Looks a bit like Jason Avant

Looks a bit like Jason Avant to me. Anybody else think so? I heard he was at the alumni tailgate prior to the game.

Surprise, surprise

If there is someone on the staff who is supposed to be in contact with admissions and know which guys are borderline and which are no way—and I honestly don't know if there is one—then it falls on that person. If there isn't then there should be, and I expect that there will be.

There is someone.  It's Brad Labadie.

Admissions did sit down with

Admissions did sit down with RR and go over parameters when he was hired. They also do it every year with all of the sport's coaches.

Instead of going by the

Instead of going by the composite, the NCAA adds up your sections.  So a 10 on English, 9 on Math, 9 in Science, and 9 in Reading gets you to 37.  They also allow you to pick your best subscores from different test dates.  You could take your English from your March ACT, your math from your June ACT, etc.  Same for SAT.

Right

And on that sliding scale, it's possible to be eligible with a 37 ACT (9.25) or 400 SAT, just as I said.  Yes, it requires a high GPA, but it's still ridiculous that you can conceivably get a 400 SAT and be declared eligible by NCAA standards.

NCAA standards /= Admission

You can be eligible by NCAA standards with a 9 ACT or 400 SAT.  No way that should get you admitted to U-M.  I'm glad they have admission standards beyond the bare minimum.

Very true

Considering the median gpa and ACT at U-M are 3.7-4.0 and 28-32, I think that's a very fair statement.

What was Admissions supposed

What was Admissions supposed to be doing since February?  They're not going to deny a student that never submitted an application to their office.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe admissions is at all involved in the LOI process.  Football makes arrangement with their athletic compliance office to send them out.  As long as the athletic department has a copy of a transcript and test score, they send it out.  No academic evaluation is done by the compliance office.  The recruit signs it and returns it to compliance and the conference/NCAA.  Once it's signed and returned, the player is officially committed to the university pending admission.  Admissions doesn't let the university accept the LOI or have anything to do with its approval.

Admissions didn't release him from his LOI.  The athletic department sends that notice.
