The Athletic is worth every

The Athletic is worth every penny.  Their content, authors, no ads.  Much better than the general cliche writing at local DET newspaper websites.

I believe they covered most

I believe they covered most of the players already on a previous pod with Steve?  Could be wrong...

Great thread

Spend your energy worrying about better things

That's just the type of grass that makes it look worse.  Some of it is dormant, overseeded with different grass that comes in earlier.

You're right

My bad.  It was Harris that said that..carry on

Weber talked to TomVH

Weber talked to TomVH yesterday and said that if Harbaugh comes calling and asks him to switch back, he would 'respectfully decline'

Holy hands

They big

Jibreel Black

Frank Clark is a fine choice, but Jibreel Black played an outstanding 2nd half.  Forced the fumble that Clark picked up..a couple of sacks/pressures..Granted one was just a break down in the blocking scheme by Penn St.  But I'm going to guess, based on UFR, that he was the best player on the field for Michigan Sat.

Maybe I'm wrong..

2s play in Dayton, Philly, Lexington, KC?

edit:  Nevermind, I see the seeds aren't locked into cities

Agreed with the 2 or 3 seed..

Not much difference.  Almost would rather see them be a 3 seed, so they play in Auburn Hills?  Well, a 50% chance of that, if a 3 seed.

And teams like UCLA and VCU as 6 seeds do not worry me, as I've seen UCLA play numerous times and think they are thrash.  VCU, a team I believe you mentioned as someone dependent on turnovers.

No, it doesn't

What it means is MIchigan needs to spend tomorrow and wednesday fixing the pick and roll defense.  They have today off.  I like the hedging, but the book is out with how to attack.  Thank god they have this 'mini-camp' to address the rotations.

With the 1-3-1, Penn St found those 2 wide open corner 3s that kept the game from going into 10+ territory.  Sure, Vogrich had an error.  But to run 1-3-1 half the game is not a long term solution.

You don't see it?

It says 'swag'

Ugh..

I agree with that second half of Illinois and Michigan St.  How many 2nd half fouls did (or did they?) Illinois commit?  I really don't remember many Mich St possesions where a foul wasn't committed.

A little worrisome after watching last weeks Illinois second half vs Michigan.  The refs were calling a lot of the hard hedges on McGary and Horford (some legit).  Bielfeldt's (if needed ) foot speed vs Zeller is an obvious concern.

Hardaway

The one area Hardaway Jr still needs improvement is the handle.  I don't know if it is an easy fix, but there seems to be a common attack on the ball when he starts to dribble.  Either he is showing the ball to the defender too much or is just not a very good handler or his awareness of defenders around him are below average?

Most and Least Variable

You mention: "You can't guarantee success with folks as variable as OL"

What has the most variability and least on offense?  Curious, because I don't know.

The kid likes talking about himself..

Lots of starting the sentence off with 'I'.  Actually, every sentence starts with 'I'.  Sounds like a great kid.  May need to work on his writing skills, though.

Nothing on campus

There's nothing on campus to see.  Brathaus is the local bar I used to go quite often.  Really a dive bar.

Trotters

Lived in BG for the first 23 years.  If you have't been to Trotters, you're really missing out.  5-10 min drive from the Ice Arena.

All you need to get there is the Brown Jug.  Steak.  It's located downtown on the west side of Main St., just north of Wooster.  Tiny place, been there for as long as I remember (born in 73).

If you go to places like Jed's or SamBs, you're doing it wrong.  Also, avoid the places you will see after you exit I-75.

If you do want pizza, Myles or Pollyeyes are the places to go.

Cespedes

Cespedes wasn't going to leadoff anyway.  Though you are correct that Jackson in the #1 hole is scary.  He's a bottom 3rd of the lineup hitter until he cuts down on the Ks and increases his on-base skills.

Doesn't make sense

That doesn't really make sense.  Kosuke is a totally different player.  Doesn't have the power Cespedes has.  Fukudome is a contact, on-base player.  Cepedes is a big swing, big power, big strikeouts type of hitter.

Actually

The word is that he wanted to be a free agent in 4 years and the Marlins wanted him to sign to a 6 year deal.  The money amount was the same (36 million).

Mystery Guy

Is the #mysteryguy the same as #mysteryteam?  Because we all know the mystery team wins (Pujols, Fielder).  Very Jon Heyman of you, Brian.

Add on to the Groping

Brian, curious to see your UFR opinion on the Denard INT in Koger's direction.  If you want to put some blame on the INT, Koger needs to be credited for at least half.  He ran the route beyond the first down line (which is fine).  But as Denard released the ball, you will see him basically continuing his route towards the direction of the end zone.

The goal of that play was to move the sticks, not see if he can break it for long yardage.  Obviously, that would be fine too.  But what he should have done is use his body to box out the trailing LB.  Or at least come back to the ball.  -.5 to Koger, in my opinion.

Don't forget

I believe Russell Shaw went the JC route before Michigan

Garrard not an option

He is having back surgery to repair disc issue

This:

"They played zero coverage on Roy Roundtree and he went for whatever that was for a touchdown on a slant. If we run a couple more slant routes maybe more pure or better, and we may have had another one.”

Brian touched on it earlier today, but some of the plays/routes where the WRs were 20-30 yards from line of scrimmage didn't make sense, especially with the weather conditions.  Needed to have more hot routes to exploit the CB and LB blitzes.

“No. I liked the play. If we execute the play, Koger’s in the endzone. We don’t make a block that we need to make, and that’s part of it."

That one was on Brandon Moore.

Craig Roh

With an edge rush strip of the ball deep in Spartan territory.  Whether that sets up the winning score or prevents MSU from driving down the field late in the game.

Some of these questions...

Jeez.  "You’re playing them a little later in the year than you have in the past. Does that extra couple weeks of cushion make a difference in preparation?"

If that person asking the question would do some research, this year's games are about in the middle of when they usually play.

Is it better to play rivals at the beginning of the year or the end of the year?

Huh?  A strange question.

Honest question

Very minor issue/question here.  Does Denard play it safe and wait for Hopkins to turn his head to the LOS before throwing it or should he throw it sooner?  Hopkins turns his head at around the 27 yard mark, the ball isn't released until he reaches the 31.  Just thinking the sooner it gets to Stephen, the more he can possibly gain with YAC.

Is Brian getting grey hair?

Or is it the pixels?  And is it gray or grey?  And why do I care if Brian has gray or grey or hair?

Well, that's silly

That's a silly statement by whomever that person is.  Obviously, it would be nice to NOT see Denard get hurt, forcing him to leave the game for a period of time, but this is the backup QB.  For 2011 the coaching staff HAS to be happy to have Devin as the backup.  The guy can speculate all he wants, but he loses creditibilty from me.

Nobody cares about how good or..

Just FYI, nobody really cares about the good or bad luck of your fantasy football team.  Just sayin.  It's similar to the people who complain about the bad beat in poker.

Will continue until

Unfortunately, unless Roh and Black can find a way to pressure the QB, the blitz seems to be the only way to pressure the QB into hurried throws/mistakes.

3, 4, 5, does it really matter?

I really wish this whole star system goes away at some point.  Obviously, it doesn't really matter what the kid gets.  Seems like the kid has decent straight line speed.

The best

Thanks for that.  Been on a SRV kick lately.

I don't think that is correct

That info seems to be spreading quickly.  Sure wasn't shown in Back to the Future I:

http://vimeo.com/13099195

Thank you

"or his highlight tape might not be sped up like many are"

Thank you. It seems so obvious to me that so many highlight tapes have been sped up. Maybe there needs to be a 'Fake Video speed' out of 5 on commit videos.

I agree

I agree with what you are saying. What I think what occurred is that these were the ratings before the 09 season. I may be wrong and that rating was low to begin with, if true. I just think they don't have a good system set up to update the player ratings until after the season, bowl games, etc..

No doubt Novak

No doubt Novak is quite an important piece of the team, emotionally and when he hits 3s and overachieves defensively. But for a team that wants to be part of the NCAA, Novak being the 3rd most important player on the team is not good. I want Novak to be what he is, an important role player. He's just too streaky (right now) to be considered the 3rd most important player. I want consistent points from someone, damn it.

I kind of have

a feeling he'll be back next year also. Obviously no other reason than a guess. There's still a few areas that he needs to work on (in my opinion):

More consistent outside shot (range)
Strength when finishing. He's quite impressive at getting to the basket, just needs to finish stronger to gather more 3 pt play opportunities.

Whether or not that matters to him, may think his game could improve more outside of Beilein.

Yes, but

if I remember right, the field conditions had to be tough for OLmen to get leverage that day. He did most of his damage on Schilling that day, obviously playing out of position at RT.

Like Woodley

I think that is one reason BG is a valuable. He can be drafted as either a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB. A matter of fact, I could see the Packers select BG to compliment Clay Matthews. Of course, they need OL help also. I'm not even a Packer fan. But GB, NE, the Ravens (like you said) and even the Jets could use BG as a OLB.

Personally, I'd love the Steelers grab him to play opposite of Woodley. But with Harrison there and much more needs (CB, OL, DL, S), it doesn't make much sense for Pitt. to draft him early.

I'm asking

I'm comparing to the national average. And I'm not just talking about the red line. Which, if you know, has some relatively bad areas north of Wrigley, towards the Howard stop.

I've moved from Chicago in December of 06. So maybe I'm off base and can't back up what has improved since the beginning of 07.

But a quick google stalk of dated data (I think 2005) on crimes near El Stations.

"Earlier research found that in Chicago neighborhoods with relatively little crime, robberies were concentrated in the first two or three blocks away from rapid transit stations and peaked at about 1.5 blocks from the station. In neighborhoods with many robberies, distance from a rapid transit station was unrelated to number of street robberies."

http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p_mla_apa_research_citation/0/3/2/2/9/p…

And based off demographic info, Wrigleyville (60657, 60613) has a high rate of robberies. So maybe the distance from the stop doesn't matter.

http://homes.point2.com/Neighborhood/US/Illinois/Cook-County/Chicago/La…

I don't know. Maybe I'm over reacting and maybe remember the multiple attacks and rapes of women near Wrigley a few years back. I'm willing to admit I'm wrong.

Wrigley is not

It's not in the middle of middle to upper class. You realize that Uptown is located right next to Wrigley? And I definitely wouldn't call it safe. Any time you have the Red Line (or any CTA stop), you have trouble.

Umm, best fanbase?

Define best fanbase? Based on attendance when the team is poor?

I lived in Chicago (wrigleyville and ravenswood) for 7 years after college and went to at least 4 games per year. Half in the bleachers. I assume you realized it in 2008. Wrigley, and especially the bleachers, is an outdoor bar. A lot of the 'fans' don't know what is going on during the game. They are there to socialize and be part of the 'experience'.

Of course, there are always a percentage of fans that really get it and since Chicago is a big city, you'll probably see a greater number of them than Cleveland or Pittsburgh. Doesn't make them the best fanbase. I'm not sure you can really narrow down who the best fans are.
