I think VCU's "havoc" is more gimmicky than effective. Teams with good pressure defense with the athletes and length to back it up (see: Louisville) will cause anyone problems. Good defense is good defense. I just don't happen to think VCU qualifies in that regard.
All the same, our lack of turnovers should hopefully help against a bigger and more experienced Villanova team.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||Agreed 100%||
Every single game in basketball is a separate game. That said, I think the safer bet will be on Nova's size and experience.
We have a chance, but it's going to take a stellar outing from Walton, LeVert, and Irvin to make it happen. I know Irvin and LeVert played a lot today.
Edit: I will say I think if we were playing against VCU tomorrow, we would perform similarly to Villanova. We can handle pressure defense pretty well.

Wilson is not an impact player in year 1 with this roster. I didn't expect that going in, and seems to be coming through so far. That said, he has perhaps the second most room to grown of any freshman on the roster behind Chatman.
On Chatman, once the game slows down for him (something that McGary and Stauskas seems to indicate happens around March) he will be a critical piece of this team. We keep seeing flashes, but Kam still has a ways to go.
I hate the moniker "Michigan's Big Three" but they are delivering so far. Caris and Walton are showing a great ability to get to the rim which helps the rest of the team. Irvin is doing what he needs to do, and seems to be closer to a freshman level Stauskas in terms of "not just a shooter".
Dawkins has so much potential that may well not be tapped this season. He is all kinds of athletic but has to get his mind and IQ up a bit before I think he's really threatening for minutes. Just hope he continues to have a solid 3 point shot.
Spike... don't know where to begin. He's still just Spike, but that means so much more now that he's Junior Spike instead of freshman/sophomore Spike. He and Walton should not be working together as well as they do, but that tells you a lot about how multiple years in Beilein's system treats you.
Donnal I do think is going to lose playing time to Doyle progressively. That said, I think Donnal fits a really nice niche on this team as the "finesse" big that has some range. We haven't seen that yet, but as long as that's his reputation and scouting report, that helps us.
Doyle. I am 100% convinced that if Doyle is somehow not the starter at the 5 by B1G play, he will be the starter before the season is out. He's not McGary, he's not McGary-Lite, but he is the most physical presence in the frontcourt for this team. That is something we need. Moreover, he seems to have decent hands and a good IQ. We don't need him to be a stretch 5 like Donnal, but we need him to be better at cleaning up the defensive glass.
On DReb.... I'm half convinced Beilein is coaching it such that the Bigs don't rebound themselves, they box out or tip out to give guards the rebound. Donnal is always tipping, and Doyle seems more focused on staying on his guy when he's focusing on boxing out.

But they looked very capable of a great half-time adjustment against VCU. Even though I think now that VCU is perpetually overranked early season because of their First Four - Final Four run (kudos to that team though for what it accomplished).

is very un-Beilein. the FTA/FGA rate was >60%, that's crazy. Oregon was doing us favors by fouling. If there's one thing to maybe concretely take away from this game, it's that our non-freshmen are REALLY good at free-throws. Which is great.
|3 weeks 1 day ago||Villanova will be tough||
Very tough. I can't say I'm expecting or even hopeful of a win. But I am hopeful of a great learning opportunity for the freshmen of both a tournament schedule and skill growth.

Is that I have but one upvote to give.

Best decision NCAA has made in a while.

1. A Syracuse blogger/insider of some sort reported he had heard that Duke and Michigan were near the top of Battle's list a week or so ago. I'd personally presume Duke is the favorite until we hear something more.
2. Pay attention to where 2015 PG Isaiah Briscoe commits tonight at 6pm. It seems to be a race between UK and St. Johns for his services as one of the top PGs in 2015. If he commits to UK, that would likely be good news for Michigan with respect to Derryck Thornton.
EDIT: Briscoe has committed to UK

To wish Shane the speediest of recoveries. You have all of the Michigan fanbase wishing you the best. I hope you work with the medical staff to get back into playing shape as soon as possible, and represent the University in the manner to which you are accustomed. Go Blue!

That Caris comment just means he is the number one pick to go from Michigan to the NBA next draft.
|18 weeks 3 hours ago||I will||
Take a point.
|18 weeks 1 day ago||I'd say zero chance of pursuing him right now||
Because Michigan already has a 6-11 2016 center in Teske.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||Would have liked him too||
Sadly it was not to be. Or should I say, sadly it was not to bee.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||No small thing||
That Beilein got his Plan A big man for 2016. That's a great start.

|18 weeks 6 days ago||someone||
screen cap it.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||He's a lower-touted commit||
But an 11W article says he was 6-11 without shoes. A legit 7 footer who's current best attribute is "game changer on defense" is a nice addition as far as I'm concerned. Also one less scholarship to scramble to fill with a Plan B or C prospect down the line. Michigan staff got their plan A big man in 2016 with this commit.
