Date Title Body
1 week 23 hours ago What a great antidote

to the malaise induced by the 2014 football schedule.

1 week 4 days ago I was really hoping for "exeunt"

instead of "exits." Oh well.

Good luck to them both.

2 weeks 1 hour ago Yes, but all other things being equal

it's better to start on a bad team than be a backup on a good team, if you want to play in the NFL.

2 weeks 1 hour ago Just to be clear:

Magnus, your evaluation is based 100% on his highlight reel(s)?

I ask because I assume the coaches focus more on camp performances, which allow them to see how the player performs against better competition, and to evaluate things like coachability, which can't be determined until you've actually worked with the player.

That's not to say that Magnus's evaluation isn't legitimate, or appreciated, just that it's based on a very particular data set.

2 weeks 2 days ago Brady wasn't, and isn't, much of a runner

but he did do this:

2 weeks 6 days ago As a resident of Toronto that would be nice

and I think that you're right about Toronto and Montreal being pretty good destinations. Two things: the SkyDome (now called the Rogers Centre) is a crap stadium, in my experience. Also, although Toronto and Montreal are nice cities I'm not sure that most people think of them as attractive destinations. I didn't until I had been to them.

3 weeks 20 hours ago I didn't say that, nor did I mean that.

Downvote away. I thought it was weird that the post was downvoted but I don't think it's a big deal either.

3 weeks 21 hours ago There's a difference between constructive criticism

and downvoting something, which is purely negative. I think that was mGrowOld's point.

3 weeks 21 hours ago I don't think that it is right

to conclude that "Alvarez is worth 21 points the week after a bye." That is one possible conclusion, but not the only one, right? It could be that Alvarez is a good coach with the bye and a bad coach without the bye, since what the Mathlete is measuring is the difference between bye and non-bye games. That is, the fact that Alvarez's teams did better after a bye compared to the expected performance doesn't mean that Alvarez is a great coach after bye weeks, just that he (or his team) is better (or perhaps less bad) after a bye week.

3 weeks 3 days ago Agreed.

Kill it.

3 weeks 3 days ago As pointed out on Deadspin

If Chris Broussard works on the Sabbath, then by his own definition he's also no Christian: http://www.biblestudytools.com/exodus/passage.aspx?q=exodus+31:14-15

EDIT: or indeed, why should he judge others? The Bible doesn't permit it, after all. Also this.

3 weeks 3 days ago Fortunately, or unfortunately, the B1G's recruiting is lagging

behind the SEC and the Florida schools in the ACC, at least according to ESPN. Notice that we're the only B1G school with more than one ESPN 150 recruit; below are all the schools with more than 1.

RK NCAA SCHOOL CONFERENCE COMMITS ESPN 150
1 Michigan Big Ten 7 6
2 LSU SEC 9 5
3 Florida SEC 9 4
4 Florida State ACC 8 4
5 Alabama SEC 5 3
6 Miami (FL) ACC 6 3
7 Texas A&M SEC 10 3
8 Georgia SEC 5 2
9 Tennessee SEC 10 2
10 Texas Big 12 14 2

3 weeks 5 days ago Footnote 1

It's official I am Carolina Panther!!

— Craig Roh (@CraigRoh88) April 27, 2013

3 weeks 5 days ago A bit more complicated than that, apparently

Caldwell said Robinson will be used at RB, slot WR and KR. #jaguars

— Ryan O'Halloran (@ryanohalloran) April 27, 2013

O'Halloran is a Jags beat writer for the Florida Times-Union; Caldwell is the Jags' general manager. Another interesting nugget:

Caldwell said "lack of speed" on roster jumped out at them when they got here.

— Ryan O'Halloran (@ryanohalloran) April 27, 2013

EDIT:

Caldwell -- using Robinson as Wildcat QB a "possibility." #jaguars

— Ryan O'Halloran (@ryanohalloran) April 27, 2013

3 weeks 5 days ago More confirmation

It's official, Campbell will be listed as an offensive lineman from the #Jets.

— Conor Orr (@ConorTOrr) April 27, 2013

Campbell said three teams brought him in for private workouts. One of them was at DT, two were at G. #nyj #jets

— Conor Orr (@ConorTOrr) April 27, 2013

This guy is the Jets beat writer for the Star-Ledger.

3 weeks 5 days ago Costello is the Jets beat writer for the NY Post

The Jets drafted Campbell with the intention of using him at guard.

— Brian Costello (@BrianCoz) April 27, 2013

3 weeks 5 days ago Here's an abbreviated version:

3 weeks 5 days ago Exciting!

and in gif form:

4 weeks 18 hours ago Eddins was a walk on DT

switched to TE, never saw game action, and is apparently no longer with the team (LINK).

4 weeks 18 hours ago Twitter apparently thinks so...

@aceanbender GO AWAY I WANT MORE COMMITS

— Austin Roberts (@Lofter4) April 25, 2013

@aceanbender never come back, don't ever come back.

— David S. (@youtoepea) April 25, 2013

AND

@aceanbender I want you to come back in Moe Ways than one ...

— Mike Wilson (@SpartansOrDie) April 25, 2013

4 weeks 18 hours ago Ace goes on vacation, and we get two commitments...

Vacation timing: impeccable.

— Ace Anbender (@AceAnbender) April 25, 2013

4 weeks 2 days ago Six commits,

all top-150 on ESPN. Tremendous.

4 weeks 6 days ago Aren't students given 4-year academic scholarships all the time?

I know that most of those aren't guaranteed in that they usually require the student to maintain a certain GPA, but "guaranteed" athletic multi-year scholarships have some strings attached. From the article in the Chronicle:

But multiyear contracts are not exactly a blank check. As a precaution, some institutions have added language to their agreements requiring players to meet a broader set of responsibilities to keep receiving their aid. Those stipulations, which in some cases include academic or behavior guidelines that are stricter than those for one-year awards, are intended to give institutions an exit clause should players not meet their basic obligations. Those moves have encouraged some institutions to make more multiyear offers.

EDIT: Ms. Plonsky has an annual salary of $363,348. That's more than the AD at Colorado-Boulder makes. (Source: http://www.texastribune.org/library/data/government-employee-salaries/the-university-of-texas-at-austin/christine-a-plonsky/242385/)

5 weeks 20 hours ago Bad, I think.

She was a very effective president. (Time magazine certainly thinks so). The Michigan Difference, which was mostly under her tenure as president, raised $3.2 billion (more than its $2.5 billion goal). But she can't serve forever, either:

Appointed in 2002, Coleman is the fourth-longest-serving president in U-M's history. James B. Angell served 38 years, followed by Alexander G. Ruthven at 22 and Harlan H. Hatcher at 16.

5 weeks 1 day ago Sure, but I suspect even there, there is a demographic factor

This, according to the US census, is the population density of the US by county:

You can see that those Southern counties are pretty dense, even though they may not have major metro areas. The population density drops off pretty quickly west of I-35, and what's more, you tend to have very low rural population densities until you get to the West Coast.

I suspect that the SEC's advantage is that football is far and away the most popular sport, so most of their athletes are playing football as opposed to other sports.

5 weeks 1 day ago Actually no

A quick search on Rivals' database yields the following states of origin for Boise State commits. Almost half of them are from California. More than half are from California + Texas. Only 15% are from Idaho.

5 weeks 1 day ago On geographic distribution

It is also amazing that other than Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Denver and west Texas there are essentially no FBS football recruits between the Pacific coast and I-35.

This basically maps onto population, doesn't it? If you compare your map of FBS recruits to population, as indicated by light production at night, you get a pretty decent fit:

5 weeks 3 days ago Magnus has already weighed in, FWIW:

Ann Arbor (MI) Gabriel Richard WR Blaise Stearns looks better than most walk-on wideouts - youtube.com/watch?v=Mal1Wr…

— TouchTheBanner (@TouchTheBanner) April 16, 2013

8 weeks 20 hours ago Here's a first effort

I'm sure there are MGoBloggerati who can do better, though (click to embiggen):

8 weeks 22 hours ago You devalued your own argument

by calling teachers "minions in an overpopulated academic department." Look, university professors work incredibly hard to give students a valuable education. Calling them minions is hitting below the belt.

I love college football and it brings me a lot of joy but I'd rather have a degree from a good university with a bad football team than one from a football factory that doesn't have good academics. The beauty of Michigan is that we can have both.
