my suggestions

if you need help getting fired up try:

1) drinking whiskey - before long youll get upset with a play that ONLY goes for 6 yards

2) listen to the MSU pregrame show - always pisses me off

3) yell at the tv - if you pretend they can hear you but are just ignoring you it works even better

4) drop copious amounts of pcp - you will be riled up for sure...for most likely 2-3 days

and most importantly,

5) its UM football - we only get 12-14 games a year so enjoy them to their fullest. GET F'ING PUMPED!

p.s. i read your post to myself in an eeyore voice. it was entertaining...and sad. dont be sad

UFR

Because you mentioned UFR, I was wondering if anyone else saw the article on MLive titled "Upon Furhter Review"...about some play in the MSU game. Coincidence or shenanigans?

http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2013/10/upon_further_review_bre…

this year

will be a small step back.  we have leadership and talent htat is progressing.  next year is hwen we will see a jump in expectations and hopefully performance.  in GRIII and Mitch stick around for 203 years UMBB has a chance to build a program that has not only top coaching but top talent. Mitch was a huge get and if he pans out (even one and done), it shows that UMBB can highlight topflight players and improve their stock which is huge in recruiting.  If UMBB can make the tourney this year it only helps the process but I feel like this season is just putting water in front of the dam and next year is when the dam breaks and the program starts to content annually for B1G titles

great stats

those numbers really paint the picture...and its not pretty.  its not so gross you want to rip it off the wall but you definitely hide it in the guest bedroom.  denard is an athlete that lines up at qb.  the proof is in his reads and his throws. ive run out of fingers and toes to count the number of long throws hes missed...by yards.  the wr might not always be open but halfway the time he doesnt even give the wr a chance to make a play.  and he doesnt check down hardly at all (latest exception being the koger pass out of the flat vs. iowa).

bottom line is that denard is what he is - a runner.  um needs to run him more. law of averages says you run him enough and hell break a big one.  that should help open up the passing game so he can make easy throws to open wr's.  i dont think you can play to not get him hurt - "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!" and i dont think you can play him in borges offense.  heres to him proving that statement wrong next year but its not gonna happen this fall.

coaching logic

pretty sure you never want to run a trick play or a variation of a trick play without attempthing something similar in a previous game.  you never know how its going to work out and you dont want to give good teams any help by turning it over on a trick play.  IMO the main purpose of these plays was to get the offense's feet wet with new formations and get other DCs thinking about WHATELSE we could run from these sets - not just the plays they ran (isn't there some quote about only 10% of an iceberg being above water - you get the idea; more too come...denard in the slot?).  probably havent seen more of these because they had to install a new offense and trick plays are generally the last thing you put in.  im excited to see whatelse AB has in his bag of tricks (if we start faking fields goals twice a game like another team i know im going to get upset tho).

avery on the secondary this year v. last

I liked that he started out saying "I feel..." then quickky corrected himself and said "we feel..." TIMO this illustrates one of the biggest changes in the entire team in that all of the players are in it together and play for each other. Not only does it help this team but i think recruits will come in and see the infectious attitude and want to be a part of it.  I hope the attitude stays the same if they lose a game

ill start getting excited

when Mcgary decides to cancel some of his other visits. UM would be silly not to send an army to recruitt his guy so the fact that they did just shows they want him and thin they can get him.  parents often times need as much recruiting as the player so smart move by coach B but also a necessary one.  you think he dropped a  "you know duke is tabacco road and tabacco is bad for you mmk"?

hahahaha

that is one of the best quotes ive heard in awhile (said while arguing with idiot roommate over proper use trashcans - as in trash goes in them and not on the ground next to them).

but annnnway, back to demens.  thats stats speak for themselves - you want your MLB to lead your team in tackles...and he is.  kind of reminds of david harris: he didn't make a ton of flashy plays and you didnt hear his name because he was doing his job.  obviously, demens is not on the level as DH but i think they play the same (or at least demens has thus far this year) in that they just go about making tackles and not letting the other team run it up the middle for 45 yards and a touchdown.  i think the bigger is is the LBs playing as a unit - doesn't do a ton of good if demens is in the right spot and the other LBs are getting sealed/blow out of the water.  it would be nice to see the playside LB plug a hole/take on a blocker and demens come through and clean up at the LOS.

i do like Pandemens!

Hoke the phone the Monday Presser

just had brady talking about his footwork so i think you are definitely right on that front.  its just weird to see such a regression in effectiveness from pass plays compared to last year.  AB is trying to make him into a better overall qb and thats hurting his game (short term only lets hope).

i think its speaks to RR's coaching: 1) his offense was pretty freaking sweet to mask these short comings in denard's throwing 2) he has no idea how to coach other than running his system and yelling at people.

i agree with playaction on 1st more and the dump offs - if they are incorporating some of the running plays that worked last year why not do the same with some of the passing plays (see: drew dileo td against emu)?  thanks for the input pburg

Denard's techniques?

The blurb from Smart Football talks about "the very techniques" Denard is using this year are new?  are they referring to his reads or did the coaching staff change his throwing motion/mechanics?  seems like he is getting plenty of juice of the ball and in most cases (when not throwing into double coverage) he is making decent reads.  IMO, to borrow baseball terminology, he is aiming his pitches rather than just throwing it and trusting his motion/reads.  this would appear to be a comfort thing and not a whole lot to do with technique.  or maybe he isn't stepping far enough with his front leg and thats why they are sailing on him (what caused me to lead the little league in wild picthes - or because i was aiming at kids' heads). anyway, yea, whats this technique business about?

the real question

the real question is.... if kyle turley isnt playing and he gets mad, whos helmut does he throw?

i bet when he opened his mouth every player on the um team was like "whos kyle turley and why is he so mad? is he sons of anarchy?"

kids, lets this be a lesson: being a maniacal douche and making shitty music dont mix.  friends dont let friends make tribute songs about winning a super bowl

nicely done

solid work. i think you should wait to make changes to the format until you have a full game tape to work with.  i like stubob's idea about matching up plays from UM and from video of their opponent - which would be made easier by having a full game to use instead of highlights.  maybe include a few more players in the way you did with ronnie hillman ("guys to watch" - you can come up with a better title im sure) or a unit that might guys UM trouble (O-Line, LBs, whatevs)  and include a couple from both side of the ball and special teams.  again, that would be made easier by havign a full game tape.  "look at the game tape!" nice work though; keep em comin.

that is my concern....

his weight. the dude just doesnt seem like he wants it...until someone nags his arse about his weight then he gets mad that someone called him seasonable plumb (big boned) and improves over the course of the season....to bad this happens in week 2 of the season and not durign the spring. and then he eats deep fried cheese covered powder sugar coated donuts all winter. i feel like if he was getting truely meaningful snaps he would be starting over a walk-on...conditioning shouldnt be a problem at this point in the season . say what you want about a redshirt but the dude was a 5 star recruit if im not mistaken...and he plays behind a walk-on...faaaack the normal trajectory, dude should be playing given the talent he is competeing against based on pure natural ability - which speaks to my point: he just doesnt want it every play. i hope he gets it together, i really really do because he has the measurables to be dominate, but i just dont see the effort outside of the few snaps a game he gets spelling martin (p.i.c. he is only willing to play hard for a few snaps because he wants some [not curly] french fries from the concession stand).

if BWC gets into starting rotation before the end of the season i will stop smoking a pack of cigarettes during michigan football games (only day a week i smoke) - someone can hold me to it

Sooo Disappointing

to watch Heiniger get PT while Big Willie Style goes the way of Will Smith's rap career.  I was so pumped when he signed with UM thinking hed follow in the model of moderately effective to down right nasty dlinemen UM has had in recent years like Branch, Watson, and Taylor (not in order of nastiness)....but alas dreams are made to be broken.  If he doesn't give consistent effort under Mattison and Hoke its just never going to happen.  Unless someone lights a Texas-sized wildfire under Will's large arse I don't see him doing much - doesn't seem motivated despite incremental improvements from time to time.

I see this as a huge problem and i think Ziff72 is right: some type of position change or personnel swap is needed - even if its just for certain downs/distance to give the other team something to think about.  I do like the idea of sliding RVB inside as I think he and Martin are savy enough to cause trouble on the inside...maybe even try Roh inside and see if he can't beat some of that muscle with his athleticism or make some tackles with his longer arms.  Either way this situation seems to spell Barney Rubble

I agree with the locking onto receivers but

why not help him by running plays that allow him to have only 1 or two easy reads?  This is what RR did and Denard put up decent numbers passing.  To me, all you need to look at is the Dileo (whats the dillio?) touchdown.  Denard takes one step forward, makes a quick read, and either fires the ball to a wide open receiver or runs.  IMO this is where he is best - quick reads with the option to run.  How many big gains did UM have last year on these plays?  I seem to remember quite a few (passes to Roy v. ND & Ill.; bomb to Stonum agaisnt Miami; pass to Jr. against IU to name a few) - i realize these are option plays....BUT THEY WORK.  Obviously you can't do this on every pass play and I understand that you want to implement parts of Borges offense but these seem like the pass plays that Denard is most effective at - simple reads, short throws, and lots and lots of YAC.  Denard will never be Drew Brees throwing the deep ball so to ask him to do it over and over again isn't productive (no matter how many jump balls Jr. snags).  Take ur shots downfield to keep the defense honest but use what has worked in the past with basically the same personnel - make Denard's life easier.  Seems like you could even do this out of the I - run a QB Power but then step back make a quick read and fire...or run.  Either way the passing game needs to be more effecient. Why not use something Denard has proven he can do well?

i thought it was refreshing to see

changes made during the game in the defensive playcalling.  the defense look soooo out of sorts the first 2 drives but then mattison tightened it up and adjusted his gameplan...i dont think GERG did that once.  i dont think weve seen enough offensive plays and/or struggles to judge AB's in-game strategy but its nice to know that we have some versatility in the defensive playcalling compared to last year's drop back in zone and rush 3 or blitz everyone and let the safties get torched like one of mannigham's doobie snacks. borges' willingness to incorporate some plays for denard into his usual playbook speaks somewhat to that but as for in-game adjustments i think the jury is still out - thanks rain and brandon herron's awesomeness.  im excited about the improvement in coaching. here's to hoping the players can follow suit.

I was inspired by the OSU guy on youtube

Im going to eat a basket of paint chips, drink a half gallon Kesslers, and sniff glue for the next 6 hours in an attempt to understand how mentally impaired the guy who made those videos about OSU is.  Its gonna be tough but Im doing it for research.  I didn't think it was possible for people to be that stupid - science needs to know how someone that dumb has survived long enough to learn how to walk let alone make a Youtube video

The planned expansion isn't too bad

The planned expansion doesn't sound too bad and I think the "inset" scoreboard idear is pretty cool.  They better keep the bowl-shape though - I agree with cottonpicker in that it is what sets us apart from other stadiums.  I just hope they don't rename it Stephen M. Ross Stadium anytime soon...(doesn't sound as cool as T. Boone Pickens - sorry Steve)

My only question is are they going to hike up enrollement to fill all the upper-level seating with the appropriate amount of drunk freshman sororiety girls who sit down the entire game and constantly BBM the 4 girls sitting right next to them?

As long as we are stealing lines...

this "may be the worst idea since Greedo shooting first."

Am I alone in thinking Dave Brandon is kind of scarey?  Seems like he's kind of lost the plot with some of these half-asses ideas he's throwing out.  Curly Fries?!? CURLY FRIES?!?!  ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME?!?!  But seriously...a mascot? Moving the OSU game?  Digging up a moment that I (and I assume many other UM fans) have spent the last few years feverishly trying to drink enough to forget about?  Horrible ideas; ideas that only seem like good ideas to Dave Brandon.  And I never liked Domino's pizza.

Just put him in

Just put him in East Quad.  The food in the cafe sucks.  Gauranteed to lose weight.

Would it be out of the question

to propose a sliding GPA scale for initial eligibility?  What I mean is that a college or university's inital eligibilty should be based on the academic rigors of the school.  Take a 3- or 5-year average of the school's overall GPA and make certain deductions to account for athletic prowess.  This may hurt the schools but it would help ensure that the (student-) athlete has a better chance to succede academically as opposed to someone who would never have a chance to cut it academically without signifcant help from the university.  I had several classes with mulitple athletes throughout all four years at UofM and some days I would walk about of class and say "There is no way so-and-so understood a thing that was said in class"...and then have to carry their weight in group projects (I don't want to name names incase they read this and try to find me and beat me up but there were several baseball players including a catcher, 2 linebackers come to mind, and Michael Phelps was a moron - he doesnt really count but I wanted to say it out loud).  By no means is this all encompassing and many, if not most, athletes are true student-athletes but the big time sports definitely had some of the lowest grade getters - and it wasn't their fault.  They just simply could not keep up academically and needed signicant help to remain eligible.  If the goal of the NCAA is truely to perpetuate the well-being of the student-athlete (and not the athlete-bairlypassingstudent) this makes sense.  The kid has proven they can cut it athletelically but that is only half of the equation.  I don't know.  I'm trying to quit smoking some maybe its just the little nicotine monsters in my head talking...goin to buy more gum

Brady Hoke says

"If you zone- block all the time you gonna end up living in a VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!  Now you kids are probably asking yourself, 'How can we get back on the right track?' MANBALL!"

Did anyone else

get goosebumps when they read "No. Its Michigan"?  Love that attitude.

Woud love to see Roh working with Beyer.  They seem to have similar builds upon their arrival in the greatest city ever built and Beyer looks QUICK in his highlights.  Excited to see both - my eyes roll like a slot machine and what comes up? SACKS! SACKS! SACKS!  Jackpot

couldnt agree more

this guy looks like he can still fill out some and  maybe add an inch...before he makes it to college.  reminds me a lot of a craig roh type of player: tall, athletic, and built.  he would be scarey coming off the edge at either DE or LB...or maybe a little of both?  hopefully godin is in his ear and hoke can sign him up.

the single biggest threat to u of m is...

manbearpig!  why wont anyone believe me?  im super serial!

seriously though, manbearpig in a #1 jersey and jim tressels head on a stake...

It took 2 minutes

for my comment box to load!  I didn't think it took bandwidth to set off fireworks....

Seperate Note: someone please tell me that Brady Hoke is doing a Matt Foley impression at Mock Rock this year...
