3 years 27 weeks ago Mouton's Fault

Mouton keeps flowing to the left on the play, but he vacates the zone he is supposed to be covering. He should be passing Purdue85 onto the other linebacker.

If you stop the video at the 9 second mark you can see a WR coming in from the right. Since Mouton left his zone, this WR is actually open underneath. At that point Mouton is still continuing to the left and out of his zone. The only person in the zone is the Umpire. I doubt he'd make a play on the ball if it was thrown.

3 years 27 weeks ago Penalties Issued When The Clock Is Running

Whenever a penalty is called when the clock is running, after the ball is reset the clock will re-start. This ensures that teams won't committ a penalty just to stop the clock.

I believe this is only for pre-snap penalties like the two that were issued. For a holding penalty, I think the clock is based on the result of the play, ie incomplete pass stops the clock but a tackle in bounds the clock re-starts.

3 years 31 weeks ago Wuhoo! That's me!!!!

I do the MSUFR for defense at The Only Colors. MSU ran the same defense against everyone this year. And last year. And in 2007.

http://www.theonlycolors.com/2009/10/9/1077716/2008-defensive-scheme

From the MSUFR:

"Throughout the first 3 quarters Michigan was basically in yakety sax mode on offense. Forcier threw into the flat to a HB who never looked for the ball forcing Michigan to take a FG on their first drive. On Michigan's last drive of the first half, they ran a play that involved three players staring at each other in the backfield and pondering why Brandon Minor had the ball. That was followed with a bad snap that led to a sack/intentional grounding. Michigan simply self destructed in the redzone and got a FG. In the second half there was the play where 99 Worthy literally fell backwards on Tate Forcier and prevented him from getting a first down. Which was followed with the are you kidding me fake punt. Later, Michigan had a Denard Robinson drive end when Robinson decided standing in the pocket for 5+ seconds and seeing no one open required him to stand in the pocket longer. If he had tucked the ball and ran at any point he could have gotten a significant amount of yardage. We've all see the Robinson highlight against Western Michigan so we know what he can do with the ball on the run. There were other plays where open receivers simply dropped the ball. Through the first three quarters Michigan's mistakes on offense made the MSU defense look good."

http://www.theonlycolors.com/2009/10/6/1072368/msufr-defense-against-mic...

Throughout this year MSU has been adding small adjustments to the defense. Against CMU, the DBs were 10 yards off the LOS. Against ND, they would show press coverage and then back out before the snap. Against Wisconsin they actually had press coverage. I honestly don't recall anything new against Michigan.

3 years 32 weeks ago MSU Prep For Michigan

If MSU does something specific to prep for Michigan, then evidently the offense has not changed much from 2007.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6PUl7tJZkc&feature=player_embedded

Watch the 4th quarter come back and you will see the same awesome defensive sets MSU used against Lloyd Carr's team as they used against RichRod's the last two years.

Three LBs on the field at all times. Nickel package involves removing a defensive lineman, best shot of that is on Henne's last TD pass.

3 years 32 weeks ago Good Point

I'll know for sure after the Illinois game.

I sincerely doubt that MSU makes any changes to the defense though.

3 years 32 weeks ago FINALLY!!!!!

I have been waiting all week for this!!!!

The Other Side:

http://www.theonlycolors.com/2009/10/6/1072368/msufr-defense-against-mic...

On why Michigan can't throw the bubble screen. Offensive Analysis 2 of 17, MSU blitzes the two LBs in the box. Everyone else is in man coverage which is why the safety rushes towards the LOS and the slot receiver. 34 Denson, the other player highlighted, has man coverage on Brown which is why he heads towards the play.

As far as MSU prepping explicitly for this game. They don't. That is the shitty defense they have run all year. The shitty defense I have been reviewing. The shitty defense I have been bitching about. It didn't change. Against Wisconsin, MSU added the wrinkle of having the DBs line up in tight coverage. Other than that, it was the same against CMU and ND. The only change that was added for Michigan was how far out the third LB would split when Michigan had trips to one side.

Like I said in my UFR, the difference between the first 55 minutes and the last 5 minutes was Michigan finally started executing. All of the Michigan miscues are what cost them this game.

3 years 47 weeks ago Penn State Defensive Adjustments

At the start of the game, Penn State was in a nickel defense. Michigan promptly shoved the ball down PSU's throat to get to a 10-7 lead.

Penn State then adjusted to a 4-3 defense basically ignoring one of the Michigan receivers. Michigan continued to run well getting another TD to lead 17-7.

After that PSU made a personnel change at LB. The new LB was effective in slowing down the running game. At this point Threet also started throwing Taco Pants. This was with about 12 minutes left in the second quarter. Michigan promptly went 3 and out, 3 and out, and 3 and out to finish the half. The start of the second half produced a drive that garnered one first down. The next Michigan first down was on McGuffie's run at the end of the 4th quarter.

Penn State made adjustments early in the game that dared Michigan to throw the ball. Obviously PSU's decision was a good one as the Michigan offense collapsed.

Penn State loaded the box to stop the run and Michigan was not effective enough throwing the ball to offset that adjustment. This year could be a different story with the new QBs.

Penn State has been weak at DT for the last two years. 2007 was the hand it to Mike Hart for 3.5 yards year. The same sorry DTs are back this year. Michigan should again be able to run the ball up the middle. With any effective passing this will create problems for the PSU defense.

4 years 1 week ago Interesting

So, for anyone who has an Overall rating of less than 80, they do not have a claim because EA is saying they suck. Who would endorse a product that says they are terrible? Even Billie Mays wouldn't do that.

4 years 1 week ago Public Figure

I do not see how this lawsuit has any merit.

The athletes are public figures. Each University will release a media guide with a picture of the players. The players will be made available for interviews etc etc.

Could they next sue newspapers for making money by using pictures of the players during a game? The newspaper would be using the players likeness.

This to me is basically the same as a Papparazi photographing celebrities and then selling the images. People magazine then publishes the images and literally makes money of the likeness of the celebrity.

Can someone explain to me why this has any merit?

Off hand, I am guessing that this lawsuit was brought about to just get a quick settlement from EA for Keller.

4 years 3 weeks ago Nice Work Brian

These writeups on the players are great. Good work Brian!

4 years 25 weeks ago Kos Krugman

You called the Coulter Kos Krugmen award by both names.

4 years 25 weeks ago Medical Redshirts

Are rare, and most likely not possible to get one.

You do not get one immediately, you get one by applying for it after the completion of your career. IE after his 4th year he applies to get a 5th year of eligibility. If you have any playing time after the injury, (IE if you were hurt as a Sophomore and played your Junior and Senior year) the NCAA will say no.

4 years 25 weeks ago Recruiting Board

Brian,

Any chance you could add a section to the recruiting board just for the early enrollees? I know you already identify them with EE, but it'd be nice to see who is coming in January.

Also, when do they submit paperwork or does the University announce when a kid is officially enrolled? Is that sometime in December? Can they do it in January? Anyone know?

4 years 25 weeks ago Schafer and the Defense

You can't blame the defense for the bad season they had. As much as that doesn't make sense I'll explain it. Its on the offense. If the offense had played any better, the defense would have been drastically better.

Against Penn State in the 2nd quarter:
The Michigan offense went 3 and out, 3 and out and a 3 and out. Penn State got the ball back with 2:01 to play and put together a 58 yard TD drive. So, one first down by the offense and Penn State might not get the ball back in the 2nd half. That would improve the D's numbers.

In the 4th quarter. Michigan's offense fumbled, 3 and out and a 3 and out. One first down and PSU is probably taking a knee at the end of the game rather than the 80 yd TD drive. Two first downs and Penn State doesn't get the ball back.

So, for a whopping 30 more yards of offense Michigan would have taken 138 yards and 14 points off the board against the defense.

The pattern is repeated throughout the season. The offense gets into a rut of 3 and out and that simply gives our opponents too many opportunities. A few first downs here and there and another scoring drive or two and the defense is magically better.

The offense was simply killing the team all season. Next year with the more mobile QB the defense will improve just because the offense will get more first downs.

4 years 26 weeks ago Might I add

Kick ass.

That is one hell of a defensive line recruiting class.

Especially if Campbell signs.

Does anyone know when we'll have verification of who the early enrolees are? IE when the paperwork finishes putting them on campus?

Campbell said he is graduating in December. Will he enroll early?

4 years 26 weeks ago Dantonio is Right to root for tOSU

This is a brilliant move on his part for a number of reasons.

1. It helps him with his fan base. Yes, the Spartan hatred for Michigan is hugely impressive.

2. It actually helps his team. If Michigan State has to play USC in the Rose Bowl they would get f'n obliterated. However, playing in the Capitol One bowl or other non-BCS bowl provides Sparty a great chance for victory.

When the hell is the last time MSU won a bowl game? This would be huge for them to finally get a win. It would be a nice recruiting tool for their program and a good second year for Dantonio. Getting crush in the Rose Bowl would not be. In another couple of years it'd be a different story, but right now Sparty isn't loaded with talent to take on the likes of USC.

4 years 26 weeks ago 2010 vs 2012

Some people are saying RR should be on the hot seat in 2010, Brian thinking he needs until 2012.

I actually think this team will improve next year with the addition of Forcier and Beaver.

Right now I blame all of the losses on the QB. Better QB performance would help the defense a ton. Getting a few first downs instead of the massive 3 and outs rests the defense but more importantly reduces the number of series the other teams offense has.

The Penn State game is the best example. In the 2nd quarter 3 straight 3 and outs allowed the PSU score right before the half. One first down prevents Penn State from scoring. In the 2nd half, basically no first downs allowed the 80 yard screen play. One first down in the 4th quarter prevents that. Also, a more mobile QB might not get sacked for a safety. So a Forcier/Beaver QB would probably take 16 points off the board for Penn State.

That would also most likely mean wins against Toledo, Utah, and NW. So I'm betting on a big improvement for Michigan next year.

4 years 26 weeks ago 33.6%

You simply can't win with 33.6%.

Bacher was 17/29. Threet and Sheridan combined for 12/36.

RR was doomed from the start this season. You can not have an offense that doesn't require passing without a mobile QB. An immobile inaccurate QB is death on wheels.

Next year Threet will be 3rd on the depth chart and Sheridan will be 4th. The offense will actually improve a ton because the QB will be willing to run if he can't throw the ball.

Expect two more years of growing pains for the offense, but a significant improvement in the W-L column.

4 years 28 weeks ago Uh, so what is Tate's issue

Uh, so what is Tate's issue with enrolling early?  I was really riding high based on that.

Also, any idea when it will be known who enrolled early?  I'm guessing by sometime in December we would know whe is scheduled to be at school.

4 years 28 weeks ago Passing Options

Brian,

Michigan has two options in throwing the ball in this formation.

One is a screen to the WR not on the line.  The two WRs on the line can then go downfield to block.  If the ball is thrown behind the LOS there will be no penalty.

The other option is to fake the screen.  The covered WR would stay in to block making it look like a screen while the outside WR goes downfield.  A pump fake by Threet might cause the corners to bite on the screen giving broken coverage to the WR heading downfield.

These two options should be easier to do since Michigan has only run out of this formation all year.  It would hopefully cause the defense to think run helping the pass.
