It "worked" in 2011 because Michigan got lucky repeatedly; it did not in 2013 because they did not.
It felt like the lucky stone in Hoke's pocket from 2011 wasn't working last year. I remember hearing the sentiment after the 2011 season about how many good breaks went our way. 2013 must have been payment for all those breaks. Thinking last year's team had only one problem would be foolish, but then again Al Borges...

I suspect that you will be right by the end of the season on development. The lack of QB development under Borges was insanely atrocious. He had no clue how to utilize Denard and his utilization of Gardner was poor at best. Gardner is a warrior and given the right system, an offensive line that can block every once in a while, and the green light to use his athleticism, he will be more than just fine.
|3 days 21 hours ago||I got my tickets last week||
I got my tickets last week for ND. I am pretty pumped up for this season. Falling short at the finish seemed to be our plague last year (other than the MSU and KSU game) - MSU was the real deal last year and KSU we started a true freshman for his first time....in a bowl game. In the other four losses, we lost by a total of 11 points (2.75 PPG). If we can finish games down the stretch, that will be the difference in a 7-6 season capped by the Taxslayer Bowl and a 9 win season and a decent bowl game.
Just finish! We're getting older and we will be running a new offense with some pretty good talent. The talent is enough to keep us in every game - just finish!

|30 weeks 4 days ago||Football Outsiders Rankings as of Dec 7th||
From the website -
The Fremeau Efficiency Index (FEI) considers each of the nearly 20,000 possessions every season in major college football. All drives are filtered to eliminate first-half clock-kills and end-of-game garbage drives and scores. A scoring rateanalysis of the remaining possessions then determines the baseline possession efficiency expectations against which each team is measured. A team is rewarded for playing well against good teams, win or lose, and is punished more severely for playing poorly against bad teams than it is rewarded for playing well against bad teams.
Offensive and Defensive S&P+; F/+ Rankings
Success Rate: A common Football Outsiders tool used to measure efficiency by determining whether every play of a given game was successful or not. The terms of success in college football: 50 percent of necessary yardage on first down, 70 percent on second down, and 100 percent on third and fourth down.
EqPts Per Play (PPP): An explosiveness measure derived from determining the point value of every yard line (based on the expected number of points an offense could expect to score from that yard line) and, therefore, every play of a given game.
Drive Efficiency: As of February 2013, S&P+ also includes a drive-based aspect based on the field position a team creates and its average success at scoring the points expected based on that field position.
Opponent adjustments: Success Rate and PPP combine to form S&P, an OPS-like measure for football. Then each team's S&P output for a given category (Rushing/Passing on either Standard Downs or Passing Downs) is compared to the expected output based upon their opponents and their opponents' opponents. This is a schedule-based adjustment designed to reward tougher schedules and punish weaker ones.

|30 weeks 4 days ago||Offensive Rankings||
Rather than some cherry picked stats - these tell the tale of what we already knew from watching the season.
|30 weeks 4 days ago||Alabama and Michigan State||
Michigan averaged 5.5 tackles for loss per game. Michigan State averaged 6.2. Alabama averaged 5.2.
Michigan recorded 25 sacks on the season for an average of 1.9 per game. Michigan State recorded 31 sacks for an average of 2.3 per game. Alabama recorded 18 sacks for an average of 1.5 per game.
Also Michigan finished 28th on the season in Rush Defense for yards allowed. We can all probably agree that Alabama and Michigan State have elite defenses, no?
Where this defense got torched was in the pass game - #61 in YPG allowed and 12.28 YPC average is pretty bad. Scoring defense was also a dismal #64 giving up 26.5 PPG.

Of all active FBS coaches, Urban Meyer has the highest win percentage (0.842) and the FBS coach closest to him is Bob Stoops (0.803). Other highlights include 2 National Championships and a 7-1 bowl record. If he isn't qualified to coach any school anywhere, then I'm not sure who other than Nick Saban (4 National Championships in the last 10 years) might be. I don't like Urban Meyer for obvious reasons, but saying he isn't elite is just not true.

Auburn did nto receive any votes in the preseason poll. MSU was the top "vote-getting" team outside of the top 25. Auburn made their big leap up when they beat then #7 Texas A&M. That win moved them from #24 to #11. They lost the same day that MSU lost too (Sept. 21) and both dropped out of the polls. MSU didn't have a signature win until they beat us (we were ranked #21 at the time). The timeline looked like this -
Both teams continued to climb the polls as they continued to win; the difference was the big jump made by beating a top 10 team - which MSU didn't have mid-season.

The difference with the NFL is that there are quite a few players just like Gallon in every draft, every year. Of those players, the ones that make it stay for several years. It's great to be proud of your team and its players, but at some point you have to be realistic.
He's 5'8" tall and weighs less than 190lbs. His 40 time is slower than the 5 recievers ahead of him that are the same height as him in this year's draft. I will root for him to become a future NFL star, but admitting that the odds are stacked against him doesn't make me wrong, it just means I understand reality.

I don't think he will win 5 more either. I think his legacy will be his career from '97 to '08. That span was him taking the golf world by storm, the golf world catching up to him for a couple years, and then him going back to dominating the competition. It was a fun era in golf to watch the "who can stop Tiger show."
|50 weeks 4 days ago||Yup||
Over his career Tiger has a higher rate of major wins per year than Nicklaus (TW 0.875 majors per year versus JN 0.750 majors per year). Nicklaus won his final major at the age of 46 at the Masters. Tiger is currently 37 years old which leaves him plenty of time to win a few more.
Nicklaus was dominant from '62 to '78 winning 15 of his 18 career majors during that span.
Tiger won 14 over an 11 year span '97 to '08. However, he has not won since '08 and that has people waiting for him to pop the bubble. I think once he does that, he has a couple more majors in him.
Tiger from '97 to '08 was hands down the best golf has ever seen. Tiger from '08 to '13 has been pretty darn mediocre.

Gunderson/Strobel – Gunderson awkwardly gets Strobel upright and Stobel releases at the perfect time to make the play. +1 Gunderson for leverage. +1 Strobel for shedding the block. -1 Gunderson for losing contain.
Gunderson 0, Strobel 1
G. Glasgow/Pipkins – Pipkins easily gets himself free to make the play. A great show of power by Pee Wee. +1 Pipkins for power. +1 Pipkins for shedding the block.
Glasgow 0, Pipkins 2

This game was a show of respect to Denard. The fact they put him in the game knowing he couldn't throw the ball said so much for the respect they had for him. If Borges was worried about his legacy as a coach, he would have played Gardner all game and left Denard on the bench.

Except for the presence of Russell Wilson on the list, I might agree with you.
Also, his height was in question, and his height isn't the end of his career as those quarterbacks prove. I'm not sure how pointing out a few exceptional quarterbacks with a similar build fails to make the point I intended -
He can make it and his height doesn't have to be a limiting factor.

Good read, thanks for taking the time to write this up.
In regards to a 3 star QB - I can't say how accurate recruiting rankings are, and I know that the work has been done to show which services are more accurate - but I can say that sometimes they are wrong. Examples of 3 star (to Rivals) quartebacks who had decent college careers -
Unfortunately, the list of 3 stars who never saw the field is much, much longer. I think the goal when recruiting a 3 star is always that you hope for the exception, and sometimes you might get it. For Bellomy, I think the case may be that the sample size is too small to make that call. At the beginning of the season, we are always talking about how vanilla the offensive scheme is. This is to give the offense a chance to work up to the speed of conference play. Bellomy hasn't really been in any situations that would prepare him for that, and that is [insert blame here]. He was clearly overwhelmed by the speed of the game.

You are right about the MSU game as it pertains to winning the B1G championship. If we had beaten MSU last year we would have been playing Wisconsin in Indy. I don't think this statement is entirely accurate though -
While it is always the goal to win a B1G championship, the Notre Dame game was an important factor in our Sugar Bowl appearance. Had Michigan State beaten Notre Dame they would have been higher in the rankings with only 2 losses, after their loss to Wisconsin. That would have given them a small chance to get a BCS invite, which they were not going to get with 3 losses. In the end, neither Michigan or Michigan State got what they wanted (the B1G title) but it was Michigan that went to a BCS bowl game and not Michigan State, and you could argue that the Notre Dame game was the difference.

There also appears to be about a 50 pound variance in weight between the players. Two guys at 330 and 320; two guys at 280 and 270? That would make for some interesting decisions on both sides of the ball, depending on how heavy or light they decided to go.

But am skeptical of State's ability to do this -

The 3 Spartan losses this year share something in common - all of the opponents have rushed for more than 100 yards. The 4 Spartan wins also share something in common. Those opponents all rushed for less than 100 yards. Also, we ran the ball effective enough on Notre Dame, who is similar to Sparty, that we should be able to get 150+ yards on the ground.

|1 year 41 weeks ago||I agree that I felt sympathy for him then, but||
playing for a horse's ass that plays him while concussed doesn't by default make him any less of an ass. It just makes him an ass playing for a horse's ass that shouldn't have been playing. I don't wish Dantonio on anyone either, but at some point you have to be accountable for your decisions; playing for Dantonio could come at a high price. My only hope is that young players witnessed how carelessly Dantonio put his player's life at risk that day.
If he can play a clean game versus Michigan this year and refrain from punching players, trying to break people's arms, and treating our quarterback's head like a twist off beer cap - my opinion of him might change a little. He has claimed that he is misunderstood, after Saturday we will see how much of a "changed man" he really is. My suspicion is that he hasn't changed all that much.

|1 year 41 weeks ago||Here's the OFEI and DFEI||
Here's the OFEI and DFEI ratings and national rankings last year and this year -
The 2011 Michigan offense was better by the end of the season than 2012 Michigan is through 5 games, and we don't know how Michigan will end the year, but there is room for improvement offensively. The same could be said for the defense.
This all comes with the huge disclaimer that is our schedule. 5 home games in 2011 versus these defensive teams.
3 road games and 2 home games in 2012 versus these opponents.
The numbers speak to what we figured before the season; this would be a difficult schedule early on. On paper right now, 2011 Michigan is better than 2012 Michigan through 5 games. The question is - will that be true after the season is over for 2012 Michigan?
|1 year 41 weeks ago||I'm not going to say you're wrong||
This is borderline even in the most defensible case. I do think this could be a great topic, and have some good discussion, but it didn't start out that way. It was the presentation that merited the "snowflake" label.
|1 year 41 weeks ago||Great stuff||
Also, opponent adjusted S&P+ rankings show some interesting things, and they pretty much agree with your analysis on Denard. Right now Michigan is 4th best in the country when it comes to making successful plays. If we can limit turnovers, we should be just fine the rest of the year.

To add more data to the discussion, last year Illinois was 11th in S&P+ defense rating in the country, and 3rd in the B1G. By comparison, they are 72nd in S&P+ defense rating in the country and 11th in the B1G.
Last year Michigan's offense was 10th in S&P+ offense rating in the country and 2nd in the B1G. This year Michigan is actually 4th in S&P+ offense rating in the country and 1st in the B1G. The scary thing about that if you are an Illinois fan is that the ratings haven't been updated for the Purdue game yet.

We should beat Illinois soundly. Anything less would be a disappointment. I also don't think too many people were surprised by the preview this week. Illinois has some real problems this year and it will only get worse next year. They will lose 7 senior starters and all but one of those positions is backed up by a freshman. The one position that isn't backed up by a freshman is a sophomore. I'm not even sure that "the cupboard is bare" begins to cover the shape of Illini football right now.

I think if Denard had "gotten away" with some of the back foot throws against Notre Dame, and Michigan would have won (as they really should have), the Purdue game would probably be a trap game.
However, we lost and Denard's decisions are going to be highly influenced by his Notre Dame performance. I don't think we're going to see Denard go all gunslinger unless we can't get the running game going. The tight ends are going to be his best friends if he is getting pressure, that should be his check down, especially with Purdue's semi-bad linebackers/safeties.
