I know it seems too early for him BUT

I know it seems too early for him BUT I think heshould be a serious candidate. Let me first put out a disclaimer that I have a connection to Coach Stoops through being from his hometown and friends who are related, so call me biased if you must.

That being said, I've been following Kentucky very closely (including attending one of their games) this year due to Michigan's great season so far. So far he's done a great job at a basketball school and in the toughest conference in college football.

He has a high motor and is a great recruiter, but beyond that I can tell you that in YEAR 2 at a school that has had 4 wins over the past couple years combined, he has UK looking remarkedly better than the current Michigan Team. He uses several different formations on offense, isn't afraid to mix it up, and has a VERY aggressive defense.

His coaching resume is solid along with the obvious coaching pedigree. He was DB coach for some of the great Miami teams and  he was the man responsible for building Florida State's national championship defense last year. He has midwest ties, florida ties, and SEC ties.

In summary, if the Michigan coaching job came open NEXT December, I believe Coach Stoops would be considered a top 5 candidate for the job. This year may be a different story but I think it would be smart for UM to at least consider him.

I've watched Ohio all year...

I've watched every Ohio tv game this year and every michigan game this year, so I feel I may have some perspective here. Admittedly, I am an Ohio grad so they have a soft spot in my heart when they make a run to the big dance.

I told myself before selection Sunday that I was going to bet (not necessarily take to win) Ohio in any first round matchup that came up. The one thing they have going for them is that they are absolutely fearless and will force the tempo whether Michigan wants it or not. I think the game comes down to limiting turnovers and knocking down some shots for Michigan. I believe Beilein is too good of a coach to not have a gameplan put together for such an overagressive defensive team.

That being said I totally expect this game to be close until the end unless Ohio is cold from the field. DJ Cooper is good (not Burke) but where he will hurt you is his streak shooting. If he's on, OU will be in the game and have a chance to win. I also expect Reggie Keely to draw fouls on Morgan which can invoke the Beilein "Two Foul Rule" which I feel should be tossed out the window in the tourney.

In the end, I'll take Michigan by 5 due to Burke and Beilein. Needless to say I will be skitzo during this game. Go Blue! (don't blow out my alma mater?)

The key will

The key will be to slow down DJ Cooper. He seems to get hot around this time of year. He is a very streaky shooter and a big time play maker. The big guys are capable of knocking down shots and giving us a little trouble. I've watched this team all year and they look at their best right now.

Long story short, if Ohio is shooting the ball well this is going to go down to the wire. Michigan's defense is the key along with being careful with the ball. They play up tempo, so it will be key to play at UM's pace.

My worst nightmare...

Ohio is my alma mater. I've been following them all year, they are pretty good. They have a good point guard in D.J. Cooper and they are deep.  Most of the players that were on the team that scored 98 points on Georgetown in the tournament a few years ago are on this team. My guess is that the line will be 5 points. Go Blue (i think ha).

I like the potential Temple draw in the 3rd round though.

FWIW

FWIW, the latest rumor I've heard down here in Columbus (comes from someone who is friends with an OSU athletic board/committee member/rich man) is that the latest name being tossed around is, "a big name, but not the big name you are thinking of."

I translate that to mean "not Urban Meyer, but someone else big time."  I know this isn't overly informative but it does come from a pretty solid source and may point to someone else BESIDES Urban Meyer.

I would say..

I would say that your description is pretty much spot on. I would not be surprised if special counsel is brought in by the AG's (which is quite common in some areas of law).

634 be the number.

Starting to become,

Starting to become my favorite diary. I really enjoy them, keep it up and much appreciated.

I have 3 that come to mind...

1. 1997 UM v. tOSU: I'll never forget that day for more than one reason but the one that really sticks out is when the "Go Blue" chant started (the one in which one side says Go and other says Blue), the entire stadium was shaking. It was unreal.

2. 2005 PSU: I was sitting next to two of my friends who were PSU fans, when the clock showed zero, I unleashed my drunken celebration and then continued to sip my flask.

3. 1995?: Mercury Hayes, corner of the end zone to beat Virginia.

GO BLUE

Sure to be way off...

A. Alabama

B. Oklahoma State

C. Virginia Tech

D. Notre Dame

E. Southern Cal

Unranked: BYU

Believe it or not

Believe it or not this is a true story. I wouldn't call it a riot every year but when they kick you out an hour early the entire strip (Court Street which has 18 or so Bars) takes to the street and makes a scene at the very least. Nothing too crazy, just another reason to be drunk students.

As an OU (Ohio University Grad)...

As an OU grad I can only tell my fellow MGobloggers that this ranking is well-deserved for better or worse. I had a blast the four years I was there and it is a great little college town with a perfect atmosphere for parties. That being said, I am not happy with the extra 20 lbs I still carry around because of it. For those who are still young enough to have an excuse to make college road trips on this board, I suggest you do your best to make it down there if you know anyone. Parties are great and girls aren't afraid to have fun.

Semi-Proud OU 2006 Alum.

From my experience...

From my experience as an attorney in Ohio, OSU looks to be in a bad position with this suit. I'm familiar with Ohio's public records laws and it seems to me that unless FERPA applies, they will have to release all the records requested in accordance with state law.

This could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. I've heard from multiple people i trust, that more than just Tressel knew about the violations before this all came down.

Popcorn.

Nice,

Nice, I used to frequent Skye Bar from time to time. I wish you luck in your own business and at the OSU event. If/when you get your own venue, be sure to let us Wolverines in Columbus know. Go Blue!

As said below...

As said below in the "family thread" I guarded LeBron James in the 2002 State Semis... However, I met Michael Jordan, so anyone else that I've met really doesn't matter in my mind...

bwgrudt1484 - if you don't mind letting me know, what bar/club do you run/own here in Columbus? I live downtown so I'm curious. If you don't want to answer, no big deal I understand.
This 6'1" white dude...

This 6'1" white dude guarded LeBron James in the 2002 State Semi-Finals and managed to hold him to 32 points... At least I held him to his average haha! (good to see he's an ass-hat now).

Possibility of more to come (stress possibility)...

Per the same source (OSU Alum with connections to people surrounding the Rife case) who told me about "Tatt Gate" 5 days before it came out originally:

The Dispatch and ESPN are looking into the allegations that Eddie Rife "owns or owned" some of the players involved in the tattoo parlor scandal. This obviously points towards point shaving or some type of fixing. My source claims that this has been said but its just a matter if they are going to be able to come up with credible evidence to even write a story about it.

Whether this ever turns out to be anything I'm not sure but this guy was spot on last time. Also, i looked at the results versus the spread and over/unders and I saw nothing fishy from last year... Maybe its old though.

If this turns out to have any truth at all, this will officially sink titanic. Stay tuned.

Brian hit the nail on the head...

with the analogy of the warden in Shawshank Redemption. In fact, Cowherd just made the same comparison on his show. I currently live in Columbus (ugh) and it feels like this thing isn't over. GO BLUE

Well since it doesn't specifically say individual nicknames so

I'm going to be Captain Obvious and say "The Fab Five" hands down.

FWIW

The rumor floating around down here (Columbus) is that someone within the Athletic Department not named Gordon Gee or Gene Smith knew about the allegations. This would go a long way towards the NCAA revising their notice of allegations to include lack of institutional control.

This rumor comes from the same group that told me about the "Tat 5" four days before it came out. Some of their details were off the first time around, so as the title suggests, take this FWIW.

ps- LOVE being down here while this is going on (maybe the only time I can enjoy being a UM fan down here in recent years)

Facilities...

FWIW, I sat next to Amir Williams (b-ball recruit from Detroit who chose OSU over UM) on an airplane recently and asked him point blank why he didn't choose UM and his main reason was because "the facilities were terrible compared to OSU's."  He also said that he didn't think the coaching staff showed enough him enough attention (wahh wahhh). The latter statement will cause me to hate him for the next two or three years as he plays for the buckeyes.

That all being said, its pretty clear that this facility is going to help with the big time recruits when it is finished.

How much longer

How much longer do we have to wait as fans to have a good football team. My patience is wearing and I will spontaneously combust if we don't win 8 games this year. The schedule is beyond favorable and the offense can't be 2008 bad with the returning starters UM has. Either way, I will start to walk the plank if they don't win 8 games BEFORE bowl season. (pity party over here).

My top ten...

1. 1988 - Bulls v. Cavs: Jordan hits the shot over Ehloe.

2. 1997 - Michigan v. Ohio State: Charles Woodson

3. 1999 - Final Four (UCONN, Duke, OSU, MSU in Tampa): I had ridiculous seats and sat next to Roger Clemens and John Wooden, right behind Duke's bench.

4. 2002 - Poland High School v. Akron St. Vincent St. Mary's: My high school team reached the State Final Four in Ohio and played LeBron James & Co. I got to guard him and he subsequently killed me/us but it was in front of state record crowd (this was right after his SI cover came out).

5. 2005 - Michigan v. Penn State: Super Mario

6. 2006 - Michigan v. Ohio State: Terrible Outcome but the build up to #1 v. #2 was incredible.

7. 2008 - NCAA 1st Round Tournament Games in Tampa: Both 12 seeds (Villanova, Western Kentucky) and Both 13 seeds (San Diego and Siena) upset the lower seeds. The games included 2 buzzer beaters and a triple OT.

8. 2007 - Red Sox v. Indians Game 5: Red Sox down 3-1 in the series. Beckett takes the mound and dominates. Plus this led to an epic drunk night.

9. 2002 - Michigan v. Washington: Phil Brabbs

10. 2004 - Michigan v. Notre Dame: Best combination of tailgating, seats, and after party at a game. Plus it was a 38-0 win.

Bonus -1998 - King of the Ring: Mankind v. Undertaker (the infamous hell in a cell match)

This is...

absolutely spot on and hilarious. Living in this dump has given me some overdue satisfaction by watching them all slowly turn on Tressel. These are the same people who kissed the ground he walked on before this happened. Others are in total denial of whats to come.

New Castle and then onto...

Crown Royal as the night progresses... Having some guys over for some pre-game poker before we head out.  Should be a good night. GO MAIZE and BLUE tomorrow!

Yes typo on my part... I

Yes typo on my part... I thought you were referring to the sports station down here.. well classic rock station didn't do a good job of making those jokes believable then!!

Anyways, good day.  GO BLUE

Let's end this thread now...

Not to be an April Fool's Party Pooper but... you didn't hear it on 97.3 because that's not even the sports station down here, its 97.1.  Also, Mike and Mike are on until 10 am down here followed by Cowherd.

Continue on fellow MGoers.

Hmmm...

I haven't looked it up but I remember there being a number of appeals and delays in the O'Brien case even after it was deemed "final" the first time.  So maybe they are on to something here but I could be wrong. (we can only hope theyre right).

Well...

Well... to say the least your weekends will change.  I live here as a Michigan fans amongst family and friends who love the *uckeyes.  You will catch every Michigan football and b-ball game on tv due to regional coverage and BTN, so no worries there.

You will not find a Michigan Bar here etc... If you are able to stay south of campus, you will really enjoy the city FWIW.  I love the arena district and the short north has a few good bars too.  However, don't expect to escape almost every idiot talking about the *uckeyes. Some of the most rewarding moments come when you watch the *uckeyes fail in a bar of mainly tOSU fans.. So you'll have that too, unfortunately those haven't happened too often the past 5 years.

It's a rough life but it can be done with some sanity. The drive to AA is only 3 hours away.

Good Luck and Go Blue!

Not to nit pick but...

Youngstown is a 3.5 hour drive to the stadium.  Needless to say its not exactly a short drive.  I am going to hit up some contacts I have back at home (youngstown) to see what the story is if I can.

Go Blue

C-Webb

I must first admit that Chris Webber remained my favorite player until he retired from the NBA. My love for his game started at Michigan with the Fab Five and continued on with the Warriors, Bullets, Kings etc... While he is undoubtedly the best basketball player to ever come out of Michigan, he is also is seen as the 1 person who brought the program down because of his transactions with Ed Martin (which I'm not sure is fair).

I do agree with most people that he should mend his relationship with the University at some point down the road.  But I do not think he actually owes anything to Michigan. The minute they tried to sue him for restitution is when I knew things would never be the same.  They made so much money off the Fab Five and Chris and now they were ready to throw him completely under the bus for making an idiotic mistake as a 19 year old kid.  They took the banners, they banned him from the university and placed most of the blame on him for everything that has happened since 1997. That should have been enough, instead they went for the throat of 1 person.

Either way, I hope Chris can reconcile with the University and the Fab Five can help with recruiting (under the NCAA bylaws of course).

Save the WalMart Wolverine crap...

Try being a HUGE Michigan fan in Columbus for the past 6 years.  Yes, that's me, and NO I didn't go to UM mainly because I was waitlisted and out of state tuition is astronomical. When people make comments like this it makes me want them to live in my shoes everday in Columbus, OH as a Michigan fan.  (yes I know its my choice to live here but I am slightly landlocked due to family and the Ohio BAR)

188

188 - Go Blue

It has to be Woodson's INT

I distinctly remembering watching that game and thinking to myself, "there is no way he brought that down in bounds."

He was by far the best player to grace a football field that year in CFB.  The Peyton Manning Whiners can go to hell. GO BLUE (BEAT SPARTY)

Better Late Than Never

Due to my basketball career, this is actually the FIRST game I'll ever see in Crisler... I don't think I could have picked a better game. GO BLUE!

Bernards

Go to Bernards in the Short North.  The menu isn't great but its a good space and has good flatscreens that are in view anywhere you sit in the place... GO BLUE

Could be.. but

Your logic would also make Oklahoma, Arizona, Florida State, Ohio State, Kent State, etc... all guilty since all of their head coaches or Coordinators are products of Youngstown.

Don't Do It

I went to law school here in Ohio.  It is a miserable job market.  However, if you are planning on being top of your class its still a good profession to land a job.  Otherwise, unless the economy bounces back soon, I suggest you do something else besides law school.  My loans are astronomical and I wasn't top of my class, so my salary is miniscule and i am part of the working poor. Just my two cents.

Wellman Information

I have a buddy who is a high school coach out in Las Vegas, who is a HUGE tOSU fan, and he texted me the other day not to worry about losing Barwis if Wellman was going to come with Hoke.

He met him during camp and watched some of their workouts and said the guy is awesome.  For example, apparently if you don't put up the weight or reps you were supposed to during a workout, Wellman hangs a picture and your name on the ouside of the weightroom door letting the rest of the team know what the player failed to do.  Name doesn't come down until he meets certain goals.

Like I mentioned before, this comes from a HUGE tOSU fan who loves to rank on me about what Michigan does wrong.  So take this FWIW.

How about

Alabama last year?

YOU ARE

FREAKING OUT, MAN!

A.H.

"Let him go, he's on a roll..."

Agreed

I couldn't agree more about how HARD these guys play.  It feels/looks like more of a team than last year.  However, the shooting woes are sometimes inexplicable even though Kansas's D had a lot to do with it yesterday.  They have to practice shooting all day long in his system and it just doesn't seem to translate to games very well.  Overall, though, I am content and a little surprised at how well the team is playing for now.

Next Coach

Honestly, the only coach I would be excited for now is Gruden.  Which I know is another pipe dream.  I guess I should just go and start smoking out of a pipe until this is all over so I don't feel anything, i.e. "comfortably numb."

Pleaseee

It just goes to tell you how desperate I am following this coaching situation... Your post has me all up in arms with excitement knowing that it probably isn't true.  So for the sake of my sanity, try and legitimize this rumor for us because he was easily my second dream choice after Harbaugh.  His recruiting ability will be unmatched.  Plus he has studied the spread at Oregon and Florida for the past three years. Please let this be true. Shed some light...

The coach will be announced at...

My thoughts are that no matter who the new head coach is, he will definitely be introduced to the fans at halftime of the Ohio State basketball game next Wednesday.  This satisfies the one week "state job posting rule," and hopefully it will be JH or Miles saying, " Go F yourself Columbus, OH"
