The Grads still expect…

The Grads still expect Michigan players to be Michigan Men, attending class, doing community service, going on to benefit society in ways other than being pro sports entertainers.

It doesn't say other programs in D1 don't do community service. It says alumni expect student athletes to do community service and benefit society outside of pro sports. We can argue about whether that is true. I am certainly proud of the ways our student athletes contribute to their community beyond football. I wouldn't say I expect that, but I do take it for granted that this is something our student athletes do because I've observed their involvement at places like Mott Children's Hospital for decades since I graduated. I'm certain athletes at other schools do these things too.

OSU might have a few starting players who could get into Michigan, but not many.

So Justin Fields is one of them. We can argue about which OSU starters could have been admitted, but I don't see how we could prove that statement. I can tell you that every one of the Michigan football players and athletes that I personally know have gone on to very impressive careers as doctors, coaches, executives, and leaders. I've done fine for myself, but I'm humbled by some of their achievements and contributions to society. Maybe there are many OSU players who have also done that, but I don't have first hand knowledge. Again, I wouldn't say that I expect our student athletes to do that, but I do take it for granted because of the athletes that I know.

I try to spend my time cheering for my school and the achievements of our student athletes. I don't spend a lot of time making statements about other schools that I can't back up with data. All of my alumni friends do similarly.

There are alumni who say and write arrogant things, but they are a tiny minority of the 630,000+ alumni. I refuse to be judged based on their behavior (especially those who post things on this site).

I’m sorry you ran into an…

I’m sorry you ran into an asshole alumni. We have those, just like every other school. Would you like to hear the story about the little kids and grandma from USC who spit on me and flipped me off as I marched by in the Rose Parade? Or maybe you’d like to hear about what it’s like to march through tOSU campus before the game?

Extrapolating the behavior of one asshole to some large percentage of alumni (or whatever “full of” or “so many” means to you) is offensive and lazy.

Of the hundreds of alumni who are my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances, I’ve never seen one of them behave with that sort of arrogance. They don’t write things like people do on this site.

Furthermore, I can count on one hand the number of them who have even heard of this site. I don’t know of any who post here. The OP was speaking to the people on this site, a tiny minority of fans and alumni.

Kemp’s description of Ronnie Bell is  what an elite team captain looks like.

I’d be willing to bet Ronnie is named a captain in the future.

I’ve been reading “The…

I’ve been reading “The Captain Class.”

Definitely got me thinking about who might be chosen captain this year and if they would fit the characteristics Sam Walker describes in the book. It’s a fascinating read.

I don’t think Shea fits the model.

"Great question" Nice work! "Great question" Nice work!
Understood

Unfortunately I don't have attempt by attempt data for each rusher. Only game by game. So the data has Net Yards, Total Attempts, Yards Per Attempt Average for the game. So I might be able to approximate by summing career net yards at the end of each game, and then getting a running average career yards per attempt at the end of each game. I'll look at the data and think about what I could do. I agree that would be interesting.

Fair enough

I've added a label to the x axis.

I'm not sure I get your second point. A dot plotted above the 30 tick on the x axis indicates a player who has played 30 games in which they have rushed more than 5 times (in each game). It's at least an indicator of experience running but maybe total attempts is better.

Are you suggesting a comparison of total rushes over time and yards per carry? I could give that a try. I appreciate the critique. And suggestions for making something more useful, and not misleading, are welcome.

Agreed and Updated

I filtered out games with less than 5 attempts. I also added the slope and intercept of the regression line. After 30 games with 6 or more carries the regression predicts a runner improving from 4.3 to 4.8 yards per carry.

Each point is yards per carry

Each point is yards per carry in that game only for that individual player.

You got it. For the vast majority of instances where someone had 20+ yards per carry in a game, they only had 1 attempt. I could filter those out but I doubt it would change the results significantly.

Yes

I'll play around with some ways to add that. All the charts have the same shared scale so keeping YPC consistent shouldn't be a problem.

I was there It was the only game I ever attended in Happy Valley. My wife was getting a graduate degree and we made many wonderful friends in her program. I worked at a local business for three years and my colleagues were great people. However, the fans in our section at that game thought it would be funny to throw snowballs at me and my buddy, also a Michigan grad. Not a fond memory.
I have that data

I have the opponent names and other data. Think I'll add a TODO to create a hover popup that shows the actual values, opponent, and year when you point at a bar.

Now if you hover over a bar it will display the details below. So you can see the season, the opponent, and all the actual data values behind the chart, including some values I didn't include in the chart itself.

Don't have the fumble data

I would have to find a way to get the fumble data first. If you take a look at Mike Hart's stats page you can see what I have.

First Diary Post Up

First Post is Up: Top 200 Rushers Data Visualization

I've added you to the repo so you can see the code. Can't wait to play with all the data I scraped. Took quite a while to get it all in the form that I wanted it. I might try doing something with the Passing stats next.

Workin' on it

Grozzy, I've got my code version controlled in git and spent some time dockerizing the node app this week so hopefully I can easily deploy it to a host in the future. Plus it was an excuse to learn more about how docker works.

Perhaps we should connect on github. My github id is twebb. Let me know what your github id is and if I get the repo up there I'll give you access.

Next step is to turn the d3js rushing visualization code into a working page in the node app (currently it's just a scraper) and connect it up to the firebase data.

Nice work!

I've been working on some similar stuff using d3js and node. I got a nice scraper working to pull all the player data into firebase. Hopefully I'll have something interesting to show soon.

A Good Question

A good question is one that coach answers with "Yeah, there’s a good question" and then proceeds to give an interesting answer. This is your goal reporter people. Make it happen.

How Do We Allow These People into Positions of Power

As I read it I kept thinking about what fundamentally went so wrong to allow someone with such narcissism into a position of power with nearly no recourse to get them out. In many organizations I have observed narcissists who get ahead and wreak havoc on the people around them. There must be some way to stop it from happening.

A few days after I finished reading it I ran across this HBR article: Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?

"Ode to the war daddies" at "Ode to the war daddies" at the end of "The Essential Smart Football" was the perfect background to the questions about one-gapping vs two-gapping. Just finished reading it today. I definitely feel a teeny bit more knowledgeable now. Think I'll pick up Chris Brown's other book too.
Push-ups on the diag would be Push-ups on the diag would be great. But my favorite diag entertainment has always been Paul Kyprie (aka Zeemo), the juggler who taught me how to juggle when I was a teen. I want to see the players doing one handed push-ups and catching juggling clubs that Paul wings at 'em with the other hand. Wait correction, swords that Paul wings at them. Or chainsaws. That would be a show!
"it's more than that, it's "it's more than that, it's the networking ... it's about life after football and Michigan gets that"

The guys I know who played M football impress the hell out of me today.

Smart kid.
