I was originally thinking I could do updates about 1-2 times per month, but will try to do it weekly.  Also, thanks for reminding me about my avatar.  I've been meaning to update it with a Brandon-approved M.

1 day 6 hours ago Tyrone Noble

I somehow have no memory of Tyrone Noble, even though I was at M when he played.  But the other day I was watching Wolverine Historian's Youtube of the 1994 ND game, and remember seeing Noble a couple times after making tackles.  Thing is, from just seeing him I thought he was a LB!  Different game back then.

1 day 6 hours ago Recruiting

Is there any real evidence that playing a road game someplace really improves your chances of pulling recruits from there?  I know this is something coaches talk about, but to me it just seems like a relic of the old days when most games were only regionally-televised (if at all) and it was hard to really get exposure to teams outside your area.

1 day 12 hours ago Freshmen corners

Woodson started as a freshman in 1995, even though he played RB in high school and was recruited as a WR.  I don't know specifically who else was on the roster that year for corners, but I'm pretty sure he had to beat out at least one or two decent veterans--though, probably not multi-year starters (as Countess & Taylor will be in 2014).

1 day 13 hours ago DMs

Oh, that's right.  My bad.  Sorry, Polska.

1 day 13 hours ago Showboating

I don't have a problem with the "showboating" or whatever you want to call it, but then again, I do come from the "if you don't like it, stop them" camp.

1 day 13 hours ago Peppers

Well, this may be nit-picking, but Peppers hasn't yet proven that he can shapeshift into a bear, eagle, or other North American fauna.

1 day 13 hours ago Odd spellings

I don't think he's Canadian.  Look at the way he spelled "pieces."  He's clearly a Namibian spy.

1 day 13 hours ago Paladins

Wait--aren't you the guy who doesn't know what a dungeonmaster is?  You can't truly appreciate a name like "Paladins" if you don't know what a dungeonmaster is.

1 day 14 hours ago Reggie Bush

Wow; add me to the "I watched the video and he reminded me of Reggie Bush" contingent. Maybe Peppers actually is Reggie Bush and he's doing a Leon Sandcastle thing?

2 days 6 hours ago Borges Interview

Part I was awesome.  Part II was awesomer.  So there really does need to be a Part III.

2 days 13 hours ago Nebraska recruiting

Huh.  From about 18 to about 24 does seem like a pretty significant drop to me, but it might be a lot smaller than I realize.  I imagine the margins between recruiting classes tend to get smaller as you go further down the rankings, so, the difference between the #18 class and the #24 class is probably a lot smaller than, say, the difference between the #3 class and the #9 class.

2 days 13 hours ago Socks

I fully agree.  I live in Seattle, and can get good wool socks up here.  And you can get decent, not great, dress socks at most department stores.  But I usually have to travel to LA if I want to get a good caual sock for the warm weather months.

3 days 12 min ago CW

Because he's Charles fucking Woodson, that's why Lions fans want him.

3 days 4 hours ago Bin Laden

I think he would throw the bomb.

3 days 4 hours ago Kayfabe

I have to +1 you for enhancing my vocabulary.  I had literally never heard of the term "kayfabe" until your post.  But I looked it up, and it makes perfect sense.

3 days 4 hours ago Sports

I kind of like all the teams.

3 days 14 hours ago Nebraska

Did Nebraska recruit more successfully in the pre-Solich-firing era, or did their recruiting linger around the #25 mark even then? I know Nebraska has always been famous for its great walk-ons, but those teams also featured lots of elite talent--especially on defense and in the offensive backfield.

4 days 6 hours ago Shaw

Well, he did land Josh Garnett, so presumably he would take it in stride.

4 days 7 hours ago Virginia

This does seem like an exceptional year for talent in Virginia, though.  Hand, Brown, Blanding--plus Green last year, and those are just the guys I know off the top of my head. I know UVA is an up-and-coming program, but I still doubt they would be in on so many guys like this if they were from, say, Kansas.

4 days 9 hours ago Browns

Just as long as it's not "Doo-Doo Brown."

4 days 12 hours ago Brown

I hear he is now going by Andrew "JuJu" Brown.

4 days 13 hours ago Great Diary

What stands out to me are how the lines for Ohio St. and Michigan track each other almost perfectly since 2006, with us unfortunately just a step behind.  Stupid fluke personal foul penalty.  EDIT: actually, I looked again and it's 2008 when the M and OSU lines start to track each other, after M's preciptous dip in the 2007 recruiting class.  Stupid late Carr-era recruiting woes.

I also find it noteworthy that Nebraska posted its best recruiting average in 2011--the year they joined the B1G--and have two consecutive declining years with another slow start in 2014.  I wonder if their historical norm will start looking more like Iowa's or Wisconsin's?

Holy fluctuation, Penn State.

5 days 23 hours ago IM Reffing

I also was an IM ref at Michigan in the '90s.  It was interesting, because I had played two or three years of IM sports and constantly complained about the bad officiating--and then I became an IM ref myself and understood it from the other side.  But I was a pretty damn awful referree.  A couple of my favorite memories:

  • In my very first game, the offensive team threw "the bomb" on the first play from scrimmage.  The receiver went up and made a circus catch.  I got caught up in the excitement of the play and raised my arms to signal "touchdown" as soon as I verified that he had possession of the ball and his feet were in-bounds. Only problem?  He landed at about the 5 yard-line.  The defensive team was pissed, but as the guy working the game with me said, "eh, they would have scored anyway."
  • In the first game I officiated solo, it was a shoot-out, with the offenses marching up and down the field.  Each team had scored several touchdowns, and probably the only thing separating them score-wise were the PAT conversions.  So, at halftime, one of the coaches walks up to me and asks, "hey ref, what's the score?"  It was only then that I realized I was responsible for keeping score of the game.  I had no clue what the score really was, so I just made something up.
  • In the sorority league games, most teams wouldn't have a girl who could throw the ball more than five or ten yards.  Since they couldn't pass, and since there was really no run-blocking, most of the sororities would run these extremely complicated deception plays--multiple reverses, fakes, handoffs, etc.  Usually I was pretty good about keeping track of where the ball was.  But in the one game, which was ties 0-0 late in the second half, with pretty much the entire game having been played within about the same 15-yard stretch of the field, I blew a play dead after the defense pulled the flag of the girl I thought had the ball--only to see the girl who actually had the ball streaking down the opposite sideline with no defenders anywhere in sight.   You know those Southwest "wanna get away?" commercials...
