Date Title Body
Johnston is really good

But any Ohio State fan would tell you Alabama's JK Scott "is the best field position flipper in the country"

I'm not sure why he would I'm not sure why he would want to rub it in Meyer's face, play against his best friends, and play for his favorite team's rival.
Regarding coordinators surviving coaching changes

Urban Meyer has retained the defensive coordinator at every school he has coached at (Fickell, Charlie Strong <Who had like 30 titles at Florida>, Kyle Whittingham, and Tim Beckman).  Half of them have gone on to be damn good head coaches.

The referee was wrong

Therefore Meyer is an asshole

Stunning conclusion.

This sounds like

The beginning on the ONANNCAA

I think the number is

20 or something close to that.  We have 5 verbals so far.

He does more

Than go to a party/bar here and there (He'll actually go to a bunch in one night) to interact with students.

I have no idea why he would tweet that, but I would assume it's because he's a busy guy who lost track of his schedule.  He probably likes people to think he gets to the game an hour early to cheer and w/e when the reality is he probably shows up whenever he can and stays for as long as he can.  It is, however, quite entertaining.

Meyer's past

What's that?  Winning everywhere he goes and recruiting elite players?

I don't know

I think that the biggest reason the students love him is the guy is everywhere.  I don't know how many other university presidents show up at house parties or bars.

He did go out and hire Urban Meyer, so I don't think there will be much drop in football.

He isn't good with sports stuff

Who cares?

He is the CEO of a university system with a 5.2 billion dollar budget.  He is universally loved by the ~55,000 students.  He has spearheaded fundraising 1.6 billion dollars since coming back to OSU.  He is the highest paid public university president, and he is widely considered to be one of, if not the, best.  People who think he should have been fired for the Tressel stuff have no idea what they're talking about.  Who cares.  It's just football.

OSU

Has first class facilities and a great coach.  They've been a sleeping giant in basketball for longer than Michigan has.

Duke

I'll bet he ends up at Duke after Coach K.  It's one of the best jobs in CBB and it will open before any comparable job in the Big Ten.

Fragel and Simon

Had amazing games against Michigan State and Nebraska respectively, and those are the two OSU games Steele is most likely to have watched.

Bob Stoops

Is a defensive coach

Ohio State's

Top two running backs are injured.  Jordan Hall has missed the last two games with a foot injury and might be back this week while Carlos Hyde sprained his MCL early against UCF.

People

Talk about Bowden that way because he hung on for about ten year  too long.

The Big Ten

Is pretty clearly better than or just as good as all non SEC conferences.

The Big 12 is about the same as the Big 10 and might be better in the long run with the addition of WVU, but it's close.

Pac 12:  Oregon and USC are awesome, but what's after that?  A Stanford team that beat SJSU by 3?  A Washington team that beat San Diego State by 9?  Utah?  Cal?  Ya, no......

ACC:  Come on.  Florida State is theoretically an elite team.  Theoretically.  Clemson?  EDSBS fans know what to say here, or you could just reference last year's Orange Bowl.  Virginia Tech is the ultimate paper tiger.

The whole SEC >>>>>>>>> Slow white kids from the Big Ten is so overplayed.  The SEC owns everyone.  Not just the Big Ten.

That's a pretty serious overstatement

He isn't going to start, and I doubt he is the first linebacker off the bench.

Walterfootball

Great articles and player rankings.

In what world

Is 14/31, 188 yards, 2 TDs, and 4 interceptions better than 85/157, 1159 yards, 13 TDs, and 4 interceptions?

I suspect

Ezekiel Elliott (RB) will be OSU's highest rated offensive player by NSD.  Between that and having Rod Smith (RS Soph), Dunn, and Ball on the roster running back probably has more depth than any unit other than the defensive line.

I doubt it

Penn State only has a few players who could come and start for a team like OSU right away, and most play positions where the Buckeyes are especially strong.  No senior is going to want to transfer from one bowl ban to another anyway.

I would bet most PSU transfers end up in the MAC or Big East.

Weeden did not

Quite do the same thing.  He (And Joe Bauserman) both retired from baseball after flaming out in the minors; they just enrolled in college not right out of HS.

And that

He's from Ohio and his first college coaching job was under Earl Bruce at Ohio State.

Seriously?

"But he was WILDLY inaccurate, more-so than young Denard ever was on his worst day, injured even"

Denard Robinson freshman stats:  14/31, 188 yards, 2 TD, 4 ints

Did you watch any of that?

Even though

There isn't as much talent the offensive line should play better than last year.  Playing in a spread offense instead of telehraphed run, telegraphed run, play action on third and long Bollman nightmare last year is a massive plus.  I don't think they'll be great, but it should be a decent unit.  The problem is they can't sustain more than one serious injury AT ALL.

Klein

Has been dismissed from the team.

“The charges filed against Storm Klein violate the core values of the Ohio State Football Program,” Meyer said in a statement. “As a result, Storm has been removed from the team. It has been made very clear that this type of charge will result in dismissal. If there are any changes in the charges, we will re-evaluate his status.”

I don't think

Rodman was ever underrated as a rebounder by anyone who knew what they were talking about.  He did lead the NBA in RPG seven years in a row.

With basically a full class

50% > 36%

Offensive line

Is the biggest priority for Ohio State over the next couple of months.  Our major targets have already committed elsewhere, but thankfully there is still a year of HS football to be evaluated and 8 months between now and signing day to try and flip whoever.

Rod Smith

Has two years of experience on him and was also a highly touted recruit (Rivals #65 overall), so Dunn will have to beat him out to get serious carries while Hall is out.  He should be a good player down the line, but I think people tend to exaggerate the impact freshman can make unless they're absolutely transcendent talents (Think Adrian Peterson).

Playing QB for Ohio State

Has absolutely nothing to do with why OSU has not had any good NFL QBs.  Posiion X from school Y = NFL bust makes absolutely no sense.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tried to hire Chip Kelly.

Academic Scholarships

Can't be given to football players because it's an obvious way to skirt the 85 man scholarship limit.

Jim Tressel

Knew Karl Towns was going to be coached by John Calipari in November.

Calipari

Represents everything that is wrong with college sports.

Steele

Steele doesn't usually know what he is talking about; he is the most accurate predictor of conference standings over the past 14 years.

And a man crush on OSU?  Because putting Ohio State in the top 20 on an annual basis is insane....

Freshman

On defense the only freshman who is going to get playing time right away is Noah Spence.  There isn't anyone on the roster who has close to his speed at defensive end, and even though he isn't on campus yet, Meyer has said numerous times that as soon as he is, he is going to get a chance to get on the field and make plays.

Taylor Decker, Kyle Dodson, and Jacoby Boren will all get a chance to make an impact on the offensive line, but unfortunately that is much more a product of our complete lack of quality depth on the offensive line than anything else.

Better ones

I actually think this could be the best defense Ohio State has fielded in a few years.  The only defensive starter lost from last year is Sweat, and while he was a solid LB, he certainly wasn't anything close the lead LBs OSU has had over the past decade.

The defensive line should be absolutely dominant with Simon and Hankins in the lead roles and a LOT of very good and experienced players around them.  The linebackers are a little bit of a question mark because of inexperience, but the talent is there.  Shazier and Grant's ability to step up (Or Sabino finally putting it all together.....) is by far the most interesting question on this side of the ball.  The corners are excellent, and while the safeties aren't a true strength Barnett has been constantly singled out as a player who really stepped it up this spring.

Carter

He looked misserable on the OL last year, and I seriously doubt he was ever going to get much better.  He looked pretty good at DT for a guy switching over from the offensive side of the ball, and his size along makes him an intriguing prospect at the position.

Power running game

Carlos Hyde is 6'0'' 230, and even though Meyer's offense is almost entirely shot gun based, there are a lot of power running plays.

Guiton

Guiton is actually going into his fourth year (RS Junior).

Offensive Stuff

Receivers and offensive line are by far our two biggest issues.

The fact that all the receivers got on the field last year is nice, but our offense being an absolute mess didn't lead to them really doing anything with their playing time.  Unless Philly Brown really steps it up there probably aren't any legitimate playmakers.  However, Jake Stoneburner should be able to do some serious work in a TE/WR hybrid role.

While Brewster and Adams are huge losses, I expect the OL to play better than last year because of the move to a much simpler blocking scheme/better coaching.  Pass protection will still be a big issue, and this is by far the biggest weakness of the team (Not to say we're absolutely loaded everywhere).  They should be very good at creating space in the running game though.  I think the biggest concern here is the fact that there is literally no quality depth unless some true freshman step it up (Taylor Decker has supposedly looked very good and may end up starting at RT though).

The one thing that should be very good is the running game.  Jordan Hall has the ideal spread running back skill set, and Carlos Hyde is a big, powerful runner with deceiving speed.  Neither are exceptional, but collectively they should make for a very nice outside/inside running game.  Hall's ability as a receiver will also allow them to get on the field at the same time too.  Of course, the biggest factor in the running game will be Braxton Miller.  Having more than two designed QB running plays (Pistol speed option and 5 wide QB draw) will be beneficial to both the execution and aesthetics of the offense, and Miller has already proven he is a lethal runner.

Another thing on Miller.  Even though he looked like a much better passer in the spring game, I don't think that will be a truly dangerous part of his game for another year (If ever). Both his play and production as a passer should be much better than last year for an assortment of reasons, but defenses are definitely still going to have the most success against us by shutting down the run and making us throw.
