| 1 week 23 hours ago | What a great antidote |
to the malaise induced by the 2014 football schedule. |

| 2 weeks 1 hour ago | Yes, but all other things being equal |
it's better to start on a bad team than be a backup on a good team, if you want to play in the NFL. |

| 2 weeks 1 hour ago | Just to be clear: |
Magnus, your evaluation is based 100% on his highlight reel(s)? I ask because I assume the coaches focus more on camp performances, which allow them to see how the player performs against better competition, and to evaluate things like coachability, which can't be determined until you've actually worked with the player. That's not to say that Magnus's evaluation isn't legitimate, or appreciated, just that it's based on a very particular data set. |

| 2 weeks 6 days ago | As a resident of Toronto that would be nice |
and I think that you're right about Toronto and Montreal being pretty good destinations. Two things: the SkyDome (now called the Rogers Centre) is a crap stadium, in my experience. Also, although Toronto and Montreal are nice cities I'm not sure that most people think of them as attractive destinations. I didn't until I had been to them. |

| 3 weeks 20 hours ago | I didn't say that, nor did I mean that. |
Downvote away. I thought it was weird that the post was downvoted but I don't think it's a big deal either. |

| 3 weeks 21 hours ago | There's a difference between constructive criticism |
and downvoting something, which is purely negative. I think that was mGrowOld's point. |

| 3 weeks 21 hours ago | I don't think that it is right |
to conclude that "Alvarez is worth 21 points the week after a bye." That is one possible conclusion, but not the only one, right? It could be that Alvarez is a good coach with the bye and a bad coach without the bye, since what the Mathlete is measuring is the difference between bye and non-bye games. That is, the fact that Alvarez's teams did better after a bye compared to the expected performance doesn't mean that Alvarez is a great coach after bye weeks, just that he (or his team) is better (or perhaps less bad) after a bye week. |

If Chris Broussard works on the Sabbath, then by his own definition he's also no Christian: http://www.biblestudytools.com/exodus/passage.aspx?q=exodus+31:14-15 EDIT: or indeed, why should he judge others? The Bible doesn't permit it, after all. Also this. |

| 3 weeks 3 days ago | Fortunately, or unfortunately, the B1G's recruiting is lagging |
behind the SEC and the Florida schools in the ACC, at least according to ESPN. Notice that we're the only B1G school with more than one ESPN 150 recruit; below are all the schools with more than 1.

O'Halloran is a Jags beat writer for the Florida Times-Union; Caldwell is the Jags' general manager. Another interesting nugget:

| 4 weeks 6 days ago | Aren't students given 4-year academic scholarships all the time? |
I know that most of those aren't guaranteed in that they usually require the student to maintain a certain GPA, but "guaranteed" athletic multi-year scholarships have some strings attached. From the article in the Chronicle:
EDIT: Ms. Plonsky has an annual salary of $363,348. That's more than the AD at Colorado-Boulder makes. (Source: http://www.texastribune.org/library/data/government-employee-salaries/the-university-of-texas-at-austin/christine-a-plonsky/242385/) |

| 5 weeks 20 hours ago | Bad, I think. |
She was a very effective president. (Time magazine certainly thinks so). The Michigan Difference, which was mostly under her tenure as president, raised $3.2 billion (more than its $2.5 billion goal). But she can't serve forever, either:

| 5 weeks 1 day ago | Sure, but I suspect even there, there is a demographic factor |
This, according to the US census, is the population density of the US by county: You can see that those Southern counties are pretty dense, even though they may not have major metro areas. The population density drops off pretty quickly west of I-35, and what's more, you tend to have very low rural population densities until you get to the West Coast. I suspect that the SEC's advantage is that football is far and away the most popular sport, so most of their athletes are playing football as opposed to other sports. |

| 5 weeks 1 day ago | Actually no |
A quick search on Rivals' database yields the following states of origin for Boise State commits. Almost half of them are from California. More than half are from California + Texas. Only 15% are from Idaho. |

| 5 weeks 1 day ago | On geographic distribution |
This basically maps onto population, doesn't it? If you compare your map of FBS recruits to population, as indicated by light production at night, you get a pretty decent fit:

| 8 weeks 22 hours ago | You devalued your own argument |
by calling teachers "minions in an overpopulated academic department." Look, university professors work incredibly hard to give students a valuable education. Calling them minions is hitting below the belt. I love college football and it brings me a lot of joy but I'd rather have a degree from a good university with a bad football team than one from a football factory that doesn't have good academics. The beauty of Michigan is that we can have both. |
