Hart had the best vision and instincts, for lack of a better word, of any running back I've seen at Michigan. I'd want him if I had a mediocre line. He's going to get you something when there's not much there to be had. But I'd take Wheatley, Biakabatuka, or Boles if I had a good line. Those guys were more likely to rip off big gains after the line got them to the second level.

It looks like he has stabilized his life, but his young son recently died.
|1 day 19 hours ago||I didn't watch non-Michigan DLs closely, but...||
...Ryan Glasgow was an animal - a dirty, filthy animal, like a greased warthog - all year long. Second team seems unlikely to be appropriate.

I would be very unhappy if I were one of Indiana's six football fans and the firing was just about a personality clash.
|1 day 21 hours ago||What the...||
Know who you are, Indiana. This reminds me of Minnesota firing Glen Mason.
The only thing that would make this make sense would be some sort of off-the-field issue.

...an exasperated Coach Beilein say, "What are you doing?" to Irvin after the play.
|2 days 14 hours ago||ugh||
It's now two-plus years of a team that goes to the corner and curls up in a ball anytime they get hit in the mouth. They lack an on-court leader. They seem like a collection of parts. Walton and Irvin are too often just guys.
It's hard to be very invested in a team that seems to lack heart. That may be a fan/feelingsball way to look at things, but it seems very real.

Does anyone know why the Army-Navy rivalry has become so one-sided? Has it mostly been coaching? I guess is that the emphasis on football and caliber of athletes available are pretty much equal between the programs.

...until I fall asleep tonight. I don't have your optimism, but I like it.
|4 days 14 hours ago||The defense is going to be so thin||
And nearly all of the team's catches are walking out the door.
|4 days 14 hours ago||Re: Peppers||
I just looked at Charles Woodson's stats from 1997 and was surprised to see that he only had seventeen catches + carries on the year (Peppers had 29 this year). Woodson returned punts, like Peppers. But he did not return kicks that season. And it's worth remembering that Woodson didn't face fast tempo offenses like Peppers did...I wasn't thrilled with the use of Peppers on offense either, but it's hard not to yell out "this guy is getting the ball" to the other team without him being on the field a decent amount as a decoy. And the coaches may have rightly decided that Michigan was better off with Peppers getting some rest so he could play defense.

I'm not sure.
|4 days 18 hours ago||A few thoughts:||
OSU's first two touchdowns were the result of interceptions. Some caution was warranted.
The play calls didn't didn't cause guys to miss blocks, drop balls, or commit penalties.
The play calls didn't cause the refs to ignore pass interference.

I hope your OSU family, friends, etc. were alright today. Terrible stuff.
|4 days 22 hours ago||FWIW||
I think we'll see a number of Harbaugh teams that are as good as this one. The defense might not ever be quite as strong, but the offense has a lot of room to grow. Beating OSU is always going to be very difficult as long as Meyer is there, but I don't think we should expect to look back at this team as a once-in-a-decade group. Imagine three years from now with a Harbaugh-recruited QB at the helm and an OL that belongs entirely to Drevno.
|4 days 23 hours ago||yeah...||
Next year's game will be in AA, obviously, but it should involve a much-improved OSU and a very young and inexperienced Michigan. I can't say I'm optimistic.
|4 days 23 hours ago||At this point...||
...commiserating with everyone here on the blog is inseparable from my Michigan fandom. I wouldn't want to be miserable about sports with anyone else.
|5 days 15 hours ago||Charlton's play||
Something that pains me about yesterday is that I'm not sure we'll see a better performance by a Michigan defense against a Meyer-led OSU offense. I'm confident we'll see a better Michigan offense go up against Meyer and OSU, but yesterday may well be the peak defense - especially at DL. You'd hope a line made up of this group would be enough for a win.

I said yesterday that I wished Harbaugh hadn't criticized the officials. I take it back. Fuck it.
|5 days 18 hours ago||Smith at RB||
Sticking with him made sense. Isaac has a history of putting the ball in the deck. Evans and Higdon are young. Smith is a reliable ball handler and pass blocker. He also seems to be an emotional leader. Michigan was in safe hands with him, a quality whose importance shouldn't be underestimated in light of what turnovers meant for the team yesterday.
|5 days 19 hours ago||I wished they'd used Peppers differently too||
IIRC, they had success using him as a running back last year, handing him the ball with no gimmicks involved...But I don't know what they prepared for in practice but then didn't think they could use for whatever reason. And maybe Peppers wasn't up for playing 75 snaps (or whatever amount) for whatever reason. You have to have him on the field a decent amount for his presence not to telegraph that he's getting the ball.
|5 days 23 hours ago||I appreciate you writing this||
I'm having a hard time right now imaging a win over OSU as long as Meyer is there. But you make a good point.
|6 days 2 hours ago||I thought of that same comparison||
Michigan could be Miami to OSU's Florida State as well. But my preferred comparison is that Michigan is the pre-2004 Red Sox to OSU's Yankees. Boston was often really good. They just rarely were better than the Yankees.
|6 days 3 hours ago||Meh||
Yesterday was no worse than your typical MBB game at Indiana. Officials make mistakes and are influenced by crowds. That's nothing new. It seems unfair in the OSU rivalry, I think, only because the Big House almost has the feel of a neutral site game. But that's not the fault of officials.
|6 days 10 hours ago||"it's a yearly execution"||
That's how I've come to look at it. I'm not proud of this, but various recent events left me unable to head into today ready to have my heart broken like Ralph's yet again. So I assumed OSU would win and even did some napping during the game (I have a concussion, which helped this effort). And I ended up glad I'd done these things, because I don't need misery from sports...I agree that it's tough to see Michigan turning the rivalry around. Meyer is one of the top twenty or so college coaches ever (at least). And OSU recruits itself. I'm not sure right now that I'll even watch the game next year. It just becomes a drag on one's life after a while.

Though they don't work particularly well as spoons either. They're really just plastic sticks. Lousy sporks.
