I was looking, several times,

I was looking, several times, at the youtube clip posted in the section discussing the lateral-- if you watch it, I think it really does not look like the receiver touches it in live action (even trying to pause it)-- but the TV freeze-frame that joeyb posted shows a clear touch.  I couldn't watch the game on TV so I never saw the freeze frame.

I don't especially appreciate being voted a troll for an honest opinion.  It doesn't speak especially well of the board culture.  There's nothing in my posts that indicates I'm less than sincere, which I am.  Thanks to joeyb and some of the other commenters for their comments.

thanks

Thanks joeyb, that's a better shot and it did hit the receiever.  Less helpful is El Jeffe.

it doesn't touch the receiver!

seriously, watch it closely, the wind catches it and pushes it forward.  Watch it in slow motion, whatever, it doesn't touch the wideout.

disagree on "lateral"

As much as I wish the sad kitten throw were a lateral, I don't see how you can call it that given that replay-- the key is where the ball is when it leaves the QB's hands and where it is when it hits the turf.  It's really clear from that video that it leaves Cousins's evil Sparty hand at the 37 and eventually touches down at the 38.  The actual trajectory has a curve to it, as Cousins did originally throw it slightly backwards, but the wind must have adjusted the ball's flight forwards before it could hit the ground.  So I'd blame the Michigan-hating Sparty God of Trash Wind rather than the refs for that event.

Brian, please stop trolling

Brian, please stop trolling your own website.

Not a particularly effective column

This essay works at cross purposes with itself and is therefore a bad essay.  The latter half seems intended to sway readers who currently like the manball concept, while the first half demonizes that same group.  You aren't going to change people's minds after you've accused them of all being an unimaginative old, bearded white dude (and they're all suckers for Teh Lamestream Mediaz too LOLOL!!11!).  This piece reads like a Bryan hissy fit, pretty much the same hissy fit he's been having for months.

Chait's essay provides an excellent comparison-- he makes essentially the argument as Brian does, but Chait sympathetically understands that the Hoke perspective comes from a legitimate place, culturally and historically, and argues against the idea from there.  I could imagine a run-it-up-the-gut supporter reading Chait's piece and coming away more open to the spread; all I can imagine that same reader thinking after reading Brian's essay is that Brian is an a-hole.  Ultimately this piece only works as "take that!" porn for the section of the spread supporters who are insecure about their position for whatever reason.

For the record, I'm a strong supporter of the spread.  I'm also a strong supporter of Brian Shut Your Pie Hole about Hoke/manball Unless You Have Something New or Useful to Say About It.

hopefully

these free throws get THJ's back into the feel of things

really hope Hardaway Jr.

heats up-- can't see UM sticking around without him making his presence felt

Jim Nantz

is the Duke of announcing, except that Duke is actually very good at its job

Let's not start complaining about refs

until we're about 10 points behind.  Right now is the time for positive thinking

UM sticking around

I am glad that Novak is Hulking Out right now

arrgh

Duke's clearly a lot more talented, but the way they're playing thus far they look beatable IF Michigan shot the lights out.  I know part of the bad UM shooting is Duke defense, but the boys also just aren't playing well right now
