Speaking as an OSU recruit-nut, this is definitely the accepted story among OSU recruiting insiders. Not knowing for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if Penn State's graduation rates among African-American football players, at some point in the past 10 years, was higher than OSU and Michigan's.

Comparing Sony and MSFT's other business is laughable. Sony is a $20 billion company, MSFT is literally 14 times that. This is definitely critical to Sony, but it's a very small slice of the MSFT revenue and profit pie.
Comparing Apple TV to a console is also misguided. Apple TV is less powerful than most smart phones. It couldn't even run 360/PS3 level games.

I didn't quite understand the hubbub. I know DRM is a bad word on the internet, but we have it every where. Phone apps, tablet apps, books, music. Video games will move to mostly digital over time. MSFT should have let that happen naturally and been prepared for it (as they seem to be) when it does. No need to pick fights you don't have to pick.

I don't think Sony was being totally truthful here. Some more details:
Basically, 3rd party publishers can implement some sort of DRM that would disable games, or at least online access.
I wouldn't be surprised if the policies of the 2 consoles converged to the same thing. There's no way a compnay is going to do something different on 2 consoles unless they charge a lot more for the DRM free version.

I find the situation very odd. It's the publishers that are pushing for this, and will control it for the Xbox. Those same publishers also develop PS4 games. Are they just going to charge extra for the PS4 games without DRM? Did they change their minds and not tell MSFT? Did Sony lie to them?
|38 weeks 5 days ago||Emulating the Cell processor||
Emulating the Cell processor would be very difficult/annoying/expensive to do. PS2 is feasible, but people will pay to buy the IP again, so it's not worth the headache.

Saying he paid a recruit is unfair. He lent Alex Radejovic's family money to pay for funeral expenses for the father who died in war torn Yugoslavia. This was after he was ruled inelgible to play in college.
O'Brien claimed Ohio State improperly fired him and sued the university for $3.5 million in lost wages and benefits. O'Brien argued his loan did not violate NCAA bylaws because he knew Radojevic already had lost his amateur status by playing for money overseas. At trial, Geiger, NCAA lead investigator Steve Duffin both testified that O'Brien made the loan for humanitarian reasons, not as an inducement to get Radojevic to sign with Ohio State. NCAA infractions committee chairman David Swank testified that O'Brien's actions did not violate NCAA rules. A judge found Ohio State had breached the contract and awarded O'Brien $2.4 million. The award was upheld on appeal to the Ohio Court of Appeals and Ohio Supreme Court.

Jim O'Brien was a lazy and poor recruiter.
I don't really understand your argument. If you're a good recruiter, you cheat. If you're a bad recruiter, you suck?
Matta has gotten some, but certainly not all, of the good talent in Ohio. He has also gotten some of the talent in Indiana while Indiana basketball was a mess.
Are you suspicious of Hoke because he quickly came in and recruited at a higher level than RichRod?

I think Mat makes some interesting points. I do think the "tide" of the recruiting rivalry is still somewhat up in the air. I think this year will be interesting for a few reasons:
|1 year 3 weeks ago||I hate this "we recruit||
I hate this "we recruit character" argument. You have no idea what type of kids these players will be and most of the recruits had offers from both OSU and Michigan. It just sounds like the MSU "we don't need higher ranked recruits because we develop them better" argument.
Michigan fans think their recruits have higher character, while OSU fans think a lot of Michigan recruits are dicks. Either way, it's silly.
|1 year 3 weeks ago||I think people have been||
I think people have been underestimating how hard Kerry Coombs has been recruiting Michigan. I don't ever remember OSU focusing this much on Michigan prospects. As someone else said, this is probably bad news for State, but it's obviously something Hoke will have to pay attention to.
|1 year 4 weeks ago||Not really. Except for maybe||
Not really. Except for maybe Northwestern, they all follow the minimum NCAA guidelines. Some schools, like OSU and Michigan will take fewer academic risks because they can get away with it. For example, Minnesota, especially under Mason, took plenty of borderline academic players.

I assume they're not just "hating". I don't see the problem with one recruiting site having a different opinion than the others. What's the point of having a site if you're just going to copy ratings from Scout and Rivals?

Whenever Craft tries to do too much, he starts to suck.

As you said, I have to think it's more "focus" than actual management.
The same management results in a great basketball conference for the Big Ten and a shitty one for the SEC. That's despite the population shift and the perceived poor athletic department management. The same Minnesota that went cheap with the Tim Brewsters of the world, give Tubby (and anything to do with hockey) a shitload of money.
#3 shouldn't be discounted either. That's a ton of experience and practice time kids in the south are getting that kids up north don't get.

"about mid-Tuesday he started humming that ball like Peyton Manning.

Does only the USC offense use steroids because their QBs and WRs always suck in the pros but they have decenf defensive players?

that's not at all unusual (good college players not getting drafted high), and it's certainly not good evidence for the argument you're trying to make. Heyward is a rookie and he's been playing. Doesn't really seem like someone on roids anymore than any other player you could name.

One of the problem with these studies is that capital expenditures (stadium improvements, scoreboards, practice facilities) get accounted for differently depending on the school.

Which brings up an interesting point. In baseball, the pythagereon therom becomes less accurate for teams with exceptional bullpens. I've never heard an OSU fan talk about it.
I think a lot of what drives Michigan fans to talk about this is the "Our schedule is harder than the rest of the division" argument. OSU fans don't really care. Their division sucks and they're not concerned that Wisconsin and/or Penn State don't play Michigan.
This may or may not change the first time there are back to back OSU-Michigan games.

Having the easier division might help you get to the championship game, but if your goal is to make the new 4 team playoffs, it's going to hurt.
A one loss B1G champ OSU team could easily get shut out of the playoffs if, for example, Virginia Tech (future out of conference opponent) ended up being bad and OSU lost to one of Michigan or Wisconsin.

Get 2 extra, lose one... so everyone gets a net of one cupcake.
I don't think OSU fans are thrilled with a schedule of Indiana, Purdue, Rutgers, Maryland and Penn State.
If the other cross division game is a crappy one, OSU's schedule is basically Michigan, Wisconsin and whatever good out of conference team they're playing (unless that team ends up to be shitty, like Cal this year).
