Date Title Body
Class of 1984

My high school, Lansing Sexton, was ranked number 1 in the state for most of the year. They knocked off a loaded and eventual state champion Flint Northwestern team that had Glen Rice, Jeff Grayer (Iowa State, Milwaukee Bucks), Andre Rison and Anthony Pendleton (USC), during the regular season. They lost a regional final to a Jackson High team led by Iowa State star Gary Thompkins, a team they had beaten twice earlier in the season. Robert Henderson was  Mr. Basketball (the first one ever I believe) from Lansing Eastern Class of "82. 1984 was kind of the the end of an era (Magic Johnson, Jay and Sam Vincent), for the golden age of Lansing area hoops.

The UConn game

Thats what did for me. That was a truly awful football team that shoved us around for most of the game. Brady looked clueless and we were lucky to win.

Stolen helmet

I remember that. He had to wear a brand new one and had headaches all day. Stolen helmets, 3 am phone calls to players rooms, 3 am hotel fire alarms, no heat or hot water in the hotels the night before games, K-9 unit dogs sniffing the equipment. All examples of Buckeye "hospitality".

Lil Penny

I loved those commercials. The doll looked so much like him it was kind of creepy. Spike Lee was in them as well.

Bring em back

Please bring back the old road jerseys. The numbers look so much better without the maize trim around them. I'd like the helmet stickers back as well. Tyrone had a ton of them.

More To Come

I suspect this is just the beginning of the transfers. From what I've read, once winter workouts get in full swing, alot (or maybe just some) of the guys will not rise up, or want to rise up, to what is going to be expected of them. Jimmy doesn't fuck around.

Harmon of Michigan

I have never seen this (or known anyone who has), but Hollywood made this movie in the 1940's shortly after he won the Heisman. I think I've seen an old poster for it somewhere. Tom Harmon starred as himself.

Not Much

It used to show up quite often on the Late Late show movies back in the 70's and 80's. Kind of like Brian's Song. I once owned a VHS copy of it. If you are a big Lions fan, I highly recommend hunting it down somewhere.

Paper Lion

The classic scenes with Alex Karras, John Gordy, Lem Barney etc.., Alan Alda lining up to take the snap from the right guard, old lions uniforms. A great look at training camp in the 60's.

Gotcha

Thanks Startup, I missed that.

WTF

The season starts Saturday and the NCAA can't give UM an answer on Isaac, yet they have already made a determination on 2  MSU  basketball transfers whose season is two months away. Am I missing something here?  BTW- has Isaac been practicing? How has he looked? I have heard nothing about him.

Sweet

We missed that part at my High School.

M.A.M.A.

M.A.M.A. How you think you got that way? YO MAMA! YO MAMA!

Mike McGee

Mike McGee was a stud. People don't seem to remember how good this guy was. I believe he led the Big Ten in scoring twice, and his numbers would have been ridiculous had there been a 3-point line. He was in range just over the half court, and never met a shot he would not take. I think he also won a couple of rings as a sixth man for the Lakers with Magic. My favorite player as a kid. Also, had Phil Hubbard not blown out his knee, he might have been the best we've ever had here. Great memories.

Cobb, Greenberg, Gehringer, Kaline

Miggy has a lot of work yet to be the greatest Tiger of all time, but he rakes it harder than anyone in my lifetime. The ball just makes a different sound when he hits it. I was there today in a nearly empty stadium, and all four of his hits were absolute cannon shots, even the singles.

2000 by age 25?

I don't even have to look it up to call bullshit on that. 1000 maybe.

Pulp Fiction IS

one of the 10 best movies of all time. Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell WERE funny once. Springsteen and Dylan can't sing and haven't been relevant in 30 years. U2 sucks (other than the WAR album). NO one ever rocked harder than Spinal Tap!

Sorry but

Michigan never lost to Lou Holtz while he was at Minnesota. They lost to them in 1986. Lou was at ND by then.
