Maybe basketball isn't his primary criteria. No shame in saying we don't measure up academically to those schools.

I'm assuming that we are still planning on taking one in this class.

that they put their fists through a table when they get frustrated.
That and he doesn't actually teach them skills they'll be able to use in the NBA.

Could we offer Borges salary to doug Nussmeier the current OC at Bama, or Major Applewhite, the current OC at Texas? Or maybe we could try and get Bama's Ol coach, Cristobel.

As usual, Brian, you capture the moment perfectly.
|1 year 32 weeks ago||Your stuff is usually excellent, Brian||
but I think you've gone a little overboard here. Borges had a bad half calling plays with an offense of mismatched parts. But his QBs dropped the ball several times and missed passes badly on a few occasions. Yet we still only lost by five on the road to a team that is undefeated. Hardly a reason to go off the deep end and declare us to "be on the wrong side of history" That sounds a lot like the the "the same thing that just happened will always happen" analysis that you so rightly mock time after time.
Meyer's offense is good, but not devestating. Despite us handing them the ball time after time in the second half on our side of the field they never could punch it in against a defense with maybe one future pro on it, a slow secondary, and little if any pass rush. His offense might be better next year, but so will our defense, and we get them at home.
Comparing Meyer's offense to Oregon's is about as silly as comparing our defense to the Ravens because they call similar plays. And I notice that you negelected to mention the most recent Stanford/Oregon game in which the Ducks choked away their national title hopes at home by failing to score more than 14 points.
It was a painful loss, but one that was fully expected at the start of the year, and especially expected after Denard went down against Nebraska. The sky is not falling, the program is still trending in the right direction. In two years, Brady Hoke's record here (19-6) is slightly roughly the same as Harbaugh's last two years at Stanford (20-6), Meyer's last two years at Florida (21-6), and is better than Kelly's first two years at ND(16-10), Carr's first two years here(17-8), and Saban's first two years at Alabama (19-8). I think we'll be ok.

at the same time UVA gets a BIG invite, that will go a long way towards easing the political troubles.
The Hokies are a better fit in the SEC and UVA a better fit in the BIG.

We better be in the same division with OSU. Switch IU and Purdue with us and Sparty.

the picture of blood gushing from Zach Novak's head.
Or can't we do that without compromising his eligibility?
|2 years 37 weeks ago||Mr. Bacon||
You are a true gentleman and a scholar. If, as you suggest, the term "Michigan Man" still has any meaning left in it, it is embodied in your person and in your work. You make me proud to be a Michigan Wolverine, and that's more than I can say for Mr. Carr, Mr. Brandon, or many of the characters in your book.
|2 years 42 weeks ago||I'm not so sure I agree with Brian's conclusion||
so let's see, we scored all of our points and got most of our yards with Denard under center, but somehow the problem with the offense is that we need to run more shotgun?
I understand the concern about trying to duplicate the deep ball success of that game with a QB who has never been consistently accurate with long passes, but it seems to me you are too quickly dismissing the success we had passing the ball with Denard under center. I am by no means a football expert, but it seems to me that in the same way the spread opens up running lanes for Denard, the I formation could open up space for the wide receivers. On one of the TDs (Gallon's I believe), you mentioned that ND's reaction to the I formation resulted in one on one coverage on the outside (shouldn't that have been a RPS+1 by the way?) I have fond memories of watching Desmond destroy one on one coverage game after game because defenses lined up to stop our I formation and Ace double TE sets. Now you may be right that if we can't run the ball with our RBs out of the I, defenders will cheat to the outside, but that's true no matter what formation we use.
Bottom line, IMO, is that Denard can be successful in both formations, provided we don't ask him to throw the ball 50 times a game. We're in a very similar position to last year offensively. Last year the doubters wondered if Denard could hold up the whole year. They were right. This year doubters are wondering if the offense can be successful throwing "jump ball" passes. Let's hope the doubters are wrong, or Borges is smart enough to realize we need to give Denard some short or intermediate routes to work with.

Lowell is a pretty good HS football program, and for their coach to say he was worried about his kids going against Braden, well, that's a good sign for us.

Maybe his injuries are more significant that we've been led to believe.
I wonder how serious to take the listing of BWC at the one tech. I wonder if that's just a way to keep both QWash and him happy about their progress.

Several people have mentioned Casey's -- great pub food. It's small and can get kinda crowded at busy times, but service is usually top notch, and they have good daily specials.
Knight's Inn over by Vets Park feels like an old-time moose lodge in its decor, but has great prime rib, pork chops, and just about any other classic meat and potatos type of food. They have a bar in the center of the restaurant with a number of TVs always turned to sports,so its a reasonable game day alternative.

The last few years (four or five), they've kept the restaurant open until the end of November, although they often shut down the outdoor seating when it get too cold.

If Jim Tressel couldn't stop lying, why should Hoke stop telling the truth?
|3 years 8 weeks ago||My guess...||
if they investigate the car sales, two or three years probation, one or two year bowl ban, 10 to 20 scholarhsips over the probationary period, show cause order for Tressel.
If they stick with just Tatgate, it will be a show cause order for Tressel and one or two years probation, no scholarships or bowl ban.
|3 years 8 weeks ago||Many of the best nicknames are probably way before our time||
but here are a few ottomh:
The Guts and Glue of the Maize and Blue - Rick Leach
The Whirling Divirsh - Gordie Bell
Bo - Glenn E. Schembechler
AC - Carter
Dennis the Menace - Dennis Franklin
The Judge - Antoine Joubert
Captain Comeback - Jim Harbaugh - I think this name comes more from his NFL days than his Michigan career.
Fritz Crisler - Herbert O. Crisler
Hurryup - Fielding H Yost
|3 years 17 weeks ago||Depends on whether you are talking peak value or career value||
Webber was only a sophomore when he left. Give him two more years, and he would have been top 5 in a number of different categories.
|3 years 17 weeks ago||For those of us a little bit older than you, Brian||
The enigma that is Chris Webber cuts even deeper. I graduated from undergrad right before they got here, and I always felt a connection with them. They were beautiful to watch. They played with fire and an intensity that kept you on the edge of your seat. Imagine a team full of Mike Harts or of Denard Robinsons. The Duke game their freshman year that they almost won is probably the best game I've ever seen at Crisler. The Final four runs were full of games that were at times awesome and at times terrifying. They never did things the easy way. The final time out might have been as low a moment as we've ever witnessed in M basketball. There wasn't a single M fan whose heart didn't break watching Chris Webber bend over in pain after that play.
Yet when the whole Ed Martin thing broke a few years later, C Webb burned a lot of bridges by going on Detroit radio and calling out all the Michigan fans who were questioning him. "You're making yourself look very asisnine" He declared that he was no longer a Michigan Wolverine, and the school was dead to him. That hurt more than what he did to put us on probation.
He is our greatest basketball player, without a doubt. No one else is even close. He's also our biggest disappointment. Therein lies the rub.
