It's either generic ads or no ads for me. The problem with MGoAds is that there's all too often those supposedly funny t-shirt ads featuring really slutty women, and I'd rather not have that appearing on my computer screen (again, nothing personal). I'd be much more likely to tolerate ads if I knew stuff like that wouldn't show up. But I suppose, that's what the analytics engines know that young males like, so blocking that would reduce revenue. I like the beveled guilt solution; thanks for the suggestion.
11 weeks 5 days ago	To all those giving Seth	To all those giving Seth constructive criticism, I'm sort of with you. I in generally enjoy reading him. He gets into trouble, IMO, when he tries to pack too much stuff into too little space. Whenever he takes heat in the comments, it generally reveals a sensitivity to being concise. So I guess maybe the idea is to tone down the density of some of the posts; I'd rather read a feature that's a little longer but more natural to read. Of course, I'm a pretty awful blogger (seriously; I'll never give out my blog's address on this site), so what the heck do I know?

Oh well I have very much enjoyed TWIT (and it's got a very fitting abbreviation) thus far. HOWEVA, I'm not sure it's a sustainable feature. I mean, you can only poke fun at people saying bombastic things before it just becomes noise. As someone else mentioned, the Desmond Howard thing was gold, Jerry, gold, while while people telling [individual x] to suffer some great calamity after [signing with their rival; losing an important basketball game] will become repetitive after a while. So if you're going to keep going with TWIT as-is, I'd suggest branching out and focusing more on, say, really creative sayings (as if any of those exist on Twitter) and less on people just being general asswipes. Frankly, I think doing a choose-your-own-adventure column (or perhaps alternating between that and TWIT) would be the ideal solution; don't restrict yourself unnecessarily (see my comments about the staleness of just "standard features" in the other META thread). Either way, you're an entertaining enough writer that I'll read anything by the guy formerly known as Blue in South Bend. EDIT: I think the idea behind my post is to give your take on the week's news, whatever that might be. Of course, then you run the risk of straying too far into UV territory, so what do I know? Do whatever the heck you want, I'm sure it'll be great.

Then I had a crisis of conscience and realized that if I didn't want people negging soccer threads because they think soccer is stupid, then I shouldn't neg something just because I don't like it. And then I wrote a post on it, because I have nothing else to contribute to this thread.
11 weeks 5 days ago	there are not enough	there are not enough free-form, personal, or unscripted columns (i.e. get out of the mold of UV, recruiting, hokepoints, dear diary, and game columns). What I look forward to most are the 3 or 4 paragraphs of Brian's writings in the game columns that are heartfelt. I think this is the key. Don't get too corporate and inflexible, and you'll have my readership.

That being said, repeated jokes don't really bother me, with a few exceptions (Kozan's vision quest; constant Kate Upton fawning). Edit: For the love of all things holy, people, please stop negging the OP. You might not agree with the point, but the fact is that this is a good topic of discussion, as evidenced by the fact that there's been like 80 responses in an hour. Unless you want to prove the smartasses right who claim that we're all MGoLemmings, don't neg just because you're offended. Also, please neg me for mentioning voting.

Cute nicknames just get annoying after a while. I enjoy obscure references, nerdy senses of humor, and the rest. Howeva, I think MGoBlog has been drifting in the "TMQ" direction (as Brian dubbed it) for the past couple months. I'd say that referential analogies are a bit too common to be read without difficulty; your average person will have to either google it, or have a good chunk of the jokes go right over their heads. MGoBlog is becoming a little too difficult to read if you're not already familiar with MGoBlog, and even then it's tough. Another thing I miss is "Brian's songs", as the MGoHoF puts it. I feel like the blog has become a little too pigeonholed; if it's not part of a regular feature (UV, Friday Recruitin, Mondays Posgame Column, Hokepoints [don't like the name change, but YMMV]), it generally doesn't make an appearance on the blog. Why can't people just write features on what they feel like from time to time? The out-of-the-ordinary posts are often the ones I'm most interested in. That being said, all this is nitpicking on what is, in general, an excellent blog.

But as far as bears go, if you're close enough range to need to shoot them, you're close enough range to use pepper spray effectively. You won't read a single piece of bear literature in any place that denies the fact that pepper spray is more effective in preventing injury to yourself. Peace of mind is quite another thing, of course.

Seriously. studies have shown that bear spray (which I won't carry, because eastern black bears are very timid) is way more effective in stopping a bear than a firearm is. But like I said, most people don't even see a bear on the trail, much less have a confrontation with one. If there were grizzlies in the area, I'd bring bear spray. But the odds are so microscopic of having a confrontation with a black bear that it's not worth it.

I don't think he gets enough credit, because the shoes that he's trying to fill are... well... unfillable. I really like Pat Hughes (sp?) from the Cubs. In fact, I'm more impressed with him than I am Bob Uecker, who was great in Major League (Go Tribe!), but not really that notable otherwise IMO. Ron Santo was a broadcasting trainwreck, but the synergy between Pat and Ron (read: Pat mocking Ron and Ron being oblivious to it) was tremendous.

Well, I have a very wonderful mother who is very sad to see me move out of state and would love nothing more than to shower me with love, affection, and packages. So I'm kind of playing it by ear; I'll call her a couple weeks in advance and tell her if I want a maildrop somewhere, or if I'm just planning to buy food in town. I've heard from a thru-hiker friend that it's a really BAD IDEA to plan out now what you're going to eat in New York; you'll probably hate the thing you bought 100 of by time you get there. Either skip maildrops for the most part, or have people assemble them for you while you're on the trail.
