Reading between the lines of…

Reading between the lines of Juwan’s version, he clearly wasn’t addressing things proactively and he basically admits it, albeit indirectly. You’re right, he needed to take command of that situation and he didn’t. While I agree it’s really bad form to upstage your boss, the reality may well have been, Jon was working in a pattern of behavior where trying to get a private 1:1 meeting with Juwan to talk it over it wouldn’t have gone anywhere or been effective. Juwan may have routinely avoided or not followed through on such discussions or confrontations until they became entirely unavoidable. Given the emotionally defensive posturing Juwan admits to, I would bet on that being the case.

So while this kind of escalation is not desirable, I’m not sure how meaningful it is to place blame on subordinates- they’re acting in the environment, based on the largely invisible/informal incentive structures in place, and when things don’t get addressed proactively, these kinds of blow-ups are the expected result. Every system is perfectly designed to get the results that it gets.

I think people weren’t aware…

I think people weren’t aware of how serious his surgery was. He literally was facing death and trying too hard to be what he thought he was supposed to be. As he acknowledges, it was his defensive behavior patterns that doomed his tenure. No ill will towards the man. Hopefully, in the end the change leads to better things for all.

Attention to detail can cut both ways. Belichik is known for his attention to detail, but given his coaching tree maybe he’s taking care of a few too many details himself and leaving blind spots for the staff. However I choose to believe this isn’t true of Herbert.

FTR I love Craig and if you think this is a hate post, consider what would compel Craig to opportunistically troll the listening audience with such a superlatively sesquipedalian, painstakingly paced, yet self-deprecating tangent, and consider if maybe someone might be compelled to play along by jumping on board the proverbial ride, to use the parlance of our times.

If we learned anything from…

If we learned anything from Roman Wilson’s Rose Bowl vlog, it’s that North Dakota is full of people who wish they lived in South Dakota, which is the good Dakota and also there should be only one.

Also “Pepper Persson and pour pucks into the net.” is good alliteration but allow me to proffer an amelioration: “Pepper Persson and pour pucks  betwixt the poles.”

Brian used the term “stealing valor” re: the jump around and that was in hindsight, yes, a huge turning point. This three year run has been tremendous.

Not to sound ungrateful BUT…

Kind of bummed there’s 0 in-game footage. Roman always had the best edits, really put his own character into it above and beyond “just” a highlight reel. But I get it, dude has a couple other things going on.

Nonetheless, a glorious video to remind us of the superlative hype with which this team dripped. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, BABY!!!

Trail running is harder in…

Trail running is harder in some ways, but especially at first. Once your stabilizer muscles, which aren’t nearly as activated running on a level surface, get stronger then it becomes easier. I switched to trails over street running because I find it’s easier on my knees and ankles, plus the scenery and air quality tend to be nicer, plus plus lots of shade and cool air in the woods.

I like the idea of a long distance run on dirt trails - much better than the idea of a marathon pounding your connective tissue on concrete and asphalt - but 5x marathon distance? That’s crazy. Do they sleep?

They are glorified thugs and thieves, like so many, but her having cancer won’t result in greater equity among the people of this world, so we can allow ourselves some sympathy IMHO and maybe even show some restraint in digging up old wounds

A better use of time and energy would be to pitch a reality TV show to the BBC where they exhume the remains of Oliver Cromwell and contestants get to compete over who can come up with the most poetic ritualistic defilement of the old bastard’s rotten bones. But then, this thread probably wouldn’t be the best place to do that, either…

Some may recall meme shirts going around back in the early-mid aughts that “Jim Tressel drinks wine coolers”

One time I saw a dude dressed up in a pretty spot on Tressel costume, visibly drunk on wine coolers, whilst promenading up to the stadium on game day. Not sure if he made the broadcast (or made it to halftime) but I was impressed

When I was a student, the band played from the northeast corner, directly across from the student section. This made perfect sense because they played toward the students who sang back to the band. Classic call and response, among the deepest roots of humanity.

At some point they stuck the band amid the student section, I would guess because the tickets were cheaper to give up. Alas!

IIRC it was included in the main page’s post about him when he was hired. It was definitely on a board post about him.

Except you’re comparing…

Except you’re comparing driving after drinking, which is not harmful but is correlated with increased risk, with directly harmful behavior. A more appropriate comparison would be to some upstream  factor that’s harmless on its own but determined to increase the risk of battery- incidentally, there’s an observed correlation between watching sporting events and domestic violence. Should watching sports be criminalized with a nearly zero-tolerance policy? Should we invoke horror stories of trauma and domestic violence every time someone talks positively about watching sports- which by the way is entirely voluntary and not a need (if you think it’s a need, get help!)

The majority of traffic fatalities are caused by sober drivers. So what about the people killed by sober driving? What about them?

Given his history, he may…

Given his history, he may actually have a serious problem and I might see keeping him employed contingent on completing rehab, following some monitoring routine, etc.

Because regardless of whether we think the rules around DUIs are problematic, the fact is the legal consequences are what they are, and even if the guy was barely over the limit and not a significant threat to anyone, he still made a bone-headed decision to get behind the wheel especially given his priors and how much he stands to lose. He made that decision, prioritizing driving himself after a few drinks and putting it all on the line. To me, that says the guy may have a real problem. But depending on the circumstances, it may be in everyone’s best interest to show a path forward that results in positive change instead of instant expulsion, if that path can lead him to clean up his act.

That said, he may not have been over the limit. Equipment used to measure roadside BAC is notoriously flawed and its manufacturers notoriously fraudulent in their claims of accuracy.

IMO the big Cardi B style money moves were more an act of desperation than evidence of them really having their shit together. Which isn’t to say the move won’t pay off necessarily- but if it does, it’s only because they threw everything they could think of at a serious issue, and the likely payout from bringing in mercenaries is short-term. Is it sustainable? Will it address the root cause of their recent failures? I don’t think so. And as you point out, losing their RB coach in this fashion indicates there are still *some* troubles in the verdant earthly paradise that is called Cumbus Ohio.
