At least MSU is back to winning games by luck, strange circumstances, or controversy.
That's how it used to be: Michigan winning most of the games with Spartan victories coming amid fortunate bounces and one in a million incidents. So far, in 6 games, Harbaugh and his staff coached these players (recruited under another coach and a mediocre, emergency quarterback) to come within 10 seconds of a win over a team that had outscored them 64-17 in the last 2 games.
I expect a Harbaugh-led Michigan program to fully restore the rivalry by winning 2 of the next 3 at a minimum.

Norfleet has been severely underutilized and devalued as an offensive contributor at Michigan. As one of the only, if the only truly explosive player on offense (speed-wise, anyway), he should have a MUCH bigger role on every series. To open with App State and end with Miss State. That's rough. I was 1993-1997.
As a band member, I personally witnessed: Gary Moeller/Lloyd Carr transition, Remy Hamilton with the game winner at ND '94 (Michigan fans rushing the field in South Bend), Kordell Stewart, Biakabutuka rush for 313, Purdue '95 (the coldest I've ever been), Purdue '96 (very disappointing), Tyrone Wheatley, Charles Woodson, Virginia '95 (Driesbach-Hayes to complete the comback and win 18-17 in the 4th quarter...also, Lloyd's first game as head coach), Bowl losses to A+M and 'Bama, Bowl wins over Colorado State and NC State. 4 years sandwiched between Rose Bowls.
That was back when we thought 8-4 was kind of a bad season. I remember being disappointed that I never got to march in a Rose Parade. Somehow, the expectiations have fallen since then.

|2 years 26 weeks ago||Where's all the uproar about||
Where's all the uproar about Nuss? Hate on Hoke all you want (and a lot of it is deserved), but, it certainly seems to me that Hoke is a 'manager' type coach. He's the head coach and ultimately responsible for the direction of the program. To that end, he clearly hires people to run the offense, defense, special teams, etc and steers clear of any real direct interference (see: no headset/direct play calling influence on gameday). Hoke has a vision of what he wants and hires guys around him whom he thinks can best develop that vision.
So - doesn't Nuss get some blame here? I don't hear much ire directed his way. That's not entirely fair, IMO.

|3 years 5 weeks ago||Love these moves. Burleson:||
Love these moves.
Burleson: The Lions are in desperate need of positive veteran leadership. Burleson was the antithesis of that. Offering yourself up as the media spokesperson for the team does not make you a leader. It makes you a loud mouth. His attitude and team leadership skills (or lack thereof) have a direct relationship with Detroit being one of the most penalized teams in the NFL. The Lions can get the same production (or better) across from CJ with many other receivers in the league for cheaper. Plus, they don't have to put up with his "talk first" attitude. The only thing that worries me is how Detroit is going to live without Burleson's first down celebrations. God only knows they need more of that kind of crap on the team.
Delmas: Often injured and a rare sight on the practice field, Delmas is another Lion with more talk than game. Frankly, I'd MUCH rather have a safety who is known as a good tackler rather than a big hitter. He won't be missed...unless you like to watch the Detroit D give up big plays.
The Lions are the most undisciplined football team I've ever seen. By shedding these contracts and the negative leadership of these players, Detroit is on its way to maximizing the talent they currently have. I didn't expect much out of the new coaching staff, but, if this is any indication of what's coming - maybe...just maybe...things are looking up.

|3 years 19 weeks ago||I don't remember that many||
I don't remember that many quick passes. I do remember a couple of short throws over the middle into LB traffic to Funchess. One dropped. One caught for minimal gain.
I guess I was just looking for more passing plays that weren't so slow in developing. Play action under center, 7 step drops, etc, all ask the OL to read/hold their blocking assignments for a longer period of time. That's what I meant about "suspect OL issues" and what not. Why ask your OL to do more than they are apparently capable of at this point? Especially against such strong opposition? With a week to prepare?
This may seem like a strange comparison, but, just roll with it. 2 years ago the Detroit Lions make the playoffs with nary a running game to be found. TE screens, quick passes, et al were a worthy substitute for their lack of running game. That seemed to take advantage of their OL "issues" pretty well.
I suppose we just agree to disagree here. I want Michigan to maximize it's current talent and put their players in the best position to compete and win. I just don't see our current offensive scheme doing that.
Nice Fletch reference, btw. Kudos.
|3 years 19 weeks ago||Great post - thanks for compiling all that||
IMHO at the end of the day, you have to beat the teams you are supposed to beat (PSU '13 for example) and at least be competitive with rivals (MSU, OSU).
Stats are one thing. Showing up and putting your players in the best position to win the most important games is another.
Seems to me that Hoke/Borges have an antiquated notion of offensive football. To them it seems to be all about trying to get the best pro prospect recruits at Michigan and using your talent advantage to beat the other team. Michigan used to be one of those teams years ago. The simple fact is that the college game has changed. In fact, the college game is now impacting the PRO game...not the other way around anymore.
My point is - scheme and strategy can level the playing field when it comes to talent disparity. Michigan needs to update their offensive mindset to this century.

|3 years 19 weeks ago||“It’s not hard to game plan.||
“It’s not hard to game plan. You just need to put the pieces together and hope like heck that under pressure your young players can perform. A couple weeks ago against a lesser defensive opponent, we did a pretty good job. But like you asked me a couple weeks ago, ‘Did you gain any confidence?’ I said, ‘I’ll tell you after this game.’ Well this brings you back down to earth on where you are against teams that you have to play – the margin of error against really good defensive teams is small. We had just too many errors put us in bad situations. And it wasn’t always the younger guys. The middle of our offensive line is young, and things come up sometimes.”
Yep. Just keep blaming the kids, Al. Youth, inexperience, injuries, errors, blah blah blah.
Nevermind the fact that you apparently can't design or implement any kind of quick passing scheme that might be able to take advantage of aggressive defenses or suspect OL talent/synergy issues.

|3 years 22 weeks ago||Yep. And a fumbled snap in a||
Yep. And a fumbled snap in a critical situation. Also against one of the worst defenses in the Big 10 (if not currently the worst). IMO, Gardner is better from the gun just like Denard was. I think the numbers and eyeball tests support that.
The offensive results from this game neither exonerate nor condem Borges entirely for me. His gameplan vs. PSU (and other past games which have been discussed ad nauseum on this website) is a problem, though. Additionally, the lack of a consistent short, quick hitting passing game that emphasizes that strengths of his offensive staff (young, somewhat mistake prone, and easily rattled QB as well as short/quick receivers like Gallon, Dileo, Norfleet), minimizes the shortcomings of a young and injured OL, and takes advantage of what the defense is "giving up" (10+ yard cushions on WRs) is a concern.
It's okay to want to be a power running, under center first...then hit 'em big downfield with the play action pass type of team. Even if that's your intended normal mode of attack there needs to be some variety in your playbook (and willingness to call those plays) in order to score when your preferred method isn't working or when the defense has reviewed the film on your run formations and knows the playcall before the snap. Had Borges and company done that against PSU, UM would be undefeated right now.
|3 years 22 weeks ago||Nice call||
Too bad he didn't continue that. UM would still be undefeated.
|3 years 22 weeks ago||Aw shucks||
What's the deal with calling the "fire screen" to the WR against IU and not PSU? Decisions like that are what prompts an "aw shucks" mentality, from me anyway.
Borges was able to "take what the defense was giving" against IU largely due to the fact that the IU defense was giving everything away. Against PSU, he showed zero ability to do so.

And then we get into the 11 personnel and he’ll be a tight end. Just trying to really take advantage of his skill sets.”
Nice to hear this and actually see evidence of it on the field. Enjoyed watching the staff really work with the talent they have and highlighting the strengths of their individual players.
Now, if they can just figure out a way to utilize Norfleet less obviously, target Dileo more often, and retroactively have Denard throw less and run more in the MSU Trash Tornado and the ND Interception Nightmare loss that would be great. Asking too much?
|3 years 26 weeks ago||Ugh.||
More misuse of talent and lack of creativity on offense. I just don't get it.
"Don't give it to Norfleet. It would be nice if Dennis Norfleet was treated like a slot receiver instead of a rapidly expiring steak when he is inserted in the game. Any time he sees the field right now it's going to be a gimmicky play involving him. As soon as those things get on film they're dead meat.
It is okay to put him on the field and have him, you know, run an out or something. Or just run the ball as Dennis Norfleet runs a bubble or something, if you ever did anything so outlandish as fake a bubble screen in this offense. Ironic that the main reason submitted for not doing such things is that it is insufficiently manball to occupy a guy with screen action when you could be blocking him instead. Michigan can't block for crap.
Anyway. Norfleet's symptomatic of the offense's larger problem where plays exist as small subsets of things that work together instead of a consistent whole.\\\

|4 years 17 weeks ago||Borges Fail||
The simplest way to describe the failure of Al Borges is by asking the following question:
What would Urban Meyer have done with Denard Robinson on OSU's team? Do you think that Braxton Miller would've been pulled in order to insert Denard for QB keepers? Hell. To. The. No. The list that Brian mentions in this post about plays involving Denard would just be the beginning. If Denard was on Meyer's team OSU would've torched UM yesterday. It wouldn't even have been close. Urban Meyer would recognize that Denard on the field in any capacity makes all of his teammates better.
"Everybody" wanted Denard in as a RB. "He's not a QB." "Line him up in the backfield or in the slot" was shouted for the last 4 years. A throwing arm injury drops this possibility in Michigan's lap 3 weeks ago. It's perfect. A chance to keep Denard's legs involved without having to worry about his arm limitations. Not to mention the simulatneous and surprising emergence of a very talented athlete and QB in Devin Gardner. And Borges blows it. Total fail.
Brian is exactly right here:
"It's indefensible. It's a failure without any possible explanation."
|4 years 17 weeks ago||Prediction||
UFR will have Lewan graded out to his worst game of the season. I seem to remember him looking sheepish on several plays. Very out of the ordinary for him, IMHO.
|4 years 17 weeks ago||Quality post. Pretty||
Pretty disappointing play calling today. I just don't understand how the offense can be more creative against Iowa than against OSU. I don't remember any play calls that used Denard as a decoy at all. So much for Borges "staying up nights this week" thinking about what to do with both Devin and Denard in the game at the same time.
Denard = run (usually, QB run)
Devin = pass after pointless play action to Rawls
Why not run play action off of something you actually do?
In fact, don't even remember seeing Denard in the 4th quarter at all (I did miss the last 5 minutes, tho). Maybe he was injured?
I hope some Borges gets some questions about this in the post game presser (not that it'll make any difference or that he will answer them). Also, Hoke should get some criticism for the decision to go for it on 4th and 3 after using the timeout. Punt and lean on your stellar defense by giving them some field position. Especially on the road. That seemed like a pretty obvious miscalculation to me.
This gameplan felt like a lot of wasted opportunity and leaves me longing for what could've (probably should've) been.

I don't understand why this play isn't used more. Seems like a short pass like that is much easier for Denard to throw.

|4 years 26 weeks ago||Off the top of my head||
Off the top of my head recently:
I think Brian (and others here) bring it in terms of data.
I don't want to split hairs about how much has to be "wrong" in the <insert game plan here> to be declared a "debacle." The case for Denard's strengths not being optimized in this offense and by this coordinator is well thought out and argued on this blog. It is not just the spewings of a fly by night color commentator or sports journalist. It's a reasoned and detailed analysis with examples to back up that point of view.

"...and run play action off plays you actually run and then Denard might get back to the things he was doing in an offense that was not trying to jam him into a hole he clearly does not fit. I thought maybe we'd learned that lesson after Iowa, but apparently not."
Right on, Brian.
Borges continues to try and square the circle utilizing Denard. You're not the only one who has noticed, but, you may the only one who uses solid data (citing the 17 games of Borges regime) to back up the theory.

This game is and always was ultimately meaningless for Michigan. Win and it's the miracle scenario putting Michigan in the national championship hunt. Lose and it's just expected. Lose with Denard getting hurt? That's the nightmare.
It's already bad enough with Countess and Lewan (not sure how bad he's hurt) going down in a game where Michigan had nothing to gain by playing.
You think people are dark today with the outcome...imagine the headline of "Denard done for the year" on this blog. Yeesh. Let's play some opponents that matter, please.

|5 years 9 weeks ago||1995||
My junior year at Michigan (I was there during the 4 years sandwiched between Rose Bowl trips). I'm actually (almost) in the picture up there where Mercury Hayes is hauling in that pass....right behind the ref, in the band, to the tenor drummer's right, in the front row. I remember Butterfield dropping a pass with about 4 seconds left in the middle of the field on the play JUST before the final pass. I remember feeling lucky that he dropped it because UM had no timeouts and wouldn't have been able to stop the clock.
My favorite player during those years (93 - 97) was Ninef F. Aghakhan. The DL with the very intimidating last name. Actually, I'm pretty sure that "The Agh" graduated in 93 or 94ish, so, he might not have been on the 95 team.
Thanks for the memories and thanks for listening. Great post!

I'm more concerned about UM stopping the AFA option, especially with the departures on the D line who were so good at blowing up option plays this year.
Sure is fun trying to see if we'll match an 11-2 record from the previous year tho, eh? :)
|5 years 10 weeks ago||The schedule is tough next||
The schedule is tough next year, especially in the first 4 games. This makes the lack of D line experience even more concerning. It'll be interesting, to be sure. I can see UM being 2-2 or even 1-3 at the bye week.
The prevailing thought that Michigan may be a better team next year, but, have a worse record seems spot on at this point. Sounds like a good problem to me!

Maybe Denard's regression in running the zone read is because he doesn't have the guy who practically invented the thing coaching him anymore? For Borges, it might be tougher/more annoying to answer those questions, especially since his unit returns all kinds of starters from last year, a former Heisman candidate and has struggled somewhat. Probably comes off as second guessing his expertise.

Well, at the risk of sounding overly negative, this is from the crack research team that couldn't figure out how MSU was guessing the snap count from the gun for the past 3 years and didn't make any adjustments in game to a fairly simple thing. Just sayin'...
That said, I agree with Brian that the offense is as diverse as any we've seen at UM in a long time. Why they would stop short at incorporating a bubble screen (nevermind that it seems mind-numbingly obvious) when they do just about everything else, save the triple option, is a mystery.

It's possible he doesn't hate bubble screens. I'd like to think he's saving it. I'm not sure how "not saying anything about bubble screens" will change opponent preparation, but, whatever. Either way, it's an entirely fair question to ask and a dismissive, rude answer.

|5 years 21 weeks ago||Well, given that MSU has been||
Well, given that MSU has been jumping the snap for the past 3 years (Hoke mentioned it in his pregame pressers...heck, even the Detroit media noticed it), they were jumping the snaps in this year's game (obviously due to Molk's pre-snap mechanics), and I saw no reponse whatsoever to that.
None. Zip. Zilch. Zero.
There did not appear to be any "remedies he took" to deal with the snap count issue. Therein lies the problem.
|5 years 21 weeks ago||Sorry||
The hell with that. That call was awful. That combined with the inability to prepare for or adjust for MSU timing the snap count during the game is even worse. He is guilty of poor planning and poor in game execution in his own right.
I hope he never forgets that play call.
I hope he never forgets his lack of ability to adjust to MSU snap jumping.
I also hope that he tries to be a little less obtuse in the future. He certainly appears so in his press conferences.
|5 years 21 weeks ago||Yikes||
That fourth-and-inches call against Michigan State, what do you see when you watch it again? “It was underexecuted. We don’t design the play for the quarterback to be blindsided. That’s basically it. I’m trying to move on to Purdue. That one I’m trying to forget.”
Actually, Al you shouldn't be trying to forget that one. You need to remember it always, so, the next time you're in that situation you run the ball. Don't EVER forget that call.
|5 years 22 weeks ago||Re: Elephants in rooms||
Gholston = basketball recruiting
He is dirtier than a dirt sandwich.
Any attempt to "rationalize" or defend his actions is a waste of time. If he played for Michigan I would say the same thing and would be calling for his immediate suspension. Of course, if he played for Michigan, he action would've already been taken on that issue.
|5 years 22 weeks ago||You're right about the silent||
You're right about the silent and double silent count strategy. My next question would be, if it was operator execution error on Molk...why wasn't this addressed during the game? The coaching staff is just going to keep letting him make that mistake all game?
I see teams out of the gun all the time (Oregon, for example) get all set, center looks back, QB claps hands/signals and then....nothing. The whole team seems to stop, look at the sideline for direction and then reset and go.
How hard can this possibly be? This whole thing reeks of coaching failure.
P.S. His sub-.500 record is what it is (was). Either you are judged by your record or you are not. A similar argument could be made about Rich Rod here at UM (I'm not making it, by the way). Hoke had a sub-.500 record prior to being hired at UM. That was a negative, in my book.
|5 years 22 weeks ago||Unfortunately, the evidence does not support your claim||
If Borges/Hoke et al saw them jumping snaps, their response to it was piss poor.
Consider this: which is more likely?
1) Borges didn't see/recognize the snap jumping problem.
2) The Borges reaction was tied to so much football knowlege/experience that there is absolutely no way the simple blogger/message boarder could understand.
This snap timing problem is not complex and has several easy, obvious fixes.
This was a horrifyingly poorly coached game. Hoke said so himself immediately afterwards. Of course, he also says: "I think everyone has an idea of snap counts from guns, because there’s a mechanic that every team has." If he is to be taken at his word, then he believes that one of the shotgun drawbacks is tipping the snap and there is (according to his knowlege) no way around this. Yikes.
Unfortunately (again), this makes me question his overall coaching ability and reaffirm my skepticism in his hiring. If he or his staff can't figure out a way to disguise the snap timing out of the shotgun (one would think that Greg Mattison might have some ideas) that only reinforces the possible reasoning for his sub-.500 record at the time of his hiring and makes me even more sick that Jim Harbaugh didn't want/get the job.
This snap count issue is glarinly obvious now and was equally so at game time. Especially that MSU has done this to Michigan for the past 3 years. This coaching staff demonstrated no preparation for this issue pre-kick, no adjustment to it during the game, and could not provide any reason post-game that it would be resolved in any future games.
No panic button here, but, this does not inspire hope or confidence for the future. We are getting beaten by simple, sell out blitzes that "people on a message board" can recognize. What's the coaching staff response? Probably to be more physical...tremendously so. Yeesh.

Think about this: if Denard had been injured on the helmet twist, would Gholston/MSU/Dantonio be under fire?
I mean, can you IMAGINE if Gholston had actually hurt Denard on that play?
He should be disciplined as if he did because that was the intent. Plain and simple. In my mind, Gholston should not be allowed on a football field again. I would feel the same way if he played for UM. That action was disgusting adn there's no call for it. Ever.

|5 years 23 weeks ago||I agree with the sentiment,||
I agree with the sentiment, but, this isn't the NHL. You don't send Darren McCarty out there to fight Lemieux because of a cheap shot from earlier in the game or the game from last year.
You beat a bully (in football) by scoring more points. To the victor, goes the spoils. In the 4th quarter if UM runs a QB sneak, gets the first down in the red zone and punches it in to tie and eventually ties the game, the whole conversation is different.
Then the highlight is not only the UM win, but, the foolish, classless and dangerous behavior of MSU players that trickles down from their head coach who clearly preaches one thing that he is heralded for in the media publicly, but, obviously acts another way with his team.
|5 years 23 weeks ago||I don't know if they were||
I don't know if they were awful, but, the 4th and inches call was not good. First big mistake that I've seen from Borges all year. Too bad, that would've been interesting to have them pick up that 1st down and then tie the game. Additionally, felt like that game was over-coached. I hate this cliche, but, Denard never seemed to get into a "rhythm."
Overall, that game was uber-annoying. Everything from the uniforms, to the play on the field, to the final score. Looked like Delaware vs. S. Florida out there.

Michigan needs to come out with sound strategy (Borges: after 3 games you know what works and what doesn't and what we need 'moar' of) and execution (Offense: no turnovers or penalties) in the 1st quarter or they'll be in trouble. Not to find fault with Borges or anything, but, why would we want to take Denard out of his so called "Power Zone" in terms of the shotgun?
Can someone please explain to me how going under center is better than shotgun and in what way? Don't bother taking into account that everyone including the OC believes this is the best utilization of his skills.
