Recruiting nationally may not be a guaranteed formula for success.
But that does not mean one should not seek quality players wherever one finds them.
Recruiting does not need to be a "local vs. national" binary. It can be a blended approach, and most top-level programs attempt to do just that. It's just a question of degree.

Nice Pulp Fiction reference there! Nice.

a) There are empty seats in that second photo ... is that typical?
b) I remember that game from my childhood ... it was called "Mousetrap."

Same with Pipkens.
Bingo ... I was going to say on the defensive side Pipkens is who I'd focus on.
The ability of the DL to get "push" is going to be something to watch this fall. The DL has been pretty good, but the truly great DLs are just disruptive forces. That starts in the middle and works out. So watching Pipkens this year will be interesting.

Braden is an interesting choice ... particularly when I focus on your "out of necessity" comment. If Braden can be good, then it suggests those with more natural talent can be even better.
It's kinda-sorta the "weakest link" analogy ... focus on the player with the least natural abilities and chart them. The strength of the chain will be indicated by that link.
That said ... if Braden = Good, but everyone else = "meh" ... we have problems. But I don't see that scenario playing out. Improvement should be across the board. Some players more than others, but overall an upward slope.

That's an interesting take ... or rephrasing of the OP question -- "Which player's progress will serve as a proxy for the overall team development?"
Kalas on the OL is a good choice for that. It all starts there. If the OL does not get better, then all the other talk of QB, WR, FB development pretty much diminishes. Kalis is a good OL proxy ... because against expectations he's under-performed a bit.
(As opposed to, say, Mason Cole, who over-performed a bit.)

That's a fascinating article. I don't understand all the math, but I like the pretty pictures! :-)
Seriously, cool article. Thanks for the link.

I feel for the guy ... he had locked onto a dream and held onto it through all the coaching change turmoil. His tweet has a certain -- what? ... sad? poignant? -- feel to it.
The good news -- he's got a year to find another team where he can live his dream. I suspect he'll land on his feet. Best of luck to him.

Will miss the Gary Wright references, though.
It took me a moment to see what you were getting at there.
Then memories of that song from my 10th grade flooded into my brain.
I recall that was a favorite "handle" for people back in the CB craze of the mid-70's.

If the NFL just let guys out of it without fines then no one would ever show up.
There'll always be players who crave being in front of the camera or microphone. The few who don't like it won't be missed. Let Marshawn Lynch have his peace.

I've traveled to Brazil on business in the past. It's no myth ... the ladies there are quite pleasant to the eye.
Unless, like me, you walk into a door while admiring. I literally walked smack into a door. :-(

She (Giselle) isn't special at all to me personally.
Ditto for me.
That's not to say she's un-attractive ... just doesn't have that "it" for me like other models do.

I was having a down start to me day ... I was feeling uninspired ... then I saw this.
I am now motivated! Damn it, if that bird can overcome explosions and some stacked magazines, then so can I!
Hoorah. Damn the torpedoes ... full speed ahead!

I really hope Harbaugh buries this idea that a number is what a player should strive for.
One of the worst things to come out of the Hoke / Brandon years was this obsession with numbers -- "legacy" numbers, or the #1 or #2 jerseys, or whatever.
I wish Harbaugh would tell the players -- "The hell with the damn number ... go out there and make people talk about you, not the number on your jersey."
|3 days 3 hours ago||The "arm strength / wrist||
The "arm strength / wrist flick" thing is what struck me about Cardale Jones in those games to end last season ... he'd just flick his wrist and the damn ball would go 50 yards.
If Gentry is like that, then me likes. A lot.
|3 days 20 hours ago||If Malzone is a true||
If Malzone is a true competitor, then he is thinking Gentry will bring out the best in him.
Didn't Speight tweet something to that effect -- that Michigan was loading up and he (Speight) was eager to strap up and do battle?
It's going to be an interesting spring and fall camp. Can't wait to see how it all unfolds.

But minus Forcier/Robinson in which Forcier disqualified his own self ...
I still shake my head at the shame of how that unfolded.
We know Robinson was a tough-as-nails competitor. Can you imagine if Forcier had his head screwed on straight and the two of them pushed each other to get better and better? It could have been something really special.
|3 days 20 hours ago||I was thinking about that as||
I was thinking about that as well. One of the things I saw in the OSU / Oregon game was the Oregon tacklers trying to take Cardale Jones down by upper-body tackling him. It did not work. In the second half they finally started leg tackling.
Hopefully Gentry is something similar -- a beast to get down, and he's going to gain at least a few extra yards just because of his size.

These are the moments that make us pause and reflect.
It's like the day Ernie Harwell died. A part of my childhood -- wrapped up in warm summer nights listening to Harwell on my AM radio -- went with him.
As I get older I become more sensitive to these milestone moments. It's part of getting older, I assume. Still, these things are poignant reminders of chrerished memories.

I understand the sad part but don't see how the love of Michigan fits.
I do ... it's captured in this one sentence:
I've said that 90% of my formation occurred during camping trips to the western edge of the UP and in Section 10, Row 70, Seats 21 and 22.
That rather poignantly speaks to the bond between father and son during the shared love of camping, and the shared love of football.
Those are the kinds of memories we cherish.
Very nice story. Thanks for sharing.

But what came to mind first -- do we even care any more? Perhaps the polyurethane coatings make that old rule moot? I honestly don't know.

After watching what OSU did to Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon ... it made me wonder if we were seeing the "future" (next five to ten years) of college football -- a blend of spread and pro elements.
Meyer didn't invent the blend ... but he sure showed how it could be done successfully.
|6 days 3 hours ago||Street shoes?||
Somewhat OT question -- in the article Harbaugh is on the basketball court in street shoes! When I was a kid doing that was as heinous a crime as could be committed.
So, a question -- is the old rule about "no street shoes on the basketball court" obsolete now because we have more advanced surfacing technologies? Or was the rule way back then bunk? Or was Harbaugh granted immunity because ... HARBAUGH?

This "scandal" is so stupid ... it makes me wonder if it's all not some made-up PR stunt to gin up buzz and mouse-clicks.

Fielding Yost's train pulled into Ann Arbor, and the first to greet the new coach was Fred Jackson.
"Welcome to Meeechigan!" Fred said, as he shook Yost's hand.
"Meeechigan? I like the ring of that!" Yost said.
"Let's go meet this young fellow named Heston ... Willie Heston." Jackson said, as he led Yost by the arm off the platform and towards campus.
