Great thread! Among the…

Great thread! Among the books I've read recently, three stand out as outstanding and wholly singular (in my admittedly limited experience, anyway):

Let's Kill Uncle by Rohan O'Grady

The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

The Night of the Hunter by Davis Grubb

I don't know, Novak once…

I don't know, Novak once fouled out of a game on 5 failed attempts to draw a charge call.

Does anyone know whether…

Does anyone know whether this debt and possible bankruptcy might have any negative impact on Sinclair, which owns Diamond Sports? Somehow I doubt it, but one can hope...

Dawson Garcia's bio on the…

Dawson Garcia's bio on the Yahoo! app is what has me most worried.

One of the worst things…

One of the worst things about policy surrounding modern education is that all too often it is boiled down to a monetary ROI analysis. Any university that wants to have its stated goals about quality education and the development of young people taken seriously cannot make decisions based solely on what its programs do for the bottom line. The college experience, which certainly includes athletics, is so much more than being trained to get a job; otherwise, college degrees would just be (mostly white-collar) apprenticeships. I'm sorry you view things through such a narrow lens. Should we disband the solar car team because it doesn't have a positive return?

Rotolu Adebiyi was a couple…

Rotolu Adebiyi was a couple years behind me at Huron High School before walking on at UM.

Always loved Lester Abram's game, but injuries really hampered him.

Also Olivier Saint-Jean, who transferred to San Jose State and changed his name to Tariq Adbul-Wahad before playing in the NBA for a while.

It's a good thing money didn…

It's a good thing money didn't motivate Lane to leave FAU for Ole Miss (or Tennessee for USC). Otherwise this would reek of hypocrisy.

Jackass.

I disagree, but for the sake…

I disagree, but for the sake of argument—in the play discussed where Walker dropped the ball, neither team "made the play." If he had clearly dropped it before he got to the end zone and it went out the back, you would want the ball awarded to the Michigan defense (that just got torched) by rule just because the Walker dropped the ball and it happened to roll out past the end line rather than the sideline? That doesn't make sense to me.

The endzone isn't the…

The endzone isn't the sideline because the sideline is out of bounds and the endzone isn't. Out of bounds is out of bounds, regardless of what boundary the ball crosses. I agree that fumbling out of bounds provides (or should provide) no advantage, so you get the ball back where you fumbled (i.e., no advantage). You can't reward the defense for not recovering a fumble.

The offense retain…

The offense should retain possession on a fumble unless the defense recovers it (for an actual change of possession). If the offense fumbles and the ball goes out over a sideline the defense doesn't get the ball. Why would the end zone be different?

Holy Hell, that Nebraska…

Holy Hell, that Nebraska mascot is terrifying.

I'll probably go for a…

I'll probably go for a hybrid 3 and maybe 4 as well. I like the feeling when I hit my 3-iron solid, but frankly it doesn't happen that often and I could use the extra forgiveness.

Yeah, Leslie is often slow…

Yeah, Leslie is often slow and I think it's due to a lot of time spent looking for lost balls. Errant drives can really put you in trouble after the first few holes (he said from experience).

I've rarely played outside…

I've rarely played outside the Ann Arbor area, but my favorite local course is Eagle Crest. It's a beautiful course that is neither easy nor very difficult and it has a good variety. Leslie Park is a great municipal course.

I'm actually going in to get fitted for irons for the first time in a couple weeks and am looking forward to it. I've only played with hand-me-downs from my dad my entire adult life. I was looking into possibilities recently and discovered that most sets—at least those for high-handicapper like myself—don't come with 3-irons anymore so I've got some decisions to make.

I encourage you all to…

I encourage you all to follow my lead and donate $50.00 to honor the score by which Michigan would have beaten Ohio State had the game been played.

The RFD Boys are still…

The RFD Boys are still playing, though not much these days as you can imagine. Sadly, Dick passed some years back, which was a great loss, but we go on with his blessing with some new blood (which includes myself).

We actually released an album last year, which you can find in the usual places. I wish I had been around the for glory days of the Pretzel Bell, but it was before my time.

Cronk's new groove?

Cronk's new groove?

It's been bad at least since Lucas started messing around with the originals in the 90s, got worse when Episode I came out, and has continued downhill. Too many people look forward to being angry and disappointed with each installment. Like people who still have season tickets to the Lions.

New bluegrass from Ann Arbor…

New bluegrass from Ann Arbor’s own RFD Boys - Still Delivering: The RFD Boys at 50 (full disclosure: I’m in the band)

Anyway, answers that aren’t shameless plugs:

Pokey LaFarge - Riverboat Soul

The Milk Carton Kids - Monterey

Ry Cooder - Into the Purple Valley

Ah, so those paying attention new about it already. Very well; I'm not prize worthy after all, but I'm still drinking the whiskey.

I feel like I should win a prize for being the first one to point that out. I am therefore awarding myself a shot of James Oliver Rye.

Wait, is that Carl…

Wait, is that Carl Grapentine doing the intro over the theme music?

I, for one, am never…

I, for one, am never invested in Notre Dame being good.

I don't even see the option…

I don't even see the option to up or down-vote, and haven't since the site update. Did the voting threshold get raised?

I do feel for the opposing

I do feel for the opposing players to some extent, but a bunch of private schools complaining about financial inequity in athletics is, if you'll excuse the pun, awfully rich. Especially in Baltimore.

Short time

1. He only left 5 years ago

2. He was only here for 2 years

3. He didn't win the national title (I know, I know)

Yes, he brought the first legit banners in ages, but I think if you're retiring a jersey for a guy who only stayed 2 years that guy should have brought you multiple conference titles or final fours or a national title or been an all-American both years. Splitting hairs, I admit, but those ar my criteria. Also, schools generally wait a while before retiring numbers.

More of his words on the gay community: https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/02/21/anti-gay-evangelical-preacher-bil…

“Let me say this loud and clear, we traffic in homosexuality at the peril of our spiritual welfare.”

I'm sure he also helped a lot of people, but he did so while denigrating countless others in broad, bigoted strokes.

Interesting

BTN2Go is decent for me in Ann Arbor, but FoxSportsGo is a disaster. It doesn't buffer so much as it jumps forward and backward constantly. I end up re-watching parts of a game and then it jumps live and I've missed something. By far the worst streaming app I've ever used. I wonder why there's such a difference in performance.

This is disappointing for 2 reasons

1. I'm not a big fan of megacorporations

2. I was hoping that this deal might mean getting BTN's and FOX's streaming apps up to the level of WatchESPN, but it doesn't sound likely.

In conclusion, boo.

I thought maybe he would be

I thought maybe he would be less forcefully on brand since it wasn't a traditional media appearance. I was wrong.

I don't think he's necessarily a bad guy (the NCAA is worse than he is, at least), but the image of piety he projects doesn't sit well with me.

Tom Slade

I went to Tom Slade's funeral and saw Bo there. Next day he was gone, too, and Michigan hasn't been the same since.

Yeesh

This is the 2012 game edition of this feature.

Side note: I really can't believe how consistently bad the State News columns are every year. It's like Bobby Williams is the their editor-in-chief.

Good Stuff

My biggest worry about Viper is WR screens. Peppers's ability to avoid blocks and time his surge into the backfield for a TFL was uncanny, and removing those plays from opponents' playbooks was huge.

Godwin's law

I don't think Godwin's law can apply when the topic at hand is Nazis already.

Forgot about that one

Odessa steps, man. What a film.

Tough call

Metropolis is incredible, but it's loooong. My favorite is probably City Lights. Honorable mentions to the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Mel Brooks' Silent Movie. The 2005 film The Call of Cthulhu was well done, too.

Powers

Ricky Powers was a really good back, but sadly my only specific memory of him is fumbling against Illinois in 1993.

Movie Sign With the Mads

I really enjoy Movie Sign With the Mads. It's Frank and Dr. Forrester from the old MST3K along with Carolina Hidalgo, and they pick a movie each week (they do both new and classic films) and talk about it.

Music

Nice to hear some Billy Strings and Don Julin on the podcast! Awesome Michigan bluegrass.

Yes and no

I agree that Baumgardner's writing style is...not the cleanest, but his analysis is pretty solid in my opinion.  His Monday columns after football games were full of good stuff about specific plays and players.  He does tend to spout cliches at times, but he backs them up with actual numbers and analysis.  Brian mentioned in a column once that he does way more than the average local beat writer and I agree.  He and Quinn are great together on the podcast, too.

I've got you covered. I live

I've got you covered. I live in Ypsi and have a mic, stand, and powered mixer you can use. Do you need anything other than just me showing up at like 3:30?

Question

I always put two spaces after a period and am a fanatical supporter of the Oxford Comma. How do these affect my chances?

Oh yeah!

Gargamel is PISSED tonight.

There it is

Let's hope the Fords go with the obvious move here - Art Shell.
