Condi is legendary for her love of football and a big time academic. She was perfect because she was well known enough and has the rep for loving football that allowed them to say we have a provost on the committee without people having no idea who she was.
|1 week 5 days ago||Beilein's the program's second winningest coach||
Took us to the brink of a national title, and a second Final Four, won 2 Big Ten titles, so yeah, they're pretty much in the same line. Best football coaches: Yost, Crisler, Bo, Carr (I do think there's an argument for Carr over Bo, but that's for a different thread). Best Basketball coaches: Orr, Strack, then Beilein or Fisher.
Both Carr and Beilein started to see a slip in play when they hit 60. Carr simply had the recruiting to get that year in 2006 where we didn't play anyone good until the final 2 games, which doesn't happen in basketball.
|1 week 5 days ago||Plenty of guys||
But Michigan needs to put up the money for it. We have more money than everyone else. There's no reason we can't have the highest paid football coach and at least a top 5 paid basketball coach. Leaders and Best, etc.
|1 week 5 days ago||Most of the people who think that are under 30||
And think the program was built solely on cheating (in reality, Webber was the only Fab Fiver and the other players in the scandal weren't that great). The Fab Five didn't go to Michigan because they got money.
|1 week 5 days ago||Depends on the money||
If we want to spend like we have the most, and can convince donors that basketball should be just as good as football, then hire Marshall, Bennett or Hoiberg (he makes 1.6 with the Bulls). If we have limited money, then Archie seems like the obvious pick.
The dream is Brad Stevens, but that would take Harbaugh money, which I doubt could ever happen since most of the blue blood donors seem to think of basketball as an afterthought.
|1 week 5 days ago||Had this in the other thread but he's just like late year Carr||
Hoping that changing assistants can help rejuviate parts of the game that have been poor, much less discipline than before, but without the program recruiting itself to have a 2006-style season (where we lost to the only 2 good teams we played)
|1 week 5 days ago||The Fab Five was one guy||
The way people in Ann Arbor talk about them you'd think that the entire team was getting paid. They also deserve to get their first banner put back up because they won their NCAA Tournament regional with all eligible players.

but without the recruiting inertia that allowed the 2006 season.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||As I've said, I'm not overly||
As I've said, I'm not overly concerned. Harbaugh is the best coach we can possibly have. However, per your take that there is no difference between 4 and 5 stars, as has been discussed over and over, there definitely is a higher chance they will be impact players. The guy who recognizes this is Harbaugh, luckily for us, which is why he's going after them the way he is.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Yes, exactly. A top 10 team.||
Yes, exactly. A top 10 team. Thats great and what we historically have been for the last 60 years (having won 1 national title). That's also the frustration and disappointment being expressed because the hope is higher than that. Michigan does a lot of talking about being the best while not winning championships. The thing I take exception to is "you're not a real fan" if you point that out. Harbaugh can hopefully change that, but the mountain to climb seems to be growing, which is why some on here are disappointed in losing another non-southern 5 star to a southern team.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||There's a huge gap||
OSU has 7 five stars and is number 2 with 18 players. It's one of the largest gaps in average player ranking in a long time, almost 3 points higher than number 3. Nearly 5 points higher than us. It's ok for fans to not view everything through maize and blue goggles. No one is saying the world is ending or the program is doomed.
OSU is about to land the most 5 stars ever, at least based on a cursory look over the composite rankings. There is no way to spin that we aren't being outrecruited by them.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Saban won the division in year 2||
and going 6-6 shows what state the program was in when he took over. There's no reason to panic because Harbaugh is a top 5 coach. We can't get a better coach. My only point to you is that it's fair to be disappointed and slightly concerned. There's no point in panicking. We're being outrecruited, and it's OK to recognize that, but our one strength is going to be QB, and that's often the great equalizer.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||It's a comparison to where||
It's a comparison to where Saban and Urban had their programs in year 2 (see post above). There's a huge gap between 2 and 3 this year in recruiting, and over the last 2 seasons there's a big gap between OSU and M. Like I said above, a few bounces go differently and we're talking about 12-1 and taking off, but it didn't happen. We finished 3rd again in our division, it's not being a bad fan to recognize that.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||It's more of a disappointment||
It's more of a disappointment that Harbaugh isn't Saban (twice), Urban (three times), or Carroll who had big time 2nd seasons after taking over big programs that had been struggling. A lot of what happened this year was bad luck, but it still happened. It doesn't make you a bad fan to recognize that, especially when you see our main rival recruiting like it's a video game. Hopefully Harbaugh's year 3 is like Saban's and Carroll's.
|2 weeks 1 day ago||Michigan is being crushed in||
Michigan is being crushed in recruiting by OSU and we went 10-3 with a loaded team, losing to OSU. It's not panic time, but you start looking at Oline recruiting and see OSU becoming Bama North, along with two straight 3rd places in our division, and it's definitely not fine and dandy either. The reason not to panic is there is no alternative. Harbaugh is the best we can do, even if that means he's like Bo and winning a lot of games but never a national title.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||They are different good||
They are different good options, what's hard to understand here? It would be very difficult to pick between the two.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Our current coach in no way ever said "F" Michigan||
He said that he wished his alma mater had the same high academic standards as Stanford, one of best 3 or 4 universities in the world, and it hurt the feelings of the wing of the alumni that wear the Harvard: The Michigan of the East shirts.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Beilein reminds me of a late-era Carr||
But without the recruits Carr ahd to cruise to winning 75% of his games. Reliant on assistants a little more, imprecision and undiscipline play in the team.

You must remember, when we land top recruits it's because of our coaches and wonderful campus and education, but when anyone else does it's because of bagmen.

I hate to break it to you, but the BCS and CFP were what made "meaningful" bowl games. The Rose Bowl, which I consider meaningful, hasn't changed: it's an exhibition between a good Big Ten and PAC 12 team usually

I thought OSU belonged in the playoffs, but it was ridiculous that they were number 3 and not number 4.
|3 weeks 2 days ago||No, it's the Seahawks||
No, it's the Seahawks mentality of trying to return every turnover for a TD that is hammered into them, which is why they have 15 defensive scores and have only given up 16 tds. It's called being dominant.

|5 weeks 2 days ago||Exactly right. We had one of||
Exactly right. We had one of the best football players in history on the team and the 1997 didn't have to beat one of the greatest coaches in history at the end of the season, nor did they have to play two of the top 4 to win the title. We just missed the playoffs with a defense likely better than 97 because we couldn't run the ball. So yes, it's nice we won with 2 rs freshman in 1997, that has zero relevancy.
|6 weeks 1 day ago||Michigan easily has a top ~40 win%||
And that's after taking a few great seasons off their total because of the scandal. They are top ~20 in Final Four appearances and are one of five programs who have won 65% of their tournament games. Michigan basketball was very much a prominent program until the AD abandoned because the Fab 5 scandal made donors feel uncomfortable.
Do you think Jordan went with Michigan merely because of football?
|6 weeks 2 days ago||This is the story||
One team recruits at a high level to match its facilities and prominence with a good coach, the other one is well coached, but does not recruit at the level of its facilities and prominence.
