Cornell, like Nebraska, is a land grant university (as is MIT). It has an entire college of Agriculture and Life Science with an international reputation. The Medical School is in New York City, not Ithaca.

 ASU is a very innovative…

The high admissions rate is partly due to the number of applicants, but mainly it's ASU's mission of using innovative methods to provide as many qualified students as possible with a good quality, higher education that they can access and afford. ASU is a very innovative university; I read that they just opened a branch campus in Los Angeles, and I agree with SBayBlue that Barrett, ASU's Honors College, is excellent by any standard.

Play the man used to be a fundamental principle in a one-on-one breakaway. Was there some reason he couldn't?

I’m not a lawyer and don’t…

I’m not a lawyer and don’t know how the Ohio statutes would be interpreted, but the UM law profs. teach medical students some law. (At least they used to, and since it turned out to be quite useful in practice, I hope they still do.) I looked up the Ohio statute about mandatory reporting of domestic violence.

Any nurse who has reasonable cause to believe that a patient or client has been the victim of domestic violence, as defined in section 3113.31 of the Revised Code, shall note that knowledge or belief and the basis for it in the patient's or client's records.

As general rule, any person with knowledge of a felony, second or third degree burn injuries, or a death must report it to law enforcement authorities. There are some exceptions when information is privileged, including for an advanced practice registered nurse-patient relationship or a husband-wife relationship.

Airfares Skiplagged and Skyscanner can be useful. For domestic carriers, I prefer JetBlue, Virgin America, Southwest and Alaska, but that’s likely affected by where I’m going.

Ann Arbor VA The Ann Arbor VA is a teaching hospital for the University of Michigan Medical School and a specialty referral center. Many medical staff members have Medical School Faculty appointments, and UMHHC is topnotch in neurology and neurosurgery — easily top ten. I agree with Arb Lover. If a veteran who needs health care shows up with his DD 214 and photo ID, he’ll get help enrolling. It can be done quickly. Needed care will generally be provided at no cost.
Mitch Daniels is serious about academics. Mitch is not only Purdue’s president, he was the Governor of Indiana for 8 years and the Director of the U.S Office of Management and Budget under George W. Bush. He’s a very smart guy — U.S. Presidential Scholar, Princeton, Georgetown Law, Director of the Hudson Institute Think Tank, etc.

The sun symbol of the Zia

The sun symbol of the Zia pueblo represents the Circle of Life with the sacred number four in the rays symbolizing the four directions, the four seasons, the four times of day (sunrise, noon, evening, night) and the four stages of life (childhood, youth, adulthood and old age.

Women's ice hockey

Why should all the girls who play ice hockey in Michigan high schools have to leave Michigan to play in college?

It is confusing.

Veterans Day in the U.S. and Rembrance Day (Poppy Day) in Canada both started as Armistice Day, honoring those who had died in The Great War. But the U. S. has an older tradition of decorating the graves of soldiers who died in the American Civil War with flowers in May. "Decoration Day" in May became Memorial Day, honoring those who died in war (this is the "poppy day" in the U.S.), and Nov 11 became a holiday when all veterans are honored.

Michigan alumni have each other's backs!

Countess is an alumnus who just made a hard choice. He undoubtedly got his coaches' advice. (Remember Mattison's involvement in Blake's recruitment and reaction when he committed and signed.) He worked hard, did his best when faced with adversity, and earned our respect.

The tolerance for alcohol by a chronic alcoholic is mind-boggling. Part of being addicted is it takes more and more to feel the same effects and to keep from feeling withdrawal effects.

I have no reason, whatever, to doubt Dr.Andrews. But to be fair, he's a medical director and team orthopedist for Auburn.

Good advice re Claremont and

Good advice re Claremont and Pasadena. Both have nice college/university communities. Aim to be reasonably near a Metrolink station (Park and Ride, bicycle, short bus trip or even walking) so you won't fight the traffic. Around UC-Irvine or beach towns (Newport, Huntington), would also be my choice in OC.  Don't sweat about it, but before you finally settle on a place, spend a few minutes online checking the streetgang maps, faultlines and firezones.

As a physician, I have an

As a physician, I have an obligation to question this decision. The head of the sports medicine department could have allowed more time for rehab, before making a decision. He had a moral and legal duty to put his patient's best interests first. Did he fail to do so?

When physicians aren't sure

When physicians aren't sure about a case like this, they rely on "expectant mananagement," aka "tincture of time" to determine what to do. There was no medical reason, it seems, why Ohio State could not have used this wait-and-see approach. So ethically-speaking, the team physician should have delayed making a recommendation, in his patient's best interest.

Dryden's mask

Dryden's first masks were smaller and the design resembled a ski mask. But as masks got larger, he modified the design to look like a target, with a red circle, shaped like the Canadiens' logo, inside a blue one.

Best wishes!

The oncology nurses at the U. are wonderful!

GRBluefan already mentioned my two fave's from when I was in med school. I'll add that the Arb has a lot of side trails off the main paths, if you want to be alone for awhile. It's a short walk from the Med Center to one of the entrances, and it's free, so you can go over there anytime from dawn to dusk.

Losing real journalists

As the traditional newspapers continue to fold, I think the biggest loss is their support of good, local investigative reporting.

Red loves Michigan. He knows he'll be hanging them up, and that Hackett needs both his help and the right timing to secure the best possible coach for Michigan hockey.

Michigan Tech was certainly a

Michigan Tech was certainly a college hockey power in the '60s and '70s under Coach John MacInness, a UM grad who was the goalie for Michigan's 1950 NCAA champions and a director of Ann Arbor Amateur Hockey. However, Tech won one NCAA title in the '70s (in 1975), while both Minnesota (Herb Brooks) and Boston University (Jack Kelley and Jack Parker) won three. A case could also be made for Cornell (Ned Harkness), which had the only undefeated and untied team in NCAA history in 1970, and had other great teams in the late '60s with Ken Dryden in goal. And Murray Armstrong, who was demoted from the Red Wings by Jack Adams in favor of an 18 year-old named Gordie Howe, coached Denver University to four NCAA championships in the '60s.

The Ivy presidents approved

The Ivy presidents approved freshman eligibility in 1993, but not all members took advantage. Since the Ivies don't allow regular redshirting or grad students to be eligible, some schools would have had freshmen on the roster who weren't permitted to play or have a fifth year.

You are correct.

What drives me nuts are the inflated costs, that make better quality unaffordable.

It isn't a bad rule.

As others have pointed out, there are legitimate ways to receive necessary assistance, which do not break the rules. The Sunshine Act doesn't say you can't send flowers to a doctor whose husband died. It does say you/your employer must report it.

90% of undergrads at the U of

90% of undergrads at the U of California are California residents. UC is one university with ten campuses (like North Campus, Central Campus, and South Campus at Michigan), rather than a system, and it's about the same percentage at each of the undergrad campuses. Currently the top 9% of California high school graduates are guaranteed admission to the university -- though not necessarily to a preferred campus -- if they meet the other requirements (a-g specified courses and admissions tests). Students may take courses on other campuses without extra fees, enroll in study abroad programs, borrow books from libraries, use recreation facilities, etc. And diplomas are awarded by the University of California, not a campus.

The onus is on the universities.

What kind of deception is acceptable for a university employee? The president/chancellor or provosts should be reviewing this, not the NCAA. If they would not accept a coach deliberately deceiving them, they should be very clear that they will not tolerate it at al!

A sense of entitlement

I think a sense of entitlement is part of it. As a grad student, I picked up a little cash by proctoring exams. Another proctor and I saw suspicious activity one afternoon and arranged for handgrading of an entire row of students. This was over 40 years ago at an Ivy League university.

They were SA's, mostly freshmen and sophomores. They failed the exam, the course, and did not place out of a language requirement, but they were not expelled for cheating. But if it could happen at a school without athletic scholarships or freshman eligibility, it could happen anywhere.

The numbers are only a cut

The numbers are only a cut point. Beyond that, the admissions committee considers 1) Will this applicant be a good doctor?  2) What will this applicant add to the class we are crafting?  3) What's the applicant's potential?

Bravo! Red Baron

4 =  number of NCAA head coaches with 800 wins

Outside the box thinking

Putting deformable shock absorbers on the outside of hard shell helmets is a no-brainer. The harder problem is people have to be willing to wear them in games as well as in practices in order to prove they're effective. And to be ethical, that kind of human trial can only be done with uncoerced volunteers.

Many parents make greater sacrifices

Many parents make greater sacrifices than not seeing a live game. Are the parents of a band member, somehow, less deserving than those of a football player?  Or the parents of a student presenting a research paper at a national meeting?  How about the parents of students who are hospitalized, receiving an honor, or graduating?
