It is a difficult and complicated subject. I actually think the mistake is to focus on paying athletes (lessen our guilt without doing right by them) rather than actually making their deal real (an education that recognizes their excellence at sports as A PART of their education).
Actually, I have little idea how this will ultimately affect the video game but a VERY rough guess. If I were counsel at Michigan, Duke, OSU, etc., I would still be advising that we stay away from a licensing deal with EA Sports. While this case may now die, there are more (Kessler's in particular) behind it. Many of these cases turn not just on the dry law but, as in public opinion, on the atmospherics.
The elite institutions make more than enough in other revenue sources. Why invite a very volitile and probably relatively minor one?
Great reminder that any team, any where can go down. (Perhaps we should have kept that fixed in mind after the admittedly disappointing (sigh) Penn State team.) Still some season to go with the tourneys and a #1 is definitely in play.
Just an aside... The moon is something like 225,000 MILES away. Meanwhile the number you listed is just over that in yards. Little matter for the real point but clarification please.
I'm gutted about the loss... I mean its Penn State. But these reactions are out of control. "I'm never watching Michigan again and I'm not a fan and I can't see us winning a game in the tournament and Beilein should probably quit/get fired/throw himself off a bridge..." Um these are our guys, remember?!? Our student athletes. They feel short but they are our boys.
I almost always "root" for our future opponents as I want them to have the strongest possible resume when we blow them out. It is a nice problem that we are so highly ranked now, one hardly has to think about it. We take care of business, business takes care of us. (Or something like that...)
I love the world in which Michigan basketball can respectfully tell a top 100 prospect and potential Mr. Basketball what he has to do to earn a scholarship.

Well, obviuosly congratulations. Lovely looking family and wish you every blessing. Now if I am correct, this young star will obviously be the crown jewel of our 2030 recruiting class but will be a member of the UofM class of 2034. (Obviously, the impressive bit is being a three year starter, captian of the team while graduating with top marks in Astrochemistry.)
Inspired by your message for my first post. Just wanted to add a huge congratulations on your acceptance to Michigan. There is, to borrow, no finer University in any aspect anywhere. (Ok, I don't want to hear any reasoned arguments about MICU/Har-Yale's Program in endro-astro-socio-theory...you get the emotional point of the claim.)
A quick thought. More years ago than I care to admit, Princeton was my first choice before I went to Michigan. Of course, we know it is easy to rationalize but looking back I feel endlessly grateful that I graduated from Michigan. I have been fortunate, life has treated me well... You have the rest of your life (and the opportunity) to attend the most elite and often private institutions. I had the chance after Michigan and am grateful that I have... but I will always be glad that my ALMA MATER is Michigan. It is a school of which I am am forever proud as a great (tremendous) academic institution, while still being able to be proud of it being a public school (and all that stands for) and still be able to speak endlessly about football with strangers I bumb into in an airport while traveling.

The Court already declined to hear the case though there are related cases in the pipeline
