1 week 35 min ago Oops -- thanks for pointing it out.

.

1 week 3 hours ago What a great antidote

to the malaise induced by the 2014 football schedule.

1 week 3 days ago I was really hoping for "exeunt"

instead of "exits." Oh well.

Good luck to them both.

1 week 6 days ago Yes, but all other things being equal

it's better to start on a bad team than be a backup on a good team, if you want to play in the NFL.

1 week 6 days ago Just to be clear:

Magnus, your evaluation is based 100% on his highlight reel(s)?

I ask because I assume the coaches focus more on camp performances, which allow them to see how the player performs against better competition, and to evaluate things like coachability, which can't be determined until you've actually worked with the player.

That's not to say that Magnus's evaluation isn't legitimate, or appreciated, just that it's based on a very particular data set.

2 weeks 2 days ago Brady wasn't, and isn't, much of a runner

but he did do this:

2 weeks 6 days ago As a resident of Toronto that would be nice

and I think that you're right about Toronto and Montreal being pretty good destinations. Two things: the SkyDome (now called the Rogers Centre) is a crap stadium, in my experience. Also, although Toronto and Montreal are nice cities I'm not sure that most people think of them as attractive destinations. I didn't until I had been to them.

3 weeks 20 min ago I didn't say that, nor did I mean that.

Downvote away. I thought it was weird that the post was downvoted but I don't think it's a big deal either.

3 weeks 1 hour ago There's a difference between constructive criticism

and downvoting something, which is purely negative. I think that was mGrowOld's point.

3 weeks 1 hour ago I don't think that it is right

to conclude that "Alvarez is worth 21 points the week after a bye." That is one possible conclusion, but not the only one, right? It could be that Alvarez is a good coach with the bye and a bad coach without the bye, since what the Mathlete is measuring is the difference between bye and non-bye games. That is, the fact that Alvarez's teams did better after a bye compared to the expected performance doesn't mean that Alvarez is a great coach after bye weeks, just that he (or his team) is better (or perhaps less bad) after a bye week.

3 weeks 2 days ago Agreed.

Kill it.

3 weeks 2 days ago As pointed out on Deadspin

If Chris Broussard works on the Sabbath, then by his own definition he's also no Christian: http://www.biblestudytools.com/exodus/passage.aspx?q=exodus+31:14-15

EDIT: or indeed, why should he judge others? The Bible doesn't permit it, after all. Also this.

3 weeks 3 days ago Fortunately, or unfortunately, the B1G's recruiting is lagging

behind the SEC and the Florida schools in the ACC, at least according to ESPN. Notice that we're the only B1G school with more than one ESPN 150 recruit; below are all the schools with more than 1.

RK NCAA SCHOOL CONFERENCE COMMITS ESPN 150
1 Michigan Big Ten 7 6
2 LSU SEC 9 5
3 Florida SEC 9 4
4 Florida State ACC 8 4
5 Alabama SEC 5 3
6 Miami (FL) ACC 6 3
7 Texas A&M SEC 10 3
8 Georgia SEC 5 2
9 Tennessee SEC 10 2
10 Texas Big 12 14 2

3 weeks 4 days ago A bit more complicated than that, apparently

Caldwell said Robinson will be used at RB, slot WR and KR. #jaguars

— Ryan O'Halloran (@ryanohalloran) April 27, 2013

O'Halloran is a Jags beat writer for the Florida Times-Union; Caldwell is the Jags' general manager. Another interesting nugget:

Caldwell said "lack of speed" on roster jumped out at them when they got here.

Caldwell -- using Robinson as Wildcat QB a "possibility." #jaguars

4 weeks 6 days ago Aren't students given 4-year academic scholarships all the time?

I know that most of those aren't guaranteed in that they usually require the student to maintain a certain GPA, but "guaranteed" athletic multi-year scholarships have some strings attached. From the article in the Chronicle:

But multiyear contracts are not exactly a blank check. As a precaution, some institutions have added language to their agreements requiring players to meet a broader set of responsibilities to keep receiving their aid. Those stipulations, which in some cases include academic or behavior guidelines that are stricter than those for one-year awards, are intended to give institutions an exit clause should players not meet their basic obligations. Those moves have encouraged some institutions to make more multiyear offers.

EDIT: Ms. Plonsky has an annual salary of $363,348. That's more than the AD at Colorado-Boulder makes. (Source: http://www.texastribune.org/library/data/government-employee-salaries/the-university-of-texas-at-austin/christine-a-plonsky/242385/)

5 weeks 29 min ago Bad, I think.

She was a very effective president. (Time magazine certainly thinks so). The Michigan Difference, which was mostly under her tenure as president, raised $3.2 billion (more than its $2.5 billion goal). But she can't serve forever, either:

Appointed in 2002, Coleman is the fourth-longest-serving president in U-M's history. James B. Angell served 38 years, followed by Alexander G. Ruthven at 22 and Harlan H. Hatcher at 16.

5 weeks 1 day ago Sure, but I suspect even there, there is a demographic factor

This, according to the US census, is the population density of the US by county:

You can see that those Southern counties are pretty dense, even though they may not have major metro areas. The population density drops off pretty quickly west of I-35, and what's more, you tend to have very low rural population densities until you get to the West Coast.

I suspect that the SEC's advantage is that football is far and away the most popular sport, so most of their athletes are playing football as opposed to other sports.

5 weeks 1 day ago Actually no

A quick search on Rivals' database yields the following states of origin for Boise State commits. Almost half of them are from California. More than half are from California + Texas. Only 15% are from Idaho.

5 weeks 1 day ago On geographic distribution

It is also amazing that other than Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Denver and west Texas there are essentially no FBS football recruits between the Pacific coast and I-35.

This basically maps onto population, doesn't it? If you compare your map of FBS recruits to population, as indicated by light production at night, you get a pretty decent fit:

Ann Arbor (MI) Gabriel Richard WR Blaise Stearns looks better than most walk-on wideouts - youtube.com/watch?v=Mal1Wr…

8 weeks 23 min ago Here's a first effort

I'm sure there are MGoBloggerati who can do better, though (click to embiggen):

8 weeks 2 hours ago You devalued your own argument

by calling teachers "minions in an overpopulated academic department." Look, university professors work incredibly hard to give students a valuable education. Calling them minions is hitting below the belt.

I love college football and it brings me a lot of joy but I'd rather have a degree from a good university with a bad football team than one from a football factory that doesn't have good academics. The beauty of Michigan is that we can have both.

8 weeks 1 day ago I'm pretty sure there was some pistol

on the first spring practice video. Check it out (starting at 3:50):

8 weeks 5 days ago I agree, but it's also one of the stupidest

Total slop.

8 weeks 6 days ago This is how tough Canadians are

Doctors in Canada have removed a knife blade from a man's back more than three years after he was stabbed in a fight.

Billy McNeely of the Northwest Territories told local media he had suffered itching and minor pain but did not know the blade was still embedded.

Happy, Blue in Yarmouth?

8 weeks 6 days ago Don't let yourself get baited like that

As an American living in Canada I hear a lot of stupid anti-American comments. Just let it slide. Fools will be fools.

Plus, I don't think Michael Scarn meant anything by it. Just a friendly jab.

10 weeks 2 days ago I remember those two losses to Indiana in 1993 hurt bad

Webber blocked by Alan Henderson in the closing seconds at Crisler, and James Voskuil (I think) missed a wide open three as the game ended at Assembly Hall. Ugh.

11 weeks 51 min ago There will also be pressure to eject players

when there is an injury, I think.

I agree that a straight ejection is problematic (as opposed, say, to giving a player a warning before ejecting him if he repeats the violation). I would guess that the NCAA's logic is that although the rule will result in some questionable calls and suboptimal results in important (and not-so-important) games, the rule will change the culture of the game in the long run. (To be clear: I'm not saying that I approve of this logic).

11 weeks 2 hours ago Oops!

My mistake:

In other action, the oversight panel denied the Football Rules Committee’s proposal to require an institution’s jersey or pant color to be different from the field of play, citing concerns that it did not enhance the image of the game.

I was working quickly and I knew that the rule had been proposed, but I missed the keyword (denied).

11 weeks 2 hours ago Uniformz

Also: “Jerseys must have clearly visible, permanent Arabic numerals measuring at least 8 and 10 inches in height front and back, respectively, and be of one solid color that itself is clearly in distinct contrast with the color of the jersey, irrespective of any border around the number.”

Would this have affected our Outback bowl unis, I wonder? That would be OK with me.

11 weeks 18 hours ago I think that there are many such studies,

but because those sports are not as popular as football, and not as obviously physical, those studies are not as well publicized. For instance, look at the variety of studies in this NIH database: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/?term=head+trauma+sports

11 weeks 5 days ago Fight the power.

14 weeks 15 hours ago Not exactly, apparently

Previously, the position of the player at the snap changed whether or not the player could block below the waist legally.

...Is what the NCAA article (link) says.

Beginning in the 2011 season, these were the rules:

Blocking below the waist is illegal except on scrimmage plays in the following instances:

• Wide receivers more than seven yards from the center at the snap of the ball can block below the waist only against a player facing him or toward the nearest sideline.

• Running backs/receivers in the backfield and outside the tackle box (the area five yards on either side of the center) or players in motion can block below the waist only on players facing them or toward the nearest sideline.

Players on the line of scrimmage within seven yards of the center are still allowed to block below the waist anywhere on the field.

14 weeks 1 day ago On my reading of the rule unintentional contact is legal

It's intentional contact (which is what "initiating contact" and "targeting" imply to me) to the head with the shoulder pad or forearm which is illegal. But that's the problem; at high speeds it is often difficult to impossible to determine whether it's intentional targeting or unintentional contact.

14 weeks 1 day ago Wow Ian Darke brings it

14 weeks 2 days ago Most of those words are nouns

so if we just change smart to 'smarts' or 'intelligence' and physical to 'physicality' and 'dependable' to 'dependability' then it's all good.

14 weeks 2 days ago An addendum:

This is a pretty accurate read on what I saw and heard in ND:

In North Dakota, people went to the polls on June 12 to vote whether to retire the “Fighting Sioux” mascot. However that vote turns out, it may be a temporary decision. A group called the Committee for Understanding and Respect has been circulating petitions for a second referendum that would change the state constitution to declare the University of North Dakota (UND) forever be known as the Fighting Sioux. In years past, supporters of this mascot have produced t-shirts with what appears to be an Indian having sex with a buffalo. Nothing helps make your point like a little sexual marginalization.

All of this requires a bit of a history lesson. In the year 2000, the board of regents at UND voted to retire the offensive mascot. In stepped their biggest alumnus, financially speaking, Ralph Englestad. Mr. Englestad, who had just donated 35 million dollars to build a new hockey arena, immediately fired off a letter to the University president stating he’d pull all funding from the school forever. In short order, the school reversed its stand on the mascot. Money talks, and sometimes it apparently screams and hollers.

Who is, or was Ralph Englestad you ask? (He passed away in 2002) He was a Las Vegas casino owner who collected German, and specifically Hitler memorabilia. He was fond of throwing Adolph Hitler birthday parties. He had a painting of himself in a Gestapo uniform with “Love, Adolph” written in the corner. Yes, this drips with gargantuan amounts of pure unadulterated irony. And yet, it does follow a pattern if you care to connect the dots.

14 weeks 2 days ago You'd think so

but actually it's not. Racism against Native Americans is pretty rampant in North Dakota and among fans of the Fighting Sioux. I don't get it, myself, but it's pretty blatant. (BTW: I've been up there, and I have two friends who are faculty and staff at UND).

[EDIT: for clarification, I'm responding to the comment by evenyoubrutus]

14 weeks 2 days ago Right, but then the problem is OOC

as Dave Brandon put it in his interview at 11 Warriors:

If we were to go to 10 conference games, which some people are suggesting with 14 teams and, certainly, there is merit to that, you avoid the five and four imbalance.

But now you’ve only got the flexibility of scheduling two non-conference games and if you want to play seven home games both of them have to be at home. When you do that, you really put us in a position where we really can’t go on the road to play a big BCS opponent because they aren’t going to schedule you on a one-and-done. They’re going to want to play a home-and-home.

So the consequences of going to 10, when overlaid with the fact that you have to play seven home games, really puts Gene and me in a position where we won’t be traveling to play non-conference away games. I, personally, am concerned about that. Part of what our fans and college football fans want to see are these great intersectional rivalries that can develop or just good matchups.

15 weeks 4 hours ago SF busted out the inverted veer in the Atlanta game.

which was our base running play with Denard, so there is something to build on there. More importantly, what Chris Brown from Smart Football points out with respect to SF, is that

The read option is actually just something the 49ers have grafted onto their existing running plays. It’s a concept that can be incorporated into almost any existing blocking scheme. Harbaugh and Roman have chosen to blend old-school ideas with the new-school read option, and it’s come with tremendous success.

Brown points out in the same article that SF's fullback also makes a read -- if the DE crashes, he lets him go and blocks the scraping linebacker. If the DE stays home, then the fullback blocks him. If the DE goes for the QB, then the fullback blocks the nearest linebacker.

LOIs can't be signed and transmitted to universities until SIgning Day. From the NCAA guide:

Prospective student-athletes who will participate in football are prohibited from signing an NLI during the early signing period (November). A student who signs an NLI during the early period in a sport other than football will be ineligible for practice and competition in the sport of football during the student’s first year of enrollment at an NLI member institution, and shall forfeit one season of competition in the sport of football.

EDIT: more specifically, student-athletes are explicitly told by the NCAA website that "if you sign an NLI outside the appropriate signing period, the NLI shall be considered invalid."

EDIT: Duh. Signing Day approaches quickly. My mistake. This flu has apparently eaten into my brain.

O'Brien was quick to point out that the last three seasons of NC State football were among the winningest in program history, but the swift move from athletic director Debbie Yow suggests the Wolfpack want to be competing for ACC championships.

That seems unlikely, unless the ACC is gutted further...

The study does not claim to have valid results for all kinds of programs. Specifically, they claim that:

We find that for particularly poorly performing teams, coach replacements have little effect on team performance as measured against comparable teams that did not replace their coach. However, for teams with middling records—that is, teams where entry conditions for a new coach appear to be more favorable—replacing the head coach appears to result in worse performance over subsequent years than comparable teams who retained their coach.

it sounds like he was answering a question about whether he was an NFL prospect, and he is quoted as responding, "I couldn't care less. That's what you guys are paid to write about and talk about." I presume he then said, "I'm paid to win games."

So my interpretation is that he mistakenly used the same construction to contrast his role with that of reporters. It's an understandable mistake. Still funny, though, especially his attempt to recover from the gaffe.

One could add that Kovacs played on some lousy defenses, too; if those units had been better he would have been in the enviable position of congratulating a linebacker teammate for making the tackle, depressing his numbers.

On the other hand, Kovacs has only played in two post-season games in his career. And you'll notice that there's nobody on that list since Victor Hobson.

The main thing, though, is that Kovacs has been a great thing for Michigan, a bright spot during some dark years, especially for the defense, and he deserves all the recognition for it.

People on the blog are allowed to draw their own opinions about the relative proportion of blame for poor performances. So are you. As I tell my students: argue, don't assert.

34 weeks 2 days ago And here's video confirmation of that fact:

34 weeks 2 days ago The other big issue is player safety

There are a ton of cheapshots being taken because players are not afraid of, and do not respect, the refs. There are a lot of fights breaking out for the same reasons. Players are frustrated and angry at the way the refs are calling the plays. Someone is going to get hurt and it will be -- at least in part -- the fault of the league for inproperly enforcing rules designed to protect player safety.

34 weeks 2 days ago Which is why the NCAA should start airing Sunday games

34 weeks 3 days ago How can you know that?

It sounded to me like he meant it. "I need to do a better job at coaching the game of football" doesn't sound like coachspeak to me. In any case, my point was that I agreed with him, regardless of whether it's coachspeak or not.

I also think Jamie is correct when he says

Denard sucked. Coaches also did dumb things. It's not 'all the fault' rests here deal, despite how argument is playing out on@mgoblog

34 weeks 3 days ago Okay, but it's also the coaches' job

to put their players in a position to succeed. Hoke was right when he said in the postgame conference that the players and the coaches have to do a better job. Perhaps Brian should have written "Blaming it entirely (or primarily) on execution is horseshit."

35 weeks 2 days ago OK, but you are in agreement with BWS then

Who says that

(1) At times last year (against Ohio) they blocked the player that other spreads would option (and against Bama)

(2) Against UMass, they left the DE unblocked and optioned him

(3) Hopefully, we will see more of (2) than of (1).

35 weeks 2 days ago This is the clearest explanation I've found:

http://smartfootball.com/defending-spread/tcus-inverted-veer-option

In the typical veer play from a spread set, the line blocks down and double-teams the defensive linemen on up to the linebackers. They leave the defensive end unblocked (except when they run midline veer, in which case it is a defensive tackle) and read that man. If he steps down for the runningback, the QB just gives the ball and steps around him. It is just the old first-read of the triple option adapted for spread sets.

In the inverted veer:

The runningback runs a sweep or outside zone action laterally. If the defensive end takes him, then the quarterback shoots up inside the defensive end. If the defensive end sits for the QB, the runner should be able to hit the corner. Remember, the defensive end is often the hardest guy to block, and especially so when you want to “reach” him to seal the corner.

36 weeks 34 min ago The block in the back against Taylor wasn't illegal

-- I think. (I'm no expert).

Per the NCAA rules committee:

Blocking Zone

ARTICLE 6. a. The blocking zone is a rectangle centered on the snapper and extending five yards laterally and three yards longitudinally in each direction.

b.  The blocking zone disintegrates when the ball leaves the zone.

RATIONALE:  Defines the area where players are allowed to clip (9-1-2-d) and block in the back (9-3-3-c).  No change from the current rule.

EDIT: Here is the rule from the NCAA rulebook (section 3, article 3, b 2 c 1):

1. Offensive players who are on the line of scrimmage at the snap within the blocking zone (Rule 2-3-6) may legally block in the back in the blocking zone, subject to the following restrictions:

(a) A player on the line of scrimmage within this blocking zone may not leave the zone and return and legally block in the back.

(b) The blocking zone disintegrates when the ball leaves the zone (Rule 2-3-6).

The whole thing in playing that kind of offense, if you don’t squeeze the down block, he’ll block your linebacker all day, so we felt that it was important to tighten our guys down and to squeeze it, and they went to what they do. They started zoning us so they got to the outside. Again, those are the things you’re touching on that I should have done quicker of saying, okay, let’s loosen these guys and let’s see if the fullback can beat us.

The video following the "What was Fitz supposed to do?" is the Funchess jump ball TD.

Listen, ND. I was raised Catholic, too. Halfway in counts.

36 weeks 2 days ago It's not completely certain that it's a tear

Hope said the initial MRI reading revealed “there was some damage to the ACL, a potential tear if you will, but still not 100 percent sure of the final evaluation of it."

Marve, a sixth-year senior, has suffered two ACL injuries to the same knee, most recently in 2010.

“Anytime you’ve had a couple of ACL surgeries, your MRI can be a little muddy to read anyway,” Hope said. “The extent of it we’re not exactly sure yet. Regardless of the extent of the injury, he would have a chance to come back and play this season. We have our fingers crossed it’s not as serious as it has been in the past and he can still come back and play this season.”

Hope said he saw Marve earlier Monday and “he was walking OK.”

36 weeks 4 days ago LOL Martinez

throwing an Effis pitch into the UCLA secondary.

EDIT: Off his back foot, too. Just awful.

36 weeks 4 days ago Yeah, but his OL is playing awful

It would help if they could block some.

Also, Nebraska clearly has a problem tackling Johnathan Franklin. They bounce off him like defensive players in Tecmo Bowl. Maybe Franklin is in "excellent."

36 weeks 4 days ago I love it when Taylor Martinez

flips the ball in desperation.  What on earth does he think he is doing?

PS Charles Davis is awful.

36 weeks 4 days ago These announcers on FOX are awful

and seem not to understand the basics of what is happening. (Gus Johnson and Charles Davis). For example, Nebraska ran a triple option on 3rd and short, and Martinez gave to the FB when he should have kept. Charles Davis started going on and on about how it's not good to give the ball to the FB on short yardage because he can't get enough momentum... as if the play was designed to go to the FB instead of being an option.

36 weeks 4 days ago It's also a bit misleading...

because the kneels in the victory formation count as "team rushes", so they count against the total yardage figure but not Denard's rushing stats. Denard/the team took three knees for -11 yards. And then Toussaint had 8 rushes for 7 yards. So that accounts for the bizarre 101% figure. Still, it shows how much we rely on him for offensive production.

36 weeks 4 days ago My friend wanted the Lions to run the triple option

with Barry Sanders and Cory Schlesinger. They'd have had to draft or pick up like 5 option QBs from college, but he was convinced it would have been awesome.

36 weeks 4 days ago Denard accounted for 101% of our offensive yardage

Denard: 426 total yards (218 rushing, 208 passing)

Michigan (team): 422 total yards

36 weeks 4 days ago Ohio is eligible to win the leaders division

but not to play in the B1G championship game (or any postseason game).

36 weeks 6 days ago Fair enough

I didn't think that Brian meant that our defense is (absolutely) bad, but that there are concerns. Mattison has concerns, too.

Hoke has also said in the past that every year is a new year, and that the coaches can't assume that the players will not regress, that fundamentals need to be coached even to players who had mastered them in the past. So there is that.

But agreed that the Alabama game is just one game. On the other hand, let's hope that our defense can play better than that. Certainly mattison believes they can.

36 weeks 6 days ago Why don't you listen to what Mattison said at his presser?

Alabama was a very good football team, but Alabama did not have the success they had solely because they were bigger, faster, or stronger. They had it because we didn’t play technique and we didn’t tackle.

As a coach I’ll be dead honest with you. [Air Force] is an offense that put 500 yards rushing -- I don’t care who you’re playing, getting 500 yards is a lot of yards. Playing a wishbone first of all makes you be unbelievably sound in technique and assignment. If you slip up one time it can be a big play. So that’s a concern.

36 weeks 6 days ago Pre-snap read is also in love with Michigan State

to an extent that seems really bizarre. Last week you would have thought that they had beaten a vintage BCS-busting Boise State team instead of the team that's been totally gutted and retooled.

36 weeks 6 days ago Silverberry Mouhon!

You know that they're itching to say "Leviticus Payne".

36 weeks 6 days ago According to Rivals he's the backup strong safety

but he's in the game. He almost sacked Sunseri just now, but Sunseri flipped the ball to Graham.

36 weeks 6 days ago Yep, Jarred Holley I think

He was 1st team Big East last year. According to Scout we offered him.

36 weeks 6 days ago Was Tony Gibson teaching Pitt's defensive line

how to tackle? Good lord.

37 weeks 23 hours ago I think you might be too literal-minded

The comments in the "Picture Pages" post were pretty virulent in their criticism of a very limited claim that Brian made about the zone read and RR's part in its development.

37 weeks 1 day ago Jamil Cooks is off the Air Force team

As reported here: http://www.gazette.com/sports/players-142701-air-five.html

37 weeks 1 day ago Thanks for reminding me about Witten

running through the Michigan defense. Ugh. That game was awful, and that Tennessee team should have been in the NC game, if only they hadn't lost to LSU in the SEC championship game.

37 weeks 1 day ago Ugh. Really?

Brian, like the rest of us, is doing his best to understand the plays and why they might not have worked. None of us claims to be authorities. (Actually, those who do make some kind of claim, like Magnus, are sometimes mocked and dismissed, unfairly, I think).

So what else should we do? Blindly believe in the perfection of Borges so long as he is our OC?

I'm interested in football, and how it works. It's why I read Smart Football and MGoBlog and BWS. If you don't agree with Brian or the two Chrises, that's fine, but I don't think it's appropriate to mock them for making an effort to appreciate and understand the complexity of the game.

37 weeks 2 days ago Also...

We did not outscheme ourselves because, even if we ran things differently, THERE WAS NO WINNING this game with the current state of our program.

How can this possibly follow? If Michigan had run the Maryland-I the whole game and ran ISO plays, would you say that we didn't outscheme ourselves because the game was lost? If we had punted on each and every 1st down, would you still claim that it didn't matter because we were going to lose no matter what?

This seems like a much more reasonable position:

RT @Alex_MnB: Not to say that Michigan's gameplan was great, but Alabama would have still dominated defensively regardless.

37 weeks 2 days ago You're entitled to your view, of course

But I don't see much of substance in this post. I mean, isn't Brian entitled to think (if he even does) that a run-first spread (whether it's RR's or Chip Kelly's) is the tactically best? And isn't he entitled to think that it is the best with respect to Denard's skill set? You obviously disagree but I don't see you advancing any compelling argument. In fact, I see the opposite: you assert what you need to prove, namely that

the biased thought process leads to unfair or incorrect assumptions.

37 weeks 3 days ago Brian, the direct download links to the season preview

not 4.1.

37 weeks 3 days ago Do you really not understand why?

I didn't think we had a chance in this game but it still hurts to watch the team get totally dominated and manhandled in every single possible way.

I guess different people just react differently... there are those for whom "Fever Pitch" (the book, not the movies) makes perfect sense, and those for whom it doesn't. But it surprises me that one side can't understand why the other side reacts the way that it does...

37 weeks 3 days ago Yeah, it would be awesome to read a blog penned by someone

who cares LESS about Michigan and Michigan football.

Frustration is the name of the game when you're a Michigan fan -- sky-high expectations usually followed by disappointment. Then again, I was a student from 1993-1997, so every year we ended the year ranked lower than our preseason ranking (I graduated in May 1997, so before the NC year).

37 weeks 4 days ago Brandon scheduled it
  1. Brandon became AD in January 2010 (per Michigan Daily.)
  2. Michigan-Alabama announced October 2010 (mgoblog), with rumors in August)

37 weeks 6 days ago UMass did have at least one nice defensive play, though

37 weeks 6 days ago UMass had 59 yards of total offense

on 47 plays against UConn. Yes, that's 1.255 yards per play. Here's a link to the box score.

38 weeks 1 day ago Is it a good point?

I mean, Illinois, Purdue, Iowa and Minnesota return their starters at QB, Northwestern sort of does, and Notre Dame and Michigan State are our rivals. If he's a fanatic he should at least remember the returning starters.

38 weeks 1 day ago He does say that he would have accepted

Tom Brady, Jim Harbaugh, Elvis Grbac, and Scramble McScrambleson. Apparently 'ROLL TIDE' was the most common answer.

38 weeks 3 days ago McCray had a nice play there

he recognized the screen, beat the block, and was held. He couldn't make the tackle, but that was in part because the offensive lineman was holding him.

... since he might miss the Michigan game.

38 weeks 6 days ago if he can learn to block like Vincent Smith

that would definitely increase his playing time and upside.

39 weeks 23 hours ago That's what I thought

but actually you can see that the text of the person in the red shirt behind Obama reads correctly ("1878"):

39 weeks 1 day ago I was thinking average yards per play

as total yards vary quite a bit depending on offensive time of possession, etc.

39 weeks 1 day ago That's neat

We could also play at Wesleyan College, which has the oldest continuously used football field in the US... and set up a double-header against Wesleyan College to avenge our 6-14 loss to them in 1883!

Space would be... limited. Capacity is 5000.

41 weeks 1 day ago Agreed but I thought that Magnus' point was that

he couldn't understand the lukewarm expectations for Demens' senior year, and that based on his performance last year, we should be excited about Demens this coming year. (Not to start a Demens v. Harris comparison per se).

On the other hand, how well Demens can play this year is probably the most dependent on  how well the defensive line plays...

42 weeks 5 days ago Yes, please!

After I read Three and Out I wanted to buy Twin City socks but I couldn't figure out which specific ones the football team used.

43 weeks 1 day ago Plus, what is political about a PR failure?

That's what we're commenting on, not the views of (the president of) Chick-Fil-A.

43 weeks 2 days ago Agreed that institutional control was the main issue,

or should have been. The Freeh report (chapter 10) makes it clear that Penn State failing abysmally at maintaining oversight of the football program and compliance (with, e.g., the Clery Act).

43 weeks 4 days ago Yes, of course

but if the standard for punishing a university was that "the whole University" knew about a crime and covered it up, then you'd never punish any university.

Nobody is pretending that everyone at PSU knew about this. But many more people are at fault than just the 4 guys at the top.

Here are the salient facts:

  1. The coach knew.
  2. The AD knew.
  3. The president of the University knew.
  4. A senior VP knew.
  5. The Board of Trustees "did not perform its oversight duties" (Freeh report, p. 15) and failed "to make reasonable inquiry" (p. 16) into allegations against Sandusky.
  6. The football program didn't fully participate in some University programs (including compliance with the Clery Act, p. 17)
  7. The University had no centralized office to oversee institutional compliance (Freeh report, p. 31)

And there is much more in the Freeh report. Read chapter 10 and look at how many substantial recommendations the report makes. Penn State FAILED as an institution.

43 weeks 4 days ago Sure. I blame Penn St as an institution

Institutions have rules and regulations, and mechanisms to monitor and enforce them, in order to prevent executives and other power-brokers, no matter how honest and rule-abiding they may seem, from wrong-doing. Penn State allowed the rules and the mechanisms to lapse on the theory that Joe was honest and in control. So although I agree with you that in some respects this is unique to Joe Pa -- Penn State will obviously never trust any other coach in the same way now that this has happened -- I do think that it is a University problem. The leadership of the Athletic Department and the University decided to gamble on Joe Pa, and they lost.

The NCAA, it seems to me, is interested in punishing institutions. Hence sanctions are designed to punish the institution rather than individuals (see, e.g., USC). In that respect, punishing Penn St as an institution for institutional failings makes a lot of sense.

43 weeks 4 days ago Seems the "death penalty" is not going to happen

Per ESPN's Joe Schad:

NCAA president Mark Emmert has decided to punish Penn State with severe penalties likely to include a significant loss of scholarships and loss of multiple bowls, a source close to the decision told ESPN's Joe Schad on Sunday morning.

But Penn State will not receive the so-called "death penalty" that would have suspended the program for at least one year, the source said.

The penalties, however, are considered to be so harsh that the death penalty may have been preferable, the source said.
