It would be a disaster if UM tried to go after the Freep.
1) Whether you believe they blew it out of proportions or not, the basis of the story was correct.
2) You'd have to somehow prove that not only was their information wrong, but that they knew it was wrong and STILL wanted to go ahead with the story. You really think that happened?
3) It would look like sour grapes.
I'd love it if he'd sit down and talk about it. He's been asked about it in pressers and he's given short two-sentence responses like Rich Rod when asked about Dorsey. I wish he'd spill his guts and say everything he can on the subject. I think what happened at Rather Hall is a an indictment of the second-chance he gave Winston, and the "everyone-deserves-a-second-chance" mantra that seems entrenched in college sports. I said then, and say now, that he screwed up there.
By "taken plenty of heat," I mean he's taken a (deserved) beating in the press.
Finally, I don't think he's hate filled. He does hate UM, no question. But he's pretty luke warm on everyone else he plays. He's actually a pretty mellow guy for the most part.
Gotta jump in here. While I'm as glad as anyone that Jenrette is off MSU's team, the situation is not exactly as you describe. You say that Jenrette's criminal history was known by MSU when he was recruited. How do you know this? Certainly you can believe it, but what evidence do you have that proves it?
What we know is that in 2008--when Jenrette was arrested for the second time--Dantonio sent him home to deal with "personal issues," and he was suspended for the entire season. We don't know when Dantonio learned about his history, but it's certainly possibly that it wasn't until then.
After a year away from the team, he was allowed back. Could you have made the argument at that time that it was a mistake? Certainly. It would have been entirely legitimate to question this move. And it would have been equally legitimate to argue that the kid had paid the price, and had earned a second chance.
After the fight, it's easy to conclude Dantonio screwed up here. And I know it's pretty popular here to portray MSU fans as a bunch lawless thugs who care only about winning (just as MSU fans like to portray UM in the same way), but it's off base. I'm as troubled about the incident at Rather Hall, and how it was handled, as you probably are. I think anyone who threw a punch that night should be off the team, or at the very least, suspended for a good portion of the season.
Mark Dantonio's taken plenty of heat for what happened the night of the football banquet, as he should, but I think it's inaccurate to claim a pro-MSU bias. Rich Rod just has a knack for fueling the fire.
