Man that chart is ugly. I count 115-333 from two-point land not under the net. Wow that's bad.

Well we all know why the ACT scores are not, um, balanced.
1st GPN grad to wear the winged wheel: Jimmy Carson. Who I pitched batting practice to as a youngster.

Legwand becomes the 2nd grad from Grosse Pointe North to play for the Red Wings. Go North!
You don't see those pansies from South producing Red Wings.

That right there is a pretty good sign you have a winning idea.

Yeah, that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. If it weren't in the context of hoops recruiting its a stunt that would attract the attention of law enforcement.
Frieder was a fractured soul that desperately needed affirmation from all the wrong sources. ASU gave him love and Frieder lost some of the drive he had here.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Many years back I happened to||
Many years back I happened to meet a guy who played ball with BJ Armstrong in HS. Would have been '86 or '87. I forget precisely why, but he had the chance to play some friendly hoops at Crisler. Just screwing around. Also got to watch a couple of practices. He described to me how the big names on the team would blatantly ignore Frieder whenever it suited them. Saw a couple of players mock Frieder behind his back. He had little control.
Freider's reputation as a recruiter is well known. Don't know if it exists online, but after Frieder left I remember some recruiting letters getting into print. I remember reading a couple. Embarassing stuff. I know coaches pump potential recruits up but some of the stuff reminded me of how shameful Nixon & Kissinger were when they met Mao. And Frieder was writing this stuff to kids in *7th* grade.
He got stars to campus and then could never rein them in. Its why his best teams often showed up well for big games but snoozed thru many.
And that '89 roster shouldn't have been a surprise to win it all. They should have been favorites. I believe 9 guys on that roster logged 1K+ minutes in the NBA. Give those guys to Dean Smith for a year and they win multiple titles going away.

There is *zero* chance we win the title with Frieder as coach. Frieder's success as recruiter was directly responsible for his failures as head coach.
|3 weeks 3 days ago||Great article, but its missing something||
Am a little bit surprised not to see our increase from '71 onward linked to the new auto labor contracts signed that year. This state's decline in wealth and population started in earnest then and the resultant decline in HS player quality plainly evident by '76.

I'd bet $ against it. Outside Sochi? I'd bet $ on that.

Remember all of the jokes made about those yokels in Utah? Mitt Romney & the Mormons look pretty darned good right now.

I would think the 4th Earl of Grantham should exhibit better manners.

And I'm really a fan of your posts. But fu*ar has been a thorn in my side since middle school.
My dad had an entire speech at my wedding about the name.

Cromulent is my nom de guerre. Not my "real" name.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Sorry||
I downvote any post that uses the acronym FU*AR. Too darn close to my name.

Rory Delap had many throws far better than that one. And there was a kid in these parts that had the same skill. OU product and one of my son's fave players Stu Givens.

To a young Lions' fan the sight of Fran Tarkenton running around was infuriating. Someday Tarkenton is going to assume room temperature and I'm going to dance a jig. I've been waiting a damn long time for that day.
When I was 6 I detested the Vikings as much as Ohio.
Though in FT's defense, how could one *not* suck on That's Incredible? At least he didn't give children nightmares, like Rhonda Bates on Speak Up America.

The new EMU coach will do better than you think.
|7 weeks 13 hours ago||UK NFL = pretty good||
Actually I spent a good portion of this NFL season watching streams of a UK feeds of NFL games. Can't remember the name of the thing. They had a couple of US guys leading the studio effort in a panel of 4. The US guys were bad and the top Brit analyst was fan-freakin-tastic. I'd bring him over here in a heartbeat.

Ok, so maybe I haven't had my yerba mate yet and I'm not thinking straight. Seems to me that ([# of plays gaining a first down]/[# of first downs started]) is always pretty close to 1. If you gain a first down, don't you get to "start" it?
|9 weeks 1 day ago||The '76 team was as||
The '76 team was as entertaining a Michigan squad as any that has followed since. That includes the national championship team, the Fab Five and last year's team. Give the '76 team a three point line and they'd average in the low 90s.
That year in the tournament they faced an undefeated Rutgers team that topped the NCAA in scoring average. Lots of biased East Coast media tooted their horn. Less than 10 minutes into the game we led 22-8. An object lesson in racehorse basketball.
Phil Hubbard was an all-time great Wolverine, yet he was not half the player he should have been. Never truly recovered from his broken leg. Was just a guy in the NBA and should have been more.
Great staff too: Orr on top with assistants Frieder and a certain Jim Dutcher. Though actually by '76 Dutcher had already left for Minnesota. You may remember his work - Kevin McHale anyone?
|9 weeks 1 day ago||Frieder was not a good coach.||
Frieder was not a good coach. One of the era's great recruiters, but therein laid the germ of his problems with player development and Xs & Os.
|9 weeks 1 day ago||You forget||
Um, no. Rickey Green had quite the 'fro in '76 and moves that Baxter could only dream of.

Yeah, that Indiana game I think was the last of the regular season. Epic stuff.
Some people would call Grote a hustler. My dad said he epitomized "leather jacket basketball". He said if Grote could get away with it he'd wear brass knuckles on the court.
My dad liked Grote a lot.

Felt bad for Rogers. After the first collarbone injury he stayed on the straight and narrow. Had a great rehab and looked fabulous in camp. Then the 2nd collarbone break and everything fell apart.

Army (and to a lesser extent Air Force) will not knock Navy off the top until they modernize their athletic departments. Full explanation here:

You got it. And there is plenty of distaste for AF's coach in particular. You should try Googling "air force" and "howdy doody".
