken shot, will have your heart racing. Episode 5 which aired this past Sunday is the best yet. Plot moves quickly with some big reveals that set the stage for the final three episodes.
Another show that I really enjoyed was the BBC Sherlock series. I binge viewed three seasons in a couple of weeks. If you haven't seen the show, each season is only three episodes; however each one is about the length of a movie ~90 mins. The first two seasons are available on Netflix and you can stream Season 3 online or via the PBS app if you have Apple TV.
Have heard great things about Banshee so that might be next.

|1 year 18 weeks ago||Trying to draw parallels here...||
- Think about something you do well.
- Imagine people exist that rank your performance against peers say you are elite, one of the ten best at this thing.
- Job offers flood in two years before your eligible to begin work.
- One offer stands out, a company you know well with a great reputation. Someone you trust has strong ties to a head honcho there.
- You go for an on-site interview, are blown away by the experience, and accept an offer on the spot two years before your start date. You learn that another top 10 guy signed up to start on same date. Amazing!
- Immediately you start getting contacted by company shareholders telling you how great you are. Odd that strangers are contacting you, but they are saying such nice things reaffirming your decision.
- Fast forward and after a promising first quarter, the company begins to struggle. Other companies are contacting you more frequently with offers equally if not more enticing. You research those companies. Stock prices soaring, scads of top talent signing up. Looking further, one company has outperformed yours 11 out of 17 times during your lifetime including 9 of the past 10. And now the two time reigning "company of the year" is showing interest.
- You stick with your decision, but the company's performance continues to decline. Once again they are outperformed by their biggest rival. Rumors begin circulating that the CEO may be in trouble, that your advisor's connection is on the chopping block. The other elite prospect who signed up with you suddenly backs out. He's looking at other companies closer to home; one is named company of the year shortly after.
- You are confused. Shareholders from all over are telling you what to do and how you should feel. The company close to home is telling you that you are the answer. And then it happens. Your chosen company fires the guys who most strongly connected you to them. They bring in a new guy who is very respected, but you don't know him. Your friends and family recommend you look around a bit. After all there's plenty of time. Rumors start circulating that you might be on the market again. Some stockholders at your favored company suddenly aren't being nice anymore. It all feels crazy.
- You call the company and tell them you are backing out. Not completely out, but you need time to reassess your options. You have many. You have time.
Not a perfect analogy*, but put in these terms, I can better understand what this young man is going through.
* Imagine if you got a job offer and started hearing from shareholders. Guessing most wouldn't like that.

|1 year 23 weeks ago||No panic here||
If he were a 2014 kid, this would be really awful news this late in the game. But he's 2015. Plenty of time to identify other options or for him to come back around. Given Hoke's policy of "no visits" and Campbell's desire to look around, a decommitment was necessary. It certainly decreases the likelihood of us landing him, but I think a decommitment would be a far more damning development if we were like most schools that do allow verbal commits to look around.
Certainly respect his right to weigh all options before making his decision. Still would love to see him suit up at Michigan.

|1 year 35 weeks ago||As a frequent WTKA listener||
I have to stand up for Ira (not that he needs my help). While I do agree with the consensus that Sam is a better radio personality, Ira complements him very well. Together they are better than either one separately. In addition, Ira is the program director which is a huge responsibility; I'm quite impressed he can keep the plates spinning and run the show when needed.
As far as the incident discussed here, I don't really take much offense given what I've heard. Any long time fan of the Lions understands how snake bit that organization is and has always been. Sure Ira can at times get up too long on a soapbox which is easy when you control the airwaves. Perhaps a character flaw, but that's who he is. I have never doubted his enthusiasm for or allegiance to Michigan.

Very sad news. A Michigan grad losing his life in a senseless act of violence should not be Way OT or OT at all.

How would you compare the stadium experience in 2011 to 2013? I was at the first game and while not the biggest game I have attended at Michigan Stadium, it was the most electric atmosphere I have experienced there. Was Saturday's game the same, better, worse, or just different? Details appreciated.

A spectacular locally brewed DIPA. On deck, Bear Republic Cafe Racer 15, another DIPA. After that, maybe some DC Brau Corruption, a single IPA. Picked up a sixer of the latter today that was canned on September 4th. Yes, I'm a fool for my IPAs. The fresher the better.

That can't be right, can it? If people around here are bitching about a 240 lbs freshman RB, how will they react to a 220 lbs DB? Personally I love the idea of a 220 lbs Wolverine who runs a 4.3 - 4.4 forty blowing up opposing players.
|1 year 39 weeks ago||2 stand out||
1) Minnesota @ Michigan 1986 - Gophers QB Ricky Foggie breaks free for a long run to set up soul-crushing game-winning FG. Dropped the Wolverines to 9-1 and took them out of national title picture. I was woefully underdressed for this one. By the time the game ended I could not feel my hands or feet. The walk back to Markley was absolute hell.
2) Michigan @ Northwestern 1998 - Justin Fargas had a career day in one of the longest, hardest downpours I've ever seen. Field was a disaster, a complete mud pit. It rained up, down, sideways, and all three at the same time. In spite of three layers of clothing, I was absolutely soaked to the bone. At least we won this game. Michigan's QB that day: Tom Brady.

Got lucky and found some last night at a bottle shop here in DC area. I'd only seen it once before, on tap during DC beer week two years ago.

Always liked Tom Brady, but this visit, that speech, oh that speech. He has immediately shot way up near the top for me. So pumped, I'm ready to put a helmet on now. Thank God my eligibility has expired.

Damn, way to lay down the gauntlet Coach Brown!
I will say this, if the atmosphere of UTL2 is anything like the first one, I think Da'Shawn is going to be blown away.
UTL1 was not the most important game I've ever attended at Michigan Stadium ('97 Ohio State comes to mind), but without a doubt, it was the most electric environment. It was a very, very different experience. And to those who criticize the pom poms and the Seven Nation Army, I would guess (a) you weren't there or (b) you're already dead and just don't realize it.
Oh, and if I saw Hand running toward me wearing a gas mask, I'd ship my pants.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||Few off top of my head||
I'm sure Brian and co. have heard many of these before, but here are some things I'd be in favor of:
- Ability to direct message other users.
- Separate channels for different types of discussions. Limit to reasonable number (7 or fewer) and select carefully so they are as mutually exclusive as possible. Otherwise people will have to hunt around to much to find info.
- Ability to create a customized message feed based on user preferences (by channel, key word(s) and/or tags).
- Notification system: e.g., notify when Hello posts, main board posts, new posts to a thread you have selected to Track.
- Voting of yesteryear (as mentioned already by several)
- Improved page layouts. Current layout is cluttered by persistent links to non MGoBlog content. Wouldn't say eliminate them, but if that content were layered, accesible on separate page(s) via one or more links, you could open up the page, allowing the feature content more room to breathe.
- Mobile first responsive design. Would eliminate need for the app. (Sorry Elaydin)
- Reconsider separation of Diaries vs. Messages. Quite frankly, I'm not sure the difference is all that clear cut. I find the Diary content pretty hit or miss. Anything extremely worthwhile tends to get promoted to Main Board anyway.
- Reconsider New vs Recent vs Hot. Maybe it's the nomenclature, but not really sure how those work. Pretty much stick with new.
- Automatically surface trending / popular content.
- Easier integration of multimedia content.
- Ability for users to create polls, voting.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||Ok I'll take the bait||
Lists like these are always debatable as beer tastes are purely subjective. However, I do believe that sites like Beer Advocate which crowdsource beer ratings from beer drinkers across the world, tend to get closer to the truth about who is making the best beer. Which I suppose begs the question does best brewer = people brewing best beer? I think that's what really matters.
The beer landscape is changing rapidly. Old guard craft brewers like Boston Brewing and Sierra Nevada are sentimental choices, but frankly have been surpassed by many, many new brewers. Even the next wave that displaced them, looking at you New Belgium and Dogfish Head, are not really in the top tier IMO.
What I really like about craft brew industry is how someone can seemingly come out of nowhere and brew some mindblowing beer that's light years beyond what most are brewing. Looking at you Toppling Goliath.
Brewers not mentioned on the list that I would include:
- Hill Farmstead (perhaps best brewer in the world)
- The Alchemist (if you only brew one beer, why not go for #1 rated beer in the world)
- Firestone Walker
- Toppling Goliath
IMHO, the best on that list are:
- Three Floyds
- Russian River
- Cigar City
- Boston Beer
- Dogfish Head
- New Belgium (although they have a decent sour program)
- Sierra Nevada
- Devils Backbone

|1 year 44 weeks ago||Farewell Jon||
So much has been written about Jon Falk over the years, all of it good, which in itself says a lot about the man and his importance to the Michigan football program. One of Bo's greatest legacies was his eye for hiring the right kind of people that would sustain the program's excellence long beyond his own years as head coach.
Had the pleasure of meeting Jon outside Memorial Stadium in Lincoln last year the day before the game. Clearly he was busy, but he took a few minutes out to chat with the group and pose with us for some photos in front of the big Michigan equipment truck. He could not have been more gracious. /cool story bro
Wish him a long, healthy, and happy retirement.

|1 year 48 weeks ago||Hasn't dropped here yet||
How is it?
|1 year 48 weeks ago||Hello||
|1 year 48 weeks ago||Stone has a good thing going there||
I've had several of the batches of the Enjoy By releases and so far and they have not disappointed. Really helping promote awareness for fresh beer. Makes all the difference in the world, particuarly for IPAs.
Honestly, I'm more interested in the Alpine beers you often post about. Nelson is a favorite, but also love Duet, Exponential Hoppiness...basically any of their IPAs.
I'm sure Brian would hate it, but would love to set up some MGoTrades with others so people from one region could experience great beers from elsewhere.
Oh, and for me tonight, I had a Zombie Dust (acquired via trade) followed by a Two Hearted (on tap where I had dinner). Also sitting on some Maine Beer Co. brews (Lunch, Weez, Mean Old Tom). Tonight I found a couple of bottles of Bruery's anniversary ale Bois. Looking forward to trying one and laying the other one down for a year or two.

|1 year 51 weeks ago||Helluva lineup||
Damn, that's a really solid lineup and not at all limited to West Coast offerings. Would love to try some of those BA brews (Speedway, Brandy Hunaphu, DL Variant). The Alpine IPAs are phenomenal (at least equal to Pliny IMO). Is the Kern River Citra fresh? Thought it was a one weekend per year release. I traded for some after release earlier this year and it was tremendous. Have't had pleasure of trying anything from FW's sour program. That stuff doesn't make it out to East coast that I've ever seen.
My version of beer nirvana will occur the weekend of the U Conn game this fall. I'm arriving a day early and will be visiting Hill Farmstead then staying overnight in Waterbury to drink Heady Topper, Lawsons, etc. Can't wait.

The days of elite players from national programs staying to graduate are past us. I don't fault Trey or other contemporary players for leaving early if their draft stock is at or near peak. Now if you mean if he ever graduates, i.e., he fulfilles graduation requirements after leaving a la Juwan Howard, then perhaps I can agree with you.
|2 years 6 weeks ago||Who would have believed...||
Who would have believed that two years ago as we bemoaned losing Darius Morris to the NBA that a young man from the belly of the beast would come and in two short years help us win our first B10 title since 1986, guide us to a #1 regular season ranking, win every player of the year award that matters, return us to our first NCAA title game since 1993, and then leave as a certain NBA lottery pick.
Trey Burke, one for the ages. Best of luck. You done good kid.

Lot of poorly officiated games. Sometimes the calls swing your way--see game, Syracuse--and sometimes like tonight they don't. But let's not act like the refs denied us the victory. That's disrespectful to both teams who played one of the best NCAA Finals we've seen. Sucks we lost, but I'm proud of the way we fought the entire tournament including tonight. No shame in losing to that Louisville squad. They're a damned fine team.
