You know, it is possible to believe that Hoke is a mediocre coach without having to find some way of characterizing every single thing he does as bad, incompetent, etc.

Looks like it's a good thing you at least won't be in the Ozarks.
|12 hours 31 min ago||Utah||
I watched some of Utah's game against Idaho State. Though ISU is a bad FCS team with tiny players, they repeatedly gashed Utah up the middle on inside zone plays in the early going and had some success throwing the ball to TEs and slot receivers against Utah's LBs.
the strength of Utah's defense is a bad-ass pass rusher by the name of Nate Orchard; he was constantly in the backfield and killed several drives himself, either with sacks & TFLs or by blowing up plays that his teammates cleaned-up after. He'll be a big challenge for Cole on the edge--but if M can contain Orchard (and that's a big if), the rest of Utah's D isn't really all that impressive.
|14 hours 59 min ago||Bradshaw||
I always used to hear that Terry Bradshaw was remarkably stupid. He doesn't really come across that way on his NFL pregame show, but that could just mean he can read a teleprompter. I've been acquainted with some local TV news anchors and they aren't the sharpest knives either.
Wow. I see I have written a truly asinine comment. But I guess I will post it anyway; it seems to belong on a thread devoted to Jameis Winston shouting vulgarities from a tabletop in a college student union.

I'd be more impressed if he'd done this in a west end town.

I think one of the real barriers to replacing Hoke is that there really isn't a clear candidate out there who I'd really want this season. Our best bet would probably either be a failed NFL guy or else whoever this year's hot up-and-coming coordinator is. Nussmeier would just be awkward.
Even if Hoke isn't going to win big, at least he can recruit; the roster should be in good shape if a change does need to be made. With that in mind, I'd rather see us hold onto Hoke unless and until we're sure we can get an upgrade. If that means keeping him after another disappointing season, well,I still think that's better than firing him out of frustration and having to take our chances with whoever might be available.

Out of those choices, Section 41 is going to give you the best view of the field--though what row you are in can also make a big difference. The student section is definitely a different experience than the rest of the stadium; I was personally over that by around age 25 but to each his own. Have fun!

I thought that rule was only applicable to fumble recoveries--not all turnovers?

I haven't seen Utah play this season, but from what I've read about them Utah could well be a good team. They had a lousy record last season, but played a brutal schedule and lost a number of very close games after suffering a number of key injuries. Utah did upset Stanford, so they at least showed the ability to close the deal on one occasion. Anyway, they are supposedly improved this year and will be healthy when M gets them, so Utah should be a solid opponent.

Say all you want on a posting board, just don't boo the team if you're at the game. It's embarrassing and sends a terrible message to the players and potential recruits.

There was still about 1:00 remaining when M lined up for the 4th down. Had we converted, the ball would have been inside the +35 yard line with at least a momentary clock stoppage to move the chains. Part of what made the delay of game gaffe so frustrating was that there was adequate time to score a TD or move into chip-shot FG range, so I don't really have a problem with the clock management leading up to that point.

Two consecutive sacks to stop Penn State in the red zone again. 10-3 Rutgers now.

Marijuana itself may not be very dangerous, but it is the gateway to much more damaging substances like Oreos and Taco Bell.
|1 week 1 day ago||Preparation||
As Nussmeier said, M started the game off with two sustained drives that bogged down in Irish territory and ended with missed FGs. So, I don't find it manifestly impossible that the team was well-prepared. It seemed to me that the team didn't respond well to adversity-- i.e. their performance decreased markedly after the missed FGs, PI flags, ND's conversion on 4th down, etc. The players could have had a great week of practice and "prepared" well, but then come unglued as they started to get behind on the scoreboard.

Great info from RaisedGoBlue. Here's hoping for more posts from him.

I think Michigan is unlikely to win the conference with both MSU and OSU on the road. But it would be pretty damn terrific if it happened. Yeah, our team is not a national championship contender. But a conference title is nothing to sneeze at.
|1 week 3 days ago||Hoke CEO||
This is the concern I have.
I was not a fan of the Hoke hire at the outset, but he impressed me with his strong recruiting and by bringing in Mattison. I thought Borges was better than most people gave him credit for, and when Nussmeier was hired this off season I started to think, "okay, this can work--Hoke just acts like the face of the team and does his bit about being a family and toughness and whatnot, while we have ace coordinators who handle the Xs & Os."
One game is not enough to persuade me that the model is doomed to failure--though if one game could do that, last night's is a damn good candidate.
|1 week 3 days ago||Officials||
I thought both PI calls on Lewis were questionable--especially the second one in the end zone. The reviewed play where the ND receiver had his toe on the line was ridiculous, though that play didn't really have much of an effect. Similarly, I thought Gardner's arm was clearly moving forward on the play that was ruled a fumble, and should have been ruled an incomplete pass on review. I also thought the roughing all on Ryan was ticky-tack, but probably correct.
I can't think of a single close call that didn't go ND's way.
I don't think anybody is seriously arguing that the officiating was the difference, but that if we are looking for reasons why the final score was 31-0 instead of something a little more palatable, I think this warrants consideration.
|1 week 3 days ago||Game||
This wasn't like a 2010 game where we had coverage busts all over the place and clueless freshman running everywhere. We had guys in position, but just couldn't make the plays when it counted. I think the people calling for coaches to be fired are just reacting to the score, rather than any specific thing the coaches did wrong (hence all the comments about headsets and whatnot).
I do think the team seemed to be mentally defeated pretty early on in the game--probably between the missed FGs, the PI flags, Taylor going down, and all the other breaks that went against us. But the biggest problem seemed to be that our offensive linemen were just too young and ineffective, while ND's veteran o-line was outstanding. There isn't much you can do when you are getting dominated at the LOS--but still, had a couple of those breaks gone our way maybe we lose something like 24-10 and people aren't quite so upset.

"This is college football and it's a shame this game is coming to an end."
|1 week 4 days ago||Chop block||
I think that's a bad call. The lineman wasn't "engaged" with the defender before the back came in low.
|1 week 4 days ago||Big 10||
From about the early-ish nineties until the late 2000s, the Big Ten was pretty solid: Michigan, OSU, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Purdue were all pretty good most years, plus teams like Northwestern, Illinois, and Minnesota would occasionally rise up. So it hasn't always been this bad.

Ball State and Iowa are setting football back at least 30 years.
