Rationalizing his decision for him:
Academics are a wash. Cal's great, we're great, whatever.
He's probably a lottery pick regardless of the skill development going on.
Berkeley weather > Ann Arbor weather
And the real tiebreaker for any 18 year old dude: California girls.

And give him a competent defense corps (say, in the Olympics) and he's a world beater.
This roster should not have made the playoffs, and definitely shouldn't have pushed Tampa to 7.
|3 days 8 hours ago||Yeah, the roster needs some||
Yeah, the roster needs some work. Defense corps is bad, there are some scorers but no one really punishing to play against in the playoffs. Abdelkader is the closest but isn't a great offensive player yet and after him the next most physical guy who's a threat to score is... Datsyuk. Desperately need a power forward.
Since the officiating always lets more physical stuff go, the Wings' plan of speedy little guys start struggling. And Zetterberg, god bless him, is showing serious signs of aging.

Other than the third goal on Monday, yeah. That was an... ill advised rush he attempted.

Zidlicky has been very, very bad in this series. Though I mean... Kindl. Yikes.

Hit to the head made that a possibility. Palat not being suspended for this hit (also from game 6): https://fat.gfycat.com/DeliriousPortlyCassowary.webm
is kind of ridiculous now.
The NHL's inconsistent enforcement of the rules drives me completely up the fucking wall.

Soria. Was last year too not that Ausmus noticed.

Didn't say it wasn't smart. Especially since the Wings defense corps is let's say lackluster. Need to slow them down through the neutral zone. It's just not a super fun brand of hockey to watch, in my opinion. But Babcock is going to get paid a ton for a reason, he's the difference in this series thus far.
As for the non-calls, the most obvious one was Zetterberg yanking Johnson down with his stick after a whistle. But there was plenty of that stuff if you were watching the neutral zone play closely.
Of course, Tampa's gotten away with some stuff (and theirs have usually been more dangerous: the two slew foots on Datsyuk, Garrison going for Abdelkader's head) too, but I thought game 5 was tilted towards Detroit a bit. It happens some times.

I'm a Wings fan and usually whine about the calls, but Detroit got away with a LOT in game 5 in terms of hooking, holding, tripping, etc. that went uncalled. They're basically playing ugly ass Michigan State hockey in this series.

Also IIRC they aired the Magic the Gathering World Championship sometime in the late 90s. And that took off as a televised event, obviously.

Wouldn't shock me if Blizzard is paying them to air the thing. God knows they have the money.

What are the stats like since Howard returned? My non-numbers impression is that Howard lost his confidence and has been awful.
Though yeah, the main problem is that the Wings have one above average defenseman and honestly he's been mediocre this year.

This would be more of a "shots fired" situation if we were actually still in the same conference with Iowa and ever played them.

So is say, Birth of a Nation. Which is suuuuuper racist and harmful for a whole variety of history of the Lost Cause movement reasons. Though it is a revolutionary film and a useful thing to use to talk about the Lost Cause movement, which is why it's still used academically.. It just being a movie is not a good dismissal.
That said, I haven't seen American Sniper so won't make direct compasions. Though this sounds like the kind of liberal activism that is super annoying to me, a pretty lefty type.

Should be noted the guy in that case says he hadn't had anything to drink and she had. How much seems like a major point of contention.
The lesson here is: don't hook up with drinking people, especially if you're sober and you can't at least claim a double standard for men and women.

Look at me acknowledge that in my post. Because I'm all fair and shit. Let's take what looks like the baseline from that study of 50%.
Doesn't really matter if half of women didn't report or a third or a fourth. That is too much.

And the problem and the reason for the push towards universities handling it is the criminal justice system also has no fucking clue how to handle it.
Which is why I am frustrated by the seemingly simple answer of "the universities should just let the justice system handle it." That doesn't actually work. And the solution we're trying now does seem kludgey and ineffective.

|3 weeks 4 hours ago||The definitions in the two||
The definitions in the two studies are totally different. The BJS study has a much stricter definition (threats of rape, criminal sexual assault, attempted rape, rape). The other survey includes things which are not really prosecutable but are unwanted sexual contact, like fondling.
Also, it's incredibly difficult to poll this particular question. There were two surveys in '97 that were worded slightly differently and one found a rate of assault 11 times higher than the other. Knowing the methodology of the NCVS (in person interviews included) I suspect they're getting an under reported number for the same reason the police are. But that's just a personal suspicion.
|3 weeks 5 hours ago||Actually we can. We've||
Actually we can. We've studied this issue. Because women will say things in private that they won't say to the criminal justice system. And DoJ has compiled that research here. (PDF)
2011 was the most recent year they had data for and 27% of people who said they were victims of rape had reported that to the poilce. Admittedly, that looks like it may be an outlier and the more usual rate is closer to 50%. Either way, yikes.
|3 weeks 5 hours ago||Actually, they're absolutely||
Actually, they're absolutely terrible at it. http://www.propublica.org/article/police-fail-stop-nfl-darren-sharper-ra... for a highly prominent example
Because police are terrible at investigating sexual assault and the courts aren't particularly good at convicting even in open and shut cases it's gone underreported. So there's been an impetus to set up an alternate process that victims can have faith in. Which for the most part has failed. The Daily just had a report this week on one such case where the University did an extremely poor job of informing the victim what she could/should do in the new process. And of course the prominent journalistic fuckups have hurt in public perception.

He did! He just failed at dropping it so someone could play it. More Patrick Roy than Dan Cloutier to borrow famous playoff miscues against the Wings.
|3 weeks 8 hours ago||The advantage of playing in||
The advantage of playing in Tampa is it's less of a home ice advantage. Tampa's been desperately trying to make sure Wings fans don't get those tickets. Easier to win there than in MSG or Montreal.
Not that home ice is a big deal in hockey and the Wings don't really have the defense or goaltending to make a deep run.

Joining the military doesn't make you immune from criticism. And the dude lied about a lot of stuff. Like punching out Jesse Ventura, Who sued and won. During that suit Kyle admitted some of the stories in his book are untrue. He also claims he shot dozens of American citizens post-Katrina as part of an illegal military deployment.
Dude was a liar.
