Ridiculous that they get paid

Ridiculous that they get paid for their services? They get paid to go to school, in the forms you mentioned. Why is it ridiculous that they get paid more than that?

College Football seem to me to be this artificial market where every athlete on a particular team is paid exactly the same amount (or absolutly nothing for a walk-on), where the university reaps the benefits (or costs) with a completly fixed wage scale. It seems highly unfair to me.

I would have much less problem with the whole thing if the NFL allowed players in at any age. Don't forget that athletes essentially have to play college football.

Jameson

on the rocks.

Actually I'm going to

Actually I'm going to disagree with you. Man U's young players are playing for playing time, MLS's are in playoff hunts and international competitions.  As fans, it means more to MLS, but as players it means more to Man U.

I'm not going to say MLS

I'm not going to say MLS doesn't have that advantage, or can sniff the EPL in talent. This is a friendly for both sides, and yes, MLS is embarrassing itself so far.  As a big MLS fan, we in general think it's a little better than it actually is. The value comes in getting to watch live soccer, the play has made steady progress but still has to get better.

It's also one of the best

It's also one of the best clubs in the world playing against 23 players who have, and will, only play together for three days of their lives. National teams have hard times coming together, an all-star collection barely qualifies as a 'team'.

Edit: Sorry meant this to be a reply to the above comment about third stringers.

Lamarr Woodley (and Jerome

Lamarr Woodley (and Jerome Jackson) destroyed us 56-7 my junior year.  Saginaw was awesome that year, and then they lost the first round of the playoffs.

A lot of the ratings I've

A lot of the ratings I've read come with the caveat that they don't take into account mass audiences - exactly what you are talking about.  I assume those are more difficult to estimate, and I have a feeling soccer has one of the biggest bar crowds of any sport.  Don't know if these numbers account for these or not.

I know you tried to avoid it,

I know you tried to avoid it, but I'll throw in my opinion of soccer in the country - MLS has been steadily growing and will continue to grow.  It's hard to say when, but I wouldn't be surprised if we are talking about the MLS as clearly in the #5 spot, and competing with NHL for being considered the fourth sport in the country in the next five or so years.  To be fair, I may be overly optimistic, I am hoping for more popularity for the MLS, as more more will raise the quality.

MLS has had a steady climb in attendance in the past few years, and any temporary boost in attendance can be really beneficial, as I think watching a soccer game live is a unique experience, and some of the temporary boost will become permanent fans.

Crossing my fingers, at least.

Up and Under's

I watched US-England at Up and Under's at it was a great atmostphere.  It's a lot smaller than Waysides so it was pretty packed with soccer fans.  I've never really liked Wayside, to be fair.

Yes!  I loved Lucifer's

Yes!  I loved Lucifer's Hammer, though a lot of what Niven and Pournelle did together was good quality.

On the sci-fi topic, I love Richard Hienlien, Stranger in a Strange Land and Starship Troopers are both fantastic book.  If anyone is a fan of military philosophy, Starship Troopers is a really interesting read (along the lines of Ender's Game).

I'll second Herodotus, I

I'll second Herodotus, I don't recall how much of him I read, but I starkly remember reading about the Persian Wars, especially the Battle of Thermopylae.

If you like ancient histories, I'd also recommend Twelve Cesaers by Suetonius, it's on the lives, both public and personal, of the Cesaers from Julius to Domitian.   I found it fascinating, and the parts that describe the depravity of Caligula and Nero are haunting.

Oh I wasn't disagreeing with

Oh I wasn't disagreeing with the call, just wasn't a whole lot Kewell could do about it.

There go the socceroos chances.

Kewell handball in the box, red card and Ghana converts the penatly.

A little unlucky to get a red like that, but 65 minutes a man down will spell doom, although Ghana will make this fun to watch!

Agree completly

After watching the england game, my first thought for Slovenia was bring on Torres and Buddle.  I was very unimpressed with Clark, and Findley was about exactly what we expected.  I'm a little worried about us giving up some dangerous counters, but our talent level should win out.

So excited for tomorrow....

I'll be watching it

At Up and Under's in Kalamazoo.

Also, I can't imagine that there won't be crowds watching it at most places, BDubs had fans there for just about every WC game in 2006, if that's your style.  If I were in Ann Arbor, I'd probably go to Connor's, I'm sure there'll be a big crowd there.

I like it

I'd start Torres over Edu at this point, the US seemed to have trouble getting any link to the forwards without him.  I'd slot Gomez in as a second half sub up top as well, but other than that I agree.  I'm pretty excited after they looked pretty good in the second half today.

I was really impressed with

I was really impressed with Findley today, as well at Torres.  I was definitely was surprised when Robbie was included in the 23, but he looked really good today.

14 days...

Yes.

Italian stadiums are pretty outdated.  The feeling is they need the motivation of winning a Euro cup bid to get to work updating the stadiums, although they are starting to slowly do so.  Juventus just starting breaking ground on a new stadium in Turin, and both Roma and Lazio are trying to get bids for their own new stadiums built so they can move out of the olimpico, but I don't think either of those are moving yet.

I'm a big fan

of matchfitusa.com also.  I like Jason's podcast (American Soccer Show) if anyone's into that scene as well.

Man, I hadn't even thought of Man, I hadn't even thought of that, that'll be great. It's already pretty interesting having the premier sports news organization being a party with strongly vested interests. I can't wait to hear 1000 times next year how the BCS championship will be the greatest event in the history of man.
It was tough to truly judge It was tough to truly judge freshman Jimmah, every other play he was either beneath three D-linemen or running for his life. Snead will have all the time in the world and then hit opposing DBs right between the numbers.
Well played, sir. Well played, sir. Unfortunately, being that clever never seemed to serve me all that well...
Including sacks, Arizona is averaging 0.25 yards per pass play. Impressively inept.
I don't know why someone I don't know why someone would neg this, this is a really good point. There are plenty of studs in high school that don't turn out to be good college players. Obviously there's a strong correlation, but it is a different game and the vast majority of players - especially quarterbacks - need time to adjust, i.e. redshirting.
I've never seen anything like I've never seen anything like that in a football game. That posturing was haunting. Thank God he seems to be okay, best wishes to him.
Can't wait to see the data on Can't wait to see the data on conferences, I think that could be very interesting.
Hard to tell from where I was Hard to tell from where I was sitting, but I thought I saw Fitzgerald slam right into O linemen a lot - the same problem he was having last time he got PT. I'm hoping I'm wrong, I do remember him making one really nice fill on a 3rd down.
DSU DSU sealed being my favorite I-AA team when their band did the wave. That was awesome.
I want Florida to get stomped Just so I can say "BOOM! MALLETTED" to complete and utter strangers for a week.
I've been a grad student here I've been a grad student here at MSU for two years now, and when I read those comments for the first time (I read a similar article on a different site awhile back; unfortunately, it had similar comments too), it was the most (and probably the only) time I've been embarrassed to be associated with this school. I'm in disbelief people think like that. I will say for the most part the people I'm around here are pretty class, but I'm sure I'm distanced from most of the "bra's". But yes, disgusted by the fans.
Amen Amen. This should be required reading for any fans who trash their players.
Laird's clearly worked hard Laird's clearly worked hard as hell this year, played great defense and swung a mediocre stick for a catcher. And he had a bad day at the plate, and you trash him? Do you think he wasn't trying hard enough or something? I saw a player who was over matched and had a rough day, and I'm sure he feels a thousand times worse than you do for it. I'm sure he's going to think about it all offseason. Honestly you sound like you've never been an athlete. I'm sorry I made this personal but I can't believe people go after a player like that for having a bad game. Fucking negbang me, but you, sir, make me sick.
Well said. Those guys were Well said. Those guys were working their asses off tonight and the entire season. I'm sure they feel way way worse than any fan.
Agree with you completly, I Agree with you completly, I thought Rodney pitched great. And if people are gonna bitch about one blown save over an entire year, you're never gonna be happy with ANY closer.
Nice! I have two in my cart too. Making my night. Good catch!
Well said, I agree with you Well said, I agree with you every step of the way. Interesting you mentioned Ezeh, because I feel the same way. I scream at the tv when he doesn't hit his gap or bites a fake, but I have a ton of respect for him, because he never seems to give up. I'm sure he's as frustrated as we are, he knows he's not playing up to his potential, but he's out there working hard til the end of the game. While we're talking about the defense, I just want to say I love watching Donovan Warren play. He just looks like he wants to win more than anything. God I love this team.
http://www.theonlycolors.com/ http://www.theonlycolors.com/ is a good MSU blog that has started doing a UFR thing the past two weeks. I think KJ does a real good job on that site, I remember really liking how he came down really hard on Conboy and the hockey team last year after all that shit. I like http://www.rivalryesq.com/ for a quick read up on the other big ten teams as well. Good collection of writers there.
I agree with you but why would you bury anyone on the team? I can understand being disappointed with someones performance, or wondering why the team can't perform better, but these are 20 year old kids working their asses off for the team. If there was some indication that he wasn't working hard enough, then I could understand it. But I don't understand all the anger against him. He's trying his best and he can't cut it, I don't think we cant hold it against him. (This isn't at you jg, just seemed a decent place to put it). I've just always been miffed when UM fans boo or jeer their own players, for lack of talent. I'm sure I'm a bit defensive about it, but I don't understand it at all.
I was... I was thinking the same thing completely. A good looking women probably has to do a helluva lot to get a group of guys to want to boot her.
It's common to most(all?) It's common to most(all?) closers, not just Rodney. Many closers are not necessarily the best relievers, but react to the pressure really really well, and when the pressure is not there, they badly under perform. I have no stats, but the difference in performance in save situations vs. non-save situations is pretty stark for a lot of closers. Todd Jones is a really good example, I think in his final season his ERA was under 2 in save situations, and over six in other situations.
I don't even see the need for I don't even see the need for a different setting.
Yep I played safety, and anytime we played an option team, well all knew we had to light up the QB everytime he kept it. Yeah, there's a line with keeping it legal, I agree they shouldn't go helmet to helmet. But beyond that, you know every team's D tries to knock the QB out (legally, hopefully) every time he keeps it.
I have to I have to agree with you, that holding call was bogus. I remember thinking at the time it evened out a bad call UM's way, but I can't recall what. But yes, that holding call was a tough break for you guys.
Yes You said what I was was trying to say...and said it much better. Yes, I can't root for them but I can prefer that they win. Beating an undefeated OSU is way better than beating a mediocre one. I'm glad they way you said it made it sound more rational.
I know its been debated ad I know its been debated ad nauseam on this board, but I prefer for the big ten to win every out of conference game. I think the conferences stature in the eyes of the voters is important. Neg-bang away if you want, but I'd prefer OSU to beat USC. But I'm still gonna laugh my ass off when they get stomped by 30 again, which is what I expect will happen...
Yeah I think I want OSU to win as well, for a few reasons, but I like the way you said it. But I think that means I can't watch the game, since I can't see those jerseys and not cheer against them. But man, I hate USC too, hopefully it's a good game.
Well done Loved it.
Deep Balls Of the deep passes I saw on the highlights, two out of the three were badly underthrown and should have been broken up or intercepted, the DB was just really out of position or didn't play the ball well in the air. Again, I only saw that highlights, and any team with speedy receivers makes me a little nervous, but I'm not sold on ND's offense.
I'm with you I got a lot of respect for refs - it's a thankless job, and it's tough. You can hate on them all you want, but the vast majority are good at what they do and trying to do their best.
It's nice to hear It's nice to hear stories that put things in perspective. That was incredibly courageous. A true hero, especially when that word gets tossed around too often these days.
