iverson! The billups for ai trade sunk the franchise and made the nuggets winners for years. I don't think any other move dumars made is even in the conversation.
:(

That is sad to watch. The end of the first drive just about sums up his career.

This was the first episode i took personally

Why can't he let us have anything nice?

No, they're not

I think this is the key.  Profits are irrelevant because the people running athletic departments don't have a profit incentive. They have an incentive to earn as much revenue as possible and then spend it on salaries. In the long run, athletic departments won't earn a profit. That doesn't mean they don't earn revenue that could be spent on athletes instead of coach bonuses and jumbotrons.

Forgive me

Belein is using eronautics to lift his team to new heights

Its the start

of a new eron

What they said.

For economics, Most of the evidence shows that hosting the olympics costs more than it benefits the country. I don't think it's the people pushing these events that pay that cost and i would think it's similar for the world cup.  http://qed.econ.queensu.ca/working_papers/papers/qed_wp_1097.pdf

But there is also the human cost. I could find many more examples, but here a couple:

Tclose to 1,000 people, mostly migrants from india who are promised high pay and then get cheated,  have already died building the stadiums in Qatar.

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/over-900-workers-have-already-died-building-qatars-world-cup-facilities-180950088/?no-ist

And I was in Vancouver (our neighbor! just like us) when they hosted the olympics and you weren't allowed to criticize the olympics outside designated "free speech zones". this was repeated in  Sochi where people were allowed to voice negative opinions about the olympics while their rights were suspended everywhere else.

I know I'm lumping the olympics and world cup together, but it's pretty clear from the protests in brazil that the citizens there are not being heard.

Sitting out the world cup

I love sport in all forms but I just can't do the world cup. I obsess over college football even though it seems like the athletes aren't getting their fair cut, but these huge events like the world cup and olympics where some of the poorest people in the world end up paying so that the richest people in the world can party and make money for a few weeks, it's just a little too sick for me.

We can't pass on Stauskas

No regrets. That's a win.

Hate you cancer

My mom spent two of the last three weeks in Mott after getting her second chemo treatment. Scheduled for a bone marrow transplant and another month in the joint come February. It's a b***. Fuck you cancer!!!!!!

This makes me sad

hockey isn't the same without Teddy.

I made pizza for journey.

Journey! They ate my pizza! NBD

This is interesting stuff and

This is interesting stuff and I have a couple follow up questions.

You say that getting kids from the plains is getting harder for Nebraska, but it simply follows that getting more kids from the midwest means getting fewer from the plains. so without looking at the change in the ratings of the midwestern and plains kids respectively after nebraska joined the B1G. that would tell you if they are having a tougher time signing plains kids or simply replacing them with higher quality midwestern recruits.

Also, I think future years will actually be better for nebraska in midwest recruiting. high school players right now don't see nebraska as a traditional B1G opponent. but guys in middle school and younger will think of nebraska as part of the neighborhood and naturally be more interested.

Boo. How do I neg you?

Brand Identity

I think the value of these contracts for the apparel companies isn't just being associated with a university sport. if adidas isn't the exclusive provider for all michigan sports, they lose the cache that comes with that. why would a company pay to supply basketball uniforms just to be entitled to play second fiddle to another company supplying football uniforms?

Highlights?

Anyone know where to find highlights of michigan's games so far? it looks like CBssports only has interviews with belein and ESPN must have an agreement that only allows them to show a few seconds of footage.

Wherefore art thou turtle neck?

Just saw Tommy Amaker's halftime interview and it bothers me to say I immediately noticed he was sans turtle neck. Did harvard make him give it up? is he a changed man?

ESPN Highlight Reel

What helped me take my mind off the game a little was watching the espn highlight reel from the game recap and hearing over and over how the badgers beat michigan three times this year, then bruce pearl announcing that wisconsin has beat  michigan "twelve out of the last three games". it was funny and reminded me that we are not the only ones who sucked today.

Who?

True Blue Grit, you got any names? Graham Brown is the only engineer b-ball or football athlete i can think of off the top of my head. Paper topic: it would be interesting to see someone run down incoming recruits who said they wanted to be pre-med, pre-law, engineering, or B-school, and then actually went that route successfully.

I love your avatar! please post all the time.

Nice use of the word

Penn State

Call it the appy state effect, but I'm awfully leery about tomorrow in Happy Valley. We didn't win on the road in February and Penn State's been hanging tight their last three games. they are bound to break through at some point.

The Second half of the article

is more informative than the first half. I think comparing the ratings of the various commits can tell us something about future success, but I can't really figure out the utility of labeling everyone a 1,2,or3 in terms of seeing how the team will do in the future. wouldn't any team have a similar rate of 1,2,or 3 players by virtue of the fact that they gotta play 22 guys? Trying to have a discussion more than be critical, i always look forward to your diaries Ron Utah.

You said it!

how do i up vote your comment?

Leave him alone

I think he was misquoted. He said he loves the state of ohio and it got reported as loving ohio state. But it really doesn't matter.  A teenager shouldn't have to feel bad for saying he loves something. Even if that thing is OSU. It's ludicrous reading this statement from a kid apologizing from the bottom of his heart because his love hurt our feelings.

Wow

Fantastic breakdown. Thanks. Kevin Grady, being the last top 25, solidly built running back that michigan signed is the name that keeps popping into my head when i read about Green. This makes me feel better.

Race card: Reasonable to play it?

I don't follow college basketball close enough to know how well anyone plays outside of games against michigan, so i can't weight in on how much any player deserves the NPOY award.

That being said, i'm looking at a list of past Naismith winners and four of the last eight: JJ Redick, Andrew Bogut, Jimmer, and Tyler Hansborough are white. On the list in the original post, 4 of the top 7 are white.

There is no way that reflects the fraction of ncaam basketball players who are white.

I took a philosophy and law class where one of the topics was that eye witness testimony is problematic because people have more difficulty recognizing faces of another race than their own. I wonder if there is an eyewitness testimony problem here. With the media primarily run by white guys, is it easier for them to identify and market successful white players? Is there some other explanation? Or are white players just overachievers?

Hey, i went to school with

Hey, i went to school with teddy from ms. merritt's class all the way through college. my memories of teddy from that year are all of him either wearing a throwback Bruins jersey or a yellow michigan hockey jersey. He definitely held it down for the East Lansing michigan fans.

Teddy was always my go to guy for michigan hockey info. his passing really hit me when Adam Janecyk got the shutout this weekend. i wanted to call teddy and ask him all about the guy who came from nowhere to get all those saves. but teddy wasn't going to be there to answer the call. that was a tough moment.

here is why I'm glad Brian wrote about teddy, and why i think it's important for this community to know about him. it's because he's a guy who devoted his life to michigan sports. I'm an avid sports fan, but underneath there is always a place I can look to and say, you know, it doesn't matter in the end. teddy didn't have that place.he made sports(michigan, red wings, tigers)  the focus and meaning of a life that he must have known would be short, and in doing so, he elevated them to something greater than they were before. if a caring, generous, perservering person can truly hold these teams in the foremost place in his heart, then you know what, they matter in a real way and it validates this blog and the people here more than any other tribute can.
