|3 years 15 weeks ago||I wouldn't screw around with||
I wouldn't screw around with shipping from the online retailers, if for no other reason it will take longer than a week to get to you (and cheaper to buy the same products in-store).
I do stuff like this with relative frequency. I would ask your Mom if there is a nice wine store nearby. Often they carry craft beers and often they put together wine baskets (with crackers/cheese/wine/etc) and they sometimes have beer baskets as well - if not, you can ask them to put something together for you if they're a cool shop.
If this isn't an option, go buy the stuff individually (it's often cheaper anyway). If you want to stick with Michigan (which, yes, you should) you and your Mom can find Bell's products pretty easily in GA (look here: http://bellsbeer.com/brands/brand-finder/ ). Go find a variety of beers and put 2 of each in a basket with cheese/crackers/what-have-you, then give him the rest of them after you've given him the basket.
I'm also pretty sure Founders is in GA as well, so if you can find Bell's, Founders is likely an option as well.
|3 years 16 weeks ago||Alright man, I'm going to||
Alright man, I'm going to take a stab at this. I'm assuming you have access to most of the awesome CA stuff (Alpine, Kern River, etc) on a regular basis, so don't worry about those. Also, not sure how much you get to festivals like this, but if you're really into trying a lot of different beers, don't be afraid to ask for less in your glass so you can try more before getting blasted. (also, eat a lot)
I'm a huge Bell's homer and do like Roundhouse quite a bit. I've only seen it at the pub in k'zoo, so if you can, get a bit of that. My sis also lives in Tampa, so I've had a fair amount of Cigar City - all their stuff is great, so be sure to get those. (my reco is if you're going with someone else, have them get the opposite beer you do, so you can try both without waiting in line again).
I also love Dogfish Head generally, but 61 and Noble Rot aren't my favs- they're both solid beers made with grape must, so if you're into wine, I'd suggest getting after those so you can see what they taste like.
We get some Mikeller here in Chicago, but I've not had either of these - they make great stuff though, so I'd wait in line for those.
The beers from Revolution in Chicago are awesome, I'd say try to get to those early to make sure you get some. They make a killer IPA (Anti-Hero) so between their expertise and FW's I have to imagine that collab will be spectacular.
Ditto the above posters thoughts on Surly - they mostly stay only in Minnesota, so now's your chance. Dreadnaught is a good beer from 3 Floyds, but not my favorite. If you have the time and your liver remains intact, go ahead and get some, but I wouldn't shove anyone out of the way for it. If they DO end up brining DL and Zombie Dust, go ahead and push down that old lady - she'll understand.
Have an awesome time! I'd love to see what you end up trying/liking.

I actually think this years Kings squad does the opposite of what the OP is arguing (though I see where he comes from). If the Kings hadn't evaluated their team halfway through the regular season and made two MAJOR changes (getting Carter and hiring Sutter) they would not have been close to making the playoffs.
I think this Stanley Cup Champion will argue their failures (and subsequent changes) makes this regular season mean more than it had in the past.

|4 years 22 weeks ago||The best advice coming from||
The best advice coming from current 2L is just make sure you want to go to law school. It's too much of a time/stress/monetary investment to not entirely buy-in.
You'll also want to take into consideration where your family is. I assume since you're at Western, that you live in/around the Kalamazoo area? If true, are you going to relocate the fam during school or commute? If you already live in the detroit area, then staying in the area and going to Wayne may be your best bet that way you won't have to reacclimate everyone to a new area. Chicago will be tough just because the legal culture sucks here right now and is over-saturated with lawyers and law students, but there are opportunites there for the right people.
At the end of the day, you need to make the decision for yourself though. Folks on here have been through the trenches, but no one can get inside your head. Wherever you go and whatever you decide to do, just make sure you've done your own work and don't rush your decision.
Best of luck!

If we (Wings) had home ice, I'd be a lot less concerned, but Nashville has been insane at home this year and we have not been so great on the road. That being said its the playoffs and Helm will be back, so hopefully, that will give us a jump.
My biggest areas of concern are two-fold: scoring early, and powerplay. If we can get those clicking, I think we can win this series pretty handily.

As much as a despise him, Contador made a great move attempting to lose Evans and the Schlecks. HOWEVA the camera crew made an error by not showing them chase him down and catching right at the line which I loved. I have to imagine, those guys took some risks on the descent.
Too bad Voeckler ran off the road on the descent, that certainly contributed to him losing time.
|5 years 10 weeks ago||I love seeing Voeckler in||
I love seeing Voeckler in yellow, he comes off as such a humble guy. I still think Andy and Leopard/Trek still have some cards up their sleeve and I agree with Liggett and Sherwen that he made a statement that he wasn't done at the end of stage 14 by pulling away from Contador and the rest to get a few seconds.
I think it'll come down to Evans and Shleck in the Alps barring any craziness and Voeckler is going to lose a good bit of time in the TT. It's going to be hard for Contador to make back his 4 minutes while holding off the Schlecks and Evans. Karma? I think so.
I, for one, have really enjoyed the tour so far this year with seeing Voeckler staying with the big boys and Hushovd showing what its like to be a veteran cyclist. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this pans out after the rest day tomorrow.

Lots of guys like 21st Amendment, Brewery Vivant, Sierra Nevada are getting on board (I think over 80 craft breweries are using cans).
If I'm going to someone's house or buying for myself, I'll stick with 12oz bottles, but if I go somewhere where I'm worrying about breaking the bottles or putting them in a backpack, then I'll go the can route.

Thats what makes craft beer so awesome. Two people can taste the same two beers and have completely different views on it. I was actually able to get my hands on a bottle of the stout at the pub in wrigleyville. If you feel like splurging, get yourself a bottle, it's well worth it.
I'm sure it will age well in the bottle too if you get yourself a 4-pack then keep a couple in the celler for awhile.

IIRC you can get bottles of the 120 at Ashley's but I'm not 100% on that. I love their "minute" series, but I think I like the Dogfish Head Burton Baton better than those. Its on a similar vein, but I think has a more complex malt profile than the 90 or 120 minute. I like it better.

Thanks for the tip on the Kirkland stuff, thats fantastic. I was nervous about buying something that was so inexpensive.
I don't love the brews from Goose Island. 312 is pretty ok, but I really only like it in the summer. They have one in the Chicago area called Green Line which, IMO, is the best they put out (aside from the Burbon Aged Country Stout at $10/bottle).

|6 years 4 weeks ago||One thing that has not yet||
One thing that has not yet been mentioned is that Jolly Pumpkin also carries beer from North Peak Brewing up in Traverse City on draft. They make a killer Amber Ale called Siren, that is very nicely hopped as well as their IPA which is called Diabolocal, which IIRC, is available at Ashley's now too. That is where my recommendation starts. IMO, there is nothing special about ABC (and thus, Corner Brewing-same stuff). I dont think Wolverine has opened yet. I think the rep at the beer festival said they were hoping for September. Blue Tractor, I like quite a bit, but the IPA there is rather lackluster (great BBQ though, IMO)
I'm not always in the mood for the belgian style (I am ALWAYS in the mood for an IPA) and these are, without a doubt, the best around. They are also available at Grizzly Peak or Blue Tractor, but in bottle only.
At Grizzly Peak, their IPA is on cask and is quite tasty, but for hopheads like us, I would recommend the pale ale instead actually. Duncan was working on a well hopped wheat which think may have been released by now, but I'm not 100% sure.
I love Ashley's but the staff there have really gone down tubes recently. There are a couple gems, but the rest just suck.
I miss the beer scene in AA, I just moved to Chicago and it sucks here in comparison.
|6 years 9 weeks ago||Basically, I think thats the||
Basically, I think thats the gist of it. I don't know a whole helluva lot about the distillation process (for whiskey, per say). As you can, imagine you can't boil off beer and collect it over and over again as you would for whiskey.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but when one is distilling a spirit, it basically goes through two or three different distillation processes. The first is collecting the vapor which is used as the spirit as is the second (where the spirit is put through different levels of cooling where the steam is still removed and used). The final stage is used to condense it.
For ice beer, basically, you lower the temperature to about freezing, or just shy of freezing, and remove the ice crystals. Bam. Higher concentrate.

Fantastic. They came out with Tactical Nuclear Penguin last year with was 32%. You can get higher alcohol by freezing the beer then getting rid of the frozen water. Presto, higher alcohol concentration. Thats often why beer with "ice" in the name have a higher ABV. IIRC thats how brewdog does it.
|6 years 9 weeks ago||This is without a doubt, the||
This is without a doubt, the best event of the summer. I've been going for the past few years and it keeps getting better and better as craft beer becomes more popular. Even the winter festival is a blast.
If you go, be sure to bring water and salty snacks. Food can be purchased, but it can get expensive. The water is not only to keep you hydrated on a blistering summer day, but to rinse out your taster between samples.
Gotta love drunk dials at 6pm on a Saturday afternoon! Have fun all who attend, you'll need to try hard not to. If we've convinced you into going, get your tickets in advance, they WILL sell out.

I've never had a problem asking bartenders to see if the game is on then leaving if they don't have it to find another bar that does. I've had really good luck at the Grizz this year. Also, the Arena has a good hockey crowd (for Wings games too). Connor's also is usually good about putting it on also.
As long as you know what station its on, you should be able to find it fine, just ask the bartender to switch to that station.

|6 years 29 weeks ago||I am of the "Hate Crosby"||
I am of the "Hate Crosby" camp. I told my friend's I'm more upset that he was the one that scored to beat us, than that we lost (also on that list would have been Iginla and Niedermayer, too, fwiw).
Here are some reasons for my hatred as well as (I think) other's hatred as well:
Why did we dislike Tebow? It wasn't because he was a bad PERSON but because ESPN was all over his nuts 24-7. Crosby is the same way with NBC and Versus (although, IMO, they were better during the Olympics). They vault him as the savior of the game of hockey. Ugh.
He is a very good hockey player, but there are, in my estimation, much better players in the NHL. I don't even think he's the best player on the Pens (Malkin, Fleury). Again, this is my opinion, so feel free to disparage me all you want for that (Brodeur, Malkin, Lindstrom, Ovechkin, IMO are all better hockey players).
Seconded on the whiny bitch point. He's a skill player that didn't like to get hit. That has gotten better though, I must say.
My last point, is simply me being a homer. The captain of the team that beat the Wings for the cup, I have to hate him. It's the same reason why, I imagine, so many people around here hated Vince Young or Matt Leinart. He did absolutely NOTHING in the cup finals last year (and very little in the playoff's overall, if I remember right). He is the captain least deserving of a Stanley Cup. Period.
My 2 cents.
 I NEVER actually thought that the ref's in that building would let us have the Gold. (however, usually, the home building does get the calls in the NHL, so I don't know why I was surprised). Regardless, I loved the grit and hustle of team USA and Miller was on it the whole tourney. I can't wait for 2014!

it totally depends on when you want to drink it. I did a double pale ale (reminiscent of Arrogant Bastard Ale) that was perfect for early/late fall. You for sure want something with balance. That you'll feel the alcohol warmth. What about an Amber Ale? Homebrewing is so much fun man, I'm glad you've joined our ranks!
p.s. I also did a porter I'm toying with naming Caracajous.

As far as campuses go, i think one can make a distinction between which is "better", HOWEVER, it must be clear what a prospective recruit wants. If you to live in a big city, then Columbus is a big city. If you want a college town, then Ann Arbor is a college town.
For example, my boss' dad is a huge OSU fan. When he (my boss) moved to southeast lower michigan (to take a job in detroit), his dad told him to go to Ann Arbor. "but you hate ann arbor", he said.
"Yeah, I hate UofM, but ann arbor is a great town."
Just an example.
