|1 hour 1 min ago||An aside re: Doyle/Donnal||
I did the math on each Michigan player's rebounds per minute the other day with the idea of starting a thread. I was surprised to see that Donnal had one more rebound per 40 minutes than did Doyle (8 to 7).
|3 hours 13 min ago||rebounds per 40 minutes||
Max was second only to DJ Wilson (who played 24 minutes all year) on the team last year in boards per 40 minutes. He's not Mitch McGary, but neither is anyone else on the team.
|3 hours 55 min ago||Is there a downside to having Max back?||
You'd feel like you have to play him if he's better than Doyle/Donnal/Wilson but you'd prefer to play for them for sake of long-term development? I can't think of anything else.
|4 hours 6 min ago||tangential story that I enjoy telling||
I used to live in Boston, and I had a friend who went to MIT. If you're an MIT student, you can (or at least could) use your student ID to borrower a sailboat and take it out on the Charles. It's the best student perk I've ever seen by a mile. I should have been a brilliant engineering student, in retrospect.
|4 hours 13 min ago||That seems right (re: being a walk-on)||
My blood pressure has gone back down, and I thank you.
|4 hours 23 min ago||Are you being negged now just because?||
I'm failing to see how someone could dislike this comment.
|4 hours 46 min ago||I don't understand||
I realize John Beilein's socks know more about basketball than I do, but the team can't be 1/3 guys who didn't have power conference offers. And they don't have any positional needs for 2015.
Take this guy, and you then need two current players to leave the team before 2016 if you're going to be able to add a PG and a SG. And why stop recruiting Seth Towns if you might take this kid?
|5 hours 3 min ago||I'll second the SNUBA recommendation||
It's a really enjoyable experience and as close as you can get to diving without going through the training process.
|6 hours 19 min ago||Class of 2018 means he was born in 2000?||
High schoolers are really young these days.
|6 hours 24 min ago||You're dodging the point||
Ace asserted that the Seahawks should have scrutinized Clark's incident more thoroughly before drafting him, and people are arguing against that. We already live in a society in which people are scrutinized for significantly less serious matters when it comes to hiring, and the people arguing against Ace are ignoring that. You could argue that employers shouldn't be allowed to not hire you because you wear funny pants or because you have an annoying laugh, but I haven't seen anyone do that.
|21 hours 55 min ago||Yeah||
I'm not sure why this is hard to accept when companies can refuse to hire you because they don't like your shoes or because you chewed gum during your interview.
|21 hours 57 min ago||People's motivations are complicated, but...||
...I think Ace posted this mostly because he cares about domestic violence. And there is nothing invalid about arguing that the NFL should have high standards when it comes to domestic violence. People are constantly influenced - very intentionally - by other people all the time. Watch a football game and you'll be bombarded by messages like "Drink Beer!" and "Watch more football!" Why not try to influence them in such a way that might eventually decrease domestic violence?
|22 hours 32 min ago||Michigan will be okay in 2015||
But Brown would have made a trip to the Final Four much more likely.
|22 hours 32 min ago||I was told he would deliver...||
...and that I should know he's a forgiver.
|23 hours 2 min ago||Just my guess:||
I'll bet Michigan is stricter with regard to character in a sense and that Coach Beilein in particular doesn't pander as much as other coaches. My (ultimately irrelevant) fear as the Brown recruitment was closing was that Calipari would woo Brown by having no scruples whatsoever with regard to what he was telling Brown while Coach Belien would be very reserved. While that didn't end up mattering with Brown, I'll bet it has with other recruits.
|23 hours 5 min ago||Well, I don't mean to knock the guys, but...||
...Spike, Rahk, and Dawkins were all picked up at the last minute.
|1 day 18 min ago||You're forgetting a basic part of the NFL's place in society||
It's successful because people like it. No one needs to watch football or buy NFL products. And people can stop liking it for whatever reason they want. Just as the NFL doesn't have to punish people for violent off-field acts, fans don't have to stick with teams that have players who've commited violent off-field acts.
I'm not arguing Frank Clark shoudln't be able to play in the NFL, but there is plenty of room to talk about the manner in which he's come into the league. You say Ace has only expressed his feelings, but what else is there with respect to the NFL? It exists only because of our feelings about it.
|1 day 2 hours ago||A couple points:||
First - and this is admittedly somewhat academic - a court never says you're innocent. It will only say you're not guilty. I also highly doubt that Clark's plea agreement asserted that he was not guilty of any given charge.
Second, society doesn't have to treat not guilty in the eyes of the law as the equivalent of not guilty in fact, so to speak. OJ Simpson comes to mind as person who most of us are comfortable treating as a murderer even though he was found not guilty in his criminal trial. An even more stark example, in a sense, is the fact that employers in Colorado can screen employees for marijuana use even though marijuana use isn't illegal in that state.
My larger point is that neither the NFL nor the public has to drop this issue as a result of Clark's plea agreement. What exactly should be done re: Clark is another issue, one that is admittedly hard to resolve.
|1 day 2 hours ago||Well done, Ace||
|1 day 3 hours ago||He should be an excellent player for Duke||
I wish I wasn't feeling so negative about MBB recruiting, but there it is.
|1 day 15 hours ago||Your second paragraph||
It doesn't have to be more complicated than that. It's a shame that basic politeness is controversial.
|1 day 16 hours ago||that's kind of the point||
If a number people of Irish descent felt exploited or slurred by the name, it would need to be changed. They apparently don't, so it's not a problem.
|1 day 21 hours ago||I don't know||
I believe Walton may have succeeded in spite of being spaced out. Further testing of spaced out centers is needed, if nothing else.
|1 day 21 hours ago||I don't think it is, but...||
...it would make sense to redshirt either Teske or Davis for the purpose of spacing out the centers among the classes. Otherwise your centers in 2016 are Doyle and Donnal as juniors and Teske/Davis as freshman.
|1 day 22 hours ago||Exactly||
|1 day 23 hours ago||There was no board post saying he'd picked UNC...||
|2 days 3 hours ago||FWIW||
Sam Webb gives MSU a slim lead in the Winston recruitment. MSU was a big leader early, says Sam, but Michigan has closed that gap somewhat.
|2 days 4 hours ago||Davis to prep||
I'm not doubting you, but where does that idea come from?
|2 days 5 hours ago||a PG first||
Right, Michigan seemingly needs a PG first. Next year, Walton will be a senior and Spike will be gone. And Michigan only knows for sure that it will have one spot available next year.
The problem with offering this guy right now would be that he might commit given his other offers. Then you can't promise a Cassius Winston that he'll have a spot. Michigan can afford to offer the Tyus Battles of the world, because they'll obviously choose other schools. You offer a Tyus Battle just for laughs. But this kid might say yes.
|4 days 17 hours ago||well, congrats to Cal||
The kid said he cared about academics, and you can't call him a liar. And he'll go to the NBA no matter where he goes.
