I totally get what you're both saying, but I just wasn't interested in living out in some exurrb or having a long commute from the Eastbay. It's worth it for some people, but not for me. Plus, i suppose it's all relative; if I didn't already have such a good thing going on in Seattle, I'd likely have been much more willing to make sacrifices.
I don't know if I could ever live in SoCal at all. I love visiting there, but the drive times really are brutal.

Thanks for the explanation.

I don't follow. You're saying a guy who played & coaches at Texas Tech rode the coattails of a guy who played at Texas A&M?

I love California. But I had an opportunity to move to the Bay Area this past spring and ultimately decided to turn it down. Even coming from Seattle, which is hella expensive in its own right, we just wouldn't have been able to make it work with the cost of living down there. For me, the whole point of living in a place like SF is having access to all the great restaurants, music venues, museums, etc., as well as living in a walkable neighborhood with a true feeling of community. I have all that in Seattle; for a comparable situation in the Bay Area we'd be looking at probably $5K+ per month in rent (with dim prospects of actually being able to buy). With those kinds of economics, you are going to get a weird mix of people with a huge level of stress thrown in. But I still love CA!

XtraMelanin, have you ever read "Ecology of Fear" by Mike Davis? I only ask because, based on your last comment, I think you would enjoy it.

Dammit. That guy with the crinkled pantlegs from digging dirty pairs out from the hamper and wearing them... I am EGD, and I have a Dad Pants problem.

Greeks for Life is basing far too much of his world view on Beverly Hills 90210 episodes.
|15 hours 3 min ago||Assistants||
That's a very strong point. I don't think I've ever known of a successful football coach who wasn't fiercely protective of his assistants (or putative assistants).

This coach hire is unique in the length of time the parties have needed to keep it quiet--probably because college teams usually aren't in the position of hiring NFL guys from teams with playoff chances in December. Most coaching hires take a few days or at most a couple weeks, which really limits the opportunity for little anecdotes like this one to occur and then leak out into the public domain.
|1 day 14 hours ago||I really don't see that as||
I really don't see that as much of a risk. Harbaugh is worth a ton to Michigan because he's probably the only rock star coach we have a legitimate chance of hiring. But an NFL franchise doesn't have to pay $8+ million to get a top coach. Why would the Raiders offer Harbaugh $10-12 million when there are plenty of other good candidates they could sign for half that?
|1 day 14 hours ago||I agree that confirmation||
I agree that confirmation bias is insidious and good thinkers must constantly guard against it. But what information has come out recently to cast any genuine doubt on JH-to-M? A couple of NFL pundits claiming Harbaugh would never leave the League isn't really evidence. The thing about John Harbaugh denying that the relatives were pushing Jim to A2 is really the closest to a negative--and that wasn't even really negative.

In other words, Durkin might hesitate to take a defensive coordinator job with a program that signs 18.6 wide receivers per recruiting cycle?

You don't think 30 year old veterans would be up for foot wrestling?
|4 days 11 hours ago||Hoke||
Probably because there was no risk of some NFL franchise swooping in at the last minute and offering Hoke $50+ million and total personnel control.
|4 days 18 hours ago||For serious. If Harbaugh||
For serious. If Harbaugh does take the job, he's then going to need to hire a staff and fill a recruiting class over about a six or seven week period. Just try and pry yourself away from that!

I was on a conference call a few weeks ago with over 200 people. It's not a problem so long as it's managed well.

|5 days 14 hours ago||NFL Coordinators||
The plan B guy I've liked from the beginning is an NFL coordinator, Dan Quinn from Seattle. But from the looks of things, he won't be available until well into January--the conference championship games are Jan. 18, and the Super Bowl is Feb. 1. Ditto for guys like Jack Del Rio or Josh McDaniels--the Seahawks, Broncos, and Patriots are all having good years, look strong heading into the playoffs, and already have or likely will have first-round byes.
I suppose there is Greg Roman; that would be weird.

I think he's too young for the high school punishments. For junior high I think we just take away his Pokemon cards or something.

Nussmeier is proven OC who I think would eventually succeed at Michigan if retained. The criticisms ("Michigan's offense was bad in 2014 , therefore Nussmeier is bad") are overly simplistic and unconvincing. I'd like to see us keep him if possible, but if the new HC is Harbaugh or another coach from the offensive side of the ball then I think it's more likely the new HC will want to bring in his own offensive staff.
