No idea personally if Gentry had any clue about this beforehand or not, or even if this would have affected his decision one way or the other if it did. Just offering an opinion on an admittedly sore topic.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Not blind-sided at all||
But if the transfer was in the works already, I don't see why it couldn't have been announced on or before Signing Day instead of the day after. Maybe it wasn't in the works for a while, but that was what I had been reading/hearing.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||Agree 100% two different situations.||
And I'd say this is more akin to the UCLA DC loss than Michigan, but I'm just trying to look at all these things under the relatively same filter. Not just a Michigan-fan perspective. I tend to agree with what Sam has said about Mikey at this point that he was looking for something to happen at Michigan or OSU to point to and give a reason for his choice. The scrutiny of a flip that late in the process would be pretty high.
|3 weeks 4 days ago||I view it as part of the game in recruiting.||
Similar to signing 2 QBs to a class on Signing day and then announcing a QB transfer the very next day. Obviously not apples to apples, but worth noting that things like that happen across the country, not just at schools we don't like.
|4 weeks 8 hours ago||An excellent point||
So many people just say "6-4 PF!" and yes of course height is important for that position, but you can take advantage of mismatches on offense just like the other team can take advantage of mismatches against you. When you are offensively focused, it's a nice tool in your kit.

for the biggest home game of the season does not mean that the full roster (minus LeVert and Wilson) will be "healthy" for the game. Still, if we can get two halves out of Doyle, that would be a great improvement.
EDIT: Allow me to add that I'm still irrationally optimistic about tomorrow's game.
|5 weeks 6 days ago||This team feels more like a typical Beilein team||
And I say that from his time at WVU. His system was always built around seniors knowing the system better than their opponents could scout it and using it to their advantage. We lost that the last few years because we had such good talent (a preferable situation), but we have a lot to look forward to with this team. I say that both for development the rest of this season and looking ahead a few seasons.
I have to agree, the rutgers game was somehow enjoyable when you unburden expectaions from the equation.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||Would imply to me that Manning||
Did not get the job. And Zordich is a second DB coach.
|7 weeks 16 hours ago||True statement.||
Even if Caris Leaves, if Michigan somehow lands Brown, that would be an immediate replacement impact player that would still lead to us likely having a better season.

pretty cool. And every time he puts his hand on his hat like that, I know he's shouting "RHINO!" at the top of his lungs.

If you like Bulliet, you will probably like any rye whiskey. If you want something more bourbon, I like Maker's Mark (though that's rather well known). I like Famous Grouse for blended. I like my single malts like Talisker (Islay scotch, closer to 60-70 depending, but I include it for completeness).

|13 weeks 6 days ago||Honestly||
I think VCU's "havoc" is more gimmicky than effective. Teams with good pressure defense with the athletes and length to back it up (see: Louisville) will cause anyone problems. Good defense is good defense. I just don't happen to think VCU qualifies in that regard.
All the same, our lack of turnovers should hopefully help against a bigger and more experienced Villanova team.
|14 weeks 9 hours ago||Agreed 100%||
Every single game in basketball is a separate game. That said, I think the safer bet will be on Nova's size and experience.
We have a chance, but it's going to take a stellar outing from Walton, LeVert, and Irvin to make it happen. I know Irvin and LeVert played a lot today.
Edit: I will say I think if we were playing against VCU tomorrow, we would perform similarly to Villanova. We can handle pressure defense pretty well.
|14 weeks 9 hours ago||Stream of consciousness...||
Wilson is not an impact player in year 1 with this roster. I didn't expect that going in, and seems to be coming through so far. That said, he has perhaps the second most room to grown of any freshman on the roster behind Chatman.
On Chatman, once the game slows down for him (something that McGary and Stauskas seems to indicate happens around March) he will be a critical piece of this team. We keep seeing flashes, but Kam still has a ways to go.
I hate the moniker "Michigan's Big Three" but they are delivering so far. Caris and Walton are showing a great ability to get to the rim which helps the rest of the team. Irvin is doing what he needs to do, and seems to be closer to a freshman level Stauskas in terms of "not just a shooter".
Dawkins has so much potential that may well not be tapped this season. He is all kinds of athletic but has to get his mind and IQ up a bit before I think he's really threatening for minutes. Just hope he continues to have a solid 3 point shot.
Spike... don't know where to begin. He's still just Spike, but that means so much more now that he's Junior Spike instead of freshman/sophomore Spike. He and Walton should not be working together as well as they do, but that tells you a lot about how multiple years in Beilein's system treats you.
Donnal I do think is going to lose playing time to Doyle progressively. That said, I think Donnal fits a really nice niche on this team as the "finesse" big that has some range. We haven't seen that yet, but as long as that's his reputation and scouting report, that helps us.
Doyle. I am 100% convinced that if Doyle is somehow not the starter at the 5 by B1G play, he will be the starter before the season is out. He's not McGary, he's not McGary-Lite, but he is the most physical presence in the frontcourt for this team. That is something we need. Moreover, he seems to have decent hands and a good IQ. We don't need him to be a stretch 5 like Donnal, but we need him to be better at cleaning up the defensive glass.
On DReb.... I'm half convinced Beilein is coaching it such that the Bigs don't rebound themselves, they box out or tip out to give guards the rebound. Donnal is always tipping, and Doyle seems more focused on staying on his guy when he's focusing on boxing out.
|14 weeks 9 hours ago||Indeed.||
But they looked very capable of a great half-time adjustment against VCU. Even though I think now that VCU is perpetually overranked early season because of their First Four - Final Four run (kudos to that team though for what it accomplished).
|14 weeks 9 hours ago||The way they got that Oeff||
is very un-Beilein. the FTA/FGA rate was >60%, that's crazy. Oregon was doing us favors by fouling. If there's one thing to maybe concretely take away from this game, it's that our non-freshmen are REALLY good at free-throws. Which is great.
|14 weeks 9 hours ago||Villanova will be tough||
Very tough. I can't say I'm expecting or even hopeful of a win. But I am hopeful of a great learning opportunity for the freshmen of both a tournament schedule and skill growth.

|15 weeks 4 days ago||Couple thoughts||
1. A Syracuse blogger/insider of some sort reported he had heard that Duke and Michigan were near the top of Battle's list a week or so ago. I'd personally presume Duke is the favorite until we hear something more.
2. Pay attention to where 2015 PG Isaiah Briscoe commits tonight at 6pm. It seems to be a race between UK and St. Johns for his services as one of the top PGs in 2015. If he commits to UK, that would likely be good news for Michigan with respect to Derryck Thornton.
EDIT: Briscoe has committed to UK
