Hoke was top notch at this aspect of his job.

|3 hours 29 min ago||academic fraud by athletes is a violation in itself||
regardless of whether other students benefitted or not. This is not an extra benefit violation. The mere fact that a school has a problem that touches on athletics but also goes beyond athletics is hardly a reason for the entity supervising collegiate athletics to wash its hands of the issue.

so if they were willing to make the donations to pay for them, I'm not going to complain.
Season ticket prices and PSDs go to fund the operating budget from which scholarships and coach salaries are paid.
Facility donations go to fund the capital budget from which things like building projects are funded.
These new facilities did nothing to drive up season ticket costs.

there was almost no drop from the field to the first row of stands. The field was lowered almost 10 feet in 1991. Field rushes were a lot more common prior to 1991 because it was so much easier and safer to get from the stands onto the field.

for the next 11 years. Sure someone could come along with a new proposal, but it would take the agreement of a lot of conferences, schools, and bowls, any one of whom could see a strong incentive to hold out.

Played in the Pac12 title game a couple years back at 6-6 because USC was ineligible, but got beaten like a drum by Oregon.
UCLA did make it to the Rose Bowl in 1982 with a 6-4-1 record - and beat the living daylights out of a 10-1 Illinois team.

Go into the operating budget.
Funding for this stuff comes from the capital budget.
The two never meet except when an operating surplus is put into the capital budget for future projects.

by donor contributions through the Victors for Michigan campaign.
First and foremost there was the substantial donation Stephen Ross made last fall, which is why the entire Athletic Campus is known as the Stephen M. Ross Athletic Campus. Ross gave $200 million to UM in 2013, half of which went to the Athletic Department.
This was all approved by the Regents last spring.
I do believe that some of it is being funded as you suggest.

It was pushing 80 on April 1 that year.
Very memorable day - 10,000 people at the Hash Bash (many advance Deadheads showed up as the Dead were playing Crisler later in the week), really warm weather...and oh yeah, the basketball team won some semifinal game in Seattle.

Bill Martin decided that when you're spending $250 million of other people's money, that you probably need to secure what it is that you're spending the money on. Though they do forget to lock it up sometimes. I know of folks who have just walked up at odd times during the offseason and found it open, and walked in.

|9 weeks 2 days ago||That rule||
has been rescinded. The B10 intra-conference transfer rule is now the same as the NCAA trannsfer rule, except that it essentially mandates sitting out a year even if there's an NCAA waiver, such as the rule permitting graduated students to transfer and play immediately. The B10 rule allows the original school to block it if it chooses.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||Just FYI||
The surplus they're reporting is the now-audited total for 2013-2014.
Brandon's forecasted surplus of $5 million is for academic year 2014-2015 that will conclude in this summer. They haven't reported even an unaudited number or updated estimate for that yet.
The budgeted profit for 2013-2014 was about $9 million. If you look at past budgets and compare them with the actual numbers it is not unusual for the total profit number to come in better than forecast.

Best Hash Bash ever.
It was an unseasonably warm 80 degrees.
The Dead were coming to Crisler midweek so a bunch of Deadheads had already descended upon Ann Arbor.
And, of course, the basketball team was about to play Illinois in the Final Four.

Also in the 1994 Illinois game, we broke open a close one with a long punt return on which there was an obvious (and key) block in the back.

Ushers are supposed to hold fans at the entrance to the section until play stops. Been that way in every NHL rink I've been to.
It's more of a hassle in places like Detroit, which must have the worst Jumbotron screens of any pro arena in any sport.
|15 weeks 1 day ago||Until the kids are seniors||
coaches aren't allowed to call them. They get around this by calling the kid's HS coach and saying, "hey, have pllayer X call us. We're interested."
College coaches also need access to the high school to do whatever academic evaluations the coach is going to do.
If your name is mud with the HS coach, the obvious way to get around the rule against calling the kid directly is shut down. The HS coach can either be very helpful to college coaches, or very unhelpful.

|16 weeks 3 hours ago||Innocent until proven guilty||
applies only to what the jury at the criminal trial is supposed to be told. The defendant is presumed innocent and the burden is on the state to prove otherwise.
Innocent until proven guilty isn't the rule outside that context. When it comes to expulsion/suspension/etc. if you're at a state college, you're entitled to due process, which may or may not mean you're only suspended pending trial. If you're at a private school like Stanford, you are entitled to nothing more than whatever rights they give when you sign an "I agree to be bound by the code of student conduct" paperwork.
