I look at it as a great sign…

I look at it as a great sign that  the son NBA player, Scottie Pippen, chose to be coached by Dusty May. I remember when John Beilein had several sons of NBA players play  for him. There was Tim Hardaway, Glen Robinson, and I believe a couple others whose names escape me. It is likely that the NBA fathers with their basketball connections  have a good sense for the inside word on what are likely to be well coached programs and share that with their sons.

That fine establishment…

That fine establishment better have available many kegs of the cheapest beer imaginable.

Maybe I am being pedantic…

Maybe I am being pedantic but I don't like the title of this article: "Litigation Dropped; Michigan Suspends Harbaugh".  Technically, the BIG10 punished the University of Michigan and the form of its punishment was to ban Harbaugh from being on the sidelines for 3 games. If I recall, the BIG10 in its letter admitted it didn't have evidence of wrongdoing by Harbaugh and its punishment of banning him from the sidelines was a punishment of the University, not him. The title makes it seem that the University is suspending Harbaugh which isn't the case. The University is simply not fighting the punishment the BIG10 (unfairly) administered against the University.

This matters to me because I want the University to announce a huge contract extension for Harbaugh at the start of next week. That wouldn't be happening if the University was suspending Harbaugh.

WTF!  It would be better to…

WTF!  It would be better to fight and lose in court than to just roll over. Even if you lose in court, it shows that you believed in your case, and that for whatever technical legal  reason, it didn't go your way. People understand that. But just rolling over? Makes it seems like you agree with the punishment. I wonder how much the University paid this top law firm? Either the University received some bad advice, or something new has come out.

I will be shocked if Coach…

I will be shocked if Coach Harbaugh testifies tomorrow. I know he would love to testify and clarify the rightness of his case. However, tomorrow's hearing as I understand it will be limited to technical legal issues about whether the Big Ten breached its contact by failing to follow its own policies and processes and whether any breach is sufficient to cause irreparable harm such that the court should issue an injunctive order.  Any testimony by Coach Harbaugh would be far less important than documents, case law, and statutes that the judge will want to focus on. I do see some benefit to bringing him in to testify, but it would also open the doors to the BIG10's attorneys requesting a delay so they can bring in their key witnesses, with delay being the last thing we want.

Wolverine91, I also wonder…

Wolverine91, I also wonder where exactly we are in the process with the BIG Ten now. This is all speculation (which is what 99%+ of us are doing at this point) but I believe that  U of M received the BIG10  Notice of Violation on either Friday of last week or Monday of this week. It only gave U of M two business days to respond, which means that U of M must file a response by either today or tomorrow. The response certainly will include that the NCAA apparently said that it had no evidence of Coach Harbaugh's involvement as well as certainly many other good arguments. The ball will then be in the Big Ten's court. It can either lay the hammer on Michigan and ban Harbaugh for a season (certainly resulting in a lawsuit seeking injunction) or it can say that it will do nothing, pending the NCAA investigation, or anything in between. Now would be a good time for U of M to leak a little bit more, showing how ugly this will be if the BIG10 chooses the wrong path. The Big10 should back down, but I have no idea if this new commissioner is wise enough to do so or is getting advice from the right people. The Michigan side needs to have the mindset that it will be fully ready to go to war if the Big10 chooses the wrong path.

Funny and true points made…

Funny and true points made by all here. But I am wondering if we should lower the temperature here and not “pile on.” Certainly, if the tables were reversed and we were in a bad situation, they would not let up. And I believe the toxicity in the relationship largely is caused by them. Even so, magnanimity (as Abraham Lincoln showed in an exponentially more serious context) may be the better course.

As much as I need to hold…

As much as I need to hold back the vomit in saying this, I hope Ohio beats Notre Dame. From a "what is best for Michigan perspective," if Michigan and Ohio State are both undefeated when they face each other, and Michigan loses, Michigan has a better chance of making it into the four team playoff, just as happened with OSU year.

Moderate at best NBA fan…

Moderate at best NBA fan here. However, whenever I have time to watch a game, I find myself seeking out the Heat. I  appreciate their culture and I love the Duncan Robinson underdog story. Of course I don’t know him personally but he seems like a decent guy and I love the fact that he obtained generational wealth with his five year NBA contract.

A few weeks ago I was traveling and ran into a huge Tennessee fan. He explained that he signed up for an automatic $20 monthly contribution to his school's NIL fund. Don't know any details and not sure if this was school sponsored or private. But I walked away feeling that the Big Ten was way behind what the SEC and other schools were doing with NIL funds.

I graduated from the…

I graduated from the University of Michigan in 1986. About three years ago, I received an email from Mark Schlissel asking me to report any sexual misconduct I ever encountered at the University. I’m sure this was a mass email to all the students during a certain extended timeframe. I had been to the University health system on occasion. Fortunately, I never encountered or was aware of anything. I wrote a long email response explaining that I was proud of the University for taking this problem head-on and hopefully setting a good example for other institutions on how to handle these types of things in the future. I received I boilerplate one sentence response from an administrative person thanking me for my response. I suppose it was unrealistic to think he had time to respond to these types of emails, particularly because I am just an average fan. Strange times.

Agree that Wagner’s impact…

Agree that Wagner’s impact on the team last year was underrated. Also, Michigan lost three other guys to the who are on the NBA bubble, Livers, Smith, and Brown. That is a heck a lot of talent to lose. In retrospect, it was overly optimistic to expect  an overall excellent recruiting class to replace that talent right away.

One way to look at it: last…

One way to look at it: last year, we lost four players to the NBA. Franz Wagner, a top 10 pic, who is exceeding expectations, Smith, Brown, and Livers, who I believe are all (hopefully) in the G league. That is a heck of a lot of talent to replace. Between guys on the bench and the fantastic recruiting class, I really like what we have. However, it is going to take some real coaching to get them operating smoothly. Coach Howard and staff are the right guys  to do it. It is going to take some time. In retrospect, the team was over ranked going into the year. I believe there’s a very good chance that they will be a strong team at the end of the year.

Question for tech savvy…

Question for tech savvy people:  I live in Chicagoland and have Wow cable service. Last week during Northwestern game, the feed cut out at halftime (just after Northwestern scored a touchdown at the end of the half, leaving serious doubt about how second half would play out). All other channels worked, but not Fox. Could this 4K be the issue? Does my cable box somehow not process 4K very well? I am extremely worried about a similar disruption tomorrow. About to call the help desk but who knows how helpful that will be. Thank you.

Went back and watched it…

Went back and watched it. You can clearly see his legs churning when Haskins stripped the ball.

Excellent writing by both…

Excellent writing by both authors! Internet Raj, I showed your work to my high school junior son, who is interested in fiction writing. He couldn’t stop laughing. Of course, most Sparties couldn’t write that well. However, that’s part of the inside joke.

So, we are winning in the 4th quarter,

 when it counts ....

My Theory Why Hoke May Win When (please let it

happen) Brandon is Gone: The head football coach is supposed to be the alpha male, and those who follow will run through walls for him when he requests it. It is built into the DNA of pack animals, such as  humans.  When Brandon sits in on football meetings (where he doesn't belong), it messes up Brady Hoke's status as the alpha male, and on some deep unconscious level, the players are confused and can't draw upon the level of all out commitment that would normally be present.

And yes, thank you,  I received a B+ in Psychology 101 and and an A- in Anthropology at U of M.

Here is my Michigan angle on this.

Martin played for Harbaugh, a tough dictator type coach in the  Schembechler mold who wouldn't tolerate Incognito type behavior on the team.  Martin thrived at Stanford to the point where he became a second round NFL draft choice.  Jake Long, if I have my timeline down correctly, left the Dolphins just before Martin arrived, thereby leaving an animal like Incognito to assume a leadership position. I certainly don't know Jake Long but with my Michigan colored glasses, I believe that there is a good chance that the locker room tone would have been less harsh with his veteran presence.

The new scent

 is called "Odeur De Poulet."

Right, but if that $10 million per student is accurate, and if

the principle kicked off say 3% per year in interest, that is still $300,000 per year per student, without invading the principle.  I don't understand why Princeton would cost so much, given its endowment.

Great topic.  My children will be attending (hopefully) college within the next 5 - 10 years and the projected costs are daunting.  I will help them out to the extent I can but will not gut my retirement plan to do so.  They need to look carefully at the debt they will take on to pay for tuition, and what that will mean for their hopes of obtaining financial security in their lives.

My favorite: "This evening we have a possum moon."
Nice analysis, Ace. Any insight as to what the problem was

with rebounding  IU's  missed free throws in the second half? On at least three occcasions and possibly more,  IU missed the front end of a one and one but then recovered the rebound off the miss.  I understand the unexpected long bounce off the rim creates problems.  Still, it went in IU's favor so often that  I couldn't help think that IU was doing something srategic  to get those rebonds, or our guys were doing something wrong.

Good post and I think you are on to something.

I love clean basketball and coach Beilen clearly preaches this and his players practice it.  I also believe that there is room in clean basketball to send a message with a clean hard foul.  One of the Michigan State bigs (I am not sure who) sent Jordan Morgan to the ground with a hard foul when  Jordan Morgan was going for  a dunk.  Dakich said it wasn't a foul and the refs called a foul.  The message the Michigan State player sent was that Michigan State controls the paint and it seemed that Michigan backed down after that.

Michigan doesn't send the same  message that it controls the paint.  I don't know whether going for so many charges is good or bad.  I do know that the Michigan defense doesn't send a message that their opponents have any reason to fear going in the paint.

I know Brian and others have mentioned that from a statistical analysis, running your offense through big players in the paint is less efficient than effective outside shooting.  However, on a more primal level, the team that is is able to be aggressive in the paint sets an overall tone that spills over to all other areas of the game.

You Tube: Hitler Reacts to Notre Dame loss to Michigan

Don't know how to embed a video.  Someone please embed the youtube video  with this title.   The humor may bring tears to your eyes.

Why read literature?

Because it helps us make sense out of our world.  The connection Brian makes between focusing on doing one's job (pulling  the refridgerator) as opposed to focusing on people knowing that you are dong a great job is pure gold.

A few years ago, the police killed a couger here in Chicago.

The  Chicago Tribune reported that a DNA analysis revealed that the couger originated from Montana or some other western state.  It is amazing the creature roamed so far.  Sad that the couger died, but no tranquilizers were availbable at the time and police believed that human lives were in jeopardy.

Cougers are in the UP and northern lower peninsua as well, but one in  Ann Arbor seems far fetched, but not impossible.

Matt D, Excellent work. I was wondering

whether a  statistical analysis of this year's defense compared to last year  was possible and you did it.  I am not sure why some of  the comments are so harsh against you.  With my maize and blue colored glasses, I see that this year's defense is better and that it will get much better throughout the year.  The truth is that none of us will know for certain how good the defense is into we get well into the big ten season.  I am excited by 4 and 0 and likely 5and 0 record next week. However, I need to remind my self that this is about how the last two seasons started as well.  Your analysis provides a good cautionary note.

Jalen Rose's charitable support of education certainly is

worthy.  My point is that  I wish he would have softened the harmful  "Uncle Tom" talk in his documentary.  Again, he doesn't believe that now, but I would have liked that to be clearer in the film.  It leaves open the possiblity for some to misinterpret him as still believing that way.

Get Off Of My Lawn!

I feel like the Clint Eastwood Character in Gran Torino in saying what I am about to say.

I agree with Grant Hill on this one, although his tone was too preachy. Rose in his documentary should have repudiated his prior "Uncle Tom" statement. I  get the point that this is what he used to believe, but he doesn't say what he believes now. I have heard that in recent media appearances, he explains his opinion, but he should have done so in the documentary.

We couldn't keep our eyes off of  the fab five because (1) they were awesomely talented and (2) there was a fish out of water sense about them - inner city kids who embraced hip hop culture in an elite university setting.

The hip/hop notion that one can act "too white" by studying hard and embracing middle class values is harmful to the vast majority of under privileged inner city kids.  Jalen Rose should have clearly rejected it in the documentary.  Jalen Rose came from that environment and is a success but very few are blessed with the athleticism to  be able to follow him.  Grant Hill is a better role model   because his focus on educational values will help many more.

One final point: while I loved following the fab five at the time, a little part of me feels guilty because they in no way represented the better values of our University.  Some one else made the point that they could have gone to any university and created the same sensation.  By mere chance they chose ours, yet they had no real connection to what it stands for.  Those who attack Grant Hill merely because he criticises our fab five seem to have adobted the SEC and OSU views that "we don't care if cheating occured, as long as it is not too obvious and we win."  As Michigan fans, we are better than that. Our University stands for excellence.  Our teams are disciplned, tough,  hard nosed, and they play by the rules.  Chris Webber by taking money didn't play by the rules, and the wins are tainted.

Please stop picking on the guy.

Ezeh gives more of his heart and soul to Michigan than you and I ever did or will.

This is more than a little disturbing.

Here are some random thoughts:

1.  There will need to be less hitting in practice.  There seems to be a cumulative effect of many "minor" hits to the head.

2.  There will need to be a lot more education  of coaches about recognizing the signs of concussion and keeping kids out of the game/practice when there is suspicion that a player has sustained one.

3.  I have heard it said that in 20 years, when researchers know more about the long term effect of concussions, a lot of middle class families won't let their children play football.  However, the game is so big that it will always exist.

4. I will continue to watch this issue.  I have to admit that my conscience is slightly troubled by the thought that my love and passion for Michigan football is associated with a game where some of the kids may be sustaining long term brain damage.

These stats are amazing, but did you sense how Denard

put the team on  his shoulders on the final drive?  The several prior drives looked sluggish.  When it mattered most, you could feel Denard running with more authority, willing the team to win.  What comes to mind is watching Michael Jordan, and the way you knew that he was not going to let his team lose.

Espn reports that Coach Rodriguez called the last

play that Robinson ran as  a running play that centered the ball for the field goal, in case Robinson didn't make it.

Looked the painting up on Wikipedia. It is by Leonardo Da Vinci

Jesus just announced that he will  soon  be betrayed.  The apostle whom Brady is hugging is James.  I wonder if James is more stunned by Jesus' announcement or the fact that Tom Brady is hugging him?

I also wonder if James is worried that the other apostles will think that he is the one who will betray Jesus, given that this wierd quarterback/time warp thing is happening to him?

Rufus' Poor Upper Body Strength

Despite poor technique, Rufus probably makes the first tackle if his arms were stronger.  An offseason under Barwis and Rufus not only makes the tackle at the 20 but the collateral damage also  takes out the FD.

I do recall a Michigan guy tackling Brutus on the field

in Ann Arbor about this time.  He was on the field and not in uniform so I assumed he was a recruit.  He dove at Brutus' legs and took him down, which ripped off the Ohio State flag.  Brutus got up and threatened him with the flag staff.   It was crazy and hilarious.   Michigan 28, Ohio State 0.  (1983)

Rash, I call dibs on this photo for my avatar,

unless you want it.

I wish I could have felt that way but I honestly did not. Even

when we did score on our final drive, I still wasn't comfortable until Crist's final pass went into the Tuba section.

The recent Doctor Saturday article that was board linked here

made a good point that  the media will overreact to the results of today's game, but no one will really know  how good Michigan and Notre Dame are  until later in the season. While I would like to believe Michigan is great this year, I really don't know.  We won't know until we run through the gauntlet of Michigan State, Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin and Ohio State. I frankly don't care if the media  says that we are awesome or unimpressive.  Lets just enjoy the journey.

Crist going out for most of 1st half was also a lucky break.

Not sure if we win if he would have stayed in.  Glad the guy was not hurt.  If he had a head injury, should he have even gone back in?  Another break was the recovery of our own fumble.

The guy keeps scratching the fleas on his left shoulder.

I am not sure who I like better, this guy or the red neck rocker.

Denard can throw over the top of the defense.

It sounds like Kelly doesn't expect him to do so, but because he doesn't know for sure, he can't bring the safeties too close to the line.  And by not doing so, he leaves space for Denard Robinson's shorter passes (and runs).  This is the beauty of Michigan's offensive system.

Brian Griese.

Tate's Dad should remind Tate of what went on with one of my favorite Michigan players.  Brian Griese was in  Coach Carr's dog house one year and leading Michgan to a national championship the next.   You never know what will happen, and you will never get a chance to find out unless you stick around.

Also, lets take it easy on the kid.  I know how immature I was at 19 to 20 years old and I would hate to see my missteps under a microscope like this.  I am sure that  the ones who love and care about him will have the hard discussions with him about the error of his ways.

I like Matt Millen as a commentater.

When the U Conn's punter shanked it, Millen said "That was pathetic!"  He stated early that Michigan would do well because the offensive line was dominating.   Stay in the booth Mr. Millen and please don't manage another football team.

Agreed. We should have called a time out. Also give credit

to U Conn's coach for the  quick snap fourth down play.

Gibbons missed extra point looked to me like a botched hold.

Lord, I hope so, and that there are no problems with the field goal kickers.

Presently, I don't see anything to dislike about Nebraska

and therefore I have a hard time seeing this as an intense rivalry game.  With Michigan State, the fans' inferiority complex  compels them to make fools of themselves, win or lose.  The Notre Dame fans are self righteous  whiners.    The Ohio State fans are thuggish hicks.  Nebraska fans in general seem classy so I will have a hard time hating them.

Wait. I thought the red neck rocker

held the position of  Ohio State's Athletic Director.
