Something about all this Hatch medical discussion really bothers me. We should all hope that he stays on a real scholarship and recovers to eventually contribute in meaningful minutes, even if that is extremely unlikely. We already have excellent depth going into next year. You are all advocating that we tell Austin that the chances of fulfilling his dream are too slim that he might as well just give up. And you want to replace him with a 1-and-done?
What the hell is wrong with you people?
We are rooting for a bunch of 18-22 year olds playing a ball game, representing a university. I would much rather have Austin Hatch on the team I support, even if his chances of playing meaningful time are 1 in a million, than some mercenary who is using the team as a pit stop.

I incorrectly deduced that Brian looking for help in verifying the email, followed by the FOIA response, followed by WD claiming he was "duped" - meant that Brian was not able to verify and WD was trying to save face. Sorry WD, you didn't deserve to be attacked personally. I hope that these events have not dissuaded you from pursuing a career in journalism.

Third of Five Stages of Grief: Bargaining
|2 years 27 weeks ago||We are ranked #9 in total||
We are ranked #9 in total defense, but #50 in defensive FEI.
Pretty obvious what is going on here. Total defense is not adjusted for number of possessions or garbage time. Defensive FEI is, however: "The Fremeau Efficiency Index (FEI) considers each of the nearly 20,000 possessions every season in major college football. All drives are filtered to eliminate first-half clock-kills and end-of-game garbage drives and scores. A scoring rate analysis of the remaining possessions then determines the baseline possession efficiency expectations against which each team is measured. A team is rewarded for playing well against good teams, win or lose, and is punished more severely for playing poorly against bad teams than it is rewarded for playing well against bad teams."
Some combination of garbage time, low tempo, and/or crushing shitty teams is inflating our traditional stats and making us look like a top 10 defense. Obviously, we do not have a top 10 defense.

I think its important to look at the tax implications for the NCAA and the players. That system sounds like some new type of deferred compensation that hasn't been vetted by the IRS.
1) Amateur status - gone (what does this do to the NCAA and its tax-exempt status?)
2) I can see a few ways in which the athletes might have to pay taxes on earnings they haven't even seen yet. That makes the situation worse in the near-term. Can you imagine the tax bill that Denard would see if he had been paid either through endorsements or performance incentives?

Just a fan trying to read the tea leaves, biding my time before the games start. Not a scout, friend, relative, or insider.
As a fan, all that should matter is wins. Following that thought to its logical conclusion, none of it really matters because its just a game and I don't personally know any of the players. However, I am a fan and being a fan means that I enjoy speculation about the depth chart.
On Miller being big enough:
Yea ok maybe the numbers for height and weight look fine. But that doesn't account for strength or body composition. Hearing that Glasgow is stronger is evidence but not proof that Miller lacks the desired strength for the position. Then you take a look at him and he's not the leanest lineman that we have, in addition to being the lightest lineman vying for playing time. Its enough for me to have the theory that he hasn't locked down the starting job because he tends to get physically overpowered.
If he's reaching the limits of his genetic potential for strength and size, that means his upside is limited. Football teams are expected to improve as the season progresses. If Glasgow is even with Miller now but has better upside... no brainer, right?
I guess its a moot point, since the "insider" view is that Miller has already locked it down.

Fitz and Glasgow sound like starters to me.
Hoke isn't gonna start an unproven true freshman over a proven senior who has a family to support and needs the attention so he can get an NFL paycheck.
Glasgow is "big and powerful" compared to Miller who is "smart". You can get smarter over the course of a season playing as center, but you're not getting any bigger. Just look at a picture of Miller. He looks like somebody trying desperately to add weight, but who doesn't have the genes for it. He looks as puffy as a marshmallow.
If I'm Hoke, I'm fed up with the same questions/demands from the media:
|3 years 35 weeks ago||http://www.rollbamaroll.com/2||
If you scroll down to the 3-3-5 section, you'll see my initial impression of a defense designed to beat some of these presumed Borges concepts. You've got lots of coverage and speed, and decent size (this being Alabama). I'm sure there are soft spots in the zones where you might be able to shoehorn some of these routes.
Do you think any of our scheduled opponents have some or all of the pieces, scheme, and defensive coaching ability to run something like that? Maybe MSU? Although they tend to leave their corners on islands, exposing them to smash routes.
Obviously, we dont have to worry about Bama until the BCS title game XD
|3 years 35 weeks ago||I mean, I'm high on this||
I mean, I'm high on this offense too, but that is just an unrealistic viewpoint (i.e. will work against anyone). The modern spread-to-run offense with zone blocking is supposed to "work against anyone" if you read the homer blogposts describing the reads, but then defenses went to scrape exchanges which helped to negate the read. I'm curious about a defensive counter to the concepts described above.
Also interested in personnel. The article above generalizes players based on positions and generally accepted qualities about the position (e.g. LB bigger, but not as good at covering as a DB). Our opponents' defenses have lots of options for personnel and formations; some players can probably deal with everything we'd throw at them. Think Jake Ryan blowing up option plays by being everywhere at once.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||Awesome article. I understand||
I understand the matchup advantages that Borges is trying to develop. However, I don't really know enough about our opponents schemes and personnel.
Who will these work best against? I'm guessing smurfy DBs and LBs without good coverage skills. Northwestern?
Which teams are equipped to deal with this? I'm guessing OSU because they probably have bigger, faster dudes, but I think they're breaking in a new nickelback, and I'm not sure if he's a Courtney Avery type or a Dymonte Thomas type. Looks like the first chart with the smash routes doesn't really do anything to occupy the inside LBs. Should I worry about that MSU double A-gap blitz killing the concept?

Just a lazy argument. Yes some football players are worth more than their scholarship can be valued at. But that isnt known when they sign up for the deal, which is before they even play a down for the team.
The current system is INSURANCE. It is designed to pay for volleyball players' and wrestlers' scholarships with the profits from football and basketball. It doesn't matter that a single player may be worth more than his scholarship, much like it doesn't matter that I haven't been to a doctor in years yet I still pay my healthcare premiums.
1. I'm down with the full cost of attendace / stipend thing, since it treats all scholarship athletes the same.

I'm gonna disagree strongly with you there, probably because I use a broader definition of excitement. He's not likely to end up as the most valuable player of his recruiting class, but I'm really interested to see how Borges uses him.
As a reader of this site, its easy to find analysis of spread offenses, and I got to see it first-hand while watching the team during the past 5 seasons. There's also plenty of discussion on "Pro-style" and "West Coast" offenses out there, but those articles are generally filled with jargon and inaccessible to me since I only obsessively watch one team (that hasn't had the personnel to run that system). Now that we have the personnel, I look forward to learning about a new system, especially the concepts that are more nuanced than "Our guys are bigger and faster than yours". Hill, Shallman, and the flex TE's represent those concepts.

"I study him," [Michael Jordan] says.
When LeBron goes right, he usually drives; when he goes left, he usually shoots a jumper. It has to do with his mechanics and how he loads the ball for release. Whats the deal with the Kenpom paywall? I know Brian and Ace liberally publish paywalled things from Kenpom.
Seems backwards to me. Mgoblog doesn't publish paywalled recruiting info, yet doesn't seem to respect the recruiting sites. Mgoblog has a ton of respect for Kenpom, but basically every paywalled piece of information that would be interesting to a Michigan basketball fan is published on the front page.

I use a Firefox add-on called "Easy YouTube Video Downloader 6.7". Works well, I haven't had any issues - but I haven't tried downloading any super long videos. After you install the add-on you get a button that says "Download" right under the subscribe button.

Funny comment, I know the feeling.
You can probably add em up, depending on what you want that number to represent. An adjustment like the one Moleskyn suggests above would definitely help matters. For example, going from 2 to 3 is more valuable than going from 6 to 7 (considering that only 5 OL start)

HOWEVA - they were tiring to read at times. Have you considered breaking the series into smaller posts? Snark this rich is a delicacy, and must be consumed in small flakes like truffle.

here's my workaround:

2) use Filer to move the file to your listening app of choice

the mathlete= the knowledge and all of the knowledges wild ass predictions are from some crazy next generation statistics that the mathlete/knowledge is hoarding to himself. of course he's using this secret knowledge to accumulate wealth and street cred by betting solely on wildly unlikely prop bets.

"BONUS SCHEDULING TIP: The Big Ten should seek out opportunities to have rival weekends where, say, Minnesota football and hockey come to town at the same time. The travel equation changes dramatically when you get a hockey series on top of your football game."
Synergies, man. I bet DB would blow a load in his pants if you pitched this idea to him.

If 2011 wasn't horrendous, then they don't need to be drawing that much revenue. Relative to input(revenue), output(results) sorely disappointed.
The question I was trying to ask is: How much worse would the results have been if UT football revenue was 10% percentile instead of #1. This may be a bad example, as I'm not well informed on how the program allocates its capital.
|4 years 39 weeks ago||Interesting idea, but where||
Interesting idea, but where do you draw the line? Does "highest levels" mean top 5 or top 25? Clearly, we need to be in the same ballpark as Ohio State, but the fan in me wants to be #1. Texas is Texas, and blows everyone out of the water for revenue. But what benefit do they get from taking in more money than everybody else? Has all that money done anything to mitigate the horrendous product on the field?
|4 years 39 weeks ago||Disagree||
Universities view students and fans as customers, not stakeholders. That's probably the wrong way to go about things, and if you look at the student loan bubble, you'll see the results.

|4 years 39 weeks ago||how else to spend the money?||
Businesses spend their profit in one of three ways: 1) capital expenditures 2) M&A 3) dividends.
For a football program, #2 is clearly out of the question (although it would be awesome if we could buy one of our poorly performing rivals and make them a feeder program - just imagine, Little Brother could be more than a nickname).
#3 represents giving that money back to the athletic department and/or school at large, which we already do by funding the rest of the sports.
That leaves #1. Buying signs, renovating buildings, paying for top notch staff. Personally I'd rather spend more on our coaches and less on garish signs, but I see the MBA-style logic in DB's decision here.
The fourth possibility is just giving the money away to charity or whatever. I think I speak for most of us cynical folk here when I say that we won't be giving away any significant money after chasing the dollars with such vigor in the first place.

I don't understand how earnings of 47 million gets you to a valuation of 94 million. In M&A activity, businesses typically go at six to ten times earnings. Shouldn't these teams be worth significantly more?
