I graduated in 2016 but was a non-traditional student having served in the Army first for almost a decade.
When we played Air Force there was a discussion about not doing “you suck” out of respect. The consensus though was that not doing it was more disrespectful, as if they somehow couldn’t handle it or something.
I can’t speak for all veterans and certainly not for service academy cadet/athletes, but if it were me I wouldn’t want special treatment DURING the game. I’d want to be treated like any other opponent.
Also, you shouldn’t do “you suck” when they’re going for it on 4th down anyway.
For the record, I love “you suck” but I’m not a fan of “bitch” being added to it.
I'm an EE, but was CSE and took 203, 280, 281, 270, and just finished 370. I thought 280 projects and material were fairly easy, but the exams are brutal. It's likely that the class will actually be team taught, where each professor listed will teach part of the course for all three sections (that's how Deorio and Fu did it when I took it last year). The nice thing is that the lectures are recorded so you can re-watch them, or if you're swamped you can catch them later. The labs are really easy, but good practice.
If you've taken 280 prior to the last two semesters (like I did), try not to get really angry, but for the last two semesters all of the projects were allowed to be done in teams of 2. So you could work with a partner on them. Partner selection can really impact the time required for this course.
If you're motivated, and enjoy coding, the course is very manageable, and help is always available if you ask for it.
Personally, I love coding but hate the CS department. I think they overall do a terrible job of actually teaching, especially the introductory courses. That's why I switched to EE, and I couldn't be happier with that choice.
Incidentally I finished EECS 216, and 370 finals, up studying for EECS 230 final tomorrow night.
Letting former athletes, regardless of how successful dictate anything isn't okay. They are not Michigan. Sure they represented us, and we appreciate them and even love them for it. For me at least though, I don't care who they are, it's not about them. His version is less eloquent but no different than "No man is more important than the Team.." You can argue that he should have phrased it better, but it reads to me the same way, and I agree with him.
I was actually an NCO in intelligence, but that's neither here nor there. I always got in trouble in the Army for asking why, so believe me when I tell you I'm not a blindly follow orders kind of leader myself.
Picture this, your overbearing, out of touch, micromanaging boss orders you to do something you know is a bad idea. You know you have to do your job, and you love where you work, so you do it even though you know it's a terrible idea. After it blows up, and you have to make a statement about it. You can't throw your boss under the bus, or you get fired, and you make yourself sound irrelevant. So you make a statement about trying to be smart about it, which is probably what you told your boss to begin with. Sort of an I told you so to your boss without being too obvious.
DB clearly wanted to "market the brand" to other than traditional fans. He did it with marketing gimmicks, which Hunter had to implement. They all ended horribly. In many cases, I agree what Hunter said wasn't good, but what was he supposed to say? My boss is an idiot and I told him not to do this.
From what I understand Hunter didn't authorize the Coke for tickets thing. According to some contract the company gets a bunch of tickets it can use for promotions, but it's supposed to clear them with the department first. They didn't clear it and just did it. Again, he doesn't want to throw the sponsors under the bus and lose money from the department. What is he supposed to say? If you wanted to keep your job, what would you say?
I'll tell you one thing Hunter did, after last season and the disastrous general admission policy, Hunter formed a Student Advisory Council. The council was composed of 4 students from each class (freshmen - graduate student) plus 2 from the central student government. We met throughout the season, and Hunter attended our meetings, and that council was the reason student ticket prices were lowered, along with other, mostly student section related fixes.
Hunter cared, and got it. He is the scapegoat for a lot of the BS that has happened and that is unfortunate.
I know you guys don't know me so you don't know what a big deal it is that I'm defending him. As I said I'm an engineering student. I'm not a fan of marketing or business in general. I prefer facts and truth to promotions and advertisements that make emotional appeals. Michigan football is one of the very few things I actually get emotional about. Ask my wife, I get yelled at about it all the time. Hunter has earned my respect and trust. He's not the person that he's being made out to be, and while I have disagreed with some of his decisions, and he is responsible for a small percent of the problems, he is not the problem.
The real problem in my humble opinion is that people are looking for a person to blame for an institutional failure. Michigan's problems don't start with the athletics department. They are much deeper. It's not just Dave Brandon that cared more about money than tradition. Many people have forgotten what Michigan's real tradition is. One of the clearest and least political examples I can give for this it the visceral hatred for passing offenses at Michigan. I hear people constantly complaining and saying that we have to run the ball, we have to play man ball, and Bo would roll over in his grave if we don't run more. All the while forgetting that Michigan was a pioneer in the forward pass:

In short, rushing smash mouth manball is not Michigan's tradition.
In general, money, an enormous endowment, etc is not Michigan's tradition.
Michigan's tradition in one word is: Excellence.
In everything we do we should strive for and achieve excellence. If that requires hurry up, spread, passing offenses, then so be it. People are so short sighted, and attacking Hunter is just one more example of it. Until we drop the notion that we have to do things one way because that's the Michigan way, and realize that whatever way is the best way is the Michigan way, and just because we've always done something one way does not make it the best way, then we will not return to our positon as the leaders and the best.

I am an undergraduate Engineering student at Michigan right now. I'm also a 9 year US Army veteran. I met Hunter last year during the general admission fiasco, and I've been in consistent contact with him since then. I've gotten to know him fairly well since then. He is a good man who cared about Michigan.
So I'm curious, and have a question for everyone attacking him. I've heard a lot about how Dave Brandon micromanaged everything. He would watch film with coach Hoke, and exerted his influence in everything. Yet somehow you all seem to believe that Hunter was solely responsible for all of the ridiculous marketing gimmicks and set the policy on who they were targeting (families of 4 from GR who only come to one game a year). You don't seem to think it's possible that he disagreed with what was being done as well, but tried to do what he could, and do his job. That far from being a yes man, he registered his disagreement with DB, but was overruled by his boss.
One thing I learned in the Army is that real leaders own what they're doing, even when they're being forced to do it by their superiors, and they don't throw their superiors under the bus, or play the blame game. Hunter was a real leader.
Also, attacking him for his twitter name? Really? I guarantee if we looked at half of your facebook or twitter accounts we would find far worse than a twitter name LochDogg.
I'm glad I got to know Hunter, and I'm sad to see him go.
Without the fans (and donors) you have no facilities or equipment and are an insignificant club sport. The fans invest their time, emotion, and money and that investment is no less important or relevant than the contribution that the players and coaches make. Neither will exist without the other. I guarantee if the fans all left, college football would not exist for long.
This was just another in a string of excellent games played and won by these women. They are an excellent team and if you haven't watched them play you should.
After almost 9 years in the Army I'm now an undergraduate engineering student at Michigan. I've never been a soccer fan, and in fact had never watched a whole game of soccer. I love football, hockey, and basketball. When I moved here with my wife and 4 year old daughter I rented a house in the area and by amazing luck our neighbors daughter was beginning as a freshmen at Michigan and was a scholarship player on the soccer team. To support our neighbors I decided to go to the first home game of the season and brought my daughter. Since then I've been hooked. These women are so much fun to watch and are so talented. Yet even with all the individual talent, they play so well together as a team. I really enjoy watching their games and cheering for them. They've made me a fan of soccer which is something I never thought could happen. My daughter loves going to the games as well and cheering for our neighbor and the entire team. Since moving down here she learned the Victors and sings it constantly. The only thing that could be better would be if more people would come watch and cheer for these women. The attendance at the Womens Soccer is rather low. While it's a little late this season, if you want to see some great competitors battle it out, you really should come watch this team play.

Worst offensive play calling I've seen since the Carr days. Pathetic. Fire Borges and fire Hoke for hiring him. It's not just this game it's all the games this season.
the issue is that they were making dirty plays and seemed to be deliberately trying to injure Denard (grabbing his facemask and twisting after a late hit) and then the roughing the passer. I'm sure there were more I didn't see. That shouldn't be tolerated at all. Yep, we lost, and our play wasn't that great, and I have no issue with a clean loss. But when someone tries to deliberately injure a player from the other team, they should be called out, and if their coach doesn't put a stop to it (sits them for one play and then puts them back in), then the league should step in and start vacating wins or penalizing the team. Taunting and classless stuff like that is silly and poor sportsmanship, but the real concern is trying to injure other players. That's not sports, it’s assault.
Thanks RR for showing us something different at Michigan. I wish you had been given the 4th year to prove/disprove your work. You are a great coach, and a great man. I wish you and your family the best of luck, and I'm sure you'll be leading another team to wins in no time.
let them sit and refuse to discuss it for a month so that their buyout drops to $2.5 mil instead of $4 mil, then fire them like you already decided to. Thus you've saved $1.5 mil to use on the lawyers when he files a lawsuit against you for doing that. I hope that's not what happened, but perception is reality in many cases.
I just wish that when they say they're selling "authentic" jerseys that they were actually, you know, more like what they players wear. The "authentic" jerseys they sell are decent quality, but they're not very authentic, other than that they're made by adidas.
this post was a massive failure after the PSU game, not just because of your opinion, but because of the way you wrote it. The problem with being drunk and writing isn't that you can't have a rational thought, but that most drunk people can't express a rational thought in a way that is interresting, or appropriate for people who are not themselves drunk. I'd like RR to stay for 1 more year with a different defensive staff, however I also would understand and be okay with JH coming in. I just really hope we're not the next Notre Dame with all this CC.
the car thing is pretty common at most schools as another poster pointed out above. Most of these athleets get some kind of "improper" benefit. Granted OSU is pretty shady on a lot of things, and I'd love nothing more than for them to burn, however, Tressel did come out and say that the "over practicing" happens at most major schools and wasn't a big deal, when the rest of the media was trying to crucify us for it. As much as I hate OSU, I feel honor bound to not sling mud, but to let them get caught on their own and fry for it.
a dime. perhaps some of the comentators on there are not so bad, but as a whole, i wouldn't give them a single penny. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm done defending RR to anyone who wants him gone. I've supported him, but more importantly I've supported the players, the team and the school. If people don't show up to the games because they don't support the coach, then they should give up their season tickets, move to afghanistan and join the taliban. Michigan football is bigger than a coach, a player, a recruit. It's a team, and we should support the team, and want them to succeed. Yes, RR has been responsible as the head coach for several embarrasing losses, an NCAA investigation/probation, and some of our worst-on-record performances. If DB decides to fire him, I'll support the next HC as much as I supported RR. However, if DB decides to bring back RR, then support the team, or find a new team to be a fan of. As I said above, the taliban is always recruiting.
what's the point of having a minimum point total to post new content when people get insane amounts of points for posting pictures and .gif files in replys instead of original thoughts/ideas or even opinions. Not saying that's how the OP in this thread got his points, but seriously, points are meaningless for judging whether someone can be trusted to post quality content when people upvote single word replys and silly cat pictures.
i can sort of see the op's arguement if it were put more like this, we all (most of us) have some superstition about game day attire/actions. Perhaps it's just another superstition that a coach should wear maize and blue instead of white and blue for the games. I'm just guessing. I know I have certain things I wear every game day, and have some way more obsessive friends who are very specific on what they eat and wear, where they sit etc.
what about lloyd's record vs OSU in his last few years (tressel era). Not better than RR. The "Michigan Man" argument never held any weight with me. Bo played for Miami (OH), and was an assistant coach at fing ohio state before coming to Michigan. How is Bo more of a Michigan man than RR? Granted Bo had a much better record at Michigan, but that was never the point of the "Michigan Man" arguement. RR didn't ever get a fair shake from many fans, and certainly not from the media. That however is where my defense of RR ends. There are a lot of negative things that have happened since RR came to Michgan, and I can certainly see the arguement to replace him. I also can see the arguement to keep him for one more year (as long as we get a new Defensive staff). The thing is, I'm so drained from the whole thing, that I just don't care anymore what decision DB makes. If it's to keep RR, at least we'll see if he can do better in his 4th year, if he can, great, Michigan wins and we're all happy. If the team can't win after next year, no one would argue for another year. If however DB decides to bring in another coach, be it JH or whoever else, I will support his decision, the new coach, and the Team. I really just want the team to win. Regardless of what that takes (as long as we're not cheating, or being classless). IMO too many fans have let their hatered of RR blind them, and turn them into fans that no team needs. If you ever rooted against Michigan because you thought it would hasten the change of coaching staff, well, you should just join the taliban. With that, happy new year, and Go Blue!
Some of the soldiers I met in Afghanistan from an Arkansas National Guard engineer unit told me some things about this. Apparently, one of the soldiers cousins is friends with Mallett. He told me Mallett said he wasn't forced out. He liked Michigan, but preferred to be closer to home, and the coaching change, along with the new scheme (spread vs. pro) he figured it was a good time/excuse to transfer.
I realize this is considered hearsay, because I didn't hear it directly from the source, but these guys had no reason to lie about what their family member told them. I also saw pictures of the Soldier with his cousin, and his cousin with Mallett, so I consider this to be true information.
There are 2 things my 15 month old daughter loves to watch, one is "Jacks Big Music Show" on nick junior, and the other is Michigan football. She's been doing the touchdown sign since she was 8 months old. She was 2 days old during the Indiana game in 2009, I watched it while holding her in the hospital (we had to stay an extra couple days because she had a mild infection). She's on her way to being a die hard M fan like me. I also have converted my wife from a state fan to loving Michigan.
I understand what six-zero is saying in his post, and he's right about the cost and time associated with this. As another commenter said though, we don't know if this was the best one they offered or there were better ones that delaney didn't choose. I think one important thing to remember here though, is that one of the reasons we have logo's or marks is to put it on products to sell to consumers/fans. If 90% of the fanbase hates this thing, no one will buy the products that it is put on. In the grand scheme of things, it's used for many other things, and no one is going to not go to a school they want to because of the conference logo. However, I wouldn't buy anything that had this logo on it. I agree with another poster above who said that they missed the mark, and listened to "experts" instead of the public. You'll never make everyone happy, but usually you won't make everyone hate something either. As another poster commented as well, the majority of us are not experts in developing a brand logo/mark or anything like that, however the logos/marks are designed to get us to recognize the brand, and buy it. In that aspect we are experts because we are targeted every second of every day by brand marks/logos. We recognize and buy into ones that are good, and we avoid, ignore, and don't buy into ones that don't connect with us. In this case the Big Ten made a mistake and didn't connect with their target audience, and I believe it's in their best interest to start over and get another one. I am thinking of the long term, because I don't believe that the logo chosen will ever "grow" on me. It has absolutely no appeal to me, or most other fans. I can live with the trophys, hell, I can even live with the division names, I think they could have done better, but they also could have been much worse. The logo though, I don't think they could have done worse. I'm also not advocating hiding or even putting the number 12 in the logo, because seriously, it's not, and hasn't been for over a decade the actual number of teams in the league. It's simply the brand name.
Ok, I understand that everything is ultimately on the head coach, but here's my take.You have an offense that is just crazy good, yes they make mistakes some times, but they're pretty young still. They're scoring like 30 points per game, 67 in this one, and yet I still hear people say, we can't win in the big ten with this gimicky offense. Really? If we had even an average defense, we'd be undefeated. Our problems are on defense. That being said, today, despite giving up 65 points, and a boat load of yards, they did have some really good stops. Especailly that last one. I guess we need to watch them for the rest of the season. Either way, keep RR, because this offense is the way to go. If our defense doesn't improve, maybe bring in a different defensive staff, but for the love of god, don't get rid of RR. Who says we can't recruit the "smaller" faster guys to fill our offense, and have traditional big ten "bigger" guys for our defense? I haven't seen that rule, so if it exists, someone please provide a link.
the practice field in relation to the stadium? I've got a parking pass for Pioneer HS lot from a family member with season tickets, so I'll be parking there. What time should I show up? I'll be bringing my wife, father, and one of my wife's friends, because apparently all of my friends are state fans. As a disabled Army veteran now in Afghanistan as a contractor, I'll be streaming the game online for myself and a few of the Soldiers I support/work with who are big enough M fans to stay up and watch the game. Though noon games are better, the 3:30pm starts keep us up until around 4am. Every little bit helps the Soldiers over here, the moondust like dirt and constant wear of patrols tends to make clothing wear out faster, and in most of Afghanistan it's starting to get pretty cold. Where we are about 60km West of Kandahar City, summer temps were around 110-120 degrees, now, night time temps are dropping into the 40's, and it's about to get a lot colder. The Soldiers get issued cold weather gear, but warm socks would probably be greatly appreciated. Also, most of us love ramen noodles, beats the heck out of the food (and I use that term loosly) that the dining facility or mobile kitchen's serve. In case you didn't know, most of the food we eat is designated "for military and prison use only," and I'm not kidding or making that up. If you are planning on mailing anything to a Soldier/Sailor/Airmen/Marine over here, winter is the time you can mail most anything food related. During the summer, don't mail anything meltable, mail usually makes it to Kandahar Air Field, or Bagram Airfield within a few days from the states, there it sits in a shipping container, or on pallets, in the sun/elements, not environmentally controlled area until they can find space for it on a bird or convoy, larger packages usually sit longer than smaller, but many times, they sit for at least a week. In the summer anything you send that can melt, will. It's awesome that Michigan is doing this, and I'm sure Michigan fans will help support it. Us Michigan fans deployed over here appreciate all the prayers and support, and even the ranting on the boards, as it's a nice distraction from the reality on the ground over here. It's always better with a win, so let's hope we can pull it together for the rest of the games this year (particularly for Wisconsin since I'll be home on leave and have tickets!) GO BLUE! and God bless our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines, Veterans, and everyone who supports them.
Almost my entire family (including my wife) are MSU fans (from Petoskey by the way). Not sure how I ended up a Michigan fan, but I don't remember ever being a fan of any other school. My dad has 3 cousins who are M grads (back in the 70's). I joined the Army at 17 right out of high school. After almost 10 years I was medically chaptered, and I'm now working as a civilian over in Afghanistan (I wear maize and blue 3 days a week over here, and my Michigan hat everyday!) The reason I'm over here is to make enough money to go to school full time when I get home and still be able to support my wife and 1 year old daughter (who was 1 month old when I left to come over). She was born on the 24th of September last year and had to stay in the hospital for a few days because of an infection. I almost got into a fight with the nurse because I insisted that she be in my arms for the Michigan game against Indiana, and I watched it with her in the hospital. At any rate, I'm applying to Michigan for the winter 2012 semester hoping to get in for Computer Science. My fall back school is GVSU, I'd rather be unemployed than go to MSU.
Our defense did better than I expected. They were on the field for what 2/3 of the game. Now part of that is because they couldn't get the 3 and out, or stop 4th down conversions. But a big part of that was because our offense scored so fast. Our defense needs work, no one disputes that, but they don't flat out suck. We're talking about such young guys playing their 5th college game. To have so many young guys out on the field for so long, and still have them playing hard and not giving up, I'd say they deserve a lot more credit than they get. As to the recruiting arguement, I'm not a recruiting expert, nor am I any kind of football expert, but maybe RR recruited so much offensive talent instead of defense, because he wanted people to see his offense in action. Now that we have the offense rolling, we look way more appealing to defensive recruits. The good recruits now have a reason to consider Michigan, because they know we have the offense to put up points and win games, which can turn into championships. I think RR was right to recruit heavy on the offense to start out, because bringing in defensive players would have slowed down the development of the offense, leaving more doubt about his ability to put together this insane offense we have now. Oh, what else did i learn today? We are 5-0, and no matter what happens next week, for this week, I will enjoy being 5-0. Go Blue!

For Michigan, I expected us to be higher on revenue than we are, and I think most of us assumed that Michigan had a higher profit ammount. The thing is, the profit goes into a lot of other things. Not working in the Athletic Department, I can't say this for sure, but I would bet it gets reinvested into facilities, and to support other non revenue sports. There are a lot of programs who don't make any profit, and some that lose money. So paying players isn't likely to happen. I personally can't stand pro sports, once these guys start making the kind of money they do in the pros, it just loses something, and I don't enjoy it. I understand the reasons people want to pay college athleets, and I don't disagree that they should probably get something more than they do currently, but there do get a lot of benefits that other college kids don't. As for the non-scholarship players, I feel for them the most, as they probably have it rougher than many college students. However, that's their choice, if they don't want to do it, they don't have to. I personally would give anything to be able to make the Michigan football team. I don't know what the perfect answer is, but given the information I copied from espn above, I don't think that it's going to happen.

in case you didn't know, the point total to post was raised to 100 a few hours ago. I was at 85 points when it happened. I got an e-mail saying I could no longer start topics. Then when I went over 100 points, I got another e-mail saying I could start threads again. So, it was raised to 100, maybe not high enough in some members eyes, but at least it's better than it was.
I don't blame you for being selfish, I think any real fan would be in that situation. That's amazing, and I wish you luck on winning again, since I'm not a student, and can't compete with you, if I was a student, I'd find a way to sabotage you and win myself...j/k...sort of, lol. I'm deployed in Afghanistan, I've had to watch all the games on justin.tv so far. Except for the UMASS game, that wasn't broadcast by anyone unfortunately. I had to listen to it on internet radio.
I wonder if there are other sites that have had similar problems that we could learn from, instead of re-inventing the wheel. Either way, 20 points was too low, but I think 500 is too high. Either way, trolls will be trolls, and regardless of the point total to start a new thread, the trolls will probably still exist. Trolls are if nothing else dedicated to trolling. I'm pretty new to the mgoblog community, but I feel like I am a member of the community now, I think the time limit of 2 weeks plus a 100 point to start new posts makes the most sense. If we make the point total 500, or 1000, trolls can easily get that in 2 weeks anyways, the dedicated ones anyways, but the drive by trolling won't occur as much. At least that way we should only get the really dedicated (and often more amusing, though still annoying) trolls. Less total trolling, and easier moderating. As for quality of posts, I agree with what a lot of people are saying, quality doesn't come from a lot of mgopoints, and quality (value of a thought) of a post is not the same thing to everyone. Anyways that's my 2 cents. Got the e-mail a few minutes ago abou the point total being raised to 100, and even though I'm below 100, I don't have a problem with it.
seriously, I don't want a denard jersey, I'd like number 52. Don't ask why, I just do. Also, I'd like to point out that the "authentic" jerseys sold by mden and elsewhere are NOT the real deal what they wear on the field. They are missing a couple things like the interior shoulderpad imprints of the Big Ten championship years. The sleves are also wrong, as well as a couple of other things. I want a real jersey. I've googled the hell out of this, nothing is available that is a real Adidas home jersey, the "authentic" jerseys are close I guess, and I have 2 of them.

Yeah, I spent most of the last decade in the Army (went in when I was 17), so I don't have the money to donate, or the relationships. Three or four of my dad's cousins are Michigan Alums, but they are pretty old now and say they don't know anyone around AA anymore. Though all of them are season ticket holders. I am not a season ticket holder, because of the reason I mentioned above. I was medically discharged last spring and am now working as a contractor over here, and when I'm done with my 2 years over here, I'm going to finally go to school full time (have to stay 2 years to make enough money to still support my wife and daughter while I go to school full time). I'm applying to Michigan (Computer Science), and GVSU where my wife went.

I'm glad that the discussion has turned to no 9 game conference schedule. As another poster pointed out, with 12 teams, the 9th game doesn't really add anything. I'd much rather see M play an OOC opponent than another B10 team. I'd like to see us schedule better OOC opponents, not just creampuffs. I'd really like to see us start to schedule some teams that we haven't played before, or have only played once or twice. There are a lot of teams out there we've never played before. Not FCS, but FBS teams. I'd like to see M set a new record of having at least 1 win against every FBS team.
I'm pretty sure that there are FAR worse things we could be obsessed with. Everyone is obsessed with something. My wife has accused me of putting Michigan football over her and my daughter before (I'm 99% sure she was joking).

They are white, with the Blue M in the middle, a bar code on the right side (when horizontal). Section 24 Row B. That's why I was concerned that they might be fake, That's as close to mid field in the first row as I could get. Can anyone confirm that that's not in the student section, or a student ticket? If they're legit, I'm going to probably die at the game, especially if we win.

I graduated in 2016 but was a non-traditional student having served in the Army first for almost a decade.
When we played Air Force there was a discussion about not doing “you suck” out of respect. The consensus though was that not doing it was more disrespectful, as if they somehow couldn’t handle it or something.
I can’t speak for all veterans and certainly not for service academy cadet/athletes, but if it were me I wouldn’t want special treatment DURING the game. I’d want to be treated like any other opponent.
Also, you shouldn’t do “you suck” when they’re going for it on 4th down anyway.

I'm an EE, but was CSE and took 203, 280, 281, 270, and just finished 370. I thought 280 projects and material were fairly easy, but the exams are brutal. It's likely that the class will actually be team taught, where each professor listed will teach part of the course for all three sections (that's how Deorio and Fu did it when I took it last year). The nice thing is that the lectures are recorded so you can re-watch them, or if you're swamped you can catch them later. The labs are really easy, but good practice.
If you've taken 280 prior to the last two semesters (like I did), try not to get really angry, but for the last two semesters all of the projects were allowed to be done in teams of 2. So you could work with a partner on them. Partner selection can really impact the time required for this course.
If you're motivated, and enjoy coding, the course is very manageable, and help is always available if you ask for it.
Personally, I love coding but hate the CS department. I think they overall do a terrible job of actually teaching, especially the introductory courses. That's why I switched to EE, and I couldn't be happier with that choice.
Incidentally I finished EECS 216, and 370 finals, up studying for EECS 230 final tomorrow night.

Letting former athletes, regardless of how successful dictate anything isn't okay. They are not Michigan. Sure they represented us, and we appreciate them and even love them for it. For me at least though, I don't care who they are, it's not about them. His version is less eloquent but no different than "No man is more important than the Team.." You can argue that he should have phrased it better, but it reads to me the same way, and I agree with him.
I was actually an NCO in intelligence, but that's neither here nor there. I always got in trouble in the Army for asking why, so believe me when I tell you I'm not a blindly follow orders kind of leader myself.
Picture this, your overbearing, out of touch, micromanaging boss orders you to do something you know is a bad idea. You know you have to do your job, and you love where you work, so you do it even though you know it's a terrible idea. After it blows up, and you have to make a statement about it. You can't throw your boss under the bus, or you get fired, and you make yourself sound irrelevant. So you make a statement about trying to be smart about it, which is probably what you told your boss to begin with. Sort of an I told you so to your boss without being too obvious.
DB clearly wanted to "market the brand" to other than traditional fans. He did it with marketing gimmicks, which Hunter had to implement. They all ended horribly. In many cases, I agree what Hunter said wasn't good, but what was he supposed to say? My boss is an idiot and I told him not to do this.
From what I understand Hunter didn't authorize the Coke for tickets thing. According to some contract the company gets a bunch of tickets it can use for promotions, but it's supposed to clear them with the department first. They didn't clear it and just did it. Again, he doesn't want to throw the sponsors under the bus and lose money from the department. What is he supposed to say? If you wanted to keep your job, what would you say?
I'll tell you one thing Hunter did, after last season and the disastrous general admission policy, Hunter formed a Student Advisory Council. The council was composed of 4 students from each class (freshmen - graduate student) plus 2 from the central student government. We met throughout the season, and Hunter attended our meetings, and that council was the reason student ticket prices were lowered, along with other, mostly student section related fixes.
Hunter cared, and got it. He is the scapegoat for a lot of the BS that has happened and that is unfortunate.
I know you guys don't know me so you don't know what a big deal it is that I'm defending him. As I said I'm an engineering student. I'm not a fan of marketing or business in general. I prefer facts and truth to promotions and advertisements that make emotional appeals. Michigan football is one of the very few things I actually get emotional about. Ask my wife, I get yelled at about it all the time. Hunter has earned my respect and trust. He's not the person that he's being made out to be, and while I have disagreed with some of his decisions, and he is responsible for a small percent of the problems, he is not the problem.
The real problem in my humble opinion is that people are looking for a person to blame for an institutional failure. Michigan's problems don't start with the athletics department. They are much deeper. It's not just Dave Brandon that cared more about money than tradition. Many people have forgotten what Michigan's real tradition is. One of the clearest and least political examples I can give for this it the visceral hatred for passing offenses at Michigan. I hear people constantly complaining and saying that we have to run the ball, we have to play man ball, and Bo would roll over in his grave if we don't run more. All the while forgetting that Michigan was a pioneer in the forward pass:

In general, money, an enormous endowment, etc is not Michigan's tradition.
Michigan's tradition in one word is: Excellence.
In everything we do we should strive for and achieve excellence. If that requires hurry up, spread, passing offenses, then so be it. People are so short sighted, and attacking Hunter is just one more example of it. Until we drop the notion that we have to do things one way because that's the Michigan way, and realize that whatever way is the best way is the Michigan way, and just because we've always done something one way does not make it the best way, then we will not return to our positon as the leaders and the best.

I am an undergraduate Engineering student at Michigan right now. I'm also a 9 year US Army veteran. I met Hunter last year during the general admission fiasco, and I've been in consistent contact with him since then. I've gotten to know him fairly well since then. He is a good man who cared about Michigan.
So I'm curious, and have a question for everyone attacking him. I've heard a lot about how Dave Brandon micromanaged everything. He would watch film with coach Hoke, and exerted his influence in everything. Yet somehow you all seem to believe that Hunter was solely responsible for all of the ridiculous marketing gimmicks and set the policy on who they were targeting (families of 4 from GR who only come to one game a year). You don't seem to think it's possible that he disagreed with what was being done as well, but tried to do what he could, and do his job. That far from being a yes man, he registered his disagreement with DB, but was overruled by his boss.
One thing I learned in the Army is that real leaders own what they're doing, even when they're being forced to do it by their superiors, and they don't throw their superiors under the bus, or play the blame game. Hunter was a real leader.
Also, attacking him for his twitter name? Really? I guarantee if we looked at half of your facebook or twitter accounts we would find far worse than a twitter name LochDogg.

Without the fans (and donors) you have no facilities or equipment and are an insignificant club sport. The fans invest their time, emotion, and money and that investment is no less important or relevant than the contribution that the players and coaches make. Neither will exist without the other. I guarantee if the fans all left, college football would not exist for long.
This was just another in a string of excellent games played and won by these women. They are an excellent team and if you haven't watched them play you should.
After almost 9 years in the Army I'm now an undergraduate engineering student at Michigan. I've never been a soccer fan, and in fact had never watched a whole game of soccer. I love football, hockey, and basketball. When I moved here with my wife and 4 year old daughter I rented a house in the area and by amazing luck our neighbors daughter was beginning as a freshmen at Michigan and was a scholarship player on the soccer team. To support our neighbors I decided to go to the first home game of the season and brought my daughter. Since then I've been hooked. These women are so much fun to watch and are so talented. Yet even with all the individual talent, they play so well together as a team. I really enjoy watching their games and cheering for them. They've made me a fan of soccer which is something I never thought could happen. My daughter loves going to the games as well and cheering for our neighbor and the entire team. Since moving down here she learned the Victors and sings it constantly. The only thing that could be better would be if more people would come watch and cheer for these women. The attendance at the Womens Soccer is rather low. While it's a little late this season, if you want to see some great competitors battle it out, you really should come watch this team play.

Also, my 3 year old daughter has been telling everyone, "My daddy's going to Michigan!" she watches all the games with me and is excited too!
the issue is that they were making dirty plays and seemed to be deliberately trying to injure Denard (grabbing his facemask and twisting after a late hit) and then the roughing the passer. I'm sure there were more I didn't see. That shouldn't be tolerated at all. Yep, we lost, and our play wasn't that great, and I have no issue with a clean loss. But when someone tries to deliberately injure a player from the other team, they should be called out, and if their coach doesn't put a stop to it (sits them for one play and then puts them back in), then the league should step in and start vacating wins or penalizing the team. Taunting and classless stuff like that is silly and poor sportsmanship, but the real concern is trying to injure other players. That's not sports, it’s assault.
Thanks RR for showing us something different at Michigan. I wish you had been given the 4th year to prove/disprove your work. You are a great coach, and a great man. I wish you and your family the best of luck, and I'm sure you'll be leading another team to wins in no time.
let them sit and refuse to discuss it for a month so that their buyout drops to $2.5 mil instead of $4 mil, then fire them like you already decided to. Thus you've saved $1.5 mil to use on the lawyers when he files a lawsuit against you for doing that. I hope that's not what happened, but perception is reality in many cases.
I just wish that when they say they're selling "authentic" jerseys that they were actually, you know, more like what they players wear. The "authentic" jerseys they sell are decent quality, but they're not very authentic, other than that they're made by adidas.
this post was a massive failure after the PSU game, not just because of your opinion, but because of the way you wrote it. The problem with being drunk and writing isn't that you can't have a rational thought, but that most drunk people can't express a rational thought in a way that is interresting, or appropriate for people who are not themselves drunk. the car thing is pretty common at most schools as another poster pointed out above. Most of these athleets get some kind of "improper" benefit. Granted OSU is pretty shady on a lot of things, and I'd love nothing more than for them to burn, however, Tressel did come out and say that the "over practicing" happens at most major schools and wasn't a big deal, when the rest of the media was trying to crucify us for it. As much as I hate OSU, I feel honor bound to not sling mud, but to let them get caught on their own and fry for it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm done defending RR to anyone who wants him gone. I've supported him, but more importantly I've supported the players, the team and the school. If people don't show up to the games because they don't support the coach, then they should give up their season tickets, move to afghanistan and join the taliban. Michigan football is bigger than a coach, a player, a recruit. It's a team, and we should support the team, and want them to succeed. Yes, RR has been responsible as the head coach for several embarrasing losses, an NCAA investigation/probation, and some of our worst-on-record performances. If DB decides to fire him, I'll support the next HC as much as I supported RR. However, if DB decides to bring back RR, then support the team, or find a new team to be a fan of. As I said above, the taliban is always recruiting.

Not saying that's how the OP in this thread got his points, but seriously, points are meaningless for judging whether someone can be trusted to post quality content when people upvote single word replys and silly cat pictures.
i can sort of see the op's arguement if it were put more like this, we all (most of us) have some superstition about game day attire/actions. Perhaps it's just another superstition that a coach should wear maize and blue instead of white and blue for the games. I'm just guessing. I know I have certain things I wear every game day, and have some way more obsessive friends who are very specific on what they eat and wear, where they sit etc.
what about lloyd's record vs OSU in his last few years (tressel era). Not better than RR. The "Michigan Man" argument never held any weight with me. Bo played for Miami (OH), and was an assistant coach at fing ohio state before coming to Michigan. How is Bo more of a Michigan man than RR? Granted Bo had a much better record at Michigan, but that was never the point of the "Michigan Man" arguement. RR didn't ever get a fair shake from many fans, and certainly not from the media. That however is where my defense of RR ends. There are a lot of negative things that have happened since RR came to Michgan, and I can certainly see the arguement to replace him. I also can see the arguement to keep him for one more year (as long as we get a new Defensive staff). The thing is, I'm so drained from the whole thing, that I just don't care anymore what decision DB makes. If it's to keep RR, at least we'll see if he can do better in his 4th year, if he can, great, Michigan wins and we're all happy. If the team can't win after next year, no one would argue for another year. If however DB decides to bring in another coach, be it JH or whoever else, I will support his decision, the new coach, and the Team. I really just want the team to win. Regardless of what that takes (as long as we're not cheating, or being classless). IMO too many fans have let their hatered of RR blind them, and turn them into fans that no team needs. If you ever rooted against Michigan because you thought it would hasten the change of coaching staff, well, you should just join the taliban. With that, happy new year, and Go Blue!
Some of the soldiers I met in Afghanistan from an Arkansas National Guard engineer unit told me some things about this. Apparently, one of the soldiers cousins is friends with Mallett. He told me Mallett said he wasn't forced out. He liked Michigan, but preferred to be closer to home, and the coaching change, along with the new scheme (spread vs. pro) he figured it was a good time/excuse to transfer.
I realize this is considered hearsay, because I didn't hear it directly from the source, but these guys had no reason to lie about what their family member told them. I also saw pictures of the Soldier with his cousin, and his cousin with Mallett, so I consider this to be true information.
There are 2 things my 15 month old daughter loves to watch, one is "Jacks Big Music Show" on nick junior, and the other is Michigan football. She's been doing the touchdown sign since she was 8 months old. She was 2 days old during the Indiana game in 2009, I watched it while holding her in the hospital (we had to stay an extra couple days because she had a mild infection). She's on her way to being a die hard M fan like me. I also have converted my wife from a state fan to loving Michigan.
I understand what six-zero is saying in his post, and he's right about the cost and time associated with this. As another commenter said though, we don't know if this was the best one they offered or there were better ones that delaney didn't choose. I think one important thing to remember here though, is that one of the reasons we have logo's or marks is to put it on products to sell to consumers/fans. If 90% of the fanbase hates this thing, no one will buy the products that it is put on. In the grand scheme of things, it's used for many other things, and no one is going to not go to a school they want to because of the conference logo. However, I wouldn't buy anything that had this logo on it. I agree with another poster above who said that they missed the mark, and listened to "experts" instead of the public. You'll never make everyone happy, but usually you won't make everyone hate something either. As another poster commented as well, the majority of us are not experts in developing a brand logo/mark or anything like that, however the logos/marks are designed to get us to recognize the brand, and buy it. In that aspect we are experts because we are targeted every second of every day by brand marks/logos. We recognize and buy into ones that are good, and we avoid, ignore, and don't buy into ones that don't connect with us. In this case the Big Ten made a mistake and didn't connect with their target audience, and I believe it's in their best interest to start over and get another one. I am thinking of the long term, because I don't believe that the logo chosen will ever "grow" on me. It has absolutely no appeal to me, or most other fans. I can live with the trophys, hell, I can even live with the division names, I think they could have done better, but they also could have been much worse. The logo though, I don't think they could have done worse. I'm also not advocating hiding or even putting the number 12 in the logo, because seriously, it's not, and hasn't been for over a decade the actual number of teams in the league. It's simply the brand name.

Ok, I understand that everything is ultimately on the head coach, but here's my take.You have an offense that is just crazy good, yes they make mistakes some times, but they're pretty young still. They're scoring like 30 points per game, 67 in this one, and yet I still hear people say, we can't win in the big ten with this gimicky offense. Really? If we had even an average defense, we'd be undefeated. Our problems are on defense. That being said, today, despite giving up 65 points, and a boat load of yards, they did have some really good stops. Especailly that last one. I guess we need to watch them for the rest of the season. Either way, keep RR, because this offense is the way to go. If our defense doesn't improve, maybe bring in a different defensive staff, but for the love of god, don't get rid of RR. Who says we can't recruit the "smaller" faster guys to fill our offense, and have traditional big ten "bigger" guys for our defense? I haven't seen that rule, so if it exists, someone please provide a link.
the practice field in relation to the stadium? I've got a parking pass for Pioneer HS lot from a family member with season tickets, so I'll be parking there. What time should I show up? I'll be bringing my wife, father, and one of my wife's friends, because apparently all of my friends are state fans. As a disabled Army veteran now in Afghanistan as a contractor, I'll be streaming the game online for myself and a few of the Soldiers I support/work with who are big enough M fans to stay up and watch the game. Though noon games are better, the 3:30pm starts keep us up until around 4am. Every little bit helps the Soldiers over here, the moondust like dirt and constant wear of patrols tends to make clothing wear out faster, and in most of Afghanistan it's starting to get pretty cold. Where we are about 60km West of Kandahar City, summer temps were around 110-120 degrees, now, night time temps are dropping into the 40's, and it's about to get a lot colder. The Soldiers get issued cold weather gear, but warm socks would probably be greatly appreciated. Also, most of us love ramen noodles, beats the heck out of the food (and I use that term loosly) that the dining facility or mobile kitchen's serve. In case you didn't know, most of the food we eat is designated "for military and prison use only," and I'm not kidding or making that up. If you are planning on mailing anything to a Soldier/Sailor/Airmen/Marine over here, winter is the time you can mail most anything food related. During the summer, don't mail anything meltable, mail usually makes it to Kandahar Air Field, or Bagram Airfield within a few days from the states, there it sits in a shipping container, or on pallets, in the sun/elements, not environmentally controlled area until they can find space for it on a bird or convoy, larger packages usually sit longer than smaller, but many times, they sit for at least a week. In the summer anything you send that can melt, will. It's awesome that Michigan is doing this, and I'm sure Michigan fans will help support it. Us Michigan fans deployed over here appreciate all the prayers and support, and even the ranting on the boards, as it's a nice distraction from the reality on the ground over here. It's always better with a win, so let's hope we can pull it together for the rest of the games this year (particularly for Wisconsin since I'll be home on leave and have tickets!) GO BLUE! and God bless our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines, Veterans, and everyone who supports them.

Almost my entire family (including my wife) are MSU fans (from Petoskey by the way). Not sure how I ended up a Michigan fan, but I don't remember ever being a fan of any other school. My dad has 3 cousins who are M grads (back in the 70's). I joined the Army at 17 right out of high school. After almost 10 years I was medically chaptered, and I'm now working as a civilian over in Afghanistan (I wear maize and blue 3 days a week over here, and my Michigan hat everyday!) The reason I'm over here is to make enough money to go to school full time when I get home and still be able to support my wife and 1 year old daughter (who was 1 month old when I left to come over). She was born on the 24th of September last year and had to stay in the hospital for a few days because of an infection. I almost got into a fight with the nurse because I insisted that she be in my arms for the Michigan game against Indiana, and I watched it with her in the hospital. At any rate, I'm applying to Michigan for the winter 2012 semester hoping to get in for Computer Science. My fall back school is GVSU, I'd rather be unemployed than go to MSU.
Our defense did better than I expected. They were on the field for what 2/3 of the game. Now part of that is because they couldn't get the 3 and out, or stop 4th down conversions. But a big part of that was because our offense scored so fast. Our defense needs work, no one disputes that, but they don't flat out suck. We're talking about such young guys playing their 5th college game. To have so many young guys out on the field for so long, and still have them playing hard and not giving up, I'd say they deserve a lot more credit than they get. As to the recruiting arguement, I'm not a recruiting expert, nor am I any kind of football expert, but maybe RR recruited so much offensive talent instead of defense, because he wanted people to see his offense in action. Now that we have the offense rolling, we look way more appealing to defensive recruits. The good recruits now have a reason to consider Michigan, because they know we have the offense to put up points and win games, which can turn into championships. I think RR was right to recruit heavy on the offense to start out, because bringing in defensive players would have slowed down the development of the offense, leaving more doubt about his ability to put together this insane offense we have now. Oh, what else did i learn today? We are 5-0, and no matter what happens next week, for this week, I will enjoy being 5-0. Go Blue!

For Michigan, I expected us to be higher on revenue than we are, and I think most of us assumed that Michigan had a higher profit ammount. The thing is, the profit goes into a lot of other things. Not working in the Athletic Department, I can't say this for sure, but I would bet it gets reinvested into facilities, and to support other non revenue sports. There are a lot of programs who don't make any profit, and some that lose money. So paying players isn't likely to happen. I personally can't stand pro sports, once these guys start making the kind of money they do in the pros, it just loses something, and I don't enjoy it. I understand the reasons people want to pay college athleets, and I don't disagree that they should probably get something more than they do currently, but there do get a lot of benefits that other college kids don't. As for the non-scholarship players, I feel for them the most, as they probably have it rougher than many college students. However, that's their choice, if they don't want to do it, they don't have to. I personally would give anything to be able to make the Michigan football team. I don't know what the perfect answer is, but given the information I copied from espn above, I don't think that it's going to happen.
How many new threads do we need to discuss this topic, I'm pretty sure this is the 3rd. There isn't even any new information in this one. It's almost a copy/paste from the last one I read.
in case you didn't know, the point total to post was raised to 100 a few hours ago. I was at 85 points when it happened. I got an e-mail saying I could no longer start topics. Then when I went over 100 points, I got another e-mail saying I could start threads again. So, it was raised to 100, maybe not high enough in some members eyes, but at least it's better than it was.
I don't blame you for being selfish, I think any real fan would be in that situation. That's amazing, and I wish you luck on winning again, since I'm not a student, and can't compete with you, if I was a student, I'd find a way to sabotage you and win myself...j/k...sort of, lol. It looks like you had an awesome time. Thanks for documenting your experience on here. Maybe someday I'll be lucky enough (or rich enough) to do this myself. GO BLUE!
I'm deployed in Afghanistan, I've had to watch all the games on justin.tv so far. Except for the UMASS game, that wasn't broadcast by anyone unfortunately. I had to listen to it on internet radio.
I wonder if there are other sites that have had similar problems that we could learn from, instead of re-inventing the wheel. Either way, 20 points was too low, but I think 500 is too high. Either way, trolls will be trolls, and regardless of the point total to start a new thread, the trolls will probably still exist. Trolls are if nothing else dedicated to trolling. I'm pretty new to the mgoblog community, but I feel like I am a member of the community now, I think the time limit of 2 weeks plus a 100 point to start new posts makes the most sense. If we make the point total 500, or 1000, trolls can easily get that in 2 weeks anyways, the dedicated ones anyways, but the drive by trolling won't occur as much. At least that way we should only get the really dedicated (and often more amusing, though still annoying) trolls. Less total trolling, and easier moderating. As for quality of posts, I agree with what a lot of people are saying, quality doesn't come from a lot of mgopoints, and quality (value of a thought) of a post is not the same thing to everyone. Anyways that's my 2 cents. Got the e-mail a few minutes ago abou the point total being raised to 100, and even though I'm below 100, I don't have a problem with it.
seriously, I don't want a denard jersey, I'd like number 52. Don't ask why, I just do. Also, I'd like to point out that the "authentic" jerseys sold by mden and elsewhere are NOT the real deal what they wear on the field. They are missing a couple things like the interior shoulderpad imprints of the Big Ten championship years. The sleves are also wrong, as well as a couple of other things. I want a real jersey. I've googled the hell out of this, nothing is available that is a real Adidas home jersey, the "authentic" jerseys are close I guess, and I have 2 of them.

I always thought I'd get out of the Army, go to Michigan and try and walk on the team to get one the right way, but got my back fucked up instead, so no chance of that ever happening. Yeah, I spent most of the last decade in the Army (went in when I was 17), so I don't have the money to donate, or the relationships. Three or four of my dad's cousins are Michigan Alums, but they are pretty old now and say they don't know anyone around AA anymore. Though all of them are season ticket holders. I am not a season ticket holder, because of the reason I mentioned above. I was medically discharged last spring and am now working as a contractor over here, and when I'm done with my 2 years over here, I'm going to finally go to school full time (have to stay 2 years to make enough money to still support my wife and daughter while I go to school full time). I'm applying to Michigan (Computer Science), and GVSU where my wife went.
Sorry if you already explained this before, i'm new on the blog. How did you get the field pass? I'm coming home on leave from Afghanistan in November and have tickets to the Wisconsin game, is there a way I could get a pre-game (or full game lol) field pass? Thanks
I'm glad that the discussion has turned to no 9 game conference schedule. As another poster pointed out, with 12 teams, the 9th game doesn't really add anything. I'd much rather see M play an OOC opponent than another B10 team. I'd like to see us schedule better OOC opponents, not just creampuffs. I'd really like to see us start to schedule some teams that we haven't played before, or have only played once or twice. There are a lot of teams out there we've never played before. Not FCS, but FBS teams. I'd like to see M set a new record of having at least 1 win against every FBS team.
I'm pretty sure that there are FAR worse things we could be obsessed with. Everyone is obsessed with something. My wife has accused me of putting Michigan football over her and my daughter before (I'm 99% sure she was joking).

is it bad that I'm a computer engineer (no degree, but some certifications and lots of experience) but i'm not sure how to put a picture in here? Man I'm bad with blogs. I love it! Or I could have a few of the Soldiers I work with put on all their kit and stand behind me like I'm their militia leader or something, the possibilities are endless.
They are white, with the Blue M in the middle, a bar code on the right side (when horizontal). Section 24 Row B. That's why I was concerned that they might be fake, That's as close to mid field in the first row as I could get. Can anyone confirm that that's not in the student section, or a student ticket? If they're legit, I'm going to probably die at the game, especially if we win.
