Going to likely be in Xi'an,…

Going to likely be in Xi'an, China, and maybe Shanghai for the Michigan - Michigan State game. What's my best bet for watching the game there?

Good plan

280 is a good class to take, especially if you need to fulfill something like a flex tech requirement like a lot of college of engineering people do. The CS minor is tough though, 281 is even harder than 280, so it's a commitment.

Yep

Strictly C++. Although you don't really use much of the STL of C++ still, it'll mostly teach you some intro to object-oriented programming, pointers, and a couple other things.

CS major here. You're right on the mixed reviews. Generally people who really like coding and plan to continue on say it's not too bad, and the people who are taking it to see if they should pursue the minor/major but end up not liking it say it's one of their toughest courses. This isn't unlike any other gateway 200-level course in that respect.

I've also taken Math 217. It's a lot of work. I'm not familiar with Stats 426, but Math 280, Math 217, and Stats 426 is probably a decent semester's worth of work alone. I wouldn't add Spanish on top of that unless it's real easy and Stats 426 isn't much work either, because 280 and 217 require a lot of time to stay on top of.

Disagree, but conditionally

I took Math 255. Got a new prof who curved the class to a B-/C+ average, and the class was haaaaard. Usually honors classes are good because you learn more and get rewarded where the class average is usually around a B+ and half the class gets A's.

Woah

Woaaaahhhhhh

Nah, just some friends

Lots of organizations and residence halls do some big pools though, although the sample size is too large for any efficiency strategy/game theory

On the topic of inefficiencies

If I'm in a pool of all Michigan students, is it a better value for me to pick Michigan to go farther knowing that most will pick Michigan to go far into the tournament, or a more conservative pick?

Obviously the correct answer is to pick Michigan all the way, just curious game theory-wise what the options are.

Pretty sure

It was NASA saying they found evidence of organisms that utilized a mechanism using arsenic instead of carbon-based compounds to live. Study was basically wrong, that's why it disappeared. They released results prematurely and more analysis ruled out that hypothesis.

that was

actually pretty good

But not nearly as well

as Friendster

But what if

we made fake MSU/OSU Twitter accounts to tweet nasty things at recruits

/s

Joey Burzynski

is biomedical engineering I believe. Definitely doable, but you've gotta be quite bright. As an engineer and a non-athlete myself, it's quite difficult already.

So

do I get an award for making it to the bottom of this thread?

Hey

I weathered that out in the middle of the MSU student section. Not too fun.

That was tickets sold

And seeing as there were many tickets still available on StubHub and scalpers outside were having a real rough time, I doubt all 105,000 showed up

I'm no longer at DTE but

if you report that near miss and it shows up in the safety reports that would be hilarious

Well here's the algorithm

Simple enough right?

So something

Similar to Reddit almost? Of course the same algorithm of rating and timeliness couldn't be replicated (Reddit's algorithm is bugged, funny enough), but I do like that method of sorting

You think that's a mess?

The Maize Rage entrance is SINGLE FILE FOR THE ENTIRE STUDENT SECTION. It's the worst.

This is pretty much right

Plasma: deeper black levels is the big deal. No motion blur issues. Perfect for a man cave. Uses more electricity though.

LCD: Good picture but with screen uniformity issues occasionally and lesser black levels. 120 Hz panels get rid of most motion blur to not be a problem anymore (240 is overkill and not worth it). For brighter rooms, or energy conscious people it's the way to go. Will run a little more expensive up front than comparable plasmas though.

Wait this isn't about the students?

But in actuality, if Michigan fans could all wear the same color for once, it wouldn't look nearly as bad.

Buckeye fans all wear red, so they stand out. Same with Wisconsin and Nebraska, Penn State in white, etc etc. Michigan fans, outside of the students, and they weren't even coordinated today, have never been able to wear the same color like those fanbases, so they don't stand out, and thus makes the visiting fans really stick out.

If we score more than they do

I think we might win this game

Honestly

Never paid more than $20 for a student ticket outside of ND, OSU, and MSU, all of which can be had for $50ish. Pretty much every ticket but those went for free day of game.

It's not worth it to buy season tickets anymore

My dad doesn't do seasons anymore, this season made every game paying no more than $35 for a ticket except for the Notre Dame game which was obviously a little more, all of them sidelines, and this was buying tickets in groups of 4 together so if you're just a single or duo, you could StubHub every game and pay even less.

Next year will be CARNAGE. Especially student tickets. Vast majority of students I know will not pay $295 again for seasons. Most won't even pay $200.

That was me

No offers :(

Because

For a lot of students, thanksgiving is the only time to be home with family. So if you want the chance to see your family, you're selling your ticket to other broke students to watch a subpar football team, how much are you going to get when non students won't buy because of the validation prices and the other assorted inconveniences of the student section?

The game isn't over break

And this year break games are included in the student package anyway

Wait oversold?

Only 2500 students claimed tickets for 3,100 open seats, and 4,000ish have season tickets.

So that means students without season tickets are buying single game tickets, so how are they overselling THOSE? They don't have anything to guarantee to those students!

Conclusion

Rich Rodriguez scorched earth effect

Yes but

Other students are buying them up for friends and family who are still in town. I'm buying student tickets for my family because they're significantly cheaper even with the validation price.

Whoever

The OC for Slippery Rock is

Going

Sitting in the MSU student section.

Please pray for me.

Decision time

Do I go to class or do I not go to class

sigh

If the ONLY auction this off and give 100% proceeds to a notable charity that does solid research, this would be awesome. Limited edition stuff that's game worn has a lot of value that can be exploited for the better of society. The whole "raise awareness" thing people seem to get riled up about wouldn't even be an issue, because who can be upset about a nice big check going to cancer medication R&D with no selfish corporation keeping a check of the profits?

However, see that NFL article for why I will be extremely upset if Michigan makes even a dime of profit off of this.

no

no

Very cool

Hopefully he can make it back on the field for a homecoming in the near future

Profit

Typical prices per game so far ($40 is face value)

CMU: $40-50

ND: $200 range

Akron: Free - $20

Minnesota: $20-$40

Indiana: will be $20-40

Nebraska: probably same range as above, students don't really care that Nebraska is decent. Last year when NW was ranked those tickets were still $20 resell

Ohio State: lots of these are on the market because students are going home for Thanksgiving. Regardless, they're selling for $150-200

I'd like the idea for small games

but for big games like ND/MSU/OSU, a ridiculous number of students would apply for tickets.

But what if they had something like basketball student ticket policy apply to football, but not with overselling tickets and requiring you to pay for every game regardless of if you get the ticket or not? And the only way to apply for a ticket is to the big games is to have applied and attended all of the other games? Something like that could be interesting.

Okay from a student's opinion

1. The section only looks that empty because students are now PACKED into the lower few rows because of general admission. The rest of the stadium was spotty and missing rows of people here or there for that game, but you couldn't tell because the general area was filled. Here, every seat is filled in a row before the next one is filled. The attendance was pathetic, yes, but if students were spread out a little more, it wouldn't have looked nearly as bad. Plus, it filled up alright towards the end. Still pathetic and missing a couple thousand, but not as bad as NW last year.

General admission needs to stay though, because there needs to be some incentive to get there on time. I like the idea of general admission but by classes: separate lines for each student, then at a certain time, maybe 20 minutes before kickoff, then its free reign where any class can sit wherever. This isn't perfect and the times are bad, but it rewards the dedicated seniors AND freshman and punished the non-dedicated fans from all classes.

2. Raising prices wouldn't do much. Why? Because the most devoted fans aren't even going to buy tickets. Just because you have money doesn't mean you're going to go to the games. Everyone likes to talk about entitlement here, and that comes with having a lot of money. There are plenty of well-off-enough kids who will not use tickets at any price.

The one thing raising prices WILL do is discourage students from buying tickets and selling them to make a profit, which is RAMPANT. The ND ticket was sold for the cost of student seasons, and the rest are just sold off as additional profit if possible. TONS of tickets are for sale and not sold.

Ticket validation is going away. I was going to make a post about this, but for basketball and hockey NO TICKET VALIDATION IS REQUIRED. You have free reign to sell your ticket to anyone to use, no student ID required. I think this is very interesting: on one hand, it makes it way easier for students to get rid of tickets to games they can't make (not sure if StubHub will take them though, they haven't in the past), but on the other hand it further encourages students to buy season tickets then just flip them for a profit.

3. They used to kind of do this in the past: tickets to "premium games" were ~ $15 more than the others. This year they all say $40 on them although we all know the ND ticket is basically $150 and the rest are $10-25. I just don't see how this fixes any problem.

The ONLY solution to the student section is to make the experience so great that students won't miss it (we're dedicated fans on MGoBlog so we're biased in saying that it's already great. No matter how true that is, certain students just don't have the same opinion) by scheduling only top of the line teams, or to instill some attendance policy that forces attendance.

I wish we could have an Izzone style setup

But we just don't get the numbers for it for weaker games, thus everyone loses.

Under 400 people get into the bleachers. That creates a pretty weak home court advantage.

I can tell you

That for the OSU game, there were a lot of patchy empty seats in the lower bowl across from the student section. Most other big games were pretty full, but there were still noticeable no shows for them.

The rest of the games there were also a lot of empty seats, despite all the sellout claims.

Wow

I think Elon is kinda bad

Technically LCD is correct

Your TV is LCD, the backlight behind the panel is just made of LED lights instead of CCFL

MSU is also claiming her though

Twitter is saying she was a Sigma Kappa at MSU..... sooo where did they go wrong?

It was in the article about GA

I was up in the upper bowl for that game. Last 15ish rows were pretty empty, mostly people being snuck in from the non student sections was the only reason it wasn't completely empty

I know that's sarcastic

But it was given to a Michigan guy, don't fret

I won't be in town

And had to give away my ticket for free to that game so many students are selling. Somebody take pictures to show how empty the section is please

It's a plant

Obnoxious

I'm here at Gameday

Lots of good signs, keep looking around. A lot of creativity and plenty of classics.
