We have no pass threat, at…

We have no pass threat, at least no deep pass threat...no playmakers there. And pass blocking not so good.  So short passes, playaction, tight ends, etc and Run The Damn Ball. Haarberg, kid outta nowhere, Cinderella story....better than Sims. He has wheels and size and doesn't turn the ball over, which lost the MN and Co games or we'd be 4-0.

D pretty salty. Swarm to the ball. Get worn out when the O can't do their part.

Special team much better....damning with feint praise.

Let's have a clean game both sides, no injuries either side.

GBR!

We have no pass threat, at…

And who knows who will play who regularly in the "new" bigly B1G? So I say enjoy whatever  games this year with a few regular or semi regular faces, and beyond a few close rivalry games, Ii will be random, and IMHO, less engaging.

Typical Big 12 score

Typical Big 12 score

Agree.

Mostly I thought…

Agree.

Mostly I thought many posters here were just underrating this year's NU D. We'll soon find out if we can handle your team's O. Certainly Michigan's D is the best our O has faced - a UM tradition.

I think both fan bases are expecting a real good game.

Good reply, we've certainly…

Good reply, we've certainly shot ourselves in the foot.....hell even against bad teams! I'd agree UM is rightly favored to get the W. But 5 points is a pretty tight spread for a top 10 ranked team against an unranked though.

Just trying to give you guys an opposing fan's perspective on NU's strengths and weaknesses.

As for series history and reasons for the results,  remember you may have lost Denard, but we lost Rex Burkhead - our all B1G first teamer. Pretty good player....still in the pros. And your wins were against bad NU teams just like ours were against bad UM teams.

Bottom line, expecting a good tussle.

First of all, hat's off…

First of all, hat's off beating Wisconsin at Camp Randall. Never an easy W. Michigan's a 5 point favorite on the road and deserves to be, but.....

I think most posters on this thread are underestimating this year's Blackshirts. It's a good unit. Not as good as Wisconsin's, but 13th in the FBS in points allowed. And paired with a much, much better offense than Wisconsin. So I'd say we pose a stronger challenge.

We held Oklahoma, who has a fine offense, to its lowest point total since 2016....on the road. MSU has the 18th ranked scoring offense. We held them to zero 1st downs the entire second half....on the road.  Nebraska's D isn't a flashy group that gets lots of sacks or TO's, but experienced and play very well as a unit.

Our problems have been inconsistent O-Line play and terrible special teams. Under Frost, the Huskers have lost 15 games by one score, which IMHO is linked to those two factors. It's really an incredible stat.

The reason Martinez seems erratic is that he's often running for his life on pass plays, and hadn't had a reliable rushing attack as a foundation of the passing game. That all points back to the O-Line which is talented but young. But they're getting better with experience and with some personnel tweaks. Which opens up both the passing and rushing game, and puts way less pressure on Martinez to do it all himself.

And the special teams have less pressure when instead of constantly punting, the offense is humming. But it's been the consistent soft spot x factor.

The Illinois game was the proverbial 1st game crapshoot where anything can happen. And scheduling a conference game in the opener. We should've scheduled a Western Michigan type opener.

We're 2-2 against Michigan since joining the B1G, despite 3/4 games being in AA. I expect a hotly contested game.

Anyway, my two cents worth and looking forward to an entertaining game with no serious injuries for either team. GBR!

Definitely an old Big8 thing…

Definitely an old Big 8 thing shared by many of the schools and even pre-dates the Big 8. Nebraska's fight song, from1924, even has a verse, "Dear old Nebraska U".

First, hats off to coach…

First, hats off to coach Bakich and UM for an awesome season. Getting to the CWS finals as a B1G team was against all odds.

There are two major hurdles that the B1G places on their teams that no other conferences do.

1. Inability to oversign. The huge issue here is in a sport where not only can RS Sophomores and Juniors leave your program to the MLB draft like Seniors, so can your high school kids. The B1G just recently changed the rules where teams can oversign by up to 1 scholarship spread over 2 players, but when every other conference can oversign by 6-8 players every year to protect them against the draft, we are still at a massive disadvantage. To simplify it, the B1G doesn't allow as much oversigning as every other conference.

2. Inability to replace players until they physically sign a contract.  So a B1G coach can’t until the player actually signs his MLB contract.

Given these huge disadvantages in baseball that the B1G imposes on everyone, what advantages did Michigan give Coach Bakich that seem like game changers since they were in the CWS championship?

Michigan is able to sign more players by giving financial aid to their partial scholarship baseball players. In some instances, don't even have kids sign letters of intent because it's a full ride academically, thus preserving some of their 11.7 scholarships they are able to give for baseball.

Or as Chris Webb tweeted:

Michigan has a great multitude of scholarships and grants for their students. More than other Big Ten universities they’ve been able to have their baseball players take advantage of it. They’re not doing anything wrong. Just how Michigan is structured to support students.

Credit the University of Michigan for allowing Bakich and staff to go to areas throughout the country and get kids everywhere. School has found ways to afford players supplemental aid. That matters in building depth and getting kids in places like Michigan.

And, then, when you have a staff that goes all over the country to find and evaluate talent, like they do, you're going to get guys. A tip of the cap to them, too, for their efforts and relentlessness on the trail.”

TMobile has a fantastic plan…

TMobile has a fantastic plan offering 2  unlimited lines for $70/month and that includes all the taxes and regulatory charges. One person on the plan has to be 55 or older, but not both. They even do a promo, 3 lines for $95.

As long as you're in a good TMobile market and 1 person's 55, hard to beat that deal. I'm in far northern Chicago suburbs and works fine, and had pretty good luck out in the country.

I apologize for generating…

I apologize for generating what anyone would consider a political post here....being a rival fan poster I really try to mind my manners.

I saw this as more of a UM grad groundbreaker case, as the two candidates were pretty close politically.

Credit your fellow MGoBoarders, it was a pretty civil conversation for the most part. One reason I chime in here from time to time in my own Cornhusker way.

Meanwhile, NU's AD has made a few pretty good hires lately in Frost and Hoiberg. GBR!

No idea if he plays - but if…

No idea if he plays - but if he does it should make the game a lot more entertaining than watching a 3rd string walk-on. He practiced today but didnt run much I've heard.

Frost is making wholesale…

Frost is making wholesale changes to the team - he's been given a long leash and he's going for a complete overhaul/rebuild.

At last count, added 51 new players to the roster. 140 currently on the roster, largest in the B1G I believe, 35% who are new since December, including lots of walkons:

38 freshmen and 3 redshirt freshmen, 3 sophomores, 6 juniors, and a senior. And I expect some more transfers.

Not to mention 2 QBs transferring. And a flashy new QB who hadn't played in 2 years. And a completely new offense, 100% coaching staff turnover, and a new AD.

The Huskers have 16 scholarship seniors and 21 total seniors and plan to sign another full recruiting 2019 class and more walk-ons. By next year Frost likely will have added 90 new players.

I can't recall, but did Hoke or Harbaugh put the Wolverines through that level of transformation?

It would certainly be a longshot to upset Michigan this week, but I think anybody who bets the spread on any game either way on the Huskers this year is making a bad bet - everything's too unpredictable and in flux.

We feel your pain....wouldn…

We feel your pain....wouldn't give up on Coach Harbaugh just yet...I think this stat just shows what a job he has to do and that it won't happen fast. Frost has said the same to our fans.

Glad we're playing your…

Glad we're playing your squad again 4 years in a row as well as this year. Actually, I've read we're scheduled thru 2027: https://twitter.com/ScottDochterman/status/1034883181458153472?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1034885668558778368&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fs9e.github.io%2Fiframe%2Ftwitter.min.html%231034885668558778368

Michigan's the only B1G team for Nebraska where the fan bases share some past history/drama predating joining the B1G - pretty sure many Michigan fans feel that more than with other B1G newcomers (excluding MSU but including PSU).

We're 4-4-1 all-time, the split title, return of Scott Frost, and 2-1 vs Michigan in conference so a little material there to keep the flames burning.

You guys have the upper hand this year so let the competition continue and GBR.

Martinez is Frost's hand…

Martinez is Frost's hand picked guy, so no surprise. Does it matter if the back up is on scholarship,  or a walk-on when "the guy" is injured? I think the jury is out there  -  you're offense usually takes a hit either way. Or the 2nd stringer, regardless of pedigree, pleasantly surprises.

For all the hype about the Frost offense and shiny new QB, the return of the Blackshirts is just as important for getting back to the "real" Nebraska. He and the AD are on the same page which hasn't happened for far too long - Michigan fans can appreciate how discord there can affect things...the conditioning and strength program, the Diaco hiring, and rugby tacking are three examples of AD meddling.

Best of luck this season, Wolverine fans, except when playing the Huskers, GBR!

No true freshman has ever…

No true freshman has ever started a season opener before for Nebraska, although Tommie Frazier (1992) did by mid-season.

The end game is finding a guy who can run Frost's  spread like Milton did at Central Florida and Mariota did at Oregon, read a defense on the fly and take advantage of the defensive weaknesses this scheme uncovers.

Martinez is Frost's and the staffs hand-picked recruit. A guy they think fits perfectly in this system. With a rebuilding year that you want to use to lay the foundation for the future. and Huskers have one of the B1G's best receiver corps.

13 newcomers between offense and defense listed on the initial depth chart.

4 NE starters, and 4 NE kids who are very young, on 2nd team. Largest roster in the B1G and the walk-on program, which was always Nebraska's secret sauce, is back in full swing. 3 walk-ons awarded scholies this week. AD is considering adding another women's sport to offset any Title IX issues.

Nebraska going back to what works for Nebraska, but also some tweaks and changes to tradition. Frost is the guy who can get away with that and the fans are the most united since the firing of Frank Solich.

Michigan is predicted by everyone to have an outstanding season, Nebraska will be up and down and likely take some lumps and surprise sometimes in an unpredictable 2018 season. Best of luck except against the Huskers, GBR!

Don't bet on facing Martinez…

Don't bet on facing Martinez, no true freshman has ever started a season opener for Nebraska, although Tommie Frazier (1992) did by mid-season.

Tristan Gebbia was one of Nebraska’s highest-rated quarterback recruits in the modern recruiting era as one of the most decorated passers in California High School history. “In our offense, you don’t need to be 4.4 (seconds in the 40-yard dash), you just need to be an effective runner,” Frost said.

Frost values a strong grasp of the offense over any one physical trait. While he’s not in the same league athletically as Martinez, he can work the zone read concepts in Frost's offense, is more than a capable as a runner, and has the best arm talent on the roster.

That being said, yes, whether a true or redshirt freshman, whoever starts against your squad will face a B1G challenge.

Some of the other comments on this thread about Nebraska's long-term future, people have said in one form or another for 60 years. Yet whenever we've had a good coach and athletic dept admin, we've managed to do just fine.

Have a great season Wolverine fans, I'll enjoy watching us compete against you again.

'Bama love

by the media is ridiculous and over the top....National Champs w/o winning division....

Bulletin board material for sure

that he already walked back and wished he hadn't said.

For context though, he made the crack at a dinner atheletic event in Omaha, among Husker fans, so it wasn't as cocky a remark as it might appear. But I can see where it would bring sneers from Michigan and Buckeye fans, especially given the Cornhuskers on field results last year.

Going from 0-12 to 13-0 in 2 seasons

let alone capping it off beating Auburn makes them champions no matter how you slice it.

Think of the determination and perservance those players on the winless team had to dig themselves out of that hole.

It's one of the most impressive turnarounds and team efforts in recent CFB.

Among the many reasons we are CFB fans.

Good points, but

Frost has said he's got a plan to restore walkon program - given it cant be quite what it was in the Osborne era, he certainly knows how to if anybody does.

You're so right that it's not as easy for any of the bluebloods - both Michigan and Nebraska more or less only had one serious conference threat in the old days.

I still think the number one key to CFB success is excellent coaching and unity between the coaching and AD dept. Michigan certainly experienced that recently, and took the steps necessary to correct things. Husker fans think we have that now but time will tell.

I appreciated the number of comments and posts on the MGoBoard about our spring game and program. The two fan bases and programs have had their dramatic moments, actually somewhat out of proportion to the number of games we've played. But I sense most Michigan fans prefer having the "old Nebraska" in the B1G.

Nebraska's outrecruited the West every year

It's the coaching and AD that have been the problem.

We ended up 22 on 247 ranking despite changing staffs, and really that's been pretty typical even during our dominant years. Huskers have never been a recruiting powerhouse for obvious reasons.

Technically you're right

and the two schedules are both plenty tough, so  given it's a tossup as far as being challenging, I was using that as a tiebreaker. I'm happy to see us playing each other again.

@ Iowa

as well

247 ranks CFB's toughest as

1. Michigan

2. Nebraska

3. Rutgers

7. Indiana

8. Northwestern

10. Maryland

Six of 10 all in the B1G? How can that be?

Between playing Michigan, Wisconsin, OSU and Iowa on the road, getting MSU as our other crossover, coming back from a bad season and having a new coach, we have our work cut out for us. I'd give us the edge, if you want to call it that, on having the toughest schedule given Michigan is coming off a successful season and has their coach formly in place.

Nice crowd for a spring game.

Nebraska will be back as a CFB power, we've ony lacked a great coach and AD.

Best of luck on your 2018 season, Michigan (except when we play you).

GBR!

Frost joins Fitzgerald, Harbaugh and Chryst

as B1G  coaches leading their alma maters.

His B1G debut - against the Wolverines traveling to Michigan on Sept. 22. That game should bring back some "memories", its why we all love CFB

More bowls are fine

I don't buy the "meaningless exhibition game" or  "no losing record teams" arguments. It's another CFB game, just as much fun and reason to watch as early season non-conference mismatches featuring Power 5 teams against directional schools, or any game during the season with mediocre or losing record teams. People don't seem to have a problem with those.

Full disclosure - Nebraska fan here, but always felt this way about bowl games. And we beat the hell out of UCLA. Good luck against the Gators, and GBR!

Nebraska fans are happy in the B1G

There's no fan interest in going back, no buyer's remorse whatsoever.

Recent poll last month on this topic, from HuskerMax, the most popular and influentual Husker fan site ran 83% in favor of the B1G:

The drama and increasingly Texas-centric leaning of the conference really wore old.

Only griping I ever hear is the longer drive to games, which is significant, and the new divisional set up. We'd rather play better, more interesting schools like Michigan every year than Purdue and Illinois.

I'd say fans are even split on playing our old rival Oklahoma. They made their bed with Texas when the XII was formed, opting to play the Horns every year and drop their annual game with us.

The academic value of being in the B1G isn't lost on most NU fans, either, and I'm sure the University officials are unanimous supporting the move.

See my post #92

Short answer, most of us are happy right here. I know I am!

Vast majority of Nebraska fans

are happy with the B1G move. Only griping I ever hear is the increased distance to drive to games, which is significant, and the new divisional set up. Believe it or not, we'd rather play better, more interesting schools like Michigan every year than play Purdue and Illinois. And the academic value of being in the B1G isn't lost on most NU fans, either.

Have to disagree about recruiting. We still do fine in TX, we currently have a QB and RB in 2016 class from TX and OK, and 2 players in the 2015 class. Heck, our current QB is from TX. And we've always recruited nationally, the mix of players from the top talent states just varies from year to year. Pelini wasn't a particularly strong recuiter, but Mike Riley seems to be. He's very stong in CA, which has been a traditional source for us as well.

Personally, I miss playing UM every year, and enjoy the fans. Happy to hear most of you are pleased we're part of the B1G. GBR!

I appreciate such a detailed and informative reply

bronxblue, thanks for taking the time.

I always feel welcomed on this site as a rival fan. I actually post as much here as my Husker sites, because I like the people, the wit, and variety of topics and viewpoints. Always something interesting going on here, I just try to add a little something once in a while while minding my manners as a guest.

I think the upshot of what you're saying is, technically it's probably illegal, but so trivial no one would ever bother pressing the issue. And impossible to detect an individual unless they get into distribution. Passing on content beyond your own private use seems to be the tipping point between harmless and harmful.

BTW, good recent case and article from Ars Technica on a related topic, where IMAX threatened legal action for copyright infringement, then backed down, that you might enjoy. Thanks again for the great comments.

What puzzles me if Youtube ripping is illegal & hurts the artist

is that they or their label or representative willingly post the music video on a popular site in a format that can easily be ripped. There has to be an easy way for the artist or YT, who they work with, to prevent this.

The fact that they don't implies to me it's either legal, or they don't care, or both. The only legal action I've ever heard of is conversion sites that archive rips, whicj=h to me is more akin to traditional pirating.

So, never heard any noise about legal action against individuals ripping, and it seems an easy thing to stop with technical barriers.

Am I missing something?

So bronxblue, are you also saying

it's even illegal to download the nonconverted video to your device? It's only legal to view it from the YT site?

And when you say, "the original rights' holder(s) likely only granted Youtube the right to replay the content, not distribute it as if they had the fully bundle of rights", are you saying that from experience? Why would that be likely, because that seems pretty key here?

I know there've been cases where legal action was taken against ripping sites that store previous rips, and I can see where that would be distribution, but never heard of an individual being made an example of with legal action, like you hear about with movies.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, just curious, and your post seems to address the issue with fact based on experience and training, rather than just opinion. Really, I thought most of the posts on this thread topic have been interesting and well thought out.

I'm surprised to hear that,

being an IP attorney you obviously know more than me.

I honestly thought 1 copy for personal use was legal, that pirating only applied if you distributed to others. And all IP law isn't the same, is it? Thought there were some things very specific to music.

I'd appreciate more of an explanation, not because I'm challenging your opinion, but to be better informed.

Like healthcare,

it's the one thing that when most people "buy", price is essentially no object, so the normal market forces are out the window.

If you're sick enough, you'll go bankrupt to pay. Higher ed isn't that extreme, but pretty close to it. Like you say, people still will pay almost anything they have to, to get their ticket to the American dream punched.

No, but usually rival fans

No, but usually rival fans ask me if that's Taylor Martinez throwing a pass...

What's wrong with lots of bowl games? Nothing

I wouldn't care if all the teams played postseason, its a CFB game. Like the early season non conference schedule, it's fun to watch your team play against a school or conference you normally wouldn't be matched up against. I watch the games I find entertaining, skip the others, whether early or postseason.

I don't buy that they're "meaningless" exhibitions. Most early season games are gimmies. Sure, your team can get upset, but big upsets are rare. At least the bowl games tend to have some interesting matchups.

And how is a major bowl any more "meaningful" than the toilet bowl? Either way, your team's not playing for a NC.

Do I get more revved up when my Huskers are playing for a conference title or major bowl game? Sure, but I wanted them to beat Southern Cal last in last year's bowlgame.

Nebraska will never settle for less than

competing regularly for Conference and National titles. Why should we? 9 win seasons are OK, and expected. Our history says so. It's basically the bare minimum.

I'm glad that our AD has had the balls TWICE recently to reject anything less. UM won't, and shouldn't either, right? That's how you sustain being winingest all time, etc.....not accepting only "good" seasons.

Coach Pelini ranks #8 among active coaches for wins

but AD Eichorst says what mattered was performance against best teams, and he had enough time to get the job done

I don't think Craig Bohl would be considered

he was run out of town as DC under coach Solich's regime.

The difference:

No championships....that's what did him in.

And despite what a few posters here say, regularly winning championships is a very realistic expectation at Nebraska. Coach Pelini had 7 years, that's pretty fair I think. He came close a few times but the ball didn't bounce his way.

Very interesting that some here would like him considered at UM. Personally, I think he's better suited for the pro game at some level.

As a Nebraska fan

I'm grateful to coach Pelini for pulling us up from the coach Callahan debacle. He took us to 3 conference  championship games and only a few other coaches won at least 9 games every year like he did in his seven years. He ran a clean program, high grad rate, minimal off-field issues, his players liked him and never quit on him (see this week's Iowa game).

Bottem line, despite all that, no championships over a certain amount of time doesn't cut it at Nebraska, or at Michigan, and never will. It's not easy, though, finding a coach who can meet our expectations and standard, as we've both seen. This will be our 4th attempt and your 3rd.

Good luck on your search and next season, Go Big Red!

Why do you say they're the

Why do you say they're the best?

never did figure out how this whole all  SEC is the best started...not denying it, just never heard all the details?

Most NC game teams....yes.....best across the board????

To be fair and put into perspective,

Bo didn't bring this topic up or start complaining about itafter the game. His comments were in response to a question raised specifically about the hand clapping, apparently one of the press noticed the MSU defense clapping and asked Bo about it.

That being said, nobody on the Nebraska side thinks the game was won or lost on this. Sparty was the better team that night.

As a rival fan

I've always considered myself a guest here and try to mind my manners. Really, the main reason I visit and comment is that I respect the Michigan program and find the level of discourse on this board much more worthwhile than most "fan" boards.

I try to give a little non-UM perspective that is hopefully interesting and different, somehow I've managed to accumulated 1000 points, so I guess I've done OK. I've always (well, most always) been treated with courtesy by Michigan fans here.

Sorry to see we don't play you regularly anymore, maybe that will change with next B1G reshuffle.

Good luck with your season, and keep some perspective on wins, losses, coaches, etc.......it's early in the season and CFB teams can change a lot as the season goes on.

Go Big Red!

Good sportsmanship displayed by you guys

I expected no less.

We haven't even gone to full pads yet.......2 guys in 48 hours plus a suspension.....Shhhheeeeesh.

Though some NU fans don't like him,

all his players  really  love and respect Bo, as far as everything I've ever read or heard.

Now if we could just break that 9-10 win season streak.....Go Big Red!

Kinda funny how Pelini is becoming an object of minor mgoblog fascination. Guess it shows a certain level of acceptance of Nebraska being in the B1G.

Good to see

we've reached a point in the B1G  where we're teased and mocked by Michigan fans. Well, it was a quality mock so that's something.

And the most "memorably" named bowls

who can ever forget the Poulan Weed-Eater Bowl, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl, GoDaddy.com Bowl, or Little Caesars Pizza Bowl?

I always liked the Fight Hunger Bowl though.
