Yeah I'm sure they didn't…

Yeah I'm sure they didn't have anything to prove at the big ten championship game.  Also that they'll be 40 pts better on offense and / or -40 pts better on defense.  Because of their last few massive recruiting classes... ranked well into the top 100.

This take is a residual bpone special, imo.  They'll do as bad or worse than Wisconsin did this year... makes sense, Wisconsin was the ultimate bpone game this year (pre-game we're gonna lose omg @wisconsin post-game man wisconsin must really suck this year)

Insert Iowa for Wisconsin and watch these same chicken littles repeat themselves.  Funny thing is these are the same folks that think we can't win without ten straight top rated recruiting classes... and point to Clemson to make their point (Hint - Clemson's first recent championship came on the back of recruiting classes that compare not with Alabama but (gasp) Michigan).

Then again, pink locker rooms, omg let me clutch my pearls.

Cheers.

For me it was the loss to…

For me it was the loss to Iowa.  Would have been nice to get a single piece of justification around why we're getting so much worse and they're getting so much better between now and then.  The OP might have missed the btcg I guess.

Don't blame him, it wasn't close.

Cheers.

They do?  I see a team that…

They do?  I see a team that barely beat Clemson... But I'm guessing they've taken out some ranked teams since then, right?  Because if Clemson is their best win...

I think we know remarkably little about relative conference strength this year - which makes it hard to judge any individual team's strength.

Lol what a bad analysis. …

Lol what a bad analysis.  The context is head coaching - how does Harbaugh's first head coaching job compare with what Day inherited?

Not sure if you're a habitual masochist or a troll.  We have plenty of both here.

Sadly, sparty would prolly live off this more than actually winning their own.

Otoh, many couches and cop cars spared, so win-win.

I've been right there with…

I've been right there with you all season for Michigan being special this year.  But I just can't wrap my mind around this old school reverence of Ohio hs football you have.

Maybe it's because I grew up here but lived most of my adult life in Texas - but tbh Texas / Cali / Florida hs football is much further ahead than Ohio compared to Ohio vs Michigan... Imo - and Cali or Texas players didn't grow up *in* Ohio, hating Michigan, etc, making it harder to recruit them.

Just don't think that Ohio should be our focus.  I get your point that they might have a chip on their shoulder if OSU didn't recruit them but tbh I'd rather model Alabama than MSU.

Cheers.

No way he goes to usc?  Isn't their current ad the same guy that hired him at Cincinnati?

Not saying it's going to happen but I think dismissing it as impossible is a little bold.

In that scenario it would…

In that scenario it would likely be Georgia #1 - if it's a close call between Alabama and someone else for the last spot the idea of it being a rematch of the just played SECCG might be just enough to tilt the balance against Alabama.

Wouldn't seem fair to make Georgia beat them again three week later.  I know, but LSU.

To the OP been stuck in cheboygan for a minute getting the diesel on my sailboat repaired.  Unlike most of the northern Michigan towns I stay at (tc Charlevoix harbor springs bay harbor Petoskey) they actually have adult use stores here!

Been rocking the mem og and dosido (both livwell about 25% thc indica dominant) while I wait it out.

Yeah but... would have been interesting to see the offense he unchained against Florida play all year.

Feel like app st and Wisconsin woulda been wins.  Less sure about Oregon and osu.

Going completely from memory here which assures me we lost the first two (app st Oregon) then won out until the last two (Wisconsin Osu) before unleashing the kraken on FL and their Heisman winning qb.  If I'm confusing those details I apologize.

One thing I'm quite certain on is we owned those gators and the scoreboard didn't even do it justice.  One of my all time favorite UM games.

Cheers.

I'm another optimist but…

I'm another optimist but that's not really how things work.  If you have 9 games that you're a huge (80%)  favorite to win the odds of winning all 9 aren't fantastic...

Sorry my poker brain always takes over.

Otoh even if we're only 30% in the other three games the probability of winning at least one are higher than most folks think...

Yall insane.  Obvs would…

Yall insane.  Obvs would fight a wolverine given I have zero reports of wolverines killing people.

Lions on the other hand will routinely kill people - including dumb folk that try to get lion selfies at a zoo.

But even worse would be a tiger.  A tiger is bigger and meaner than a lion.  Only bears are tougher than tigers.

With this new kid that reclassified I think they're looking to give one of their top rated qb the firm handshake.

What a terrible spot to be in, right?  <PUKE>

I won't scoff at that - I…

I won't scoff at that - I was a scratch golfer who simply couldn't beat my pops (single digit handicap) throughout my early 20s.

Eventually it came down to sinking a 12 footer on 18 (and he literally told me - at the 19th tee - that he didn't think I'd make the putt in a million years) - but once the monkey was off the back I never looked, well, back.

Not at all sure there is a similar dynamic here but definitely wanted to back up your overall dad / son point.  Strange but powerful vibes.

I wouldn't be happy with 8-4…

I wouldn't be happy with 8-4.  But that doesn't really have much to do with being a blue blood imo.

USC, Tennessee, and Nebraska are all examples of blue bloods (again imo) that would be lucky to go 8-4 this year.

Heck Texas is gonna get stomped on by every big 12 team with a pulse - I think they'll be lucky to be above .500 - but, undeniably a blue blood.  A true pita blue blood, but still undeniable.

When folks are talking realignment scenarios they seem to consider Michigan a big prize.  Of some might say a "blue blood" (go damn blue!!)

Cheers.

What team wouldn't want the…

What team wouldn't want the 24th kid from Texas (or Florida or California or Georgia) over the 4th kid from Michigan?  I'm sure there are exceptions but most years.

What I'd really like to know is why Ohio HS football is so far ahead of Michigan?  And has been as long as I can remember (again, potentially excepting some unusual years).

Would really love to hear from some folk that have insight.

Cheers.

Really?  I've been to…

Really?  I've been to several maize out games and feel like fans were at least 80% appropriate.

In any case can't wait for the game - angst or not it'll be great to be back at the stadium (and pregame) - have some relatives coming in from Canada that I haven't seen since the covid crisis so doubly excited.

Cheers.

With the playoff expansion…

With the playoff expansion they could win two of four against (say) Georgia, Bama, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M and still make it in.

This expansion was completely contingent - from both sides - on the playoff expansion.  For folks that were surprised that they bypassed eight and went straight to 12, this is why.

The SEC is playing 3D chess and everyone else is playing tic tac effing toe.  They're making the rest of the major conferences look ridiculous.

Cheers.

Our best bet is to grab USC…

Our best bet is to grab USC and try to leverage that - perhaps by threatening a scheduling moratorium - to pull ND into the conference.

Now would USC go along with that?  Prolly not.  But losing the rivalry game with them might just be the only thing that would convince ND to give up their independence.

And, realistically, that's the only reasonable expansion that doesn't bring in a bunch of dead weight and at least matches the sec expansion - IMO.

I just don't get the whole superconference idea.  At 20-24 teams and assuming divisions what the heck is the difference between a superconference and two conferences that make some sort of deal on regular occ games?

The next best thing would be to just make a deal with the pac 12 that included some ooc guarantees and culminated in the rose bowl.  Which would have it's own value - Alabama folk are *still* bitter about being shut out of the rose way back when so I know it would at least get them at least a little pissy.

Then just tell everyone else to gth - there are plenty of people across the country who *hate* all these expansions and going old school would have it's own draw.

Cheers.

This seems nonsensical.  All…

This seems nonsensical.  All those top schools you mention are competing for elite students.  I guess your argument is that Michigan doesn't have to do much because they don't mind losing those students to the other top tier schools because they have an abundance of second tier students applying?

I don't mind an argument that the OP didn't have a typical experience, but arguing that Michigan doesn't have to compete for students is ridiculous.  They absolutely want to win over folk that have options at Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, etc - many with scholarship offers at those other elite universities.

Or are you saying they roll out the red carpet for those folk but not for less extraordinary applicants?  If that's the case your username is spot on.

Cheers.

So I guess they didn't have…

So I guess they didn't have covid down in Ohio.

Lol, wut??

First if all if you're a "southern belle" in Texas you're a 'plant, prolly from Georgia.

Second even them southeastern transplant ladies don't talk like that in Texas.  Maybe for their first week or two.  They figure out Texas isn't full of a bunch of neutered, sad, girly-drink lovin' southeastern "gentlemen" real quick.

Cheers.

Gotta agree - even back in…

Gotta agree - even back in the old days didn't really understand the plodding pace.  If you think you're a substantially better team you want to run as many plays as possible to *beat* variance.

Cheers.

Michigan simply doesn't have…

Michigan simply doesn't have the crazed football over everything attitude many schools - osu, Alabama, Texas A&M - have.

We tend to inflate how important football is to the school because we're reading and commenting on a Michigan sport specific board.

And - not to be the bearer of bad news - NIL isn't going to be any sort of equalizer.  The schools mentioned above - where football is everything - have boosters and local businesses willing to spend a hell of a lot more than folk in Ann Arbor.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing.  Michigan has so much going for it outside of sports and remains one of the better sports universities both across all sports and also specific to the big two - and Howard is looking to push that to new heights.

Someone mentioned that our record is consistent with our historical record - can't argue that point - I think a lot of us were spoiled by seeing two - three loss UM teams beat undefeated / one loss (higher ranked) OSU teams all the time growing up.  But really *that* was the anomaly, not what's going on now.

Cheers.

We would have made the…

We would have made the proposed 12 team playoff twice under Harbaugh.

Would have been favored in a neutral site rematch against osu in 2016 in that playoff in spite of the loss in their stadium.

Were favored against osu in 2018.  Did we get our asses stomped?  Yes.  Is Vegas pretty good at setting opening lines?  Absolutely.

I don't think anyone is super happy with Harbaugh's results so far but I also think lackluster is a big (negative) exaggeration.

Cheers.

Hadn't even thought of it…

Hadn't even thought of it but Clemson - given the perceived weakness of the ACC might consider the Big Ten.  And given that you no longer have to be a CC to get in, it might be attractive?

Like I said hadn't even thought of Clemson but now my dream additions would be them and ND.  I know everyone hates ND because they passed previously but damn those two would completely overshadow UT and Oklahoma moving to the SEC.

Cheers.

ISU also gives Iowa a true…

ISU also gives Iowa a true rival and frees up an OOC game for them every year.

Cheers.

I don't think that's…

I don't think that's necessarily true.  Look I lived in Texas for 12 years and of course UT is the traditional flagship program.

But as it stands in terms of both recruiting and coaching TAMU is way ahead of UT.   If there was ever a time for them to establish themselves as the big swinging you know what in the state it's right now.

A second thought - UT is the Michigan in the equation and TAMU is the OSU - UT has all these "but we're primarily an outstanding academic institution" and TAMU is all in on football.  UT has hang ups and never had anything like the bonfires, midnight yell, etc like A&M.

And people have recently been bringing up the fact that UM has the third largest endowment among public universities- UT might be first but A&M is a close second (oil money).  The fan base is absolutely rabid.  They have no illusions that they'll outpace UT academically- football is the one thing they might be able to hang their hats on.

OK I'm biased - went to A&M.

Cheers.

I suspect the top of the SEC…

I suspect the top of the SEC would love scheduling Notre Dame because for them it's a fairly easy pre-conference win over a generally overrated / over-hyped team.

I also suspect ND wants nothing to do with the top half of the SEC because generally speaking it would expose them as being overrated / over-hyped.

Jmo.

I’m not gonna disagree about Ed being a mediocre coach but damn if he doesn’t give the most entertaining press conferences - pretty sure even the reporters need a Cajun translator to figure out what the hell he’s saying.

Interestingly I think…

Interestingly I think Clemson is the team everyone points to as being the example of “you can get there without top five recruiting classes”.  If you look at their recruiting leading up to their first national championship it wasn’t really any better than Michigan has been doing.

Someone pointed it out above but I think one of the more interesting questions - not necessarily just for this year but over the next little while - is who can replicate that success with really good but not top five recruiting classes.  Is it even possible these days where the majority of five stars go to just a couple established powerhouses?  Will the playoff expansion actually bring a little more parity?  How will NIL affect the balance of power?

I suspect our board has two types - folks that are only in on Michigan and folks that find cfb fascinating above and beyond that (*).  For the second group these are definitely interesting times.

(*) speaking for myself half the love of cfb is the innovations we see on offense - I watch the nfl mostly for fantasy football reasons but enjoy the college game much more because of the variety of approaches.

Cheers.

Georgia and Texas A&M are on…

Georgia and Texas A&M are on a completely different level than PSU Texas Wisconsin etc.

I feel like being a Georgia fan would be almost as frustrating as being a Michigan fan - other than Alabama I don’t think anyone has recruited at their level over the last half decade - but they just haven’t had the results to match their on the field talent.

Cheers.

I guess of your questions…

I guess of your questions the whole where will Texas be is most interesting to me - I went to A&M and think they’ll continue to be the premier cfb program in Texas.

But Texas always has been so it’s a concern.

Otoh look at recruiting - and I’m convinced being in the SEC now is a huge advantage.

All of which is to say Sark better get stuff done for them in the next year or two or it might become the same damn near insurmountable situation we’re facing against osu.

Cheers.

Just spent a week with my…

Just spent a week with my sailboat docked in Bay Harbor and will second how wonderful it is to play on Lake Michigan like that.

My parents have had a condo at Treetops for over a decade and I’ve played all the courses dozens of times - someone mentioned the Jones course above - the only thing I’d add is that it can be a brutal track for average golfers.

I usually recommend the Smith course to friends who are casual golfers - most of the tees are elevated and have long, fantastic views.  Significantly more forgiving than the Jones course.  And of course it’s worth following that round up with an evening roll around Threetops, which is just a ton of fun.

Cheers.

It can get worse because the…

It can get worse because the Georgia situation goes from keep it quiet money (your 20k but don’t flaunt it) to who cares money (200k go ahead and buy that house).

Who knows - we’ll see.  I just suspect sec boosters are willing to pay substantially more vs UM folk - especially now that it’s all aboveboard.  Understand that to many of those schools athletics is a much bigger priority.  Like Michigan folk like to (rightly) point to academic ratings but SEC folk point to championships.

Cheers.

TAMU jumping into the SEC…

TAMU jumping into the SEC was/is a really big issue for UT - I fully expect the Aggies to be the flagship Texas program for the next decade.  They most definitely should have been in the playoff over ND last year.

Biased tho - gig ‘em.   And setting aside UT and TAMU, I think folks tend to downplay how many other decent college programs there are in Texas splitting that recruiting pie.

Cheers.

I’d be interested in seeing…

I’d be interested in seeing numbers around this alleged buffet of great players coming out of Ohio.  I guess they have good HS football for the Midwest?  Of course I’ve spent most of my adult life in Houston and Austin, so I’m familiar with actual top tier HS football.

Ohio is very overrated in my opinion - and recruiting isn’t nearly as regional as it once was - would much rather focus on pulling kids from Texas, Georgia, Florida, California, etc.

You know, just like OSU does.

Cheers.

I get your point but want to…

I get your point but want to point out that the “unfair playing field” could easily get worse under nil.

Not arguing either way on nil itself but you can bet folks in places like College Station and Tuscaloosa can and will pay enormous endorsements to land five stars - I really wonder if Ann Arbor is willing to keep up tbh... look we’re posting to a sports blog and tend to (imo) overvalue the sports aspect of a university that has so much else to offer in terms of academics and research (and a million other things that have to do nothing with sports).

Not an alum fwiw - I went to TAMU (so I’m familiar with the all encompassing obsession with football in Texas) and then UW-Madison - just grew up in Plymouth going to football / basketball / hockey games.  Definitely recognize and respect all the non-sports excellence that exists at UM.

Cheers.

Are they really starting…

Are they really starting from scratch?  I know my son and his friends have been downloading cfb hacks for Madden forever - adds the players with the numbers and attributes correctly but uses different player names.

Just feels like they could at least start with the madden engine in terms of gameplay (by far the toughest element) and add / adjust existing  modes like franchise appropriately.

Fwiw I’m a software engineer.

Cheers.

Yeah it totally sucks that a Michigan QB didn’t win the super bowl last year... isn’t in goat consideration.  Wait??!

Hell his contemporary Henson eventually returned to football - to lead the mighty Lion practice squad - which might be more impressive than any OSU qb over, I dunno, forever.

Sorry to keep self-replying …

Sorry to keep self-replying - bad form for sure - but wanted to proudly call out an improvement I made this spring - added 400w of solar panels and 400ah of LiFePO4 battery - enough to run my cabin needs (Xbox series s, 35 inch monitor, macbook, phone, instrumentation,  occasional electric bike recharge utilization, occasional stove utilization) and remain independent of running the diesel or shore electrical to serve my daily needs.

And I play a lot of Xbox.

Hmm.  Trying to decide if this entire post is a humble brag on my series s.  ;)

Cheers y’all.
