Urban is probably 1B in college coaching to Saban's 1A. They'd both have 4 national titles if Urban hadn't been banned his first year at OSU. Luckily for us, for the first time in a long time, Michigan has a coach that is willing to compete against the best rather than starting out the season by talking about winning the Big Ten.

It's hard to say they should have beaten UNC. UNC potentially gave the game away, twice, but then didn't.

and we probably shoot up to top 5-8.
|4 weeks 3 days ago||MSU is definitely football first||
Every single MSU fan would trade their Final Fours for Rose Bowls.
|5 weeks 6 days ago||Be North Carolina?||
That's the only thing I can think of. Be more athletic and be able to score.
|6 weeks 15 hours ago||The only people who play the semantics game about "Detroit"||
Are people who've never left Michigan. Auburn Hills for the rest of the country is Detroit just like where The 49ers play is San Fran or Jerryworld is Dallas
|6 weeks 3 days ago||It's not that much of a stretch||
If we get past OK St (opening games are always a little crazy outside of top seeds), I think the Louisville-Michigan winner goes to the Final Four.
|6 weeks 4 days ago||The Fab Five should have their first banner hanging||
They won their region with eligible players, but the powers that be disliked them and were terrified that the scandal might affect football. That's why they brought the hammer and erased them completely despite being one of the most culturally significant things in school's athletic history. I'd be a little bitter too.
|6 weeks 4 days ago||And yet, people who know him say he didn't seem like he had $||
Almost like there's much more to the story.
|6 weeks 5 days ago||Not the same||
PSU had 2 losses and got blown out in one of them. It made it there because of flukey tiebreaks

Are you interested in buying a bridge? The only things that could probably set Pitino off like that are the death of his infant son or his buddy who died on 9-11.

even though it's usually better than what we do recruit. The football team fits the culture of what the university expects from a football team, but the basketball team doesn't fit what the culture expects from its basketball team. Michigan basketball got hit by a scandal and it stopped trying to be Michigan basketball and started trying to be Duke, Jr because donors were worried that football could be touched by it. There's a reason why Beilein's couple years of success came when he recruited guys whose game was more athletic and tough like M looked in the 80s and 90s than the current rendition of hope our threes go in. Guys like James Young from a few years ago and Josh Jackson should be going to Michigan.
|9 weeks 5 days ago||This isn't really true||
The State of Michigan produces tons of basketball talent every year. Before the blue bloods got scared that the basketball scandal might touch football and out the program in timeout, we were very much a top 10-20 program. Beilein has been good, but hopefully we're able to get back to operating with our peers with the next coach.

in the Gonzaga 1 seed bracket.

People are losing their minds.
|11 weeks 4 days ago||I think you're much more likely to see him run for Senate||
2020 may likely be an open seat in MA, he's expressed interest in politics, and it'd probably allow him to continue to fulfill that need for competition.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||The notion that Michigan,||
The notion that Michigan, which has the most money and whose state is filled with much more basketball talent than football talent, can't be a top program because of basketball is silly excuse making.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||This is absurdly wrong.||
This is absurdly wrong. Michigan basketball was very good for decades, then the scandal hit and we were bad for a decade, then we hired Beilein. Beilein merely has us back to what below average Michigan teams were before the scandal. The pearl clutchers in the donor class wanted a "certain style" of basketball. Hopefully they've moved past that since now Duke gets one and done players now.

Condi is legendary for her love of football and a big time academic. She was perfect because she was well known enough and has the rep for loving football that allowed them to say we have a provost on the committee without people having no idea who she was.
|15 weeks 2 days ago||Beilein's the program's second winningest coach||
Took us to the brink of a national title, and a second Final Four, won 2 Big Ten titles, so yeah, they're pretty much in the same line. Best football coaches: Yost, Crisler, Bo, Carr (I do think there's an argument for Carr over Bo, but that's for a different thread). Best Basketball coaches: Orr, Strack, then Beilein or Fisher.
Both Carr and Beilein started to see a slip in play when they hit 60. Carr simply had the recruiting to get that year in 2006 where we didn't play anyone good until the final 2 games, which doesn't happen in basketball.
|15 weeks 2 days ago||Plenty of guys||
But Michigan needs to put up the money for it. We have more money than everyone else. There's no reason we can't have the highest paid football coach and at least a top 5 paid basketball coach. Leaders and Best, etc.
|15 weeks 2 days ago||Most of the people who think that are under 30||
And think the program was built solely on cheating (in reality, Webber was the only Fab Fiver and the other players in the scandal weren't that great). The Fab Five didn't go to Michigan because they got money.
|15 weeks 2 days ago||Depends on the money||
If we want to spend like we have the most, and can convince donors that basketball should be just as good as football, then hire Marshall, Bennett or Hoiberg (he makes 1.6 with the Bulls). If we have limited money, then Archie seems like the obvious pick.
The dream is Brad Stevens, but that would take Harbaugh money, which I doubt could ever happen since most of the blue blood donors seem to think of basketball as an afterthought.
|15 weeks 2 days ago||Had this in the other thread but he's just like late year Carr||
Hoping that changing assistants can help rejuviate parts of the game that have been poor, much less discipline than before, but without the program recruiting itself to have a 2006-style season (where we lost to the only 2 good teams we played)
|15 weeks 2 days ago||The Fab Five was one guy||
The way people in Ann Arbor talk about them you'd think that the entire team was getting paid. They also deserve to get their first banner put back up because they won their NCAA Tournament regional with all eligible players.
|15 weeks 2 days ago||He reminds me of Lloyd Carr in his final years||
but without the recruiting inertia that allowed the 2006 season.
|15 weeks 5 days ago||As I've said, I'm not overly||
As I've said, I'm not overly concerned. Harbaugh is the best coach we can possibly have. However, per your take that there is no difference between 4 and 5 stars, as has been discussed over and over, there definitely is a higher chance they will be impact players. The guy who recognizes this is Harbaugh, luckily for us, which is why he's going after them the way he is.
