...says Denzel Valentine of Big Ten Tourney favorite MSU, which is 5-7 in its last 12 games. Cumong, man.

The Big Ten format should provide the outright conference champion with one bye for each game the champion won the title by. For instance, if you win the league by one game, you get a first-round bye. Win by two games, and you advance directly to the semifinals. Win by three or more games, go straight to the final.
Then again, this might not work every year. Maybe they should just test it out for 2014 and then decide next year whether to keep it.

Yes -- it was a tip-in at one of the preseason tournaments in Hawaii. Good call.

I don't know that it was technically a "buzzer beater," but I rememeber Jimmy King hitting a 3 on M's final possession to beat Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye in 1994, after M had trailed pretty much the entire game. It was kind of similar to tonight's game in that it seemed throughout that Iowa was destined to win--and then, right at the end, bam!

Under Title VII and, I believe, Title VIII as well, all complaints must be investigated and the investigation must take place within 100 days of receipt -- is the rule the same for Title IX?

I predict that Della Valle will win the game with a shot at the buzzer--into his own basket.

Just give him the medical license right now. Just give it to him.

I don't know about that. I'm just rooting for Wisconsin because they are playing Ohio State.

Now he looks hilarious shooting too.

He's a great shooter, but he looks hilarious trying to do anything else.

That was ridiculous.
"The official was way far from the play!" Meanwhile the replay clearly shows Craft raking his arm across the Wisconsin player's head.

That NIT run in 2004 was one of the most fun experiences I've had as a sports fan. The NIT games were all general admission so I think I was in the first few rows for every one of those games, plus we beat State that year. But, yeah, what we have going on now is much, much better.

Magnus, I am not sure I understand your point. It may be the case that QBs usually commit early, but Rosen hasn't committed anywhere yet--so I am not sure how the lack of an early committment disadvantages one school vs. another. Are you saying that Michigan QBs usually commit early? Or are you saying that it's already too late in the process for Michigan, and that he's likely to choose among schools he's already been considering for a long time?

I have an unforgettable memory of Clarence Thompson blitzing off the corner and nailing Purdue's QB in the end zone for a safety in the 5-0 ice bowl of 1996.

I'm still too demoralized to think about actual football, but am logging in anyway to express my appreciation for the Radiohead reference. This avatar comes with responsibilities.

Because nobody wears #1 anymore, and the longer the number remains unused, the higher the criteria seem to get.

Sark has actually been recruiting pretty well--including signing a number of former Michigan targets (Shaq Thompson, Sean Parker, and Demorea Stringfellow, for instance). 8-4 may not sound all that impressive, but the team went 0-12 the year before Sarkisian arrived and they play in the same division as Stanford and Oregon.

A couple years ago I tried to start a deep analysis blog for the Washington Huskies, since they really don't have anything approaching mgoblog in quality. I gave up after a couple months because it wasn't catching on and I just didn't have the time to devote to it,. But. I did try to do a UFR-lite type thing for just the first couple drives of each game, and it took hours. Just the process of watching and re-watching plays repeatedly to figure out (i) what the offensive and defensive formations and play-calls are; (ii) what each player's assignment appears to be, based on the play, and (iii) how good a job each guy did of executing that assignment is ridiculously laborious and and difficult. But Brian goes even futher and tries to figure out what guys should have done, assesses the play calls themselves for the RPS metric, charts everything with video clips--plus a pretty extended discussion after each game chart. It's really incredible that he's able to put all of this together, week-after-week, and with the consistent quality.

The piped-in music is probably the main reason I hardly go to sporting events anymore. I canceled my Seattle Sounders season tickets because of it. It's just not fun when you can't converse with the people beside you.
|17 weeks 5 days ago||Offenses||
Just from the eye test, I think it's pretty hard to imagine a worse offense than what we had in 2008. This team is nowhere close to that one, so I think we are well above "historical levels" of futility. The 2001 offense was also pretty awful.

English's remark about not wanting kids from female-headed households always bothered me, especially at a place like EMU where you can expect to be recruiting a lot players from poor urban neighborhoods. I guess I would have a lot more sympathy for English if I felt like he was giving chances to a lot of hard-luck kids, since you're not going to win much at EMU anwyay. But ever since that remark I've basically been like "to hell with Ron English."
|17 weeks 6 days ago||Hoke||
It's not unrealistic to expect coaches to tweak their schemes to fit personnel. But in college football, unlike the NFL examples you gave above, teams need to recruit, and if you don't settle on a particular type of offense and recruit players who fit that system, you're always going to be in the kind of hybrid limbo that Michigan has been in for 2+ seasons now.
I personally thought Hoke should have hired a spread OC and kept the core of Rich Rod's offense intact. He didn't, and now we are suffering through the transition cost that occurs when you have veteran players who don't fit your scheme (2012) and young players who fit the scheme but aren't ready for prime time (2013). We probably have to just have to accept the situation for what it is and wait it out.
|17 weeks 6 days ago||Stanford-Oregon||
Well, if Stanford doesn't get a FG blocked and returned for a TD and then fail to recover an onside kick, the final score is 29-7.
Regardless of what the point total was, the game felt like a beatdown because Stanford controlled the ball and physically dominated Oregon. I don't personally care for the manball approach, but last night's game was a good argument in favor of it.
