2 weeks 5 days ago Out of state students

Can we get rid of the out of state students with money to burn meme. U of M costs roughly 50k per year to go to out of state but I, and many others, came here because it's one of the best schools in the country. I and my parents scrimped and saved and got loans so I could attend this great instituion. Most out of state students do not have money to burn, and guess what? Every in state student isn't a diehard fan.

3 weeks 6 days ago Maryland Abbreviation

I usually see the abbreviation as UMD (MD=Maryland) or UMCP (University of Maryland College Park as there are 4 other schools in the UM system).

And this letter is hilarious and more importantly makes my Terp friends very embarrassed.

5 weeks 2 days ago snow

it was also snowing at the start of the game today, probably had more to do with it.

5 weeks 6 days ago Quick and dirty decoder ring

This is in order of how I and my hockey playing/following friends see the league setup.

"Adult" Professional:

NHL

KHL (Russian pro league, this is where a lot NHLer went during the lockout)

AHL (think AAA baseball)

High Level Premier European Leagues (Swedish, etc)

ECHL (think AA baseball)

SPHL (A baseball)

Federal League (not from the movie slapshot. I know they pay their players, beyond that I know nothing other than it only has 4 teams)

Next we have the junior/college level leagues which also have high school players

Canadian Major Junior (OHL=mostly Ontario; QMJHL=Quebec and east; WHL=west Canada, Washington, Oregon.) Major junior leagues pay their players a stipend which in the NCAA's eyes make them professional and destroys college eligibility. Junior requires players to be 16 to 20.

College

NCAA

CIS (Canadian University, typically older than NCAA players and most likely have played major junior as that does not make you ineligible, usually not going anywhere afterwards)

Junior A Tier I

USHL-Premier US Junior league, the NDTP (National Development Training Program) has it's under 18 team play in this league.

Canada has a series of leagues (BCHL, OJHL) that play at the same level as the USHL and do not pay their players so the players retain elibility

Junior A Tier II

The NAHL is considered a Tier II Junior A league, it is filled with young players (15 or 16) trying to move up to the USHL and then on to high leagues or 18/19/20 year olds still chasing the dream. Most of Eastern Michigan's club roster is guys who played in the NAHL at the end of or after high school.

There is Tier III junior A, then Junior B, and Junior C.

Next comes the high school or Midget levels. High school in Minnesota or the New England preps schools is equal (in my opinion) to Midget AAA played by teams out of the Detroit area.

10 weeks 5 days ago BEAT NMU

If anyone is interested in going to the game tonight, if you enter the promo code BEATNMU at the ticket buying page of mgoblue.com you can get $10 tickets with no fees.

13 weeks 1 day ago Logistics

I think there are a few logistical concerns, the one about hotel spaces has already been mentioned. The other one I see is how would WWE get their massive stage into to the stadium? I've heard large concerts cannot go to the Big House because of how smaller the 1 tunnel is.

If they could figure it out, I think it'd be fun. I was at Wretlemania the last time it was in Detroit and it was one hell of a time.

15 weeks 23 hours ago School of Information

That isn't the school of information north building. That building is to the left of the one you took the picture of. The building with the garage door in it is the Gerstacker Building and the tall building behind it is the Engineering Research Building.

The school of information north building does not house the school of information anymore, they have moved down to North Quad on central campus.

16 weeks 2 days ago Line Graph

I don't like that there are lines connecting the discrete points, I'd rather see a scatter plot which each player be a seperate dot. /nitpick

16 weeks 2 days ago Where'd you get one?

Where'd you get one?

16 weeks 4 days ago Boston College and Georgia

Boston College and Georgia Tech please. Two good/great schools, southern exposure and BC hockey. Plus I bet BC and GT would add lacrosse at that point and we could have epic B1G hockey and a solid B1G lacrosse league.

18 weeks 2 days ago Saw the lights

Driving home from hockey I saw all the cops/firetrucks/etc blocking packard at granger and was wondering what had happened. That sucks for those effected, losing your home is terrible and doubly so in the winter.

19 weeks 19 hours ago fair enough, I'm in that

fair enough, I'm in that endzone so I couldn't see the whole play, lots of bodies blocking the action.

19 weeks 19 hours ago this season

19 weeks 20 hours ago penalty on Trouba

Looked like the guy tried to hit Trouba and fell down how was that a penalty?

20 weeks 2 days ago Treais Major

He should lose the C for that elbow to the head, it was selfish, unnecessary, and dangerous. Luckily our PK come through with an empty netter. plays like that are the epitome of what's wrong with this team.

20 weeks 6 days ago ABC

A group of friends and I will be at ABC. Maybe hop between there and MASH. I'm really shocked by the lack of things going on and it seems like those high priced things happening don't come with an open bar which is incredibly dissapointing after spending last NYE at an open bar next to Jackson Square in New Orleans.

23 weeks 3 hours ago CIC

If they could pull this off and get Hopkins into the CIC, the research portfolio would be uncanny.

24 weeks 5 days ago AAU

I know they aren't AAU, but USNews ranks them #31 in the US (Michigan is #29) so it all depends what metric you rank academics on. And let's be honest, the B1G is just going after TV markets now.

24 weeks 5 days ago Boston College

If we're going for big TV markets, then let's get Boston, plus we'd get their hockey. And hopefully it'd piss off Notre Dame more.

26 weeks 1 day ago System School

The system school remark is also unneccesary. University of Maryland College Park is more seperate from UM Baltimore COUNTY (UMBC) then Michigan is from Michigan Dearborn or Michigan Flint. UMBC plays D-I athletics on it's on. UM-Baltimore is where all the professional schools are (dentistry/med school/law). UM Eastern Shore is also a completely seperate college (HBCU) as is the confusingly named (to some people) University of Maryland University College.

If anything the Maryland system is set up more like the University of California sytem (UCLA/Berkeley/Davis/etc are seperate schools with UCSF being the main medical campus).

Source: Marlyand born and raised, half my friends went to UMCP or UMBC, dad went to UM-Baltimore Law. I went to Michigan.

28 weeks 3 hours ago 1 Division, 10 Schools

There are 10 public high schools in DC that play in the DCIAA. There is an east and a west division and the top two teams from each division make the playoffs. Anacostia finished second in the east and goes up against Wilson HS who won the West.

The schools with football have between 700 and 1000 kids, with Wilson being the one exception having almost 1500.

The private schools in the DC area play in there own leagues and then Maryland and Virginia also run their own playoffs.

32 weeks 21 hours ago Merill

Merill just got hit from behind into the boards chasing a puck, he got up and to say he was woozy was an understatement. No penalty called, hopefully it's nothing major.

32 weeks 6 days ago trophy series

why not have us ans state play for the Mason Cup each year? whoever wins the season series gets it.

It says season not played, but that's pretty close to blank

44 weeks 1 hour ago AFAIK

As far as I understand the rules, players have to be compensated at or around the normal rate for the job they are doing. So if Denard could make $100,000 from another baseball team, having him play for Ross' team would be okay.

It's similair to a player getting an ordinary summer job, it's totally cool if they get a normal hourly wage consistent with what you or me would make and get paid only for the hours they work and receive no extra benefits. Some of the big scandals seem to be guys working at car dealerships and getting paid way too much to be a porter or car cleaner or something and getting paid twice as many hours as they actually work.
