The Game is the best in my…

The Game is the best in my heart. As far as how much it means to a country or individuals, there is a soccer rivalry in Argentina between Boca Juniors and River Plate which is dangerously intense. In 2018 they had to move a Copa Libertadores game between the two teams to Spain because fans of River Plate attacked the Boca Juniors team. bus. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/46392340#:~:text=The%20second%20leg%20of%20the,bus%20by%20River%20Plate%20fans.

Maximum Effort is correct. A high ankle sprain is related to the syndesmotic membrane between the tibia and fibula as well as the anterior tibiofibular ligament.

An injury to the deltoid ligament is usually referred to as a medial ankle sprain as opposed to the more common lateral ankle sprain. Though it is not uncommon to have a deltoid ligament sprain concurrently with a syndesmotic ankle sprain.

High ankle sprains can be complex from a management standpoint. If you do not allow the syndesmosis and/or the anterior tibiofibular to heal every time you move into a loaded dorsiflexed position, such as with the foot planted and the knee flexed, you are causing more potential trauma to the injured structures. If the patient does not manage well with conservative treatment then surgery may be necessary.

I would think in the case of DPJ, due to the fact that he played on Saturday, the trainers are comfortable with the healing process, and are allowing him to play without restrictions.

First, good luck in whatever

First, good luck in whatever program you choose to attend. I graduated from PT school from UW- La Crosse which is hands down the best DPT program in the country. However, in my interactions with students that have attended UM-Flint they have spoken highly of the education. I would recommend that you get on Twitter and ask your question with #dptstudent and see if you get any replies. Again, good luck in school. It's not easy, but it is worth it!

Contact vs non-contact

I love this write-up. Talking about ACL tears and potential causes gets me excited.

I haven't reviewed any videos of Johnson's ACL tears, but weren't both of them related to contact? I understand your point of loading the ACL and putting it into a vulnerable position for rupture, but to my understanding most of that gets thrown out the window during a contact related ACL injury.

I also question the ability to verify knee internal rotation with a 2D image. In our instrumentation class during PT school we assessed 2D vs 3D imaging for knee internal rotation during a step-down task. 2D imaging is not a valid assessment for knee internal rotation, and perspective error can give you all sorts of strange results.

This ACL question is huge. I wish there were better methods of preventing the ruptures from happening. Even high quality exercise programs meant to prevent non-contact tears don't work for most people.

Research

I appreciate your theory on enthusiasm's role vs evidence based practice. I agree with the role that positive psychology has in a person making great gains. I think one of the most critical characteristics of any coach is the ability to inspire an athlete to do the impossible.
However, I do not think these things have to be exclusive. We can have the best of both worlds! An enthusiastic, inspiring and charismatic strength coach who utilizes available research! I also don't discredit the value of trial and error (research will always lag behind clinical practice).
I know a lot of people (myself included) were excited about potentially getting Stanford's S&C coach because he seems to be ahead of the game in both arenas (although using a functional movement assessment before implementing strength training hardly seems 'cutting edge').
In the end I think I will wait to pass judgement on the current S&C staff until the 4th quarter of the first game in SLC. If the team can keep up in that environment I will take that as a sign of good things to come!

One month gains

Most literature supports the idea that hypertrophy typically happens starting at 4-6 weeks. Most changes prior to this are usually attributed to neurological changes. However, I do recognize that high level athletes are typically the exception and not the rule. I do not think 50 lb improvements in major lifts are going to happen in 1 month unless that is the only focus of the program ( even then I am doubtful).
I also wish we could slow down the ACL talk around here unless we are willing to differentiate between contact and non-contact ACL injuries. We also have to consider that non-contact ACL injuries can be due to a host of other factors not related to quads, hamstrings, and hip abductors strength.

Hikes

I have only stayed at the Park City Resort condos, and the Marriott in Park City. Deer Valley is near Park City, and it will give you access to all of the local shops, and restaurants in the area.

As far as hikes go I recommend Mount Olympus. It is a little more challenging, but the views from the top can be spectacular. The hike to Lake Blanche is easier, and gives you a different perspective of the mountains (and you can keep walking to 2 other close by lakes). If you have extra time and want more challenge the hike to the top of Mount Timpanogos is always a popular one (it takes roughly 8-10 hours).

If you are more interested in a casual drive, you can drive up to Empire Pass (it is right outside of Park City). It is a short drive that leads you out of the valley area.

I am sure either way you will have a blast. The Univeristy of Utah is in a cool location, and you can enjoy the view of the foothills from the stadium. Although the stadium is small, it can get loud, and Utah fans are passionate.

Good luck and have fun!

(and congratulations to you and your fiance)

Utah is beautiful

Zion's National Park is really beautiful. The mountains of northern Utah are really beautiful in early September. If you are wanting to stay near SLC you should consider Park City. It is somewhat overpriced, but it does give you a unique place to stay in the mountains.

I am not sure what your hobbies are (besides watching football), but I tell everyone who visits Utah to go on a hike to the top of a mountain. There are hikes to match all physical abilities, and some of the most beautiful hikes are just south of the University of Utah.

I wish I could attend the game. I will be in SLC from June 1st to August 26th. So close. I will have to watch Michigan beat my alma mater on TV. I will be at the Minnesota game though!

Non-contact vs Contact

I wonder if anyone has documented whether the recent ACL tears have been contact or non-contact related. Strength training has limited relationship to ACL injuries that are caused by a contact force to the knee.
I do think that quality strength training can prevent more of the nagging soft tissue injuries from occurring, but we should be cautious when trying to associate blame for an ACL injury.

Water buffalo!

I am not in favor of recruiting water buffalo. I agree with the need for power training that improves the ability to deliver a blow. I also agree with your previous comments that training for hypertrophy is not really functional for football players. I honestly don't know what kind of exercise program the S&C people have the players doing, so I do not feel that I can assign blame to them for any of the injuries or losses soley on them. I do think that resistance training programs for athletes, and non-athletes, need to focus on triplanar movements. Functional movment is tri-planar and training should focus on function.
Previously in this thread the S&C program at Stanford was mentioned. IIRC there was a great deal of news about how their program decreased injuries by doing a functional movement screen on their players prior to the season and then accommodating their specific training to address any limitations. I think this should be an area focus for sports at all levels, especially high school. Although, I am not aware of any high quality studies that show the a functional movment screen can significantly decrease the prevalence of injuries among football players.
I appreciate that you have found success in working with trigger points and myofascial release. I have no problems with people practicing it according as they see fit, to reach their desired outcomes. I only bring up the fact that there is a great deal lacking in RCTs for trigger point therapy, and every time I ask individuals for the physiologic rationale behind these therapies there answers are different, and usually lack a sound knowledge of physiology.
I will admit that my experience is still lacking. I am a second year physical therapy student with a BS in exercise and sport science. Give me another 24 years to get more patient care under my belt! I do appreciate the medical discussion on the blog. I don't post a lot, so this has given me a chance to come out of my shell.

ACL's

The "cause " of an injury/tear of the ACL is much more profound than strength training. There may be some validity to muscular imbalances, quads:hamstrings, leading to and ACL tear, but there are also congenital variables such as the Q-angle or the slope of the tibia relative to the femur that play a role. To assume that the strength and conditioning methods are the 'cause' of these injuries is rather presumptive. Research in this area is expanding, but as of now is only based on retrospective or prospective studies. The only way to give causation to an ACL injury is to hook up some markers to an individual as well as bone pins to the tibia and femur and needle EMG to all of the muscles crossing the knee joint and do motion analysis while they tear their ACL. I don't think a study like this will be happening in the near future.

It is also worth noting that the existence of trigger points is debatable. While there are individuals with increased tone in their muscles and some people likely do have fascial tightness or certain tender points it is difficult to assess their existence. When therapists have been studied on their ability to palpate a trigger point their inter-rater reliability was worse than chance. Maybe they exist, there is just too little quality research for me to have an opinion either way.

Flexibility is a key component of training as is joint stability, but making that the key focus of training and then asking a defensive lineman to push against a 300+ pound offensive lineman sounds like a recipe for disaster. Should they be addressing these areas in training? Sure. However, there are time restrictions on how much you can do.

Wife

This would be great, but I heard that his wife loves the Green BAY area. She would never leave. We would have to pay him a ton of money to get him here.

Maybe

I think there is a chance I took his seat in intro to spanish, and he has forever hated me. I don't know man. I guess the streets of Orem, UT are just full of thugs waiting to punch athletes. Maybe user, UofMUT can come on and elaborate on the story.

Cool story bro

My 'cool story bro' moment from this event is that my brother is the PA for UVU sports. He hasn't given me the full story yet on the incident, but it looks pretty wild on the videos. I would like to think my one semester at UVU did not somehow contribute to this nightmare, but I will never know.

27, Male, from Utah

27, male, graduated from the University of Utah in 2012 (ESS major) now living in La Crosse, WI for physical therapy school. 2 kids and one wife of 5 years. My dad graduated from Pioneer HS in the 70's then did one year of school at UofM, he sang in the glee club, so I was raised listening to him sing songs about Michigan. My first Michigan memory was watching Desmond catch the end zone TD against Notre Dame. Zoltan is my Emperor.

I see what you did there.

There is an ample amount of salt in Utah. As a Jazz fan I am very excited about this move. I think Trey can fill a great need for the team. I have also heard that the Jazz are actively pursuing John Stockton as an assistant coach. So, maybe Trey can learn from one of the best point guards.

+1

+1 to you good sir.

Good clip but...

I think the play was great but, I hated watching the clip due to the CFB scores at the end.

SIAP

When I read the title I thought for sure that the OP had simply forgotten that this had been posted a few weeks ago. Then I clicked on the thread and boy was I wrong. I feel bad for all these guys getting injured, but the running back situation at Iowa has become comical.

Houma has a lot of potential

I saw Sione Houma play last season in his last game, and I do believe he has a lot of upside. His weight is rather low for a fullback, but his legs are huge.
I do believe that it will take him awhile to get used to the college game. Utah is not a breeding ground for great high school football. The coaches don't make very much money and there are not a ton of quality camps in the state.
IMO Houma could develop into similar type of players that I have seen play fullback at BYU, like Fui Vakapuna. If this were the case then Michigan might be able to establish a very solid inside running game.

This thread is way better than my night class

I would much rather discuss this game than listen to a lecture about diffusing defense mechanisms.

Michigan Wins

UM-28 ND-24

Also Denard throws for two touchdowns and adds another on the ground.

Finally, Lou Holtz dies drowning in his own saliva as ND does not reach his expectations yet again.

I loved the video until...

Doug Karsch stabbed me in the face, and reminded me of the Colorado touchdown.

MSU looking ahead?

Was MSU looking ahead to next week against FAU? Their defense looks to be mentally checked out of this one.

Fumble the Punt Return!

Let's Go YSU!

Plenty of Hoke pointing

That video had its fair share of Hoke pointing! I can't wait to see the magic point manana!

I probably won't sleep tonight.

I will stay up all night doing the extra kinesiology homework I have for the holiday weekend, so I can focus on football and football only tomorrow. My wife is already dreading it.

Dave Brandon was like "Wow"

Did anyone else notice around 51 seconds that Dave Brandon had a "wow" experience when he saw the boards? In honor of this video, the first time I see the new boards I will also stop shake my head and non vocally say "Wooooow".

Yes

A million times yes! I've been waiting all day for this! I will now be able to sleep!

Seriously the best game of the night

This game is keeping me up. The two teams seem to be mistake prone with pretty weak offenses. Let's go WKU!

Sione Houma

Can Sione Houma realistically get a 4th star playing football in Utah? I played high school football in Utah and rarely was there a player that got national attention. The competition just doesn't compare to other states. Do recruiting sites take that into consideration?

Thank you

That opened my eyes. I guess I rarely pay attention to him or others during the games.

Craig James

Craig James seems to be an easy target. I guess I need a lesson on why I should make fun of/hate him.

Please give me weekly updates

I need weekly updates of my wallpaper based upon who we are playing. I was spoiled last year.

Sione Houma's opening game last night

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700172282/High-school-football-Rams-roll-past-the-Panthers.html

I read this in the local paper today. It looks like Sione Houma played rather well in his first game as a senior.

Best 'There are...' yet

This truly was some of your finest work. I look forward to 10:00 pm every night.

The Webber "timeout"

I was still relatively young when the Fab 5 played, but what I will always remember are the new swear words I learned after Chris Webber called "The Timeout", and watching my dad's hat fly 10 feet across the room hitting the TV in the dead center.

Make that at least 3 of us

Jimmer is a great baller. He always amazes me with his ability to go on huge scoring runs. Jimmer will play in the NBA, for at least 5 years.

I would love a 'W' tonight

I go to the University of Utah, and I am really tired of hearing about how good their basketball team was in the 90's and how that some how correlates to how good they are now. I really dislike me some Utes. It would be nice to talk some crap on my fellow classmates before our finals next week.
